I am not using Windows 7 (at least not yet), but I am using Windows 2008 R2, which has the Windows 7 shell. I've been using it a couple of days and I like it a lot, I find the new win7 ui-shell very usefull, very productive. There are things I like a lot in it that makes my life easier. Specially 1. Improvements to Windows Explorer, Favorites and Libraries 2. Jump Lists 3. The new taskbar 4. How the Show desktop button is non intrusive, but readily accesible 5. the new tray area with app icons hidden....

There is a new version of Office Communicator Mobile available. But one feature that I really want is still missing, i.e. for COMO (Communicator Mobile) to run of the storage card. Microsoft Guys please can you add this? The main memory on the phones are not huge you know, typically about 100 MB or less, which gets consumed by every other app for some reason or other wanting to dump some files into the /Windows. I tried this over and over, and checkign the username, password, secuirty permissions etc. with no luck. The logs provided no help either. How do you get around it, you need to enter...

Had issues debugging a web application on Vista, it kept complaining that Integrated Authentication was necessary. So goggled around and came across this post on Rick's Strahl's blog, and decided to install VS2005 SP1. The VS2005 SP1 setup experience in my case was horrible. it ended up being a memory hog brought the machine down to near halt, and that was just the setup initialization. I would advise folks to run the setup overnight if all they got is 1GB of Ram on their Vista boxes/notebook. So...

WMP may not equal Windows Media Player in future. Microsoft have apparenlty announced a compressed image format known and Windows Media Photo (WMP) which provides a 20:1 compression (JPEG provies a 6:1) Where I see this being of much use is in camera phones or other devices where taking pictures isnt its main purpose. Will it affect digital cameras? I dont think it would (atleast not in the serious level). There is a reason why Raw is chosen as opposed to JPEG...

Ok so I downloaded, installed, and tried Windows Media Player 11. There is a lot I like about it, the new minimalisting UI is very neat. I really dig it. I love how stuff are organized in the library. They’ve even fixed a few of my earlier gripes (but only a few) The player in its smallest size is still tooo big to tuck anywhere on your screen while you are working (i.e. as default without hunting down for a tini mini skin) Customizable keyboard shortcuts are still missing. Ok, this might not be news but, thought I’d shout it out anyways. Ipod Software v1.1 has a bug for the Ipod Nano and the Ipod video. I came across this cool explorer shell extention a few weeks back. Its called Xentient Thumbnails, its free and what it does is pretty interesting. For your image files, when you are viewing them in explorer as icons (either large icons or small icons), it replaces typical icon image with a redition of the actual image in the file. So I was at the Mini Tech.Ed Sri Lanka 2005 today. There was an interesting interesting set of topics, but I think I made the wrong choice of following the Developer Track. Recently I’ve been working with a framework built on top of .NET & Windows Forms, and whenever it crashes (which seems to happen quite frequently in my case) the DW20 process spawns up and pegs the CPU at 100% and writes huge dump files. What I am still at a loss to find out is why it spawns up when this framework I am working with crashes...

Faced a dilemna with a SharePoint box recently. This SharePoint box had been running for over 4 months, and had over 500 users using it daily. Something I came across today. I have a bunch of stsadm backups of WSS sites. Some things I got burnt by recently. Hope you guys are aware of these. 1) If you right click on a WebPart Page on a document library and say Save Target As (i.e. from IE’s context menu) what you are going to get is the HTML normally sent to the browser and not the WebPart composition. It makes perfect sense actually since the browser is requesting for a ‘Smart Page’ from SharePoint and there for SharePoint sends it HTML. Now having said that even though it makes perfect sense it is not too obvious....

OK I admit it,I am a big fan of the 'run command' (Win Key + R). In fact I probably use it much more than the Start Menu. I mean for all those programs that are so deep into start-menu, the 'run command' becomes so very convenient for day-to-day work. for instance - IIS Manager is : Win Key + R -> InetMgr in contrast to Start -> [All Program] -> Administrative Tools -> IIS Manger - Visual Studio is : Win Key + R -> devenv in contrast to Start -> All Programs -> MS Visual Studio.Net...

Deploying WebParts after you make a build is a bit of a hassle especially because you have to leave you IDE to do a couple of things. The basic process is you need to 1. Compile 2. Install the assembly to the GAC 3. Copy assembly to c:\inetpub\wwwroot\bin 4. Recycle the MS SharePoint default app pool - to invoke the new instance of the assembly -> Typically you will have to switch between VS.NET, InetMgr, and the command prompt. So here’s what I do. 1.
