I was working on some animations the other day. To make a long story short, I had a Listbox in a Grid that needed to flip. Think of a page-flip like animation. Of course, on the other side of the page there is another page. Otherwise, why bother turning it? The basic techniques for this is quite simple. I defined two listboxes, one was turned around by using the PlaneProjection and set the Y-Rotation to 180.0. In the grid that housed the listboxes I put both listboxes on top of each other, the first ...
A couple of days ago I had the wonderful surprise to find a mention (and a link!) to MVVM Light on USAToday.com. The article talks about the new USA Today app available for Windows Phone 7. MVVM Light is mentioned as well as JSON.NET just after the high quality of the development tools is mentioned: “That same high bar for tools extends into the community as well. MVVM Light and JSON.Net were extremely useful moving past mundane tasks and instead getting to the business of building our app.” – Tim ...

You probably have already visited Channel 9, and if you have not I would recommend to definitely check it out. There are literally thousands of videos about development using Microsoft technologies (and more). You can watch the videos on the site using Silverlight player or you can use links on each video page for downloading. This usually works fine if you are interested in just one or a small number of videos, but it might become somewhat tedious if you want to download a bunch of them. I recently ...

For Microsoft these days, great things are happening at the macro level, and yet there’s fits-and-starts progress down below. This year’s Tech Ed North America conference represented, in event-form, that very duality. On the one hand, this was the largest Tech Ed in my memory, with 10,000 attendees. But the customary Microsoft 2-day, all-morning keynote format was shortened to a Day 1, 90-minute talk on Cloud and Visual Studio. Microsoft’s cloud push reached an almost fever pitch; but various new ...

In case you missed it, the Windows Phone Hackathon was last night. TechEd attendees and community folks from around Atlanta showed up to get some free training on Windows Phone development (Silverlight, XNA, Azure) and have some Q&A with various subject matter experts (and free help with their projects.) We had a really good turnout, with most people in the Silverlight room learning about making apps. We had a few folks in the XNA room, some who were brand new to XNA and others who were already ...

If you're in Seattle or will be in Seattle, well ok ... actually Redmond, the 2nd week of June, and you've got some time and money to invest in your career, Alex Golesh announced a great opportunity. Alex is a Silverlight MVP, and way back in February of 2010, I saw the WP7 emulator running on his laptop at the MVP Summit... that means he's been involved since before they told all of us at the Summit that we were now WP7 devs! Introduction In the first part of the “Game-changing Features in the Silverlight 5 Beta,” I investigated how to debug XAML in Silverlight 5. Now, it is time to explore another feature called Multiple Window Support, where I will review its abilities within a Silverlight 5 application. If you followed my previous tutorial, then you should be ready to get started. The full source code for the project is available as a separate download with this article. The full article is hosted on SSWUG and you ...
This has been a fantastic week of XNA activity and news. Standing ovation the the XNA Team for the interaction they’ve been having with the community as well as the new features they’ve been rolling out for Xbox LIVE Indie Game developers. Simply outstanding and I can’t wait to see what might be coming next. It’s also been a fun week to watch people’s Dream Build Play projects inch ever closer to completion. With the submission deadline coming up in June this is the crunch time for many developers. ...

I will be speaking at the Carolina Code Camp this weekend http://codecamp.developersg... There will be 45 sessions by 30 different speakers spread over 9 tracks. It should be a good time. The biggest problem for anyone attending is deciding which sessions to go to. With 9 tracks there will be many great sessions going on at the same time. From a presenter perspective, that ups the ante. I am very much aware that when I am speaking there are 8 other folks that you could be hearing instead. ...

Introduction I don’t do web programming… I have been programming client applications for years and consider myself a WPF/Silverlight developer. The web thing always seemed a bit scary in its stateless environment with limited functionality and cross browser headaches. That was until recently when apparently HTML5 was going to kill Silverlight and I eventually decided that I would need to get educated and up to date. Since that decision I have re-accustomed myself with HTML, CSS & JavaScript. ...
Lately, I have been taking some time to learn some new technologies. For me, the best way to learn a new technology is to jump head first into a project: Daily deal websites such as GroupOn, LivingSocial, DealFind, etc. have really taken off over the last 6 months. With so many sites out there, my inbox was being flooded with emails from all these daily deal websites. This seemed like it might be a fun project, so I set out to build a daily deal aggregator. First, I built a Windows Phone 7 app. I ...

There was already a version of MVVM Light on Nuget before. However the old version did not support Windows Phone 7. This is now corrected. Also the new version now adds a ViewModelLocator to your project and includes it in App.xaml. What is NuGet? NuGet is a mechanism allowing to add packages (assemblies, source code…) to an existing project. All versions of MVVM Light are supported (WPF3.5, WPF4, Silverlight 3, Silverlight 4, Windows Phone 7). In order to install NuGet and learn more about this ...

I had a blog reader ask me this question: I see the INotifyPropertyChanged in demos all of the time, most of the time it is in a huge MVVM project and I cannot wrap my head around why it is important and why should I use it. Can you create a simple demo that shows off the feature? I looked around on the net but couldn’t find something simple. I decided to write a quick demo and hopefully it helps clear things up. If you want to go ahead and grab the source code then it is provided here. (Please note: ...

This week has been an interesting one. Lots of ups and downs in the XNA Community and lots of things that we’re not sure yet if it’s an up or down. One of the biggest changes that happened was that the Top Downloads list on Xbox.com and on the Xbox dashboard is now calculated differently for Xbox LIVE Indie Games. It’s still not clear what impact this is going to have (although I know it feels pretty clear to some of you in the community!) but this lead to some interesting things. One, we got to ...
