From neowin.net I came across this game. http://pagehunt.msrlivelabs... Its not exactly a great timer waster but its good for a good 5 minutes before you get bored. I was writing an extension for my blog that uses the MetaWeblog API, so here is what I have learnt about it. It uses XML RPC for communication. So if you are coding in .NET you will need the xml-rpc library from CookComputing. XML-RPC Firstly an Introduction to XML RPC over here (I would recommend reading the whole series posted there) so that you may get an idea of 1. XML RPC Types 2. Request 3. Response 4. Errors (a.k.a. I've been pondering about the lack of a more efficent process for developing MOSS/WSS Solutions (I mean a solution to a business probelm and not a wsp) lately, because believe it or not, when your MOSS Solution contains more than just one component, e.g. WebParts, Features, ASPX pages, Workflows etc, there is no Solution template in Visual Studio where you can add all these project types and have them compile to a single wsp. Its kind of a pain to develop without this functionality. Serge pointed...

"Such and Such a grid should not be blank when there is no data, it should show the column headers with no rows." How many times have you heard that? Yeah, I've seen it as bugs in the change request system!! Seems like a simple enough request, but trying to deliver it sends you straight into the land of GridView hacking. Oh why was such a simple feature not incorporated into the GridView. Microsoft are you listening. Instead you have to jump hoops. Here are some of those hoops that help you solve...

Lord of the Rings Online, a MMORPG from Turbine apparently uses .NET. The system requirements explicitly say so. I am not sure what parts of the game are .NET and which are native code, but I assume that the launcher is written in .NET and I did spy some resource assemblies being downloaded in the update process. The version of .NET required is 1.1 with Service Pack 1. Which means on a Vista box framework 1.1 gets installed in the LOTRO setup. Hmm need to explore more. Anyway's here is 2 incriminating...

I like blogging from Word 2007, it makes redundant all the other blog editors I have had to have in the past and gives me the feature of a Word Processor (coz that's what it is). I even wrote a lil' app for adding Technorati Tags as well. But it's been a little kludgey to get to. I mean to create a new blog post what you have to do is Start Word 2007, click on the 'Office' orb, select new and then double click on new blog post. Craig Tanner (whom I have tremendous respect for) did a podcast on process of creating the RadiantVista Podcasts. In the podcasts Craig mentions that he/they use an open source tool called Audacity for their audio editing. I tried Audacity today and it's pretty good. I am not an audio guru so have no in depth knowledge of what to expect of an audio editor, but as far as I am concerned, audacity lets me do all the basics, select, play, cut, copy, paste, loop. Quite a few folks raved on the blogging feature within Word 2007. See here for a run-down of this neat feature. So I gave it a swirl and found it pretty awesome and so moved away from Live Writer. However with Word lacking the Add Technorati tags feature I thought of dabbling my feat in VSTO and writing a something similar (yes I am ashamed to admit that I've stayed away from VSTO for so long). Its wierd, and I cant make head or tail of it. I was writing a webpart today, and I was maintaining a generic stack collection which I wanted to place in the session. Somewhere around March this year Ron Jacobs published an interview where he discussed Web 2.0 trends in the Enterprise with Dion HinchCliffe on ArcCast. If you have been working with SharePoint for sometime then you'd realize what they speak about in terms of 'Democratisation of Content' isnt something really new. This was something anyone working on SharePoint first got excited about when SharePoint 2003 came out. Harry Pierson (a.k.a DevHawk ;) ) elaborates on this idea on his blog, and more recenly...

I have been a big fan of the Run Command. Primarily because from the app you are currently working with, launching another app is just a few key strokes away. Eg. if you are working with SharePoint, then typical run commands you would use is 'iexplore', 'inetmgr', 'iisreset', 'compmgmt.msc', 'frontpg' etc. Previously I had come across an app called 'ExeCommand' that would let you add entries like the above with an associated path to the registry making it available off the run command. Today I was looking for a tool that would generate wrappers for existing resx files (if you are wondering, yes VS 2005 has corrupted me). I did a bit of googling around and found ResxWrap on SourceForge. Actually I found Codify templates first, but that was a bit too beefy for my requirement. Along the progress of the game you do have 'narratives' which exposes you to various aspects of building the game, character modeling and the technology itself. Fortunately the GTR retains much of the design traits of its skyline predecessors. But as you would see in the Autoblog comments in the link below there is general discontent with the front grill. In addition to this I think Nissan missed out another key Skyline trait, i.e. the horizontal lights. (Whats up with Nissan's fascination vertical lights anyway). I cant see why if Mazda...

This is probably old news by now, but I was only able to catch the repeat today. Renault are the manufacturers champions of the 2005 F1 season. If any of you own a Renault, you probably be proud to have F1 2005 Chapions bumper sticker right now. Good Season for Renault. Infact I might have been doubtfull earlier this season, but now I am sure ‘Blue is the new Red’. Lets wait and see how 2006 goes. So I was at the Mini Tech.Ed Sri Lanka 2005 today. There was an interesting interesting set of topics, but I think I made the wrong choice of following the Developer Track. Most of the sessions were rushed, or were not technical and code oriented enough (a tad too much marketing blah blah) Out of the 4 sessions the best were the 2 done by William Tay, out of which one was really rushed (as he said he had to cut down a topic that he normally takes 3 days to 1 hour), But you know the funny thing about...

A lot of people have already blogged about that Peter Jackson would be a Executive Producer for the Halo Movie. Now I havent played Halo 2 (since its not out on PC yet ;) ) so bare with me if some of this information is stale, but how I would really like the Halo movie to turn out is for it to have a human face. Granted the main actor of the movie would hardly be showing his face as the Master Chief will be in his suit all the time (can you say Robocop?). I wish the movie wouldnt be a 1:1 rendition...

A colleague of mine recently showed me that if you Console.Out.WriteLine in a windows forms app and if you happen to run the app in debug mode through the VS.NET the output actually gets displayed on the Output Window in IDE. That I didnt know, and was momentarily fascinated. Intrigued by that, did a bit of hunting around and came across this MSDN Magazine article. That article is a pretty good read. Apparently the standard output, standard input and standard error streams in app can be redirected....

Shane’s got his list of Messenger SharePoint contacts up. Awesome! One more immidiate requirement I have to get this community rocking. i.e. Basically to write a Messenger plugin that is capable of recording transcripts of these chats. I am thinking of something more like a ‘logging’ contact. That way whenever a SharePoint community site gets rolling, we could have an archive of interesting conversations. This could be a first cut attempt at a more aggressive plan for the future....

Recently I’ve been working with a framework built on top of .NET & Windows Forms, and whenever it crashes (which seems to happen quite frequently in my case) the DW20 process spawns up and pegs the CPU at 100% and writes huge dump files. So what is this DW20.exe process? It’s the Error reporting client that comes with Office 2003 and you can find more about it here. What I am still at a loss to find out is why it spawns up when this framework I am working with crashes...

Mads posted about Power Aggregator from OmniSys, JOPX, Mike Walsh, and whoever is maintaining a list of SharePoint utils, thats another one for you. Personally I think this good. Having information rollup is something that is very critical to the SharePoint story. If it is not it should be, because what sells SharePoint is not only collaboration but also information sharing, and you do not always want the information on a teamsite to stay only at that teamsite. More often than not that information...

A couple of my colleauges who as far as I know have all their life worked with ASP (mind you not ASP.NET, just the now aged ASP) were trying to dip their feet into SharePoint. One of them developing a paticular WSS site kept insisting on the need for an asp include file to create a bit of jazzy navigation. Now as you know SharePoint does not allow include files. So I proposed for all the links to be on a WSS list and then render the navigation by means of DVWP. Yes this can be done, but to create...

Recently I had a requirement where the stakeholder for a WSS Site wanted what I call 'Visual Security' i.e. basically where the interface does not render what the user does not have rights to. The requirement wasnt too extensive, they just wanted a few links to lists and a few list forms hidden if the user didnt have the right to add items. And they werent moved by attempts to convince them that content discovery is a good thing. So in the end had to cough up a POC WebPart simmilar to the Content...

Unless you know how to use it you are going to run into a couple of gotchas. Basically everybody initially stumbles, trying to find a way to get it to display. Well I work on SharePoint, and I currently cant see it running on Windows XP, or justify having an extra test environment for me to play around with it. Next hack to look forward to is to install MSN desktop search on Win2K3. What I know so far is that the contents of the setup (exe) can be extracted....

This one is for all you car enthusiasts. I am sure all of you have most definitely have heard of the Nissan Skyline GTR, yes we are talking about the legend here. And some of you also might know or might be freaked out by Nissans plans for the GTR. Or then again you might be mistaken. The latest I have heard is that the next car to wear the "GTR" badge is going to look like this (image below), and it might not be a Skyline at all. Yes, dissapointing isnt it. It looks more like the Infiniti G35 (Skyline...

Previously being disconnected, spyware wasnt much of an issue, but now I have to fight them off/stay away from them, tie them to a post and burn them (well that sort of thing), and heaven forbid if anything happens to my registry. So here is Chris’s (the nice chap I mentioned in those posts) take on it. The “canary” was implemented to thwart a variety of cross site scripting / single click attacks. Examples include receiving a mail with a link to a malicious web site that then tries to either redirect you to another page or otherwise use your identity...

One of the nice things about SharePoint is that there are many ways of accessing the data. The most obvious is of course the web interface, but to accomplish thight integration with for example Office 2003, SharePoint offers a bunch of web services. These web services provide identically functionality as you get using the web interface; everything you can do in the web interface is possible using the web services! A nice example of the use of these web services is the integration with Office 2003....

Install the assembly to the GAC 3. Copy assembly to c:\inetpub\wwwroot\bin 4. Looks like theres a robot that can do Origami now. - Cool! I can actually imagine this technology being integrated with the printers of the future. Just think of how all those defective printouts can become table ornaments automatically :)

Seems like there are projects moving in and out of GDN. Moving in is fine, but about those moving out. I agree with Dare, about all the problems inherent in GDN. Even though GDN is an excellent idea, it is lacking in capabilities of an online source repository. So why not have Workspace for “GDN Workspaces” or start a .NET port of G-forge or sourceforge? And it looks like Andy is taking notice of all Dares comments...

Paschal has a post at dotnetweblogs on a couple ASP.NET lessons learnt. Just a note to SPS Developers. Dont you think this does not apply to you. One thing you should learn if WebParts are your game, pay close attention to anything that happens in the ASP.NET Custom Server control arena, because they both share the same bloodline. I took a different approach with regard to sharing SPS lessons learnt. What i did was Got the team to put up a SharePoint Social Meeting workspace. Created tab pages for...

No no no; I am not copying the Mobile Minute or .NET Nightly. For all i know this might be a once off thing. Nevertherless Nino and J Avery sure are an inspiration (if this becomes more than a once off thing you guys are acknowledged) Anyway just wanted to publicize some links i found 1. SharePoint free online trial 2. SharePoint on TechNet 3. SharePoint Developer Center on MSDN 4. Michael Greth's Sharepoint Weblog - probably more concise and less confusing than points 2 & 3. Best if you know...

Andy Santo has a tip for SharePoint on weblogs.asp.net If you dont mind Andy, I'd like to add a couple of thoughts to that. 1. If you want the code you write to be useful across many sites, theres one simple solution instead of adding multiple web references(i.e. for every site you want to change). If you peek into the constructor of reference.cs, which is generated when you add a web reference by VS.net you'd see that it has the path to the SharePoint site hardcoded. All you have to do is change...
