You wouldn’t drink 9 year old milk would you?
This is an absolutely brilliant campaign to urge users that its time to move on from IE 6. I like how it puts it terms that everyone can understand and has probably experienced at one time or another. How many times have you opened the milk, took a sniff, and experienced that visceral reaction that accompanies catching a whiff of milk that has turned to the dark side of the force? I call it Darth Vader milk. :-) Of course I’m assuming that you haven’t used IE 6 for a long time now. It is our responsibility...

Time Travel 101 or Learning Stuff Faster by Speeding Things Up!
I’m thinking maybe I should have used Time Crunching 101 as the title instead… or maybe ‘Duh Duffy, where have you been? Everyone knows that!” Ok, so maybe you won’t actually learn how to travel through time from this post but you will learn how to cram more learning into one day. We all know you can’t make it to every conference, every presentation, or every training session. The good news is that many of those events make their content available to either watch online or to download for off-line...

Raleigh, NC Most Wired City in U.S.
Wooo hoo!!! We’re #1! We’re 1!! Ok, I’m not Canadian so I’m not talking about hockey. What I am talking about is the latest article from Forbes magazine putting my town, Raleigh, NC, on top of it’s most broadband connected cities in the U.S.! Taken from the article: “Raleigh's win means it ranks higher overall than any other U.S. city in three measures: broadband penetration, broadband access and plentiful wi-fi hot spots. Taken together, the factors point to a populace that readily uses high-speed...

Six Reasons Why Windows 7 Will Win in Business
I came across this PC Mag article and figured I’d share it with you. My primary reason for doing so is to provide additional ammunition to those developers out there who want to upgrade to Windows 7 but management is hesitant to do so. I’ll leave reading the article to you but here are the six reasons stated in the article. 1. Windows XP 2. Stability and Compatibility 3. Aging Hardware 4. Vista: A 3-Year Beta Test 5. Smaller, More Agile Companies 6. Business Demand To me the most significant item...

CSS Designed for Readability or Excuses Not to Comment Your Code
I saw a link to this article (5 Rules To Write More Readable CSS Files) on Twitter this morning, checked it out, and felt the need to share, so here I am sharing. :-) It also reminded me of a funny full-page ad I tore out of a programming magazine many years ago that listed excuses for not commenting your programming code. I think the ad was for an COBOL comments generator or some type of utility like that. I’m sure I kept that magazine page and have it somewhere around here but where it is today...

Microsoft Previews Office 2010 to Developers
First paragraph from this article posted today on PCMag.com: “At its Worldwide Partner Conference Monday, Microsoft unveiled the next generation of one of the most popularly used pieces of software in history, Microsoft Office, delivering a "Technical Preview" to partners and developers.” New features look pretty cool. I’m anxious to see the online versions of the different apps and how well the document sharing and collaboration features work. Are you doing any Office development? Have a day. :-|...

Getting a business degree from Dungeons & Dragons U!
While I personally have never played the game, I do understand that a number of you out here in geekdom have logged many hours doing battle a dragon’s liar. Here’s an article pointing out the 10 Business Lessons I Learned from Playing Dungeons & Dragons. I personally think that #5, “The best quests require a mixture of skills in the party”, totally applies to assembling a successful software development team. Notice it didn’t say “mixture of people”, it said “mixture of skills”. As we all know,...

The channel will air 24 hours of Rush on September 29th." SUH-WEEEEET!!! UPDATE #1: You can find the VH1 Classic schedule for the day here. UPDATE #2: I'm watching it right now!! Have a day. :-|...

Jerry Seinfeld Is Going to Be a Celebrity Pitchman for Microsoft, Not that there's anything wrong with that...
Looks like Microsoft is pulling out the big guns in it's war against Apple... Fox News is reporting that Jerry Seinfeld has been brought in to appear in upcoming Microsoft ads. Looks like Microsoft is serious about stopping any market share shrinkage. I wonder if the ad agency working for Microsoft is the same agency working for Vandelay Industries. I can see it now... Apple hires Newman (actor Wayne Knight) to make a cameo appearance in the Mac vs PC ads! I wonder who Elaine would find more sponge-worthy,...
