I've begun work on a web-based game involving mostly a text interface (so far) involving some resource management, researching technology, unit design and combat...etc. All the things that support a pretty strenuous game engine yet is light on the interface. Should make for something fun, if a little tired. Leastways, that's my hope. It is going to be Rogue-like in one way: lots of serious stuff going on under the hood with little in the way of interface. I intend it to be an ongoing game played ...

I have decided to continue my article on the SQL Server 2008 RTM exploration update 3 in form of a new post. I am up and running with the SQL Server 2008 with no issues. The SQL Server Configuration Manager is a nice replacement for Surface Area Configuration and SQL Browser and it needs little attention. I spent literally 2 minutes just glancing at the settings. Nothing much to change. Among the new things are SSMS enhancements like the built in ability to debug T-SQL be it a stored procedure or ...
When trying to install the Adventure Works 2008 sample database on my new SQL Server 2008 instance I very quickly got a message box about the installation failing with an error of 2738. For some reason this sounded familiar and sure enough a quick search turned up this post from Mitch (see: The error code is 2738) where he had the same error (with a different installer). It appears to be the same issue as the same fix worked for me and now I am up and running with the new sample database. Technorati ...
I am pleased to announce that the BIDS Helper team have just released v1.3 which is our first release with support for SQL Server 2008. With these release we have also improved our international support. All of the features in BIDS Helper still only display in English in their user interfaces. But in previous versions, some of the features of would not work at all in non-English versions of BIDS because of the way we were integrating into BIDS. This has now been fixed and all of the features of BIDS ...

Problem. I have been wondering how i can use the set theory to determine the which items form a subset of another in oracle. I wanted to deduct a regimen of drugs from a prescription and what i had to do was to loop through all regimens and find out which one exists in the current prescription. A regimen is a combination of drugs and how they are administered. e.g. to treat Tubercolosis the doctor may prescribe a regimen called (RHE 150/75/275) which is composed of Rifampicin 150 mg/Isoniazid 75 ...
Emil Stoychev on async data, Bart Czernicki on VS and SLTools updates, Denislav Savkov with Part 2 of his weather control, Bill Reiss on Fiddler and SL vs Flash, Page Brooks with a Gauge Control and Polling Control, Matt Berseth with angled DataGrid column headers, and Alex Knight with a Splash screen. I feel like a wedding planner with this one... something old, something new :) ... of course the old ones are only a few days, leftover from while I was gone. I have one more set of those unless I ...
Very Quick Note: Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 was released finally (in combination with .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 of course). To sum up for some people, note that VS 2008 SP1 includes ADO.NET Entity framework (and its designer) as well as ADO.NET Data Services, but NOT ASP.NEt MVC framework (but does include ASP.NET Dynamic Data & ASP.NET AJAX history control and script combining). It also includes some WCF enhancements as well as major VS performance and scalability fixes. ISO Donwload ...
The download for VS.NET 2008 SP1 is available now: http://msdn.microsoft.com/e... This should fix the issue with running BIDS for SQL Server 2008 and VS.NET 2008. I'm downloading just downloaded it - it's tiny at about 500Kb, I hope it's not one of those "web install" stubs as I am going to be disconnected for most of the day and It's going to be frustrating if the SP stops installing part way through. Update: As I suspected, the tiny file was just a web download, there is ...
Hello everyone, With SQL 2008 shipping late last week it was time to try my hands at this scenario. It worked great but with a few things to remember. Here is the lowdown. There are two way to go about in order to install TFS with SQL 2008 1) Fresh install, 2) Upgrade SQL. 1) Fresh Install I used Windows 2008 because this is going to be the prevalent OS to install on when people are going to start fresh or it most likely will. There was a little issue with that install when Windows 2008 RTM’ed back ...

Now that I have a new main machine, I am left with an extra desktop with which I do whatever I want. It currently is running Vista, but I was thinking it might be kinda fun to install Linux on it and try to make it talk to my existing home network, or set it up as it's own server and use my other laptop as a client...just for the experience of doing so. I realize there's no real practical purpose to it other than for fun. I have another machine that is living as my SQL Server (mostly for SourceGear ...
For those of use with MSDN or Technet subscriptions, SQL Server 2008 is available for download now and you have probably heard this from multiple sources already. (is there an echo in here?) But for anyone that wants to work with the BI tools and who already has VS.NET 2008 installed you will need to wait until VS.NET 2008 SP1 is released (see http://support.microsoft.co... which will hopefully only be a few days. This is because BIDS in 2008 is based on the VS.NET 2008 SP1 build. If you ...

I recently ran into an interesting problem. I had created a data access method that used generic typing to execute a scalar SQL Server stored procedure (below), and in the stored procedure was returning SCOPE_IDENTITY() for an integer identity column. I was passing in a type of "int" to the method (as <T>) since that's what I was expecting back, but I kept getting back null. After some frustration and bewilderment I discovered that SCOPE_IDENTITY() always returns a decimal, and C# doesn't want ...
Recently a project leadership team I was assisting had the difficult task of selecting between implementation technologies for a distributed architecture. We had brainstormed a list of candidates, and after some investigation were able to enumerate their strengths and weaknesses well enough. But then the decision-making process started to come unhinged as we thrashed about, weighing the various options. How do you narrow the field to a winner, anyway? When I was able to frame the process in terms ...

I think this SQL Server x.x oddity goes back to the old Sybase 4 days! If you want to use a database name that's been dubbed something like 'paula-objects' and type out: use paula-objects then execute the request, you'll get the error message: Incorrect syntax near '-' just type this instead: use [paula-objects] when you execute the request, the syntax error will clear up ...
Yes! For those Oracle X.Xers finding themselves working in the SQL Server 2005/2008 world these days, you'll be happy to know all you need to do is: 1. Open up a new execute query window. 2. Type the following: use FavoriteDbInstance SELECT table_name,column_name FROM information_schema.columns WHERE column_name LIKE '%whateverYouWant%' That's it!:-) Your table names with the column name you are searching for should show up ...
The short answer is, you can't... at least not directly. ClickOnce is designed to be a noninvasive deployment technology, which is a fancy way of saying it won't let you stick files just anywhere you like. It also won't let you specify an install path, or muck about in the registry, etc. So what do you do if you need to install a font as part of a ClickOnce deployment? Anytime your ClickOnce application has a prerequisite, like .NET 3.5 or SQL Server CE for example, you need a bootstrapper. (These ...

I had a comment recently on one of my older posts (which was about processing a cube with XMLA) asking how I scripted out the process command from SQL Server Management Studio. It is much easier to explain this with pictures than with words alone, hence this post. If you right click on an object in the object browser in management studio and click on the process option you will get a dialog box like the one below. This dialog has a "Script" button at the top, like many of the dialogs in Management ...
One of my colleagues tried to work with a new database from DevServer and got an error "Login failed for user". We checked everything related to security and permissions, but it didn't help. After a while we recognize that there was spelling mistake in the name of the database in connection string. In this case "Login failed for user" error actually meant "database name is invalid" Why it wasn't shown as a reason in plain English? Other possible reason for the errors are described in multiple articles, ...
Man, this issue has been kicking my butt all day. We've been working on a SharePoint 2003 upgrade (testing) and got to the final content database. Life was good up to this point. 110GB of content had upgraded and there were just a few hiccups, mostly related to size. Then, it came. The nasty, evil, dispicable: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. Over and Over... Basically what's happening from what we can tell is SQL Server ...
This may be old news, but we just hit this issue the other day.  If you try to upgrade an instance of SharePoint Portal Server 2003 or WSS 2.0 that is running on a named instance of SQL Server called "SharePoint", the gradual upgrade option is greyed out.  It turns out that this is because the installer thinks that you are trying to upgrade an instance of MSDE.  Changing the instance name to something other than "SharePoint" does the trick.  Talk about hardcoding something...

Although I was more-or-less lambasted for my post about free vs. open source software, I want to follow-up with a comment or two about .NET development. There is a common misconception that developing for Windows using .NET is an expensive endeavor. For the record, .NET development is free. .NET Framework SDK The .NET framework itself (a.k.a. runtime) is completely free. In fact, if you don't have it, go and download it right now. Check out "Get the Framework" on the right. http://msdn.microsoft.com/e... ...

Processing a large amount of data from SQL server in .NET applications can be challenging some times. A common concern that people have is it just takes too much time to get the data from SQL. Waiting for the entire result set to return and then handling it require a great amount of RAM usage. That's not the worst thing yet. Imagine how frustrated your users can get when they have to wait for minutes after they click a button. A better designed application should utilize the asynchronous pattern ...
I have decided to start a blog, I plan on posting solutions & tips for other developers to use in all things .NET and also post any other interesting facts and activities that I feel would be of importance to others. I also hope that readers of this blog may be able to help with providing answers to my questions too. Anyway, I am currently working on 2 projects over on Code Plex (there is a 3rd in the pipeline-that uses these 2 libraries): www.codeplex.com/DotNetLibrary The Dot Net Library contains ...

I had an interesting issue with Visual Studio recently. I installed the SQL Server 2005 Management studio before I installed Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite. Once I installed Visual Studio, I had nothing under the VB or C# Project Types when I created a new project (File | New Project). The fix to this issue is very simple. Close Visual Studio. Go to the Visual Studio 2005 Command Prompt. Type devenv.exe /installvstemplate. Problem Solved! Happy Coding ...
improve my => 'code' Even if your databases are from prior versions of SQL Server, you should download the new CTP for SQL Server 2008. https://connect.microsoft.c... The new version's SQL Server Management Studio will connect to older versions of SQL Server databases and give you intellisense (almost as good as Red Gate's Sql Prompt!). Hope this saves you some time, Jonathan ...
As I've been helping out with VMware I wanted to consider the old question of whether developers really could work inside virtual environments? As we know virtual environments can help maximise under utilised resources, CPU, RAM, diskspace and save on space, power, HVAC and TCO with centralised support and maintenance. Another main advantage of virtualised environments that is particularly attract to many developers is the ability to remote work which is a requirement that has become far more common ...
Since Windows XP Service Pack 2, there's been a buddy living in the system called Http.sys. IIS and SQL Server both interact with this kernel-mode HTTP listener to receive and response to HTTP requests. Within the .NET framework, you can build your own application to interact with HTTP requests using the HttpListener class, which is simply managed code built over the Http.sys API. The code to work with the HttpListener class is quite simple, as illustrated with this example: System.Net.HttpListener ...
Microsoft last week rolled out the first Release Candidate of SQL Server 2008. The RC0 bits are available for public download here. I have been playing with SQL 2008 RC0 for a few days already, and I would like to share my experience in this quick blog post. First of all, I have to warn you that my RC0 installation experience was not pleasant at all. If you are an early adopter of new releases like me, you will very likely run into the same troubles I had. Previous CTP releases of SQL Server 2008 ...
I took the plunge. I have had the bits for 2008 for a little while and I finally decided to set it up for my TFS environment. Windows Server 2003 is so last year! My buddy ET blogged a few weeks ago on installing TFS on Windows 2008 32 bit. I used his post as a guide, but added a little more detail to some of his steps and updated the overall process for 64 bit. Sadly, the TFS App tier does not run on 64bit Windows and no amount of begging by me would get the product team to send me a patch. *sigh* ...
I've turned my hand to a bit of Infrastructure Architecture and lending a hand working out what physical servers would make good candidates for making the transition to virtual. IBM, HP and DELL, to name afew, all offer services to work out what would make good candidates for you. There is also tools that can also help such as the popular PlateSpin's PowerRecon but to be fair these methods only really give potential technical candidates, that’s half the story! What about the business perspective? ...
