5 Stored Procedures Optimization Tips 1. Use stored procedures instead of heavy-duty queries. This can reduce network traffic as your client will send to the server only the stored procedure name (perhaps with some parameters) instead of all the text from a large heavy-duty query. Stored procedures can be used to enhance security as well. For example, you can give the users permission to execute the stored procedure to work with restricted sets of columns and data. 2. Call stored procedures using ...
I was recently on a project that required me to move SharePoint content to SQL Database. As I searched the best way to do this, I thought of a timer job that would run nightly and move the data to SQL, a co-worker who is a SQL expert suggested I use SSIS to move the data over. I started searching online and came up with a couple of options the most notable being the technet article. The problem with the example on technet is that it uses a custom connector that connect one Document library or List ...
Cannot map the lookup column, 'ID', because the column data type is a binary large object block (BLOB) There is a possibility that you might get this error while working in SSIS and trying to do a lookup to a csv file. In this case your destination columns might be of type (BLOB) - Long Text / Ntext and you might face this error And I tried a lot to convert the data inside the lookup column to varchar but it was constantly throwing an error : I tried : select cast(ID as varchar) as ID from table1 ...
My reading focuses very much around the technologies I work with. During TechEd 2010 North America I found some very good reads that are helping me prep for the new things out and also to establish recommended practices in their implementation. Here are the titles. It looks like a spot for Wrox, but they have hit hard and early with great content, and some friends happen to have participated in their creation ...
SQL Server 2008 R2 Best Practices Analyzer is a diagnostic tool that gathers information about the server and the SQL Server instances installed (2008 and 2008 R2). It checks for configuration settings following recommended best practices and reports on configuration settings that deviate from those recommendations. Download: http://www.microsoft.com/do... ...
Note: I've translated this article from my Portugues blog: http://pontonetpt.com/blogs... I'm sorry for the bad english, but i'll try to translatet it better as possible with a little help of Google Translatter. I've writed this article because i coulnd't found one article about NHibernate 2.0 that was simple to understand in Portuguese. In the coming weeks I will spend some free time studying NHibernate. I've heard very good reviews ...
WordPress is enormously popular for blogs and full websites thanks to an awesome eco system which has built up around it, the simplicity (relatively) of getting it up and running plus the flexibility to “bend it” in all sorts of directions. With Dynamic SQL, one stored proc can do the work of many... Over the years, I have worked with a variety of different clients. It seems that every client has unique and different needs. In some situations, you may find that dynamic sql fills the void better than other solutions available to you. One scenario I have encountered in the past is one where the client wants the capability to run aggregate information at run time, but for any start month and number of time periods. There are many ways ...
I've spent what seems like weeks attempting to set up remote access for SQL Server 2008. Up to recently my database access was alway against a local instance but I now have two servers and I want to work from my local machine using databases on my remote server. I finally got it working. If you need to know how I've done a big page at: http://videotutors.net/SQLS... Check it out and let me know if you have any suggestions or questions ...
A few months ago, I found myself working with a repetitive cursor that looped until the data had been manipulated enough times that it was finally correct. The cursor was heavily dependent upon dates, every time requiring the earlier of two (or several) dates in one stored procedure, while requiring the later of two dates in another stored procedure. In short what I needed was a function that would allow me to perform the following evaluation: WHERE MAX(Date1, Date2) < @SomeDate The problem is, ...

Much data is unstructured, such as text documents, images, and videos. This unstructured data is often stored outside the database, separate from its structured data. This separation can cause data management complexities. Or, if the data is associated with structured storage, the file streaming capabilities and performance can be limited. FILESTREAM integrates the SQL Server Database Engine with an NTFS file system by storing varbinary(max) binary large object (BLOB) data as files on the file system. ...
I was thrilled to find a free ebook: Introducing Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2,by Ross Mistry and Stacia Misner The purpose in Introducing Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 is to point out both the new and the improved in the latest version of SQL Server. Great info and they are sharing it for free. Feel free to follow the authors and ask quesitons on Twitter. @RossMistry @StaciaMisner Here is the link to the book: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/mic... ...
short answer: Quite probably, as SQL Azure is very similar to SQL Server longer answer: Object Relational Mappers (ORMs) that work with SQL Server are likely but not guaranteed to work with SQL Azure. The differences between the RDBMS versions are small – but may cause problems, for example in tools used to create the mapping between objects and tables or in generated SQL from the ORM which expects “certain things” :-) More specifically: ADO.NET Entity Framework / LINQ to Entities can be used with ...
Diversify Your Database! Ever wanted a dbo.Split() function, but not had the time to debug it completely? Let me guess - you are probably working on a stored procedure with 50 or more parameters; two or three of them are parameters of differing types, while the other 47 or so all of the same type (id1, id2, id3, id4, id5...). Worse, you've found several other similar stored procedures with the ONLY DIFFERENCE being the number of like parameters taped to the end of the parameter list. If this is the ...
[Source: http://geekswithblogs.net/E... Recently I've been putting together a generic approach for paging the response from a WCF service. Paging changes the service signature, so it's not as simple as adding a behavior to an existing service in config, but the complexity of the paging is isolated in a generic base class. We're using the Entity Framework talking to SQL Server, so when we ask for a page using LINQ's .Take() method we get a nice efficient SQL query for just the rows we want, ...
So I’m taking a break from writing about other Agile stuff for a post. :) I’m still going to get back to the other subjects, but this is fun too. Something I’ve done quite a bit of is MSBuild and CI work. I’m experimenting with ways to improve what I’ve done in the past, particularly around database CI. Today, I developed a mechanism for starting from scratch with your database. By scratch, I mean blowing away the existing database and creating it again from a single command line call. I’m a firm ...

It’s been more than a month since SharePoint 2010 RTMed. And a lot of people have downloaded and set up their very own SharePoint 2010 development rigs. And quite a few people have written blogs about setting up good development environments, there is even an MSDN article on it. Two of the blogs worth noting are from MVPs Sahil Malik and Wictor Wilén. Make sure that you check these out as well. Part of the bad side-effects of being a geek is the need to do the technical stuff the best way possible ...
This question has come up several times recently as we take several hundred UK developers through 6 Weeks of Windows Azure training (sorry – we are full). Short answer: In the main, yes Longer answer: The question is sparked by the requirements as stated on the Windows Azure SDK download page. Namely: Supported Operating Systems: Windows 7; Windows Vista; Windows Vista 64-bit Editions Service Pack 1; Windows Vista Business; Windows Vista Business 64-bit edition; Windows Vista Enterprise; Windows ...

Recently participated in a conversation that asked about what thoughts were around the advantages of SharePoint 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2.

I guess we can really dive in by exploring a document on TechNet by the name of SQL Server 2008 R2 and SharePoint 2010 Products: Better Together (white paper)

I recently had to go through the process of migrating a TFS 2008 SP1 to a TFS 2010 environment. I will go into the details of the tasks that I went through, but first I want to explain why I define it as a migration and not an upgrade. When this environment was setup, based on support and limitations for TFS 2008, we used a 32 bit platform for the TFS Application Tier and Build Servers. The Data Tier, since we were installing SP1 for TFS 2008, was done as a 64 bit installation. We knew at that point ...
Concatenating output from a SELECT statement is a pretty basic thing to do in SQL. The main ways to perform this would be to use either the CONCAT() function, the || operator or the + operator. It really all depends on which version of SQL you are using. The following examples use T-SQL (MS SQL Server 2005) so it uses the + operator but other SQL versions have similar syntax. If you wanted to join two fields together for a full name: SELECT (lname + ', ' + fname) AS Name FROM tblCustomers To add ...
Over the last couple of days we have seen posts and “rumors” of the Beta availability. There was a link to the bits from the Download Center, but then they were not. As previously detailed, I have completed a single server installation of BizTalk Server 2009 standard on my development laptop; a MacBook Pro Core2Duo running at 2.16Ghz with 2Gb of RAM. Following this I also posted on my use of the BizTalk Server Best Practices Anaylser and how to configure the BizTalk SQL Server Jobs. All of which means that I should have some confidence that I have a decent working BizTalk Server 2009 environment, Next I thought that it would be a good idea to try and get some ...
Have you ever wanted to connect to the “Windows Internal” database that WSS V3 uses? While “Windows Internal Database” is Microsoft SQL Server 2005 in a limited edition (just like MSDE, WMSDE before it), the familiar access tools to the DB went missing, and connecting using standard ways doesn’t work either. It doesn’t work right out of the box. First, you need SQL Management Studio Express. Install and start it. Specify the following connection string: \\.\pipe\mssql$microsoft##s... Please ...
If you’re left scratching your head over SAP’s intention to acquire Sybase for almost $6 billion, you’re not alone. Despite Sybase’s 1990s reign as the supreme database standard in certain sectors (including Wall Street), the company’s flagship product has certainly fallen from grace. Why would SAP pay a greater than 50% premium over Sybase’s closing price on the day of the announcement just to acquire a relational database which is firmly stuck in maintenance mode? Well there’s more to Sybase than ...
For the installation I selected only the Team Foundation Server role. Then, I opened the Team Foundation Server Administration Console (which I think is a great addition and improvement over the way TFS was configured in the past) to proceed with the configuration of the pieces. Once I selected the Configure Installed Features, the Configuration Center opened up. Now, the choices … In my implementation here I just want to take advantage of Source Control primarily. I want to be able to store my code ...
Following the installation of Biztalk Server 2009 on my development laptop I used the BizTalk Server Best Practice Analyser which highlighted the fact that two of the SQL Server Agent jobs that BizTalk relies on were not running successfully. Upon investigation it turned out that these jobs needed to be configured before they would run successfully. To configure these jobs open SQL Server Management Studio, expand SQL Server Agent > Jobs and double click on the appropriate job. Select Steps and ...
The BizTalk Server Best Practices Analyser allows you to carry out a configuration level verification of your BizTalk installation, evaluating the deployed configuration but not modifying or tuning anything that it finds. The Best Practices Analyser uses "reading and reporting" to gather data from different sources, such as: Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) classes SQL Server databases Registry entries When I first ran the analyser I got a number of errors, if you get any errors these should ...
What is available to us through those links? Have you taken the time to explore and identify what could be useful to you? One of many gems that has come to my attention is the possibility of provisioning SQL Server to work in an image based environment (hint: Virtualization Template perhaps?!?). Planning: Includes requirements information, documentation, how to guides, online documentation installation and other tools. Among the other tools you will find the System Configuration checker and The Upgrade ...
At my previous employer, when developing for BizTalk Server 2004 using Visual Studio 2003, we made use of separate development and deployment environments; developing in Visual Studio on our client PCs and then deploying to a seperate shared BizTalk 2004 Server from there. This server was part of a multi-server Standard BizTalk environment comprising of separate BizTalk Server 2004 and SQL Server 2000 servers. This environment was implemented a number of years ago by an outside consulting company, ...
For a long time when creating images for my development environment, I had to install the OS and then sysprep. Only after that would I then create a differencing drive/image that would have SQL Server. So, the thought of having a base/core image for SQL Server as a template was not easily done. Well, how do things change? SQL Server 2008 R2 gives us the option now. Check this HOW TO provided on the library docs at TechNet. http://technet.microsoft.co... ...

Yesterday, Microsoft held its flagship launch event for Office 2010 in Manhattan. Today, the Redmond software company is holding a local launch event for Visual Studio (VS) 2010, in Brooklyn. How come information workers get the 212 treatment and developers are relegated to 718? Well, here’s the thing: the Brooklyn Marriott is actually a great place for an event, but you need some intimate knowledge of New York City to know that. NBC’s Studio 8H, where the Office launch was held yesterday (and from ...
Were I am contracting at right now has a new development domain. Because of IT security rules it is fairly isolated from the domain my computer normally logs into (for e-mail and such). I do use a VM to log directly into the domain but one of my co-workers found this command to run things on your box but in the other domain. Pretty cool. For example this runs SQL Server Management Tool for SQL Server 2008: runas /netonly /user:{domain}\{username} "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn\VSShe... ...
I’m going to write my history with Agile here. That way, in future posts, I can refer back to it, instead of typing it out in the post that contains information you may actually want to read. Note that I’m actually a pretty senior developer, and do lots of technical interviews. I’m an Agile fan because of the difference it makes in peoples lives and the improvement in quality it brings, and I’ll sacrifice my technological advance to help teams. Management History I started management pretty early ...
I’ve been working with a program Scribe, similar in function to SSIS although I’m still an SSIS fanboy!! The main feature my customer has Scribe for is to load data into Microsoft CRM 4.0. A lot of what I’ve been doing is loading campaigns into CRM which are staged in SQL Server but I need to mark each one as imported so it will not get imported again. The screen shot below shows how to setup the Source update. One important thing is that the source SQL table has to have a primary key defined (this ...
Just found this, if you’re using Azure 1.1, which you probably will be if yo'u’ve moved to Visual Studio 2010. In my previous example we talked about how to fetch data from database and how to populate the form with data using L2S. In this example I’m going to extend a little bit of what I have demonstrated in my previous example. Basically I’m going to show you the basic way on how to edit and delete data from the form and update the database using L2S technology. Since this is a continuation of my previous example so I would suggest you to refer that first before you go any further. STEP 1: Setting up the ...
Sometimes an application needs to have every last drop of performance it can get, others not so much. We’re in the process of converting some legacy Visual FoxPro data into SQL Server 2008 for an application and ran into a situation that required some performance tweaking. I figured the Making Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Fly session that Yavor Angelov (SQL Server Program Manager – Query Processing) presented at PDC 2009 last November would be a good place to start. I was right. One tip among the list ...
During the last year, we (Tellago) have been involved in various business intelligence initiatives that leverage some emerging BI techniques such as self-service BI or complex event processing (CEP). Specifically, in the last few months, we have partnered with Microsoft to deliver a series of events across the country where we present the different technologies of the SQL Server 2008 R2 BI stack such as PowerPivot, StreamInsight, Ad-Hoc Reporting and Master Data Services. As part of those events, ...
