I was pleasantly surprised by my inbox yesterday to find that my session submission for VMWorld 2011 had been accepted! I had been trying for many years to break in to doing some sessions at Microsoft's TechEd - always to no avail. It always seemed like you had to know the secret handshake, be an MVP or work for Microsoft. I felt like I was destined to settle with speakling at user groups, no matter how badly I tried to get more experience in front of larger groups. So when my local VMWare account ...
Vista has an auto tuning feature which is hit and miss, depending on what network appliances/cards/devices you've got hooked up. Try this: 1. Navigate to Start>Programs>Access... Command 2. Type: netsh interface tcp show global 3. Look the line for receive window auto tuning. If it says highlyrestricted type this command (all on one line): netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=restricted 4. Try browsing, if it isn't any better, enter the same command like, just change restricted ...

I was chatting the other day with someone about adapters for connecting to LOB applications and an interesting point came up which I thought id share my thoughts on. The scenarios is that if you have a line of business application for arguments sake lets say its dynamics CRM which has a BizTalk adapter available but also has an existing web service API (or some other protocol based API). Which should you use for integration? In my opinion the answer to this is the usual "it depends" answer. I think ...
In my previous post, I covered how field, method, and other types of signatures are encoded in a .NET assembly. Custom attribute signatures differ quite a bit from these, which consequently affects attribute specifications in C#. Custom attribute specifications In C#, you can apply a custom attribute to a type or type member, specifying a constructor as well as the values of fields or properties on the attribute type: public class ExampleAttribute : Attribute { public ExampleAttribute(int ctorArg1, ...
Recently while performing a .Net unit testing on some .Net dll, I kept getting the below error - 'XXX is a strongly named assembly. It will need to be re-signed before it can be executed. Warning VSP2013 : Instrumenting this image requires it to run as a 32-bit process"...... A little of google revealed that since its a strongly named assembly and while performing unit testing it needed to be re-signed or I need to remove the 'strong name' all together... As I didn't had the orginal private key file ...
When I've tried to deserialize dictionary whis strongly typed(and not string) keys, I've got an exception similar to the following Type 'System.Collections.Generic... Jquery auto-complete, WCF Services and cross domain nightmares Gone are the days of using the Ajax toolkit, it’s far too bloated and can be very difficult to debug if anything goes wrong. So like many other developers I have made the conscious effort in swapping my attention to jQuery instead. I have recently been working on a project where I needed to implement a simple auto complete dropdown, so instead of reaching for the auto-complete extender from the Ajax toolkit I decided instead to use the ...
With Microsoft’s recommendation to use server core for Hyper-V systems, I have been seeing a lot of server core lately. With that in mind, I am posting how I set up a Server Core system (after base OS install). 1. Login to you Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core system 2. Run sconfig from the command line. This will bring up the Server configuration text user interface shown below. 3. From the Sconfig interface, set the following Network Settings (option 8) Date and Time (if needed) (option 9) Remote ...
LDAP is not Active Directory, though Active Directory is LDAP. As someone who drinks the Microsoft Kool-Aid, I found myself using LDAP for something other than Active Directory and I thought I should share what I have found. The problem domain was to connect a new MVC application to an existing Sun One LDAP Store. First off, authenticating an MVC application using forms mode authentication and the Membership providers is straight forward. Start with the ASP.NET MVC 2 Web Application Template that ...
Has the cloud backlash started? Stallman's cloudburst when he railed against the dangers of allowing our data to be locked up offsite and online (http://www.guardian.co.uk/... was perhaps predictable, but he is not the only voice to have suggested that cloud vendors are overselling the benefits and ignoring the risks. On the one hand we have some very large corporations (Amazon, Google and Microsoft in particular) pushing the advantages of migrating ...
Yesterday, at the Wall Street Journal’s “All Things D” conference, Microsoft’s President of Windows and Windows Live, Steven Sinofsky, showed the world a preview of Windows 8 (officially, that’s the code name). And in a YouTube video, Jensen Harris, Director of Program Management for Windows User Experience, provides his own detailed Windows 8 demo that you can check out right now. What both men showed us was an early preview of a next next version of Windows that looks a lot like Windows Phone 7, ...
Windows 8 is coming: http://www.huffingtonpost.c... I have been a Win 7 user for a long time and love it. Now comes Windows 8 on the horizon and its going to rock the world. Its build on a great base of technology and it’s the next gen of a great os. More is coming soon. Since the Win 8 OS has the totally new UI it should open up developing great UIs for touch screens too for lots of developers. It should be really interesting to see this take off. ...
I am definitely on the fence on this one. I love the look and experience of Windows 8 in the video, but I am worried about all the talk about HTML 5 and not hearing anything about the WPF/Silverlight/XNA story. We have seen Microsoft pick these tools for XBox and WP7, but now will they have a cohesive story that will sell tablets and also sell App builders. The winner this battle with have to have the Apps so I can see why HTML5 is compelling, but it also does not drive loyalty and leads into one ...
I spent some time today summarising the new features in the Windows Azure AppFabric May CTP for SolidSoft consultants. Microsoft released the CTP a couple of weeks ago and has a second CTP coming out later this month. I might as well publish this here, although it has been widely blogged on already. There is nothing that you can’t glean from reading the release documents, but hopefully it will serve as a shorter summary. The May CTP is all about the AppFabric Service Bus. The bus has been extended ...

Today, Microsoft announced some of the details about Windows 8 and how it is going to change web development forever. The announcement included a number of cool points about the upcoming OS but as someone in love with HTML5, these two points stood out to me: Web-connected and Web-powered apps built using HTML5 and JavaScript that have access to the full power of the PC. Fully touch-optimized browsing, with all the power of hardware-accelerated Internet Explorer 10. Okay, wow. That made my developer ...

In early 2010 I “complained” about the way we were explaining the Windows Azure Platform on our web site and pointed at a (IMHO) much better way of doing it by one of our competitors. A lot has changed since early 2010 and we now have some great resources – one of the best being “the super-slidy Windows Azure Pricing Calculator”. It comes highly recommended Check out http://www.microsoft.com/wi... P.S. and well done to the folks who created it! Related Links Sign up to ...
I came across this great article which talks about simply unloading projects from a solution to make the solution load and build faster in Visual Studio. This is great, as some of the solution files I work in contain over 300 projects and it can sometimes take a while to load. Also, because the information about which projects to load is stored in the .suo file (not the .sln file itself), this can be configured per developer so they only have to load the projects that they work in (the .suo files ...

We’ve used HtmlAgilityPack based function IsValidHtmlFragment(string html) to validate dynamically loaded Html Fragments before inserting into main page(or do not insert if it is invalid) and recently noticed that it doesn’t return false for some fragments with not closed tags. I decided to find some other tool to call from the code and found that most of HTML parcers are too forgivven(like browsers) or too strict- to check full XHTML conformance. I am going to add manual procedure to run Tidy.EXE ...

This past week was an interesting experience. My first trip to Washington DC on Washington business. As part of the Association for Competitive Technology (http://www.actonline.com) I joined 27 other small software developer company owners from around the country to visit and educate congressional staffs. I already knew 1/2 dozen of the people attending from my activities in the Microsoft developer community and had the pleasure of renewing friendships with them and making new friends with others. ...
I have recently come across this issue a number of times and was unable to find any reliable information about this on the web. So, after hours of troubleshooting and some calls with Microsoft, I found the following information. SYMPTOM: A Hyper-V Cluster will generate a 0x50 Blue screen during normal operation. This can happen on ANY node of the cluster. When reviewing the memory dump, you will see something similar to the following in the stack trace: STACK_TEXT: fffff880`0c1787d8 fffff800`02150f14 ...

In my prior blog post on this topic, I showed how to use the PowerShell Start-Process command to initiate the rebuild of a Visual Studio solution using MSBUILD. With today's post, I'll show how I've wrapped this call into a PowerShell function to make it more PowerShell friendly. As I mentioned last time, the wrapper function's name is Build-VisualStudioSolution. I know, I know... "Build" is not an approved verb. I decided it was the most appropriate verb for this function given the intent and circumstances. ...

If you've just joined this series, I highly recommend you read the previous posts in this series, starting here, or at least these posts, covering the CLR metadata tables. Before we look at custom attribute encoding, we first need to have a brief look at how signatures are encoded in an assembly in general. Signature types There are several types of signatures in an assembly, all of which share a common base representation, and are all stored as binary blobs in the #Blob heap, referenced by an offset ...
You’re a busy developer and you have read article after article of “What’s new in WP7 Mango” but you are only interested in knowing “What does this mean for me as a developer ?”. This means you can download the bits right now, but as far as having Mango on your phone you are going to have to wait. Let’s hit the bullet ...

Late last week it came to my attention that in Exchange 2010 SP1, Microsoft made some major changes to the way we export mailboxes to PST files. While I usually say that I embrace change, I don't when it comes to applications I manage. For those familiar with Exchange 2007, the Export-Mailbox cmdlet was a nice and easy method to take some email and dump it into a PST. All you had to do was provide yourself full access to the mailboxes you were looking to export and run the cmdlet. Well goodbye Export-Mailbox, ...
When we originally deployed OCS 2007 R2 in our environment, we only built one OCS 2007 R2 Access Edge Server. So, recently, we built three more OCS 2007 R2 Access Edge Servers for high availability and additional capacity purposes. To load-balance all of our Access Edge Servers, we use a hardware load-balancer. Please note a load balancer is required for arrays of OCS 2007 R2 Access Edge Servers. For more information about load balancers for OCS 2007 R2, please click here. Here are a few things we ...
