Notes From Computers 2K7 Radio Show! (September 23rd, 2007)

"Good morning everybody, you're tuned to Computers 2K7 on sports radio 850 The Buzz" and so began last Sunday's show as we do every Sunday morning from 8am - 10am here in Raleigh, NC. You can download the show from the show's website.

Here a a few links to some of the stories I reported on and/or topics we discussed inspired by our callers.

Microsoft Sysinternals

In response to a story I mentioned about old hard drives still having plenty of sensitive information on them, we got on the topic of utilities for wiping a drive clean and other system utilities. Chris Love called the show and mentioned one of his favorite sites for free utilities is the Microsoft Sysinternals site. Check it out, there are plenty of utilities there to keep you busy.

What system utilities do you rely on? Shoot me some feedback and I'll relay it on to our audience on this weekend's show.

Have you heard of Woot??

I hadn't until this past week. I stumbled upon WOOT.COM and was quite amused by their business model. They are an on-line store that only sells ONE ITEM per day. Once it sells out, they don't sell anything else that day and no, you can't order what they had on sale previously. You get it that day or you don't get it at all! Prices are VERY attractive but you've got to move fast if you want the item of the day.

Happy 25th Birthday to the 'Smiley' Emoticon!

I couldn't help but report on this story since I use them all the time! :-)

Western Digital Adds Three New Additions to My Book External Drive Product Line

My Book Essential, My Book Home, and My Book Office editions come in sizes ranging from 320GB to 1TB! The Office edition offers remote access to the drive across the Internet and comes with automatic, continuous backup software. The Home also comes with the backup software and a capacity gauge to tell you how much space is left. The Essential edition offers USB 2.0 connectivity only and does NOT come with the backup software. Read more about them here.

As usual, we had a caller or two ask about anti-virus software and we're currently recommending the free version from AVG and for spyware we recommend users download Microsoft Defender.

Have a day.  :-|
