Problem: My SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) service does not start automatic (although it’s been set as automatic). The thing is, if I try to start it manually it throws an error as “Windows could not start the SQ Server (SQLEXPRESS) on local computer. For more information, review the system Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 17058.” Solution: I solved it by changing that the service should start by the local system admin from ...
Next week (23rd March 2009) I am speaking at DevWeek 2009. DevWeek is a great conference which attracts top notch speakers (plus me – I feel such a fraud whenever I present there!). It is IMHO the best developer focused conference we have in the UK and I can’t wait to get there and soak in the great sessions + catch up with familiar faces + meet plenty of new ones. Be warned. There is a rumour that we are being given some new toys (Flip video cameras) to play with while we are there. However don’t ...
Recently a few of us were speaking about what would be the future of BizTalk after the 2009 release. I already had a few thoughts on what I think would be great additions to the product and what strategic directions it may move in. I have checked to ensure that none of my thoughts breach the MVP NDA and after getting the thumbs up I've listed my thoughts below so there might be a bit of discussion on these ideas. FileStream data type is a very important feature of SQL Server 2008 and gradually getting popular amongst developer for it’s feasibility. As I need to send email to many people, i need to convert multiple emails into a single row delimited by semi-colon(;), i had lots of solutions, but which is an old type of solution which needs more lines of code. As i want to use one or two line code which would resolve, i found three methods for my solution which is very simple. Method 1: DECLARE @str varchar(4000) SET @str = (SELECT CONTACT_EMAIL + ';' FROM table FOR XML PATH('')) SET @str = SUBSTRING(@str,1,LEN(@str)-1) SELECT @str Method 2: ...
David Penton is another one of those folks that I’ve known for a while via the InterTubes but never had the pleasure of meeting in person until the MVP Summit. He also works on one of my favorite products, which means if I have any questions… he’s the first name on my list. After hanging out in Seattle for a few days, I realized I hadn’t yet done a NINE Questions interview on David, so today’s your lucky day: 1. Where are you from? I was born and bred in Dallas, TX. I've lived in the Dallas area ...

Introduction This Sunday I upgraded my DELL Latitude | D830 from Windows Vista Business 64 bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. The build version is Windows 7 Beta Build 7000. I ran an upgrade to test how well the setup would play with my currently installed applications and configuration settings. My expectations we met and in some cases exceeded. For example, soon after launching the setup a compatibility checker was launched. This screen scanned my current OS (Vista) to make sure all installed applications ...

[Source: http://geekswithblogs.net/E... I've been working on a Guidance package which lets you use Visual Studio as a front end to generate items from T4 templates. Using a recipe wizard you choose your metadata from a Web service, database or file system source, and the template is rendered against each of the metadata objects you select. It's on CodePlex here: Code Generation Guidance Package, and comes in two flavours. The basic Guidance package has a single recipe "Add generated items" ...
I was working on a SSIS Data Flow Task by passing Package Variables into a Stored Procedure. I will be using [AdventureWorks] sample database included with the SQL Server installation. Below is the screenshot of bits and pieces of my SSIS Package configuration. I was trying to get SQL Server 2008 express installed and every time I ran the installation program it kept coming up saying that my computer was failing the test that the computer required a restart. After a few restarts and the program still saying that my computer required a restart I came across this posting on the MSDN forums. To convert a string value to an Enum, which may be required after retrieving data from an SqlDataReader. To give more context an Order object is created/returned from a static method GetOrderByOrderId and the Order object has a property OrderStatus that is an Enum which needs to be converted as it is stored as a string variable in SQL Server database table. Example Enum OrderStatus: public Enum ArtifactType { Folder, File } Order Class to represent our Order Object: public class Order { public int ...
Well, from past two days I am working on SQL Server 2008 new feature called File Stream. In the period of SQL Server 2005 when we want to store some files to the database we can have that using varbinary(max) but that approach is not either smart nor popular amongst the developers. So, many developers like me wants to store images on any physical location and keep the file location in the table. But, that have issues too, what if somebody delete the files from physical location ? will file entries ...

Last night Rainer Habermann and I led an “iPimp your Architecture”. We had a special treat for the attendees… see end of article. The first subject of discussion was the name. Alternate names for this type of session were “Trick my Architecture”, “Architect Garage” and “Fix my Architecture”. So.. before the next time we do this we will consider the name again. First up was Ray Almonte who described a 4.5 million line, mostly c++ client / server cad app that helps design buildings that use his companies ...
We just had a problem with data that is sent to SQL Server as a XML string. One of the values sent to the SQL Server is defined in the C# class as a double and interpreted as a 'DECIMAL(28, 9)' on the SQL Server. This was working so far. Just wen someone entered a quite small number (0.000013) it stopped working. The reson: 1.3E-05 is sent to the SQL Server and it can’t interprete this. It COULD be parsed on the SQL Server, although would involve some floting point madness that could mess up the ...
After a long long struggle finally me and my team was able to run the Analysis Services reports on SQL Server 2008. We had a big trouble while installing the Analysis Extensions of MS Dynamics 2009 on SQL Server 2008. Moreover, 64-bit added to more troubles. While installing Analysis Extensions on a machine running SQL Server 2008, as soon as you check the checkbox for Analysis Extensions you would encounter an error SQL Server 2005 Analysis SP2 or higher required to continue the install. There are ...

This is another instalment of avoiding the use of dynamic controls in ASP.NET. The new ASP.NET ListView control is really rather neat; using this control obviates many of the problems which previously led developers to develop dynamic control-based pages, and can replace reams of nasty control creation loops with a simple and intuitive markup-based alternative. One problem which is frequently addressed by developers is the display of hierarchical data. A simple solution to this is to use a treeview ...

Hello, and welcome to my blog. I've set this up as somewhere I write about the technology I'm involved in, and possibly some of the business which uses that technology. I am a BizTalk developer, which I guess also means part-time designer or architect, depending upon the scale of the project or who I'm working for at the time. As well as BizTalk, I have most of the usual complementary skills in .Net (C#), SQL Server (up to 2005 so far), and some exposure to a greater or lesser degree to several other ...
I find it very therapeutic to “sync to paper” on a regular basis. Yesterday I was grumpy as I had way too much in my head and in my Inbox. Late last night I grabbed my trusty Moleskine and wrote it all down – I “synced to paper”. I slept well and woke up grump free. I also realised while “syncing to paper” last night that I carry around a lot of links in my head to stuff I find in my job which I keep meaning to share but never quite do. The sort of stuff I might mention to you if we met in the staff ...
In the UK I am the technical editor for the MSDN Flash. This weeks edition was a special focused on free software. I gathered together some of the best downloads based on recommendations from friends, colleagues and customers (which in case you were wondering is an overlapping group of individuals) plus a few of my personal favourites. I have tried to get something for everyone. From fairly generic utilities such as Free Download Manager and Unlocker, specialist tools such as SketchPath for XPath ...

Previously I posted an example on how to download multiple images or files using DotNetZip library here. Today I will explain how we can use the same library to unzip images from a zipped folder and insert them into an SQL Server table. Note: I have used NeatUpload library developed by Dean Brettle to display import progress to the user which can be found here. If you don’t want to use it, remove the namespace from the code and modify the code to not use NeatUpload controls. Libraries used: 1. DotNetZip ...
The following is a simple checklist you can use when building web applications. Much of this still applies to other technologies and can easily be extended. I try not to get too specific on technology or methodology, but it is definitely leaning toward ASP.NET. If you can think of something I am missing or disagree, please leave a comment. Detailed information follows the checklist. How much of the checklist you follow will depend on the project. If its just a hobby site, you may skip items like ...

Tonight I have to stay late at work to finish up some migrations and to handle a customer request that's a few days old. This post is regarding the aging customer request. I need to create a reproduction of a report that was generated on Saturday. To do this, I've got to copy down some prod data to my local database and delete any data newer than Saturday. Next, I'll set my system time to 1/24/09, fire up Visual Studio, open my Reporting Services project and finally load the report in question. With ...
