This is an error message that we can find when we connect to SQL Server: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) Hmm… We sometimes spend for hours to fix this issue and In this brief tutorial, I will ...
I cut my DBA teeth on IBM's DB2 UDB EEE (enough acronyms) back in the 90's. I have always appreciated the scalability that is available with a MPP architecture. So a couple of years ago I was excited to hear that SQL Server was going to have a MPP architecture available. Now I am at SQLPass Summit 2011 and seeing the PDW (Parallel Data Warehouse) and the hardware offerings by Dell and HP to scale that up and out. However, I was disappointed to learn that this technology does not extend to Analysis ...
Hello Everyone, I thought I’d take a minute to update everyone on my upcoming talks and events that I will be attending. I have talks ranging from Kinect, Silverlight, HTML5 to OData! Wow, that’s a wide range of technology and I’m very passionate about everyone of them. Let’s get started. DevReach - October 17th through the 18th in Sofia, Bulgaria. I will not be speaking at this event only attending. I am very excited because this will be my first time visiting Bulgaria. I am looking forward to meeting ...
I got this error today while trying to access my new SharePoint 2010 environment via PowerShell: Cannot access the local farm. Verify that the local farm is properly configured, currently available, and that you have the appropriate permissions to access the database before trying again. If I would have just read the error message a little more carefully, I would have realized that I should start by looking at my permissions in SQL – which my account didn’t. This happened because I installed SQL ...
The SQL Server team or group of teams responsible for the learning content has done a fantastic job continually of providing great ways to work with their content. Full Disclosure: I was one of the technical reviewers on this book. I think my friend Tomislav did a great job on this book and it would make a valuable addition to the bookshelf of anyone that is working with MDX. I really enjoyed reading this and there were even a couple of interesting techniques that I have added to my toolkit. As far as I know there are not any other MDX books on the market quite like this one. It's more aimed at the intermediate level of MDX user and assumes that you have some ...

In SQL Server we know 3 kinds of temporary tables: Local Temp Tables, Global Temp Tables and Table Variables. In this blog I will try to explain the differences, and tell you how to use it. Local Temp Tables The local temp table is the most commonly used temp table. This temp tables is created with the following statement: CREATE TABLE #TempTable (ID INT IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, Description VARCHAR(10) NULL) The table that the script above created is a temporary table that is stored on disk. To be ...
Introduction To save on hosting costs and simplify maintenance, Software as a Service (SaaS) providers typically rely on schema separation to host multiple customers' records. This implementation relies on a specific SQL Server and SQL Azure feature called a schema object. A schema object behaves like a container, or a namespace in programmatic terms, allowing multiple tables (and other objects) to be stored with the same name in a single database. However schema separation comes with its own set ...

At http://www.sqlsharp.com/features/ there is a series of SQL CLR functions for SQL Server 2005 and later. The basic set can be downloaded for free! For $200, an additional 50+ functions are available.

The benefit of using them is well argued at http://www.simple-talk.com/content/article.aspx?article=1353

This example is not covered in the ESB Toolkit samples and I bumped my forehead a few times while making it work. I thought it’d be helpful to save other fellow BizTalk'ers from headaches by publishing findings. I have been fun of dynamic generic messaging for quite a while and went long ways to avoid working with typed messages and static bindings when it made sense. Nowadays, with the ESB Toolkit one does not have to spend much effort to achieve this goal. But one has to learn intricacies of configuration ...
In order to test Performance in SQL Server, normally you would take a look at how may I/O or how many cycles a statement takes to complete. To make it less complex, you can take a look at how long a statements takes, just by looking at the execution-time. In most cases, network latency, SQL Server hardware and workstation performance are also included in this result (time to create result set, and time needed to send across the internet or internal network). And if a statement takes les then a second ...

How fun is it to use new software? As a developer you always want to use the latest software, and in many cases it’s backwards compatible. This (unfortunately) isn’t the case with Report Builder 3.0 and SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services. This is a “by design” issue, but it’s such an annoying “feature”. If you try to deploy a Report built in RB 3.0, you will get the error: "The report definition is not valid. Details: The report definition has an invalid target namespace 'http://schemas.microsoft.c... ...
How often does it happen: you write an application that uses a SQL Database as source, and when you want to fetch data you get a time-out. Damn! But when you need to get a time-out (for example, if you want to test an exception), you don’t get one. In SQL Server you can create your own time-outs if you want. One of the simplest ways to generate a time-out, is to lock an object, and running a query against the object in another session. You can lock an object with a simple query: SELECT * FROM Company ...

Recently I was assigned a task of helping a developer to cope with an unusual input file processing. The file we needed to load into SQL Server had double quotes surrounding those fields that contained comma(s). So a short excerpt from it would resemble something like: 123,ABC 456,"D,E,F" "7,89",GHS Since SSIS’s Flat File Connection does not support alternating text qualifiers, the chief difficulty stems from the fact if we even only remove the quotes, the file structure becomes broken because the ...
One benefit of my recent experience on a BA flight was that I got plenty of time to read through “Microsoft BizTalk 2010 Line of Business Systems Integration”. I’d promised the publisher weeks ago that I would take a look and publish some comments, but August has been such a busy month for me, and they have had to be patient. I should point out that, for the sake of transparency, that with another BizTalk book about to be released (next week) which I helped co-author, I have an urgent and obvious ...
A few weeks ago I ran into an error while setting up our test farm. I was creating the service applications and when I got to PowerPivot, I got the following error: I was able to work around this error by using PowerShell to create the service application. Background First, some details of our installation: two web front ends, two application servers, and one SQL server. All are running Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 with Service Pack1. For the environment that does not have SCCM to monitor BizTalk server health, the following SQL query can be incorporate into a SQL job and have BizTalk server at least on a "constant" check. Note: be aware that the following was tested only against a single suspended instance with a send port. Since BizTalk SQL server does not allow select against the ServiceClass table, I couldn't use a single table join. With the data I currently have, I am not 100% sure the Receive Port, Pipeline, Orchestration ...

On SQL Server Central there is a very good article at http://www.sqlservercentral... on least priviledge access to a database. The only thing I can add to such an excellent article is that where there is a series of applications each with its own database on a common database server, there should never be a common account across all the databases that the applications use ...
Introduction By now, most of you have heard that Windows Phone 7 – Mango release will support Local Databases (SQL CE) using Linq to SQL. But what you probably haven’t heard much about is how to extract the .SDF that is created in isolated storage to your local computer and view the contents. I find this extremely important for debugging application and making sure my database is setup exactly like I want it. So, that is what we are going to do today. Getting Started with a sample application: For ...
To start, I love Red Gate Software’s Tools. I have loved them since the first time I started using SQL Backup and SQL Compare when I first started Geekswithblogs.net. I think they create quality products and have been a “Friend of Red Gate” for years. So know that this review is coming from a “fan boy” of sorts. What is SQL Compare? Well the name sort of says it all, this product compares SQL databases. But not just databases, but backups, snapshots, and source control using their product SQL Source ...
Recently I used Entity Framework 4.1 with Code First approach and step on a hidden rake. My application should create an SQL Server CE database file using supplied model classes. NHibernate has many ways to create and executes queries. With one of them* - the Named Queries we can execute our manually created stored procedures. This example is dedicated to SQL Server. This is important to notice, because this code is database specified. That means, for each database the query can look diffrent. E.g. in SQL Server we call the stored procedure by using the syntax: exec <procedure>. In Oracle it is: call <procedure>, so we must remember it. Let's assume we have a ...
I just wanted to return from sql server data as xml. This is very easy to do, because sql server has a build-in suppot for that. select Id, Name from Extensions FOR XML RAW('Extension'), ROOT('Extensions') But using this query, the returned column has name like XML_F52E2B61-18A1-11d1-B105... It's been some time when I manually created a sql query, so I lost few minutes to think, how to alias this column using the AS keyword. Correct query looks as follows select (select Id,Name from Extensions ...

The origin of the following is now lost in the mists of time but it bears repeating. A big party is being held to honor relational database systems & their impact on the modern society. Outside the venue, the host awaits the guests. The first limousine arrives and out steps Oracle followed by 4 people Host: Who have you brought along? Oracle: I have 4 DBA’s in tow. One to install me, one to design the databases, one to administer me and the other to justify the cost. A second limo arrives and ...
Recently i caught in a peculiar situation where i need to modify the check constraint expression to include more criteria to be validated through T-SQL. Although there is no declarative command or mechnism to modify the expression except dropping and recreating the check constraint. One exception is to use the Sql Management studio to modify it in design mode. But modifying using design mode was out of scope. The actual work was to alter or modify the defintion of a check constraint created with ...
Performing Composite Operations on Oracle Database is very similar to SQL Server Database. I just want to point out one mistake developers might easily make during the send port configuration. For any composite operation, the generated binding script doesn't include the composition operation tag in SOAP action header, therefore a new line needs to be manually added for each composite operation during the send port configuration. For WCF SQL Adapter, it looks like <Operation Name="CompositeOperationName" ...
Everyone has a journey. You start off young & stupid, and 2 decades later, you're closer to understanding the nature of reality. That’s one of the main goals in life, to seek knowledge (justified, true beliefs – pick any 2 J ). I must have read 5000 books in my life. From some of my readings it could be construed that reality computes itself, It from Bit. From others, it can be concluded that Entropy is decreased by increased rates of computation, and in the short span of human civilization, ...
No matter which ORM or data access technology you use, at some point you just need to do some CRUD, and you need to do it fast. In this post, I’m going to show you how to get your CRUD on with the latest version of Entity Framework in no time flat. In fact, I’d be surprised if the code to get your first CRUD operation done takes you more than a few minutes. The one thing the EF team did right with Code-First is make it really easy, but most of the “getting started” videos and documentation is packed ...
Today I wanted to count each unique element in a SQL Server table to make sure they were unique. Took a bit of playing but this finally works great: SELECT DISTINCT t.columntocheck, (Select COUNT(columntocheck) from tabletoserach where columntocheck = t.columntocheck) as countof FROM tabletoserach t This gives me back a list of all unique items in columntocheck and also counts the number of them. Of course, theres no where clause on this so be careful if you have a huge table. Mine was really small, ...

This morning I got the information that the Windows Azure Tools for Visual Studio 2010 - August 2011 Upgrade had been released. The version of this new upgrade is 1.4.40727.1601 with the Windows Azure SDK v1.4.20407.2049. This upgrade includes some awesome features that I was looking forward for a long time, which are: Profiling the application running in Windows Azure. New ASP.NET MVC 3 web role template. In our environment most of developers use SQL Server 2008,but in production we have SQL Server 2005, and some databases still have compatibility level 80(SQL server 2000) It sometimes causes problems E.g. the SQL wtitten on SQL Server 2008 INSERT INTO[dbo].[SiteIds] ([SiteID], [SiteCode],[ParentID]) VALUES (11,'ChildOfXX',(select [SiteID] from [SiteIds] where SiteCode='XX')) GO on SQL Server 2005 caused Msg 1046, Level 15, State 1, Line 5 Subqueries are not allowed in this context. I have a need for a highly responsive web page that must at least appear to be "pushed" information from the server as it happens, much like you'd see with an HTTP protocol based chat window. The client will utilize JavaScript, and will use JQuery and its UI plugins, and will use its AJAX support to call the requests that will only return when there is data to be "pushed". I know HTML 5 includes support for WebSockets, but I feel it is too soon to rely on them, as the spec is not yet finished and ...
In a number of talks I’ve given, including a session at last year’s Microsoft BI Conference, I’ve mentioned that if you’re not looking at partner offerings in the Microsoft Business Intelligence ecosystem, then you’re not getting the full Microsoft BI picture. This rubs two ways: Microsoft BI may look misleadingly deficient, in comparison to its competitors, if partner solutions are not taken into consideration If you’re an MS BI user and you’re not looking at partner products, your MS BI investment ...
MvcScaffolding is a tremendous productivity improvement for MVC developers. Earlier this year, Steve Sanderson posted the definitive 7-part series on MvcScaffolding which is a must-read for anyone serious about doing scaffolding. The best part about the scaffolding infrastructure is that MvcScaffolding is actually built on top of another package called T4Scaffolding. T4Scaffolding can be used as the basis for *any* scaffolding – not just MVC projects. To that end, we can enjoy the same power of MvcScaffolding ...

Today it will be a concise post, but I hope quite helpful and informative. As most SSIS developers know SSIS Expressions are used to drive several key tidbits of a package components as the Conditional Split, Package Variables value assignments, Derived Column Transformation, form a SQL statement for Execute SQL task, drive precedence constraints, set package properties as connection string for example and more. So it is hard to underestimate the importance of the SSIS Expressions for a SSIS developer. ...
In exploring the SQL Server site at microsoft.com, I came across the Learning Center option. It is a wealth of information to become familiar with the features and capabilities of the platform.
