This past week I have been accessing a remote server by remote desktop access from a Windows 7 PC. Whilst I could save the password, windows 7 will not use it if the remote system is not fully verified. The fix is excellently documented at http://www.perceptible.net/... I used it and the connection process stopped asking for the password to be re-entered! (n.b. no gpedit -force is required) ...

The news hit Monday morning that Google has decided to delay the release of its Google TV platform, and has asked its OEMs to delay any products that embed the software. Coming just about two weeks prior to the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Google’s timing is about the worst imaginable. CES is where the platform should have had its coming out party, especially given all the anticipation that has built up since its initial announcement came 7 months ago. At last year’s CES, it seemed every ...
I have been in the market for a new computer for several months. I set out with a budget of around $1200. I knew up front that the machine would be used for developing applications and maybe some light gaming. I kept switching between buying a laptop or a desktop but the laptop won because: With a Laptop, I can carry it everywhere and with a desktop I can’t. I searched for about 2 weeks and narrowed it down to a list of must-have’s : i7 Processor (I wasn’t going to settle for an i5 or AMD. I wanted ...

Apparently it's hard to locate a free ISO mapper these days.  Like most people I've use Microsoft's Virtual CD ROM to mount ISO images on XP and server 2003 machines.   This will not work in Windows 7 and Server 2008 machines.  Therefore, I recommend people try out magic ISO instead.   It's freeware and can be downloaded from the following URL.

I recently had to mount an ISO image on a 64-bit Windows 7 PC. My ususal utility would no longer work as the driver is 32-bit. The answer I eventually found out is to use 7-zip from http://www.7-zip.org/

Not only is this an excellent compression program but it will also open an ISO file.

Let’s face it: not everybody can afford a full-blown Surface unit in his or her house. But most of us can afford a windows 7 touch enabled computer. The prices for these kind of devices have dropped a lot since the introduction of Windows 7. Companies such as Dell, HP and others offer notebooks as well as desktop systems that can handle multi-touch for a reasonable price. And with touch you’re halfway there. What you don’t have is the object recognition of the Surface. And the rigidity of the Surface ...
Problem: For the last few months I have been running the SSIS Import/Export Wizard and it has been throwing up an "Unexpected Unrecoverable Error". The three buttons – Abort, Retry and Ignore – all cause the wizard to close. I am running SQL Management Studio 2008 R2 on my Windows 7 x86 computer. This would happen sporadically but consistently when I would try to save the SSIS package or when I would try to display an error message. Solution: Edit the file "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\Binn\DTSWiza... ...
Even though I'm running Windows 7, I still need to fire up Visual Basic 6 every once in a while to maintain my employer's ancient apps. The steps below were put together from a few posts on different sites; mostly for Vista, but so far everything has been running smoothly on 7 for me. Create a 0-byte file in the C:\Windows directory called msjava.dll. Don't just install via the Autorun executable; instead browse the Visual Studio 6 CD (or folder), right-click Setup.exe and select Run As Administrator. ...
[Update 2010-11-03] This is really strange as I can restore the Vista Home Premium onto that machine and it works. Also, I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate and it works fine, too. The curiosity will probably prompt me to try installing it again, but downloading the images from TechNet is taking me 3 days so far. ;) Thanks, AreyouSerious, I'll try your suggestion, too. [Original Post] I'm hitting a really strange Vista Ultimate install issue. After the installation, the Windows Update cannot find ...
Last week my office integration from Team Explorer stopped working. the Team menu in excel was gone and when I tried to open a WI-query from VS I got this error message: TF80012: The document cannot be opened because there is a problem with the installation of the Microsoft Visual Studio v10.0 Team foundation Office integration components. Please see the Team Foundation Installation Guide for more information. First I tried to fix this by repairing the Team Explorer, this did not fix the problem. ...
In my last post, I introduced TouchToolkit – a toolkit for developing touch-enabled applications. This is the first of a multi-part post where I will explain how TouchToolkit can help simplify the development process of multi-touch applications in Silverlight or WPF 4.0. While we can use the recorded touch interactions (I will explain the recorder module in another post), its better to have a touch-enabled device (e.g. Dell XT2) or an emulator (e.g. MultiTouchVista) to test the application. First, ...
If you’re like me and still have a significant quantity of music in m4p format that’s preventing you for the time being from dumping iTunes, you are stuck with QuickTime too. This would not be so bad but for the fact that QuickTime is almost virus-like in its control of PNG display in Internet Explorer. Disabling the QuickTime add-on in IE just caused it to ask me to run the QuickTime add-on every time I navigated to a bare PNG file (one not embedded in an HTML file). Going into Control Panel->Default ...

If you hit this issue and are pretty sure that you have downloaded the AjaxControlToolkit and configured it, the primary source of this error is that you haven’t added a script manager in the page where you are trying to use the toolkit control. Lets examine more into this. Setting up the Toolkit AjaxControlToolkit is a set of ajax enabled controls available for free download right from the ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX days and has evolved into various versions. It was moved to CodePlex couple of years back. ...
Back in April I began to work with Oracle again after a multiple year absence from doing so. So naturally I decided I would install Oracle on my home system so I could reacquaint myself with it. That proved to be more difficult than I expected. I was able to get Oracle 10g Express downloaded and installed but could not connect to it. So, to save someone else some of the grief I went through let me go through the final sequence of steps that resulted in a solid working Oracle development environment. ...

I am using the mouse with my left hand but I am not swapping the mouse buttons. (Old habit from the times I was using public workstations at the university. I was too lazy to play with the system setup every time, so that I just moved the mouse from the right to the left side.) I am also using multiple pointing devices with my notebook. (a gaming mouse with multiple buttons at home, a simpler one at work, and also from time to time the touchpad ). Normally I would setup the mouse button layout in ...

If you cannot ping a Windows 7 box, don't just disable the Windows Firewall.  See the following page describing how to enable the included ICMP Echo rule in the Windows Firewall:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r5359816-allow_ping_icmp_echo_request_windows_7

Note that I shut down the Windows Firewall service (net stop mpssvc) and this did not "re-enable" ping.  I had to add the firewall rule.  There may be another solution, but this solved my problem.

I installed the new BizTalk Server 2010 Developer Edition, released a couple of days ago, on a Windows Server 2008 R2 virtual image. The installation went very smoothly, but I did notice one problem. Initially I attempted to upgrade the beta version of BizTalk Server. Brian Loesgen reports that this worked OK for him. However, I couldn't do this. The installer reported that upgrade from the Enterprise Edition to the Developer Edition is not supported. I attempted to uninstall the beta, but got an ...

Recently, I had to hard reset my HTC Touch phone running Windows Mobile 6.1. Post that, I couldn’t connect my Touch with the PC using Active Sync (Windows Mobile Device Center). That is, WMDC stopped popping up, when plugging the phone through USB. I was troubleshooting and thought that WMDC might have been corrupted and went ahead and removed it. I reinstalled, did soft reset of the phone, restarted the machine and did everything that I could see in some forums. The phone would be detected by the ...

For those of you who have pinned any program to your Windows 7 taskbar, you can hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys when clicking the icon and it will launch it with Administrator privileges. I use this frequently when I need to run Visual Studio 2010 with Administrator privileges, but it will work with any program. Now I just need someone to write a VS2010 Extension to relaunch VS2010 with Administrative privileges for the same Solution file. Maybe I have a new project on my hands... Rob ...
I’ve been using a utility for the last couple of years that organizes my desktop – Stardock Fences – and I was going to write up a review saying how cool and useful it is. However, others have already done that here and here (and many more via Google). So instead of rehashing those reviews, I’ll just say this: I find that the hiding icons feature and the screen resize features are great when I’m using my laptop for presentations. I’ve used this utility on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 R2, and Windows ...
Update 1 (Sept. 17, 2010): While the part below about using SLSvcUtil.exe to generate the service reference undoubtedly still works, it is no longer necessary. ChannelFactory and related methods remain unsupported. For more details see http://msdn.microsoft.com/e... (Networking ...
…make a LEMON GRENADE! I blogged a few days ago about this maddening issue with VS.NET 2010 and not being able to use the designer for ASP.NET 3.5 projects or add an EF model file to a .NET 4.0 project (You can read all the gory details here). Well my friends, I’m happy to report that I have a solution! Well, not a solution…but a workaround…kinda like how they dumped Megatron into the ocean at the end of Transformers instead of dismantling him: the threat is still there, just dormant. Unfortunately ...
It has been a while since my last blog post. I have been busy and lazy at the same time and couldn't find the time to get around posting new blog posts. I have been thinking of writing a blog post series on ASP.NET MVC for Web Forms Programmers. Especially because I am planning to give presentations at .NET User Group meetings and Code Camps starting this October-November. So, now I need to buy a 17" screen laptop with Windows 7 64-bit with 8GB RAM. I have always been a Desktop guy because I hate ...
UPDATE: 22/09/2010. I have posted an update on this issue. My root problem turned out to overheating, although I still advocate a number of optimisations for VirtualBox. I have a Dell laptop with 8GB RAM and a dual core processor running Windows 7. I use my machine quite intensively. Quite often I run virtual images under Oracle's VirtualBox. I'm currently using an image that contains an installation of the BizTalk Server 2010 beta. For months, I found that every time I fired up images under VirtualBox, ...
I blogged last month about an unsolved mystery I was experiencing, which I dubbed the Mystery of the Uncooperative EF Model and the Missing Target Frameworks. Since then, I’ve since expanded that to include the Mystery of why VS.NET 2010 can’t seem to resolve where my .NET 3.5 assemblies reside. Because of all this, let’s just go with the title of this blog, or as it’ll be known in its European release: HOOPED – a boy and his VS.NET installation. Without getting too wordy, let me give you the recent ...
I’ve been running into some blue-screens with Windows 7 64bit lately (what I thought was related to a video card driver might be a more widespread problem with Direct X, but that’s for another post). Of course, trying to read those demps (or even get into them to access the info) can be daunting. I found a freeware tool called BlueScreenView from NirSoft. It scans your dumps and gives you information in a way much more digestible. If you’re interested and want to learn more about it, visit the site ...

Microsoft introduced TCP/IP Auto tuning with Vista and Windows 2008 server. Its also a part of Windows 7 and 2008 R2. This feature resizes IP packets which can improve network performance. Older network devices, however, like Cisco PIX firewalls do not support Auto tuning and can cause connection issues. I had a client that was getting email undeliverable errors from a certain domain while successfully sending to various others. After investigating OBL listings and various other possible culprits, ...
One of the new features of XNA 4.0 is the Content Project. Those of us who’ve worked in XNA 3.1 and earlier are familiar with the old Content folder, which was simply a folder inside your game project into which you’d place your raw content and from which your game would load the compiled XNB files. In theory it could be named anything since one of the things you would do in the constructor for your game is specify the name of the Content folder. XNA 4.0 has moved content (i.e. game assets like music, ...

Like the style and theme of Microsoft Expression Blend? Me too! Want to get this look? Here is how: Historically I liked the darker chrome in Windows since Vista.
