Servers are the backbone of enterprise computing today, most websites for example run on either Apache or IIS and will be running on a server of some description. Perhaps because of servers ubiquity it is easy to become complacent about them especially as they are rarely seen but understanding what a server can offer you and it's limitations will definitely help with software development. Servers on the whole are built more of the practicality side than for the esthetics, there is no need to make ...
We have finally released a K2 [blackpearl] Book called "Professional K2 blackpearl". I will be getting the book at some point so I will definitely do another post. Previous experience has shown me that these "Professional [product]" books tend to be quite good (having gone through "Professional SQL Server 2005" and "Professional SQL Server Integration Services") - so I am looking forward to it.
Today I had to work on a project which uses VS2008 and SQL Server 2008. I haven't used SQL2008 but had used VS2008 a little bit. When I tried to install SQL2008 (Developer edition) got this strange error which says "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 installation has failed. SQL 2008 Setup requires .NET 3.5 to be installed." Strange thing is I had installed .NET 3.5 in the VPC upfront. Actually you are installing .NET 3.5 when you install VS2008 right? Anyway I tried to resolve this using, 1. Uninstall ...
For 12 of my years in Microsoft I worked with Independent Software Vendors (ISVs). ISVs get their own site, http://www.isvinnovation.com/ which from time to time contains some great online webcasts. If you are a developer and you are new to Azure Services Platform, then there are five great Webcasts to take a look at. Part: 1 Azure Services for Developers: Fundamentals Part: 2 Azure Services for Developers: Developing a Windows Azure Application Part: 3 Azure Services for Developers: .NET Services ...
If WSS is free then what are the limitations? There is nothing good that is completely free, right? According to what I have found, if you setup WSS using SQL Server Embedded Edition (on the same server and not Express), then there is not a size limit. You have to setup WSS with the Basic option in order for it to install SQL Server EE (not Express); otherwise Express is installed and there is a 4 GB limit. Some are saying 500 GB may be a size constraint with EE, but I am not sure. SQL Server EE ...
While http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... outlines some limitations of SQL Server Express, there are some specifics that are missing for Reporting Services. One such example is what I discovered today while at a client that uses DB2 for its RDBMS. SSRS that comes with the Express Edition only supports creating reports against the local SQL Server data source. Be aware of this when considering SQL Server Express in your system design. http://www.microsoft.com/te... ...
Running Windows Vista 64 bit, Sql Server 2008 on a remote server. Using ASP.Net and the Report Viewer control on an asp.net page for a local report. Was also using IIS to host the web site instead of using the web server built into Visual Studio 2008. Searched and tried everything I could find on the net trying to fix this freaking error. On a whim (and because I didn't know what else to do and was trying everything I could think of) changed the IIS 7.0 app pool to the classic app pool. Angels came ...

I created my first technology blog back in July 2004 over on http://blogs.msdn.com/ericnel when I was an Application Architect inside Microsoft UK. At the time I had been with Microsoft 8 years, I was very focused on early adoption work with SQL Server 2005 and was looking for a broader way to help developers in the UK. A blog seemed to be a great way of doing this and I used it to share my learnings, thoughts, advice, best finds etc. throughout the beta of SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio 2005. ...
The Microsoft Web Platform Installer is now v1.0. I came across this the other day. I recently converted a .NET 1.1 project to .NET 2.0 using VS 2008 and during development testing a collegue had complained that he had been getting errors updating columns in a DataSet. The error was that the column was ReadOnly, so therefore could not update it. I eventually tracked it down to the data coming from SQL Server 2000 database, some of the fields where not directly coming from columns in the database. Some where results from functions like IsNull and ...

OK, so I haven't been the best blogger. You know how it goes - you start working on a project and it consumes all your time. Then you start on another project, then another, and so on. The good news is that I was doing some very interesting work and have lots to share here. To give you an idea of what's to come, here are some of the topics I've been working on: BizTalk, MOSS, WCF, and WF - all together in a series of Hands-on-Labs soon to be available from Microsoft BAM For Developers - a series ...

If you have presented at a past Roanoke Code Camp -- welcome back! Our past reviews tell us we want you back. If you've never presented at a RCC, welcome! We will be having 4-5 tracks this year with topics including .NET anything and everything, SQL Server and SharePoint. If you would like to present this year please submit the following ...
Florida has a very active developer community. The biggest problem we seem to have is that all of these different groups usually don't know about each and there hasn't been a "centralized clearinghouse" listing all of the technical communities. Joe Healy, one of our Florida Microsoft Developer Evangelists, maintains a list and earlier this year started putting together one-page flyers for each of the main areas in Florida. I think the eventual plan is that Joe will be updating his site to take advantage ...
I have a great pleasure to invite you to two community driven conferences that are organized in Poland: 4Developers, 7th March, Kraków 4Developers is a first “hybrid” conference organized in Kraków, combining different programming languages (C#, Java, PHP, Ruby), as well as project management and database topics. It is planned for 700 attendees who can participate in 4 parallel tracks. Java – the track will be opened by Neal Ford and Adam Bien .NET & C# – everything one must know about Microsoft ...
A fellow peer was looking at an error when trying to configure another developer's database. All of us are working on the same application, but our install doesn't seem to be working correctly, which causes the DB to not be properly installed, thus this guy is trying to configure it manually. We are using SQL 2005 (either Express or the regular versions) for our DB servers. He's using SQL Management Studio, logged in using Windows Authentication and was trying to bulk insert some records (BULK INSERT ...
I had a task yo import data from Excel spreadsheet to SQL Server table. Last time I tried to use SQL Server Management Studio import option, but it gave me some not clear errors, that I didn't understand. So I've created SSIS project in VS and was able to narrow down the errors and import the data. This time for similar spreadsheet I had some errors again. The output contained the warnings about length of the string column, that usually can be ignored, e.g.: Warning: 0x802092A7 at First Task, Destination ...
SQL server high availability comes in 2 basic categories. 1) Clustering using a SAN drive and multiple physical servers attached to the disk storage 2) Stand alone equipment acting in parallel A SAN configuration is an expensive solution; typically a disk storage array needs to be purchased with high speed communication channels (typically fibre). Therefore #2 is often the recommended configuration for smaller shops and less critical databases. Awareness of this topic is important for developers ...
How to download multiple images (/files) from SQL Server to client using ASP.NET and DotNetZip? Here is a simple way you can use to let your web site users download multiple images or files at once. For this article, I will be focused on images but the same technique can be used for downloading files also. I will be describing how to zip all the images in a folder and send the zipped file to the client. In my case, the images were stored in SQL Server as binary data so I had to come up with a process ...
Lately I've had a few people approach me after speaking engagements or conferences and ask for some advice on becoming a .NET developer. Sometimes this has been moving into IT from an unrelated field or other times it's just been a transition of existing development skills into .NET. Now if you have been in this industry for awhile (and had any success) you have apparently demonstrated at least some capability to migrate your skills from one newly released technology to the next. In 2009 it's hard ...
Previous Posts: Part 0 of 4: Introduction Part 1 of 4: Testing the Service Part 2 of 4: Testing the Client Part 3 of 4: Testing the Asynchronous Client Functional Testing the WCF Application In functional testing, the goal is to test as much of the application that you can to determine that it does what you want from a functional perspective. It differs greatly from unit testing in that a unit test is only concerned with an individual class. Functional tests are concerned with testing the interactions ...
SharePoint uses service accounts to run specific services behind the scenes. SharePoint does not function under the practice of “running everything as administrator”. There are several documents regarding all of the different service accounts that are recommended for SharePoint, but for some organizations the sheer number of accounts is simply not manageable. So I’ve put together a list of what I would consider the minimum accounts (and rights) for a typical SharePoint installation. The account you ...

For 2009, I've resolved to start participating and giving back to the technical Internet community. For years I've been searching (even before Google - gasp) for technical info online, and selfishly (or mercifully, depending on your point of view) withholding the bits I have to offer. As a brief introduction to me, I am one of those multi-hat types. Depending on the job, I spend anywhere from 30-70% of my time doing hands-on technical work (including coding, but also configuring all the knobs and ...
Article Source: http://geekswithblogs.net/m... I've recently been looking at a proof of concept of implementing the resequencer pattern in BizTalk 2009. When I've implemented this pattern in the past it usually required a lot of custom development to create a database to support the resequencing process. If you would like to see more on the theory of the resequencer pattern then refer to the following link: http://www.eaipatterns.com/... I've seen a few .net and BizTalk ...
Does your software or database run like a dog? Running out of space? Or doesn't recover well in a disaster? ... then your storage configuration may be one of the reasons. This is a short little post just to give you a heads-up on the basics. You may know bits of it already, hence why I have broken it up into a Q&A format so you can skip what you already now. The Hard-Disk Well we've all seen a hard-disk but the likelihood is that it was in a desktop and you're the only person that uses it at ...
SQL Server 2008 PowerShell Cmdlets + /n software PowerShell Server v2 = Execute SQL Queries Anywhere. If you don’t already have the SQL cmdlets for PowerShell, you’ll need to download and install SQL Server 2008. A warning for those of you running on x64 machines - you’ll have to export the SQL Server keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE... For the past ten months, I have been waiting and waiting sometimes patiently and sometimes not so patient for the DreamSpark program to be available to high school students. Back in February with a huge announcement by Bill Gates about the DreamSpark program, I have been waiting. So here's the program: The Microsoft DreamSpark student program www.DreamSpark.com makes available, at no charge, a broad range of development and design software for download. The program is now available to more than 35 ...
A while back I discussed the approach we use on some projects to configuration management and how we solve the problem of configuring binding and configuration (and any other) files for different environments. I had originally written the linked article on my blog. While it was fairly successful the main project I've been working on has a number of BizTalk projects within it and I felt that the configuration dictionary approach we were using was becoming a bit of a pain as the XML dictionaries were ...
I've been meaning to post this for a while. Hopefully this helps you as much as it helped me. A great source for learning the BDC is Sahil Mali blog at: http://blah.winsmarts.com/2... Sahil does a phenomenal job of walking you through a database app definition example. Sahil's solution uses pass-through authentication. However, the SingleSignOn approach gives you a powerful alternative that can also take advantage of SQL Server connection pooling. ...
When you create a database i'm sure you can grant users/roles access to stored procedures tables etc.. But if you inherit the sql database then you will need to find a solutionThanks to Jeremy Kadlec from sql tips Unfortunately, with all of the security changes in SQL Server 2005, no default role is available to execute all stored procedures in a given database.Quite sure the same applies to SQL SERVER 2000. But there is a solution looking at the script below: Just pass in the loginname below to ...
In my current company, we have a fairly good DR story with our “Global” (UK based) BizTalk platform and it’s something that is regularly tested (successfully I might add :) ). We also have a smaller BizTalk deployment in the US which follows a different model but which was also proven successful this year for the first time. More on that in a bit. The choice of DR model you adopt for BizTalk will depend on a number of factors: Criticality – how important is the information flowing through or orchestrated ...
When you click the print button from the ReportViewer control (Sql Server 2005)you get the error: Unable to load client print control I never had this issue with ReportViewer control (Sql Server 2000). After doing some research it came out that there were many solutions to this depending on your environment. 1) Installing the RSClientPrint.Cab which can be found in the program Files\MSSQL Server\Reporting Services\ReportSerer\bin\.. folder. But with this you would have to deploy this cab to all the ...
[Source: http://geekswithblogs.net/E... The first public beta of BizTalk Server 2009 was released yesterday, and fulfils expectations by falling in line with the 2008 server and development stack, and offering a few functional extras. I've had a quick run through of it and made some initial notes below. The MSBuild integration is interesting although I haven't got a good grasp yet on whether it will replace custom MSBuild tasks to aid deployment; apparently it works nicely with TFS, but ...
Recently I started diving into WiX (Windows Installer XML) as a toolset for a setup project I needed to create. And it didn't take much time to discover that WiX provides some nice out of the box dialogs without having to do much work. That is, if you only need the basic configurations, such as a folder browse dialog and a license agreement. However, my project required just that little extra dialog, to provide the location of a SQL database. Basically, what I needed was two textboxes, one to input ...
Good news ... On Monday December 8th, 2008 Microsoft announced Public beta of BizTalk Server 2009 (https://connect.microsoft.... What’s new in BizTalk Server 2009? I have just started setting up a BizTalk 2009 machine to start looking at the CTP and something I noticed in the installation guide kind of supported what I was saying the other day about BAM being misplaced. We knew that SSNS was not part of SQL 2008, and as BizTalk documentation is saying use the old SQL 2005 component if you want BAM Alerts (see below). I believe the roadmap for the features which SSNS provided are intended to eventually end up in SQL Reporting Services so this would seem to support ...
Hosting Your Own Websites For years now I’ve been building our company websites on external hosting systems. The problem has always been that I have limited control over the hosting environment. During the past year my host has been webhost4life and they do a good job of providing services including DotNetNuke but my desire to host multiple websites made hosting in-house more and more attractive. I’ve accumulated 18 domain names from Network Solutions over the years and I really wanted to build sites ...
God...It's been one year since I started neglecting this blog. I must post something. Is there any point to wait for making a blog entry until you really invent something new? Then I may not make any post at all . This is a small tip which might be usefull for someone. I haven't tested the originality of this topic but this is the thing on which I wasted some of my time on a precious sunday. I was just trying to load some excel files to their corresponding SQL Server database. Data entry? no way!. ...
Our TechFuse 2008 Conference on February 26, 2008 drew in over 425 people for a one day conference, focusing on Microsoft Technologies. Featured tracks in 2008 included SQL Server 2008, System Center, Visual Studio 2008, SharePoint 2007 and more. TechFuse 2009 Conference is going to be held on March 17, 2009 (you bet, the luck of the Irish!) at the Northland Inn in Brooklyn Center. We have selected our tracks (with feedback from our internal instructors and our students) and they are: Virtualization ...

I've been struggling through a Team Foundation Server 2008 install with Sql Server 2008 over the weekend. It seems to be having an especially hard time with the SQL Server Reporting Services. After analyzing a few things, I determined that the configuration tool was having an issue due to some prior installations of software. The report urls were pointing to a SQL Express directory. I went about setting up the virtual directories manually. This required setting up an application pool, and I assigned ...
There is plenty of documentation on how to install and configure SharePoint. For the novice SharePoint user there are step-by-step guides, and for the more experienced user there are checklists. During all of these instructions there is very little emphasis on the proper use of Service Accounts used to install and configure SharePoint. It is, by far, one of the ways that you can spend days in SharePoint install and uninstall. In most cases, when I visit a client to help with the installation, they ...
Just installed BizTalk on my Vista notebook. Here are some information that may help: My BizTalk’s edition – BizTalk Server 2006 R2 (Developer edition) Operating System – Windows Vista Ultimate The installation process is as seamless as it was for previous editions of BizTalk Server 2006. Only important point to remember is you download the prerequisite cab file for Vista. You may be in habit of using previously downloaded prerequisite cab file. Setup will automatically download the CAB file (BtsRedistVistaEN32.cab) ...
I was at the SOA/BPM Conference this week at reading and was watching one of the presentations which discussed the differences between BizTalk and Dublin. It occured to my that with BizTalk being pitched as the integration product and dublin being pitched as the application server product this means that BAM is strategically misplaced in terms of being within BizTalk. This is just my opinion but I think that in the future it would make sense to move BAM to be part of the SQL Server BI offering. I ...
I just picked this up on RSS and am psyched! We've been using DataDude since early on in it's initial release. It has become an integral part of our database schema development process. Hats off to Gert and all of the others on the VSTS DbPro team for all of the great new features, extensibility and SQL Server 2008 support in the new edition. You can read more about it in Gert's blog post. SALUTE! Jim ...
So this is one of my “in the trenches” blogs. I’ve been setting up a new server to run WSS 3.0, which I’ve done a dozen times. I have several SharePoint 2007 servers I am currently running, and WSS is a prerequisite, so this shouldn’t have been an all weekend project. But, for some reason, this particular install was not cooperating. I performed the same steps in the same order, except in this case I did not install SQL Server. In most of my installations I installed SQL Server since I would be using ...
