Apart from Dictionary<TKey, TValue>, there's two other dictionaries in the BCL - SortedDictionary<TKey, TValue> and SortedList<TKey, TValue>. On the face of it, these two classes do the same thing - provide an IDictionary<TKey, TValue> interface where the iterator returns the items sorted by the key. So what's the difference between them, and when should you use one rather than the other? (as in my previous post, I'll assume you have some basic algorithm & datastructure ...

En el PDC10 del año pasado se realizaron una serie de anuncios alrededor de la Plataforma de Windows Azure, entre estas se incluyo el anuncion de una beta privada para la instancia ExtraSmall de Windows Azure. I’ve been a bookworm for years and have amassed a significant volume of books of all kinds. Most of my collection is technology related, but volumes of Conan, manga, astronomy, philosophy, genetics, personal productivity, science fiction, fantasy, and just about everything else abound. After getting my Kindle Christmas before last, and later, my iPad, I’ve grown steadily more comfortable with reading and utilizing digital printed media. This comfort level, coupled with my semi-new found desire to ...

I have recently completed reviewing the APress book "Beginning C# Object-Oriented Programming" - ISBN13: 978-1-4302-3530-9. This is a good book to learn C# by doing something practical. I would give this book an unqualified excellent rating except there was some out of date advice on Exception handling with respect to the use of ApplicationException. (The advice given with Framework 2.0 has been superceeded. - see http://msdn.microsoft.com/e... where it states ...
Hello, I've been struggling with variations for a lot of time. I always thought that it was a stupid feature in sharepoint because of the conflict it creates. It keeps on updating the page in the variation labels if you update it in the source label, which might not be very useful unless you're using resources heavily and localization. The solution to this, was to disable the automatic propagation from the source label to all other labels, using this snippit: [System.Reflection.Assembly... ...

Over the past eight years I have been trying to make the switch to Apple from a PC for knowledge and education. I still feel Mac OS X is severely lacking when it comes to actual business or server computing needs, but as a home platform for base operations to the laymen it is a viable option. Recently I upgraded may Apple hardware to a new I 7 Macbook Pro from my Dual Core Mac mini. Boy has this turned out to be a less than just merely frustrating experience. For all the Apple fanatics who claim ...
Here is the interesting problem of the week... finally figured it out! All of a sudden this Monday, our clients started getting "Service Unavailable" errors all of a sudden. I looked deeper in to it, and it turned out the Application Pool on IIS6 for the ASP .Net app had crashed. So I restarted it, and everything started working again. But this started happening intermittently about twice daily. Big problem. The event log on the server showed: Application pool 'XXX' is being automatically disabled ...
It has been several months since I originally got my Omnia 7 phone. You can read about my first impressions of the phone – after actually using the device for a few months I have begun to enjoy it, but a few times I felt that I was missing out on something. My biggest gripe on why I felt the device would not gain traction in the South African market was mainly due to market place problems (being South Africa we could not buy apps). The Upgrade Experience Two days ago when a message on my phone popped ...
Yes, all unhandled exceptions will kill the IIS worker process, but in WCF you can tag an IErrorHandler onto your service behavior and all unhandled exceptions will be neatly taken care of. Unless that exception is thrown from a factory task, in which case the error handler is bypassed and the worker process is killed. So this code: public ServiceResponse OnBoardClient(Client newClient) { if (IsValid(newClient)) { var client = newClient; Task.Factory.StartNew(() => OnBoardClientInternal(clien... ...

Introduction Just the other day I blogged about “Enabling Frame Rate Counter for XAML Applications in Windows 8”. At the very end of that post, I reminded everyone that that method does not work for HTML / JS Metro Applications. But, we are in luck as Mathias Jourdain provided sample code for accomplishing this in HTML / JS in his Build talk. The only problem was that he didn’t describe how to hook this into a new application to actually use. That is going to be the focus of today’s blog post. Let’s ...

A couple of months ago an opportunity unexpectedly made its way into my life that would offer something different for my career. At first I ignored it, but after a while I started thinking about the possibilities before me. There were a couple of job openings at this “little” company, which you may have heard of before, Microsoft, that intrigued me. I began asking myself, “Self, would you ever leave Sparkhound and if you would what would the job have to be like.” Well, I wasn’t exactly sure, but ...
This example is not covered in the ESB Toolkit samples and I bumped my forehead a few times while making it work. I thought it’d be helpful to save other fellow BizTalk'ers from headaches by publishing findings. I have been fun of dynamic generic messaging for quite a while and went long ways to avoid working with typed messages and static bindings when it made sense. Nowadays, with the ESB Toolkit one does not have to spend much effort to achieve this goal. But one has to learn intricacies of configuration ...

In 1983, the term Exploratory Testing was introduced. Prior to that, it is called as ad-hoc testing. Exploratory testing is said to be a mindset, a way of thinking, freestyle testing that liberates the tester to explore. Testers, through experience, know their applications inside out; they are the users in reality. Freeing testers to explore and use the application has been proven to identify more bugs then traditional scripted testing. However, there are obstacles and challenges related to this ...

Well, as mentioned in my earlier posts, the ASP.NET MVC 4 has Developer Preview has been released. You might notice quite a bit of this term “Developer Preview” in 2-3 products specifically. One, Windows 8 is now available as simply Windows Developer Preview. Similarly, Visual Studio 11 is Developer Preview and also the Internet Explorer Platform Preview 3 is a Developer Preview, as with the case with Expression etc., Now, to clarify on a few things which I learnt. The Windows 8, hereinafter referred ...

So two years ago I had the privilege of attending my first ever Microsoft Conference in 2009. It was pretty neat, because I got to meet a lot of great people and go to a lot of awesome session. This time around, however, it’s my third Microsoft Conference and a little different. I get to be a speaker for my code upgrade session on Thursday, October 6th at 10:30 (End to End Guide to Upgrading Custom Code from 2007 to 2010 – SPC395). I also get to sit on the Women in Technology Panel at the Perficient ...
How fun is it to use new software? As a developer you always want to use the latest software, and in many cases it’s backwards compatible. This (unfortunately) isn’t the case with Report Builder 3.0 and SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services. This is a “by design” issue, but it’s such an annoying “feature”. If you try to deploy a Report built in RB 3.0, you will get the error: "The report definition is not valid. Details: The report definition has an invalid target namespace 'http://schemas.microsoft.c... ...

At last, I can announce that ‘BizTalk Server 2010 Unleashed’ has been published and is available through major booksellers in both printed and electronic form. The book is not a new edition of the old ‘BizTalk Server 2004 Unleashed’ book from several years ago, although Brian Loesgen, our fearless team leader, provided continuity with that title. Instead, this is entirely new content written by a team of six authors, including myself. BizTalk Server is such a huge subject. It proved a challenge to ...

So its been a few weeks since Microsoft’s Build conference, where they unveiled Windows 8 and shared what the developer story will be. I had blogged about Day 1 of the conference here, but I wanted to share some video I took with my colleagues Winson Woo and Jim Russell as my thoughts now that a bit of time has lapsed. So first, a video captured right after we got our hands on the Samsung tablet given to all attendees. Yes the tablet is nice, but this conference is all about the OS. Windows 8 as ...
One of the very useful features of the MVVM Light toolkit is to help with the creation of design time data, in order to give something to see on the design surface (Expression Blend, Visual Studio designer). This is especially useful when designing list controls such as ListBox, ComboBox, etc. Without design time data, these controls will remain empty, and the designer will not see what he is working on. This can cost a lot of time and cause frustration. Read the rest of this entry » ...
Another quick tip: Most of the interaction with the System.Type class in Windows 8 is now done through the TypeInfo class. An instance of TypeInfo for a give type is retrieved using an extension method called GetTypeInfo(). Note that since this is an extension method, it will not be visible in Intellisense unless you add a reference to System.Reflection in the “using” section: Read the rest of this entry » ...
