[Source: http://geekswithblogs.net/E... At the SBUG meeting last week, my session on "ESB Guidance: A Real-World Implementation" was meant to end with a demonstration, but we ran out of time - and in any case what I'd intended to show was probably a bit ambitious, with plenty of this-is-bound-to-go-wrong points. But I've spent some time making it more solid and the code is available now on MSDN Code Gallery: ESB Guidance 1.0 Demonstration: TriathlonResults, if you want to have a look. You'll ...
After many long hours working on upgrading our clients intranet from SPS 2003 to MOSS, we completed the rollout over a very long weekend. Ed Buhain, the client and I spent a fair bit of time babysitting the process, tackling last minute gotchas as they came up. One of the final issues we had was after all of the time testing, debugging, prepping, etc we had not run through the upgrade process with the infrastructure update applied. I was fully prepared to do my workarounds in order to get all the ...

GridViews and SharePoint Programming for SharePoint poses some challenges to the .NET developer. Of course first you should be familiar with .NET, I will be using c# in my examples here. One of the main development paths for SharePoint is to create modular functionality in Web Parts. Web Parts are great little chunks of a web page that you can cram anything you can think of into; however you won’t have the nice visual tools you are used to working with. For a simple “Hello World” type application ...
Last Updated: 10/17/08 I'm working in a test WSS 3.0 environment and I would like to be able to move a subsite with subsites to another environment. There are several ways to move a WSS 3.0 site. The first one I tried almost worked. I will document my attempts (and reason each attempt was or was not successful here. After setting up my Dell PowerEdge 2900 with Windows Server 2008 x64 and Hyper-V, I began the steps of creating virtual environments for things I work on. I already had a virtual SQL Server 2005 which was underutilized - 768 MB allocated RAM and one processor for my various development projects. I wanted to set up Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) as a "mostly" single server install with the exception that I wanted to use the existing SQL Server 2005 installation instead of the embedded SQL ...

For the next few weeks I'm going to be turning my attentions to Microsoft SQL Server as the new version, 2008 is now with us and even has it's first big patch CU1. I am however not going to focus on coding as plenty of others on GWB have that sufficiently covered. It is fair to say that SQL Server has turned into a monster, it's far more than just a database product these days, it is a complete data management suit of tools. Some of the tools are fully fledged complex products in their own right ...
Windows Vista: Pros and Cons I just bought a laptop which has Windows Vista. Since I wasn’t sure if it’s feasible to keep it with this Operating System, I researched to see the advantages and disadvantages of Vista. Here is what I gathered out of personal use and research What I love about Windows Vista: · The increased security, although you can also get this by having Service Pack 3 on Windows XP · The new looks, which in my opinion are way better than those of Windows XP · The side bar is a nice ...

Recently I was discussing SQL Server encryption with some friends who have been using it to encrypt short strings such as Social Security numbers at their shop. I commented, "Just try searching those Social Security Numbers," they shared my lamentation, and we moved on to other subjects. Later that evening, though, I thought there must be a way to search those wretched encrypted blocks--somehow--and worked out the solution you are about to read. The Problem The difficulty lies in the fact that you ...

Here we are at the second week's task for the Manhattan Project: switching the user's database to MSSQL instead of SQLite. I'll be honest, there weren't any valuable resources I found for assistance in the creation of this tutorial. Mostly it was a combination of Try / Fail and guessing based on what I saw in the code for the MSSQL dll in the project. I might say that there weren't resources, but what I mostly mean is no tutorial. There are some .sql files to help get the database started, but that's ...

Last year I logged an issue on the connect site around deploying from BIDS and renamed databases. https://connect.microsoft.c... I got a couple of messages relating to this issue, one saying that it was being closed as it was a duplicate issue and then another one recently where it was updated to indicate that the issue has been fixed in SQL Server 2008. I think it is really great to get this sort of feedback that something is being done, unfortunately ...

On an other blog I found some interesting analysers like: SQL Server 2005 Best Practices Analyzer The SQL Server 2005 Best Practices Analyzer (BPA) gathers data from Microsoft Windows and SQL Server configuration settings. BPA uses a predefined list of SQL Server 2005 recommendations and best practices to determine if there are potential issues in the database environment. Best Practice Analyzer for ASP.NET The Best Practice Analyzer ASP.NET (alpha release) is a tool that scans the configuration ...
I found another oddity that seems to be undocumented today. This one in SQL Server 2005. Apparently, you cannot start objects (at least stored procedures) with the word "Log". I have a table called ShipNoticeLog and a stored procedure called LogShipNotice. The table is the noun and the stored procedure is the action -- this is how I prefer to do the naming. My code quickly failed with the message, "Invalid object name 'LogShipNotice'..." I ended up solving my issue by renaming the stored procedure ...

On Friday I passed the “70-503 - TS: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 – Windows Communication Foundation Application Development”, so that makes me a “Technology Specialist” in WCF. This is the third technology specialist (TS) exam I have taken, the others being BizTalk Server 2004, and BizTalk Server 2006, so it felt good to broaden the spectrum a bit. I prefer the TS exams to the regular .net exams; I have the MCSD certification, which required passing four .net exams and a server product exam (I chose ...

Introduction This blog entry which is more like an article, will demonstrate how easily you can design occasionally connected applications using ADO .Net Sync services. It’s going to be a very basic example in VB .net showing how easily you can use Sync services within your application. I have taken the template from code project and will try to upload it there as well. I am also uploading my presentation in case anyone needs it. Presentation and Source code Background At our organization we have ...

Some time ago I got very strange situation on my development SQL Server 2005. Immediately after starting the process it went up to 100% CPU and stayed there for hours. There were no external connections, and I couldn't figure out what was causing this so I asked for help our best SQL geek Pawel Potasinski. With his help we were able to figure out that this was caused by service broker running on one of the databases although we didn't find the root cause for this. Fast forward few months, and last ...

Still in mostly design mode here, but I have started building a database for the data. I am actually trying to separate the db design from the object design/coding by a short period of time (days? week?) to hopefully allow me to design the object model without the db structure in mind. If I am too close to the db, I'll never achieve this. Anyway, the db is coming along, and I am building some basic CRUD procs that I will need. All that is coming along smoothly so far...it should it's honestly the ...

The following error occured when 2 requests hit an ASP.NET (2.0) web app (using SQL Server 2005) at the same time: The connection was not closed. The connection's current state is open Normally this only occurs if you have a connection that is not being closed. However in our case all connections where being closed using a try-finally block (personally I prefer using a using block). This error only occured when the 2 request were initiated from different machines. It turns out that the error occured ...

I recently went to check the configuration of my SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services instance (which is a named instance called "SQL08") and it came up with a "connect" dialog and when I clicked on the "find" button I got an "invalid namespace" error. I found a few threads on the MSDN forums about this and eventually a Microsoft guy came up with a solution. The post at the end of this thread http://forums.microsoft.com... had the solution which worked for ...
For one of my projects I need to have Business News headlines displayed on the front page, to give me greater control as to which headlines and from which feeds I use I'm going to have the aggregator call each feed and store the article details in a SQL database. Schemas I'm going to use schemas in designing my database. The use of these changed in SQL 2005 so that each one is a distinct namespace, independent of the user who created it. This will allow me to group related tables together, but it ...
This is one of common questions that I get during my presentations/conferences. We see MS with OS, Office line of products, Server/middleware products, designer products, games, etc. In addition to that, MS is also competing with enterprise like Google and Oracle on multiple avenues. At high level, it looks amazing to me. Anyone would agree that having developed and delivered these kind-of stack of products is itself an achievement. And delivering world class products and competing with market leaders ...
I'll start this blog by posting something that bothered me for months until I found out that it was laaaazzzy stored procedure code. Have you ever looked at your SSIS packages in SSMS 2005 when connected to Integration Services only to find out that they are not in alphabetical order? How about when you are selecting a package from SQL Server when setting up a job in SQL Agent? It would help if the packages were ACTUALLY IN ORDER right? To fix this tomfoolery, go to the [msdb].[dbo].[sp_dts_listpa... ...

Sorry this is a little late. Two important things about the GDR for Data Dude. 1. No more design-time databases. 2. There is now a provider model for databases. This is how they will support DB2 when then GDR is released and how they will also support Oracle in the near future. From Gert Drapers: The team is happy to announce that we just released CTP16, of the Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition GDR release. ... This release adds the following features: VSDBCMD.EXE We added independent ...
Go to the ms sql server database instance that has the table object and open a new query window. Execute the system stored proc called sp_changeobjectowner. The 2 parameters it needs to run are: (1) the current owner+object name and (2) the target owner. Take a look at the example below: exec sp_changeobjectowner 'METRO\paula.EmployeeContact', 'dbo' When the stored proc is completed, refresh the instance. The table will then be owned by dbo. In this example, the table would display as dbo.EmployeeContact ...
