Beautifying Code in Visual Studio With Format Document
I don't know about you but to me looks are everything! :-) I have a long way to go before I'm even close to resembling something beautiful but that doesn't mean my code has to suffer the same fate. I don't know about you but I can't stand working with program code or HTML that isn't indented and formatted correctly. I find it hampers my productivity. A Visual Studio feature I use all the time is Format Document. You'll find it on the Edit menu under Advanced. Hope this helps you have a beautiful...

The Shoe is on the Other Foot for VB.NET Developers
I don't think anyone will disagree that our thoughts can play a huge role in our emotions. One thing we have as human beings that sets us apart from every other species on the planet is self-awareness, the unique ability to analyze our thoughts and emotions and make adjustments to our behavior based on that self reflection. The following is for all the VB.NET developers who migrated to .NET from VB6 (or earlier versions). Close your eyes and imagine this scene in your head: Years ago, say in 1998,...

Microsoft's DreamSpark Program Gives Free Developer Tools to Students
This is a story I mentioned in the wrap-up entry for today's Computers 2K8 radio show that I co-host but I also wanted to be sure it got an entry of it's own so people find out about it. Microsoft's DreamSpark program gives university students Microsoft professional-level developer and design tools for FREE. This includes Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition, Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition, Microsoft Expression Studio, and the XNA 2.0 Game Studio. The program is currently available in 11...

Are You "mentally mutilated beyond hope of regeneration"?
According to renowned computer scientist Edsger W. Dijkstra, as an avid Visual Basic developer, I just might be! Are you??? Let me fill you in. Waaaaaay back in 1975 Mr. Dijkstra came up with his list of computer science "unpleasant truths". My two favorites are: 1) "It is practically impossible to teach good programming to students that have had a prior exposure to BASIC: as potential programmers they are mentally mutilated beyond hope of regeneration." Wow, kind of harsh I'd say. While I'm sure...

Thank You Microsoft - MVP for 5th year in a row!
I just want to say a huge THANK YOU to Microsoft and everybody on the VB team. I've been recognized as an MVP for the 5th year in a row and I couldn't be more appreciative and thankful to everyone who had anything to do with me being awarded again. VB ROCKS! ...as does the entire VB team. It's people on the VB team like Beth Massi, who has been doing an outstanding job working with the VB Community BTW, that makes it fantastic being associated with such a great development langauage! Come, leave...

FYI: Join me on geekSpeak Wednesday!
I stole, errrr, borrowed this from Glen Gordon's blog... :-) "Join geekSpeak on Wednesday, August 29 at noon PT (3 PM ET) for a revisit from one of our favorite geekSpeak guests - Jim Duffy. Jim's an MVP for Visual Basic so he'll be chock full of information this time on the use of Generics in Visual Basic, and how a programming language with such humble roots handles this elegant construct. Jim's always a riot to talk to, so make sure you bring your best questions - serious and not-so-serious."...

Sending Emails in .NET with the System.Net.Mail Namespace
They like me, they really, really like me... ok, well, maybe not so much, but the good folks at Microsoft, specifically Beth Massi, Program Manager, VS Core Community, must like me because she posted an article I submitted to her on the Visual Basic Developer Center Community Page. In it I cover all the in's and out's of using the System.Net.Mail namespace to send email from within your .NET Application. Topics such as sending attachments, CC, BCC, specifying the reply-to address, setting message...

Well Beth Massi has been quite the busy little Microsoftie since joining the evil empire. :-) She has put together an ongoing series of "How Do I" videos for helping people learn and work with Visual Basic. SUUUUUH-WEEEEET! GREAT JOB BETH! Have a day

Raleigh Code Camp ROCKED!
If you didn't get a chance to attend the Raleigh Code Camp this past Saturday, you missed a fantastic event! I was fortunate enough to be selected as a speaker and presented my Write Better Code Using the Refactoring Tools in Visual Basic 2005 session. You can find more information about Refactor! on the MSDN site and find a great whitepaper on using it as well. I want to be sure I thank everyone involved starting with all the volunteers from the Triangle .NET User Group, the other speakers, and...
