This blog post started as a simple one, but grew to be quite large and time consuming. I am splitting it, because I really want to publish the first findings already. Stay tuned for more! I am sure that you heard that Windows 8 was released last week in an early although quite stable stage called "consumer preview". Windows 8 is an interesting mix of touch-based and mouse/keyboard based system. Some aspects are a bit annoying (see my post about the "split personalities" in Win8 to see what I mean!) ...
Last week was the Microsoft MVP Global Summit, where Microsoft brings together their independent experts and community leaders for a week of sessions, product group interactions, and some fun along the way. These nights are always epic, stretching into the wee hours of the morning. I brought my camera and flipcam with me this year to capture the events, and so I give you The Most Epic MVP Attendee Party EVAR in Three Acts! It has everything – Playing football on an NFL field, singing karaoke with ...

Microsoft Dynamics 4.0 has a 32-bit BizTalk Adapter which is not compatible with 64-bit versions of Windows or BizTalk. Under Windows Server 2003, the AX 4.0 Adapter would not even install on the 64-bit version of the OS. On Windows Server 2008 R2 (which is only 64-bit), the Adapter installs, but it won’t work. However one of my colleagues, Justin, figured out what is wrong with the Adapter and a workaround to “fix it” so that it would work. The AX 4.0 BizTalk Adapter is a remoting adapter and there’s ...
This blog post is not to hurt any one, just a thought that I got in my mind when I was walking from an Apple Store to a Microsoft Store. I am not judging any one here but if you are from the DC area and been to Tysons Corner’s Apple and Microsoft Store you can see the change on how the migration happened from the Apple to the Microsoft Store. Lets all do a time travel back to couple of centuries , we have sees lot of videos, documentaries & movies that showed us how and what people were doing ...
Disclaimer:, The views and opinions expressed in this post are solely my own and I’m not getting paid or compensated for anything. A number of friends having been posting about what they pack into their work travel backpack lately. Since I started traveling frequently with Microsoft I’ve been slowly gathering various pieces of equipment for my own backpack. I’m at a fairly stable point and felt ready to share my list. Note that my backpack is intended for a heavy amount of week long travel with a ...
In this blog post I intend to capture some thoughts on code optimization in general and on how the new version of RedGate's ANTs Performance Profiler can be used to "optimize optimization". As developer's trying first to drive business value, many latch onto the mantra "Don't optimize too early". As with many axiom's, the spirit is right on - if you allow solving the business problem to wait while you shave milliseconds off of a process that takes minutes or you have found the best memory management ...
This weekend I was in Boston participating in Startup Weekend. There were over 150 people participating this weekend. This was my first startup weekend and their were over 70 ideas pitched on friday night. Once the voting was in the pitches were narrowed down to 20 ideas. We formed teams and I ended up on a team with 5 business people, 2 creative people and 3 developers. I worked with 2 Microsoft Evangelist’s Scott Klein and Nathan Totten who were in from Redmond. I noticed that there were a lot ...
In 2007, Microsoft created a "Tips for the Newbie" page for TechEd (which is apparently no longer available) and I created a follow-on post called Tech·Ed for Novices. I created a similar post in 2008 as well. With TechEd 2012 around the corner, I thought it would be good to bring it back. TechEd is a huge event, topping out at over 14000 people (usually), with an equally huge amount of content. This post is designed to give first time TechEd attendees a fighting chance of finding their way around. ...
Working though the white paper Microsoft Dynamics® AX 2012: Using Microsoft BizTalk Server 2010 to exchange documents with Microsoft Dynamics AX I came across an issue with incorrect information in the guidance given relating to some of the namespaces used:1. On page 19 the document states:"In the Properties pane, enter the Default Value for the sales order create operation: http://schemas.microsoft.co... Dynamics/2008/01/services/S... This is incorrect and the namespace ...

Summary I ran into a visual issue using DirectX (in C# via SlimDX) in which the texture filtering was not aligning properly. This is difficult to describe in words, so read the fully explanation below. The solution is pretty simple, so I decided to post about it in hopes that it is use to another DirectX neophyte in the future. The Problem Like most normal people, in my spare time I work on an open-source emulator for the long-lost 3DO multiplayer video game system (see fourdo.com for all your 3DO ...

Some Background The AdventureWorks database has been around for over a decade; a staple amongst sample databases. The first version of the AdventureWorks database appeared in time for SQL Server 2000. Microsoft has been good at keeping the AdventureWorks sample database up to date as new versions of SQL Server are released. Case-in-point: SQL Server 2012 is at RC0 and yet you can already find a version of AdventureWorks for it (albeit, it really isn’t that different from the SQL Server 2008 R2 version). ...
The first ever PowerShell Saturday will be taking place at the local Microsoft office in Columbus, OH on March 10, 2012. This is a little bit of a delayed announcement as the event has already sold out (yes, sold out a month before the event.) This will be a one day conference with speakers from around Ohio and a few from further away. The schedule and speaker lineup has not been officially announced but will be soon. If you were lucky enough to get one of the 100 registrations you’ll be able to ...
You asked for it, you got it! To help meet the needs of existing and future SQL Azure customers, Microsoft has announced that they are lowering the price of SQL Azure, and as well introducing a 100MB database option! The new pricing structure will result in cost savings from 48% to 75% of SQL Azure databases for databases larger than 1GB. Additionally, the new 100MB database option has been added to enable new customers to start using SQL Azure at half the cost of the previous price, yet still provide ...

We’re only in February, but the rest of the 10 months left in 2012 look to be very interesting in the Microsoft space with products that Developers and IT Pros will find intriguing. Redmond Channel Partner posted a great article outlining what products we can expect to make an appearance this year and when. Some highlights: Windows 8/Windows Server 8 Well we all know this is coming, and that it will be a huge focus of Microsoft’s marketing (once their people are actually allowed to talk about it). ...

A couple of days ago I decided to reinstall the latest Microsoft Developer Training Kits. One of those kits was the Windows Azure Training Kit. It turned out to be a web matrix install that seemed to take forever. More importantly it installed SQL Server 2012 for me. It may have prompted me but I don’t remember but once installed I entered a couple of days of nightmare mode. My RSSBus ADO connection to QuickBooks had stopped working and worst of all LightSwitch was totally broken. The problem is ...

This was a big week for Windows 8 news (given the relative secrecy around the whole project). At the beginning of the week we learned that the Consumer Preview (fka the "Beta") of Windows 8 will be released at the very end of the month in concert with the Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona (MWC). Then, just yesterday, Windows and Windows Live Division President Steven Sinofsky uploaded an 8600+ word post to the Building Windows 8 blog detailing Microsoft's plans for Windows on ARM (i.e. ...
There has been this notion that breadcrumbs disappeared in SharePoint 2010 but that’s entirely not true. Microsoft replaced the traditional breadcrumbs with the folder in the ribbon. Most of the time, end-users have a difficult time finding this navigation thus preferring the traditional breadcrumb. Here is a post from Erik Swenson on how to add or replace the folder breadcrumb, the only change I would recommend making, is changing your SiteMapProvider to CurrentNavSiteMapProviderNo... to prevent ...

This error message displays everytime you are trying to connect to the MTM 2010 though you are able to connect to TFS successfully from the VS 2010. The same article in the TechNet. If you are working with queues in BizTalk Server, the most possible it is the MSMQ (in my experience). MSMQ is an old man of the Microsoft technology stack. It was created when there were no good standards for messaging. Now MSMQ is wrapped partly in the .NET System.Messaging namespace. It is just a small facelift. MSMQ is still a proprietary technology without well-defined messaging protocol. It means, you cannot use the MSMQ messaging protocol without MSMQ itself. ...

Before I get into this I am not an Office Live Small Business or Office 365 expert but I have used Office Live Small Business for number of years as a light weight way of managing some parts of my business. I now need to migrate to Office 365 and one of the areas which concerned me was around custom lists which had attachments. I had a number of these with lots of rows and I had been waiting for some information on how these would be migrated and hoped they would just be migrated for me automatically. ...
The landscape of SQL Azure backups is changing rapidly. A few tools are becoming available at no charge and Microsoft is adding capabilities over time. Here a quick update.Microsoft ToolsMicrosoft offers two primary backup mechanisms so far:Export/Import feature available on the Azure Management portalThe COPY operation as part of its T-SQL CREATE DATABASE statementThese mechanisms do not offer a scheduling component and do not work together. To obtain a transactionally consistent backup, you first ...

Exchange is a complex and large product which can have one thousand and one possible issues, one more obscure as the next. The purpose of this guide is to shed some light, where possible, to how things work in Exchange (and outlook), how they can break and how you should approach the issue at hand. Unfortunately it is very time consuming to create a complete troubleshooting guide where every dependency is explained in detail. But that is not the aim of this document anyways. What is the aim? Give ...
As you might, or not, be aware off there is no item level based recovery in Exchange that is natively supported by Microsoft. So to perform recoveries we need the recovery storage group (captain obvious). The purpose of this is to mount the database you want to recover from on the Exchange server and use exmerge to merge the data you are recovering into the active database. An RSG will not be accessible to users and you can only create one at a time. Exchange 2003: 1. Open Exchange system manager ...
Troubleshooting the information store service can be straightforward yet immensely complicated if you don’t know what is going on. For this reason I think it is important to know that there are 3 likely culprits that will cause your information store service to go down and refuse to come up: · Database problems · Active directory problems · Antivirus software Trying to work out which is the culprit can be hard, elimination is probably the easiest way to work through this… So let us get started! 1. ...
Usually you’ll get alerted to this issue with a call saying that users have not gotten any new email for a while. They will still be connected to Exchange in outlook, you can still log on to the OWA and, when looking at your hub servers, you can see that the all services are up and running (Note that it is possible the transport service could be stopped…). A number of reasons can exist as to why you are not getting any mail flow: · Your recipient polies are not configured correctly · The receive ...

Today I was finally able to post the registration site for an upcoming full day workshop that our .NET User Group had been anticipating for quite some time. Although this seems like a trivial thing to get head over heels excited about, getting to this point took months of planning, organizing, polling, budgeting, begging and cold calling. So pardon me while I round a few cartwheels to celebrate this milestone. When the good folks at Microsoft put forth the offer to the User Groups to host a full ...

I have seen a number of questions lately regarding how SQL Azure handles throttling and how to determine why the throttling occurred. Sometimes those questions are followed by another question asking how to handle throttling conditions in their applications. Troubleshooting SQL Azure Throttling GREAT NEWS! There actually is a way to find out if you are throttled and why, and the results of the throttling. The key is to look at the error message coming back to you. You’ll typically see an error message ...

Udi Dahan briefly chats about MSMQ on his blog and provides a useful link: Microsoft has put MSMQ in the Developer Preview of Server 8 (as Brian Buvinghausen has written here). Microsoft added MSMQ to Server Core in Windows Server 8” So it will be interesting to see how they got round the limitations of previous versions of Windows Server Core ...
Architecture of PeopleSoft Adapter: The BizTalk PeopleSoft Adapter is based on the BizTalk Server Adapter Framework. More info: How the Adapter Is Designed: The Adapter Framework. The PeopleSoft adapter basically communicates with the PeopleSoft Component Interfaces via the PeopleSoft JOLT protocol (over TCP/IP). The adapter communicates with PeopleSoft system by receiving a XML message which is later encapsulated into a SOAP request using the PeopleSoft psjoa classes. With this connection we can ...
