If you are going to be in San Francisco or surrounding areas I would recommend attending SharePoint Saturday San Francisco. It will be just as good as all the other SPS events, such as Tulsa, New York, Virginia Beach, Kansas City, etc… The link for the event is http://www.sharepointsaturd... It looks like Paul Schaeflein, Michael Lotter, and others will be presenting. San Francisco is a nice city. You could check out Fisherman’s Wharf and the second largest Chinatown in the country. ...
I spent hours trying to figure out why my ASP.Net page, which uses a master page with a RadGrid surrounded by a RadAjaxPanel with an AjaxLoadingPanel, would not show the loading message. I would click on the link to the page in the site menu, then IE would sit and spin for a while until it loaded the entire page, rather than loading the page right away but showing the loading spinner until the data was returned. What I had to do was add this javascript (w/jQuery) to the user control that the grid ...
First of all, thanks to all those brilliant people who made the long arduous journey to the UK (and to all those who just happened to be near by). I know it must have killed you to be so far away for so long. I can only imagine how hard it was for you. All of us that couldn’t go really feel for you and feel your pain. Okay! So, for those of us that couldn’t go, some of these guys really did a tremendous job of twittering what was going on during the conference. They absolutely did not have to do ...
We have been busy organizing a number of community events. I would like to share some events Regina.NET has been working on and other community events. All the below events are free and open to the public. Regina.NET Date: April 8th @ 6 PM Speaker: Rod Paddock Topic: JQuery with ASP.NET Web 2.0 is here to stay. jQuery is a JavaScript library that abstracts away all of the gory details of working with JavaScript for web applicatons. This session will demonstrate how to add jQuery to your ASP.NET applications ...
I’m in conversation with a group that’s using Ext JS for their RIA. As I haven’t used it, I thought I’d go ask at the international water fountain that is twitter about it. Anyone using Ext JS? Thoughts compared to jQuery or Prototype/Scriptaculous?about 3 hours ago from TweetDeck Read the responses I got back from a number of industry leader and JavaScript experts at Antidotal info on JavaScript Library Ext JS ...
My journey with jQuery has actually began last month when along with ASP.NET MVC I started exploring the different features provided by jQuery and related plugins.I am simple amazed at the overall design of jQuery core and also by functionalities provided by the various plugins built around jQuery.I am planing to write a series of posts with my observations on jQuery and this happens to be the first in that series. In this post I will discuss about the magical ready() function in jQuery.I always ...
This is a short post about me and what I do. Again, trying to keep it short as not to bore anyone. I have been coding for legit gigs for about 12 years and programming on my own for well over 15. I have a background in music and graphic arts as well. Currently I am working for a very large company (80k+ employees) doing SharePoint development. I, like most developers, have a love-hate relationship that is rather unhealthy but I just can’t quit it. It’s this relationship that has driven me to write ...
Recently I was working on a project where the need for rotating ad functionality was needed. The site used Ektron and one of the content blocks was required to rotate between three different pieces of content. The first go at this resulted in an implementation that used the MooTools javascript framework. This implementation achieved the desired functionality, with the different pieces of content rotating between each other. However, this implementation also resulted in a feature (as we developers ...
About a year ago, I started to evaluate ASP.Net MVC, but decided to put it aside because it was still in heavy-duty development. With the official release a couple of weeks ago, I decided to check it out once again. MVC has a lot of things to offer, but there are a few critical things that we couldn’t overlook. We have a few web applications that all have quite a lot invested in server controls (both third-party and developed in-house). In ASP.Net WebForms, for something as simple as a GridView with ...

Why did I start a Blog? welcome to my world of blogging, this is my first. Why did I start a Blog? First to express myself and to also contribute to the medium that has support my career (Internet). it is also my goal to achive MVP status soonest. What do I plan to cover here? Almost everything related to the technology and developer community. I will be writing .NET code snippets, talk about javascript, fiddle with jQuery, cover new product releases, write about new technologies as I encounter them, ...
I was talking with a colleague yesterday about the free MVC eBook that was released, and he noticed that the book was using MVC 1.0 and not the release candidates. We figured it was because the full book that the eBook is part of was going to be released in May sometimes, which version 1.0 would be released sometime before then. Well it looks like “sometime” was yesterday. You can hit this link to download ASP.NET MVC 1.0! According to this guy, the fixes from RC2 to 1.0 relate to the version of ...
Here's what's happening: Attendees: 428 Sessions: 73 Speakers: 49 Tracks: 15 Sessions: ASP.NET Make your Data Dance with ASP.NET Dynamic Databy Shawn Weisfeld + Show Description ASP.NET Dynamic Data is a framework that lets you create data-driven ASP.NET Web applications easily. Web.Routing, ani System.Web.Abstractions. I moze sie ...

I will be talking about how to create jQuery plugins at DC ALT.NET next week.
It will be held in the
Motley Fool headquarters on February 25 @ 7PM.
A couple of weeks ago, I was working on some client side UI elements on one of my projects. I was able to apply some things that I have learned recently (some more recently than others). The problem is that I have a domain object that tracks the selected days of the week. Currently the object uses a List<DayOfWeek> to manage the selections. (This is not exactly the most safe thing because a client could set the list to null. However, that's a different subject.) What I was looking for was an ...
Today I was faced with an unusual task: I needed to find a way to nullify an element's style attribute, i.e.: <br style="clear: both"> The style's clear:both was causing some unnecessary whitespace. I couldn't change the style attribute directly because it was on a Master page that I didn't have the permission to modify. I am not sure if there is a way to do this using CSS alone (element style takes precedence over any css class). My Solution Step 1: Hide the offending <br> element // ...
A couple of weeks back I attended a session on Unobtrusive JavaScript (UJS) and jQuery by John Teague. This was probably the biggest thing I took from the Houston TechFest. Recently, I found the opportunity to put my new knowledge to good use. I haven't reach the unobtrusive part of John's presentation, but jQuery is my first step. Documentation I found the jQuery API documentation to be invaluable. At first, as a reference, it was a little difficult to find what I need. For example the "val()" function. ...
My current project involves integrating legacy Prototype code with jQuery. Normally the solution would be to just change all the $(object) references to jQuery(object). However, one of the constraints was I couldn't modify any of the jQuery code, and Prototype does NOT give you any way to rename the $ variable. I discovered this hack while trying to find a way around this: <script type="text/javascript" src="jquery-1.2.3.min.js"&g... <script type="text/javascript" src="prototype.js"></... ...
I've had a tip off to check two killer apps. First is JQuery. It was plugged to me as the new mootools! Completly supporting older browsers, it's on-site samples and documentation are ment to be excellent. It is also compatible with Google's JTools. Second is IETester. Useful if you need to test your sites on multiple IE versions and their equivilent JavaScript engines. It is a "free WebBrowser that allows you to have the rendering and javascript engines of IE8 beta 2, IE7 IE 6 and IE5.5 on Vista ...
I need to show popup info message with single close button, but content is located in separate html file. The current implementation using window.open not working for many users with popup blockers. Then I found question http://stackoverflow.com/qu... ...
I attended the Houston TechFest today, and am now finding it difficult to sleep with all of the new knowledge and relationships filling my mind. I finally decided to get out of bed and put some of my thoughts in writing. The Fest was great. There are a few good reasons to attend an event like this. It's free. You get to meet new people with common interests. Employment opportunities are there if you are looking for them. You almost certainly learn something (if not many things). There are lot's of ...
It seems everyone is publishing their goals for the year. I had some goals in my head, but I thought I would mind map them and publish them as well. I learned about this thought-organization technique at Codemash and I really got a lot out of the exercise. My goals are broken down into four main categories: Health, Profession, Family and Enrichment. Many elements of these categories bleed into other categories, but here is my best attempt to unravel my mind-mapped goals for 2009. Health Exercize ...
I was asked on Friday by a friend how one can consume JSON in Silverlight. At the time, I just said start with the System.Json namespace and I’ll get you a sample later. Well, here’s a sample and a peek into my head because I couldn’t just stop with creating the sample that he needed. In the end, I did a couple of different Silverlight examples including leveraging the JsonObject and LINQ. Then I ended up doing samples in raw JavaScript, MSAjax, Prototype and JQuery. Finally I ended it all up by ...
Yesterday morning came earlier than usual so I could trek to Reston, VA for the Washington DC MSDN Developer Conference, however, it was WELL worth it! Stephen Walther gave the keynote, hitting all the high-points of Azure and how it will play such a prominent role in future .NET development. I spent the rest of my day in the Client and Presentation room hearing Dave Hoerster present on ASP.NET and jquery, Frank La Vigne present on WPF DataGrid and Ribbon Controls, Pete Brown present on Building ...
For those of you that may know, and those of you that don’t, I was scheduled to go to PDC 2008. The the inevitable happened. We ended up having issues with a third party vendor the week before I was scheduled to go. We also ended up having other issues and scheduling conflict that all came together to mean one thing, I MISSED PDC! I was so excited, I had never been a part of an organization that was will for me to go to one of the top conferences. But, the world’s aligned to keep me from my dream. ...

The current project I am starting we are debating using a win form client vs a web client. I feel like I have done this argument (discussion) many times. In the past I have always felt that you had more control with a winform. Now with new tools such as ajax, jquery, and css, we are able to make our web applications seem like win forms.
Which do you prefer? I realize that requirements drive decisions, but I would love to hear stories or thoughts?
In the post below I am going to run down a short-list of some of the less-popular performance tips and the reasoning behind them. There are loads of blog postings and articles on asp.net performance enhancements, and I urge you to check those out as well. Onto the good stuff... Session.ReadWrite versus Session.ReadOnly It goes without saying that using the Session object will incur some performance overhead so if possible it should be turned off in the web.config. That said, If you’re using the Session ...
A big Thank you to Lee Brandt for organizing a great event in good ole Kansas City. There was a great turn out for the event and the event was very well organized. I reluctantly took on presenting jQuery for the Day of Dot Net event, but I am glad I let Lee talk me into it. It feels great to be presenting. (If you can get passed the fear of public speaking.) For those of you who attended my jQuery presentation, Thank you to you as well. I hope it was enlightening and if you’re not using a javascript ...
Though some of you that were on the fence or have not year head about the MSDN Dev Con, are now more interested in coming out. It’s a tiny price compared to PDC and is coming to a city near you! A good group of local celebrities will be presenting along side proven Microsoft experts at the Orlando event. I will be in the attendance and around any community areas. And any social after event :) Bayer White (Jacksonville), Joe Homnick (Boca Raton), Christopher Bennage (Tallahassee), Rob Eisenberg (Tallahassee) ...
Hi!, As all of you (I hope) I want to have something similar to Intellisense everywhere. So also I want it in JavaScript and particularly in jQuery. Yeah, yeah, I know, that we have Script# and even M$ uses it, but I want pure JS and pure jQuery. I become very as jQuery team brought us Visual Studio Documentation for jQuery. It is on their site in download section. Works very nice and start its help as soon as you start typing, $ goes first then identifier in brackets and after $("sth"). there is ...
I've inherited a BizTalk 2006 applicaton that uses serveral SOAP ports to request data from a 3rd party web service. The web service is secured by "basic" authentication - username / password. After making a few enhancements to the application I deployed to an integration test server which has access to the 3rd party web service. The BizTalk app was unable to retrieve the data and I soon realised that I had forgotten to set the username / password on the SOAP send ports. I wanted the make deployment ...
How do you stay up on new technologies? How do you approach learning a specific new technology? The first thing you have to accept is that the Microsoft technology stack has gotten so vast that it is simply impossible for a single person to be an expert in everything. This is the most important aspect to remember. This post is simply to describe my personal approach for staying up on new technologies in the hopes that other people will find something valuable in this to add to their toolbox. In terms ...
If you're in the Kansas City area and you haven't heard about Kansas City Day of .NET (or KCDODN) then you're missing out. KCDODN is Saturday, December 6th at the Centriq Training center. Rick Strahl from West Wind Technologies in Maui, Hawaii is sharing his presentation that he did at the ASP.NET Connections recently held in Vegas. His session on jQuery with ASP.NET includes his slide deck and several samples for you to view. His slide deck is very informative with how things work along with some do's and don'ts. Check it out to learn more about jQuery. Technorati Tags: Microsoft, jQuery, Visual Studio ...
I just read the MSDN article on the Visual Round Trip Analyzer. This tool is awesome for finding bottlenecks in your web applications. It also allows you to see where your expensive download points are. With this tool I discovered that if I put a parameter after my large javascripts, such as JQuery, I can set the content expiration in the headers for 1 year. Then any time I need to change the javascript file (also works with images, css, etc...) the browser will then treat the file as new and redownload ...
Here's a simple way to avoid postbacks in your site, still be SEO friendly and degrade gracefully to JavaScript free browsers (and handle middle clicks and copy&paste) in ASP.NET MVC using jQuery. First, we'll create an alternate MasterPage called No.master with no content, only one ContentPlaceHolder: <asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="MainContent" runat="server" /> Now, we're able to tell via HTTP Headers if a Request is an Ajax Request, so we'll write a new method in our Controller Base class ...
I thought I would share the sessions at the PDC I really enjoyed and would recommend for viewing for those that didn't attend. And you know who you are. :) And those who did attend but didn't get to watch these. I'm sure there are more that were great, but these are the ones that stuck out to me. Deep Dive: Dynamic Languages in Microsoft .NET Jim Hugunin gives a great session on Dynamic Languages. This was the best talk I went to the entire PDC so I'm listing it first, but you should watch The Future ...
NOTE: In this series I build a blogengine using ASP.NET MVC and jQuery from scratch in order to learn more about these new technologies. If you haven't read the first post in this series, I would encourage you do to that first, or check out the jBlogMvc category. You can also always subscribe to the feeds. jBlogMvc is converted to be used on ASP.NET MVC Beta 1 if you haven't downloaded it yet you can find it here, to read about the changes and additions in the beta 1 I do recommend reading ScottGu's ...

Here at PDC, Los Angeles, there is one thing for sure. ASP.NET Sessions are overflowing invariably across all days. Yes! There are way too many exciting things that I can cover over a single post and in this short duration that I wanted to keep them off until I am back. Quick announcements. jQuery a fast and concise JavaScript Library has release a version with autocomplete documentation for Visual Studio. You can find it
here next to al other versions.
Please don't use the Visual Studio version on production machines, it's way bigger than the other versions of jQuery.
This keynote is all about Windows 7 (the Vista that shoulda been) and new things from ScottGu's team. While yesterday was about the back-end infrastructure of the new cloud platform Azure from Microsoft, today's keynote focused on the front end of Microsoft. One funny question from Ray Ozzie was wondering what we would do at work all day if we didn't have a computer on our desk. Here are some random notes from the keynote. "The PC will be more relevant in the next era." - Ray Ozzie Today we barely ...
