A good friend and ex-colleague of mine seems to have been bitten by an evil bug causing him to devote his free time to creating a tool that will report all hidden shares on a remote machine. The tool is available for download here. Your colleagues in your lan thought they could hide their party photos and mp3s from you, but not any more. Link: http://projectdistributor.n... Lord of the Rings Online, a MMORPG from Turbine apparently uses .NET. The system requirements explicitly say so. I am not sure what parts of the game are .NET and which are native code, but I assume that the launcher is written in .NET and I did spy some resource assemblies being downloaded in the update process. The version of .NET required is 1.1 with Service Pack 1. Which means on a Vista box framework 1.1 gets installed in the LOTRO setup. Hmm need to explore more. Anyway's here is 2 incriminating...

Former GWBer and now MSFTy Brandon Paddock has released an app for Windows Vista that gives you the shortcut ability of Windows Desktop Search (formerly MSN Desktop Search) on the Vista Search box which is nested in the start menu. Go check it out. Brandon you are 'The Man'. First all those uber tips for WDS and now Start++. As a matter of fact, I find myself using WDS more for the shortcut ability rather than for the search functionality. Link: http://brandonlive.com/cate... Technorati...

The link to this Video was on Digg today (I think I am fast becoming a Digg junky these days, curse you Kevin Rose!! - JK) Anyways here is the video. Its Nvidias application to the Mobile phone industry. I foresee that this would be where GPU's would go in the future. However a given fact is that the number 1 power drain on PCs today is the Graphics card, and this wouldn't change on the mobile arena. In fact it does get more demanding, so having a fancy GPU on your mobile phone, would or may result...

Hey check this out. IStartedSomething.com has an interview with Hammad Darwish, the photographer behind the Vista wallpapers. And you can check out his Flickr feed he has got some really nice images there. Tags: Photograrphy, Vista, Wallpaper Cross-posted from tariqayad.com...

AnandTech has a good review of Vista. Cant say I find the result surprising. The only point worthwhile remember is regarding RAM. In their own words "We recommend a bare minimum of 1GB of memory for all Vista users, 2GB if you're a power user but don't have a lot running at the same time, and 4GB if you hate the sound of swapping to disk.". And as they state unlike XP, if you throw more RAM at Vista, you will see benefits, but under the same amount RAM as XP, performance won't be as fast. Tags: Vista,...

Craig Tanner (whom I have tremendous respect for) did a podcast on process of creating the RadiantVista Podcasts. In the podcasts Craig mentions that he/they use an open source tool called Audacity for their audio editing. I tried Audacity today and it's pretty good. I am not an audio guru so have no in depth knowledge of what to expect of an audio editor, but as far as I am concerned, audacity lets me do all the basics, select, play, cut, copy, paste, loop. A friend gave me this link, which shows off the Vista Yahoo Messenger. Doesn't that UI look sweet? Cross-posted from tariqayad.com

I found this cool application called Visual Task Tips today. It shows you a preview of the running app when you hover your mouse over the its task bar entry like on Vista Link: http://www.visualtasktips.com/

Via digg There's an article on Arstechnica that says that a study has been done that shows the Aero interface in Vista does not affect performance. I am not digging that too much coz on my Vista Capable notebook (Dell Inspiron 6400 w/ the Intel 945GM Express graphics card & 1GB of RAM) I found that explorer.exe was taking up 35 - 40% of my CPU. Performance was much better after I disabled glass. Glass was enabled by default when I installed Vista, but now I keep it off. So the bottom line is...

Had issues debugging a web application on Vista, it kept complaining that Integrated Authentication was necessary. So goggled around and came across this post on Rick's Strahl's blog, and decided to install VS2005 SP1. The VS2005 SP1 setup experience in my case was horrible. it ended up being a memory hog brought the machine down to near halt, and that was just the setup initialization. I would advise folks to run the setup overnight if all they got is 1GB of Ram on their Vista boxes/notebook. So...

Yeah, had a struggle late night, and have come to the conclusion that Vista doesnt like my notebook(Dell Inspiron 6400). To be precise it prefers me to stick with Windows XP Home Edition, and is reluctant to upgrade it. The compatibility report was fine, the only Hardware complaints were - to Upgrade my Bios - i.e. got to A.11 from A.8 The software complaints were - Nero - which I can do without for the time being - McAfee Internet Suite - OMG, no compatibilty with McAfee, allright I'll give Avast...

Maximum PC has an article on how to ‘slipstream’ Windows XP Setup. Am currenlty forced to take this route, got a new SATA HDD and want to install the OS on it, but I gave up the need for floppy drives a long time back. Anyways this ‘slipstreaming’ is interesting. Any one know if Vista supports USB devices as alternate seek locations at setup? XP doesnt, hence the need to slipstream...

A couple of blogs and online magazines asked the question "how will Vista be with games?" "But the big news, obviously, is the new OS. "When people want to show off what Vista and DirectX 10 can do, people will be showing off games. That's what [Microsoft's] executives do," says Wickham. Most will have to wait for a big consumer unveiling of the new OS this coming January at CES, yours truly was on-hand to see Windows Vista in action." - Microsoft's Lisa Sikora, Product Manager for Windows Gaming...
