Well, since I am a bit new to this blogging thing, and especially tech blogging, I will start out with something light (and known around the web here and there). A simple fix for Outlook 2010 users still hampered an an Exchange 2003 system. It seems Outlook 2010 and Exchange 2003 have a small problem with booking resources on a meeting request. Even though Outlook says it is booked, the resource is not updated on the server….so, here's the fix. You edit the registry. start regedit and browse to: ...
I’ve been slowly creating a new WP7 game over these past few months. In the process, I began experimenting with Dxt compression. It’s a very nice feature, especially on the phone where high DPIs make Dxt’s artifacts less visible. One thing I didn’t like, though, was the way that XNA’s default Texture Processor handles resizing to power of two. When using Dxt compression with the Reach graphics profile, you need to use textures that are power of two sized (e.g. 32x64). Dxt itself requires that the ...
In the project that I’m working on (let’s call it BrainCredits v2.0), I wanted to integrate a user’s Gravatar into the system (like how StackOverflow does it). To Gravatar’s credit, they make it very easy to incorporate a user’s image – just hash the user’s email address (which I have) to the end of their URL and you’ll get the image back. The email address just has to be hashed using the MD5 algorithm, and they provide examples of how to do that in PHP. Oh, it looks so easy: echo md5( "MyEmailAddress@example.com ...
I have to update the windows service.exe and related dll by using console on remote computer. I tried net start <servicename> but it not allowed to query or issue command on the remote computer. then I tried sc & PsService from SysInternals. sc \\<ServerName> stop <ServiceName> PsService \\<ServerName> stop <ServiceName> the problem is both of them issue stop command and returned the control but I want to sure that service is stopped completely so that I can update ...
Initial situation Normally all of our installations are registered to the company name. But now we have the effect that some (developer) tool seems to overwrite this registry entries. That results in the following: License information from operation system in registry If you run winver.exe from a command line you will see this output: Copyright and vendor information from Assemblies And in new projects the information in the AssemblyInfo are: Origin of this problem We don’t know it. Maybe it is a ...
Let me state the obvious, for any application you develop you need to log information, errors, exceptions etc that can help you and others know what’s going on with your application When you create a new Windows Azure application using Visual Studio you will find the following snippet in your configuration file <system.diagnostics> <trace> <listeners> <addtype="Microsoft.Wind... I decided today to go back and take another chance to NUnit, but firstly I needed to have a possibility to integrate the NUnit and VS, because launching external program to run my tests is tiring. After few minutes I fonud a nice VS plugin to integrate a Visual Studio and NUnit: it's name is Visual NUnit. I had one problem with this extension. When I wanted to fire my first NUnit test, I had an System.BadImageFormatException exception. I had to change the tests project target platform to x86. After ...
Today at work we had an interested request come in from a client. They had an iPad and couldn’t scroll on their SharePoint 2010 website. I went ahead and pulled out my iPad 2 even though I am mostly a Microsoft guy and decided to look around on their site. Their homepage loaded fine and a couple others did also. I kept browsing and discovered one page that just cut off when you tried scrolling. I decided to try all of the iOS web browsers that are free so I downloaded them all and none of them solved ...
Visual Studio have a nice integration of Extensions. Sometime when you want a feature you can easily got extensions (plugins) from Visual Studio gallery. Like javascript extensions you need to remove every component of plugin one by one.For removing all extensions in Visual studio manually You need to open Window ...

Shervin Shakibi, Microsoft Regional Director, was our speaker at the West Palm Beach .Net User Group July 2011 meeting. Shervin’s talk was demo-centric where he showcased the power of HTML 5 by example. Issues discussed at the meeting included suggestions on mitigating security concerns with HTML 5 source code accessibility as well as the status and timeline for HTML 5 readiness. Shervin’s much anticipated talk brought us over 25 members who filled our CompTec meeting room. We appreciate Shervin’s ...
To prepare a bootable CE disk for PC based system, you need to create the partition, format it and transfer the booting files. CE provides a tool CESYS.EXE to transfer boot sector and copy bootloader to target volume for BIOSLOADER. The tool is created since CE 4 and unfortunately, it is out dated and only support FAT12 or FAT16. Modern storage devices have larger capacity and prefer or require to use FAT32/ExFAT. For CE7, there is a new CESYS platform\CEPC\src\boot\tool... that ...

It’s official!! Microsoft released Visual Studio LightSwitch 2011 today. Here are a few places to read more about today’s release and for more information about LightSwitch 2011. Jason Zander’s blog The LightSwitch Team blog Beth Massi’s blog I’m excited about the release. Today’s timing is perfect since we have a project we’re about start and we’re going to be using LightSwitch in order to quickly get a functioning application in front of our users. Based on the initial prototyping work we’ve done ...
As of today, the official release of Lightswitch is now available. Visit: http://www.microsoft.com/vi... or you can download from your MSDN subscription. What is Lightswitch? It is basically a simple to use application generator that can be used to build applications within minutes in many cases. If you have an existing, well structured (primary keys, relationships) SQL Server database you are just a few clicks away from an administration tool and well on the way to a full ...
I have to admit that I’m a basic user when it comes to JSON serialization/deserialization. I’ve used JSON.NET and the DataContractJsonSerializer. I’ve read that JSON.NET is faster and more efficient than the built-in .NET serializer, but I haven’t had to build a system that is dependent on squeezing microseconds out of my serialization routines. That said, I do prefer JSON.NET because it is more flexible when it comes to using DataContractAttribute and DataMemberAttribute for customizing your JSON ...

Recently I began studying for the 70-400, System Center Operations Manager 2007, Configuration. Before I was told that we needed someone certified in SCOM I didn't even know what it was! I began like every student does. I went to www.google.com. I learned that this was a very powerful tool that Microsoft has developed which is part of the System Center product line. This particular piece of software focuses on monitoring and recovery of systems. So instead of realizing that a server is offline, you ...
This is a unknown issue with Certificates in BizTalk Server. You see the error every time when you open or save send port configuration, it won't affect the functionality, but very annoying. It usually happens when you remotedly log on to a BizTalk server at which the "Other People Certificate Store" is not initialized. Microsoft has an article talking about this issue, and it suggests to initialized the "Other People Certificate Store" during the Group configuration. However, if you have your BizTalk ...
Recently whilst rewriting some VB6 applications into C#, I found I missed the ability to use the mouse scroll wheel to scroll forward and back through the code. So I hunted around and found: http://support.microsoft.co... http://blogs.msdn.com/b/pow... With the help of these articles, I quickly downloaded and installed the scroll utility, Once the DLL was registered and enabled in the Add-in manager, I was able to scroll easily through the VB6 code ...
Someone on Serverfault noticed that the TechNet article “Network Ports Used by Message Queuing” states MSMQ over HTTP(S) requires TCP port 1801: Delivery mechanism Required ports HTTP TCP port 1801 The TCP port that is used for HTTP traffic by the Message Queuing Server which has the HTTP Support feature enabled. By default, Internet Information Services (IIS) uses TCP port 80 for HTTP traffic. HTTPS TCP port 1801 The TCP port that is used for HTTPS traffic by the Message Queuing Server which has ...
Oliver Ogg Oliver Ogg, occasional salsa dancer, blogged the other day about a problem he was having installing MSMQ. The root cause was an invalid registry entry for the Event Log Service. MSMQ needed to write an event during setup but would fail as this service was not working. Once the Event Log service was fixed, MSMQ would install successfully. The problem was specifically the ServiceDll registry value referring to an empty string so the event log service could not find the service DLL file to ...
Article Source: http://geekswithblogs.net/c... What is the best approach for developing a WCF client application that sends messages to the WCF on-ramps exposed by the BizTalk ESB Toolkit? I had considered various approaches: Generate an xml message from a string template using string replacements. Then submit the message to the ESB endpoint using code similar to the Itinerary Test Client provided with the ESB Toolkit. Then for the response use XPath to get the required data. - This is obviously ...
Continuing my “From Soup to Nuts” series or sometimes referred to as “The Busy Developers Guide” series, I will take a look at the Surface 2.0 SDK recently released by Microsoft. Lately i have seen the below remarks coming through in the communities, Get Latest does not work in TFS I always have to use Get Specific version to get the server changes on my local Why get latest misses updating some files while get specific works I’ll be using the TFS API to show you how the “Get Latest” is suppose to work and show you how you can avoid getting in a situation where you might have to use “Get Specific” to get the latest version of your workspace. I would assume that you know the ...
Microsoft Expression Blend is a design tool that allows you to create fantastic user interfaces for such Windows based applications and Web applications. You can use Expression Blend with .NET Framework 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0 applications. What Blend can do for you One of the prime advantages of Expression Blend is its ability to separate code from design. Using Blend, designers can work independently on one set of deliverables for a project while developers can work on another. But this doesn’t mean ...
I recently obtained a Samsung Omnia 7 with the WP7 OS. Straight off the bat - let me say how impressed I am with this phone and how easy it is to use. It took about 3 minutes to have all my Gmail and Facebook contacts loaded and merged and be connected to the Wifi. Another huge plus is the Zune software. This absolutely beats the ITunes for Windows software hands down when it comes to podcasts. Other pluses included the screen being so bright and the physical size of the phone which is comfortable ...
In a number of talks I’ve given, including a session at last year’s Microsoft BI Conference, I’ve mentioned that if you’re not looking at partner offerings in the Microsoft Business Intelligence ecosystem, then you’re not getting the full Microsoft BI picture. This rubs two ways: Microsoft BI may look misleadingly deficient, in comparison to its competitors, if partner solutions are not taken into consideration If you’re an MS BI user and you’re not looking at partner products, your MS BI investment ...

Last week I was at the Microsoft WPC conference in Los Angeles. I’ve been to other Microsoft developer conferences like Tech Ed and PDC before, but this was my first WPC and it was a great experience. For one thing, the target audience is blatantly business, sales, and marketing. It was a weird feeling attending a Microsoft conference and not knowing *anybody* (although some familiar faces were found). I have links below to notes I made for the individual days of the conference, but I wanted to point ...
Introduction One of the first things I wanted to do after installing the Azure AppFabric June CTP was to create an AppFabric application that used the Bing Map SOAP services. That was when I hit my first roadblock. There is currently no option in the AppFabric Application Designer to add a reference to an external service. After asking around in the forums I learned that I should build an external service to do this. There is currently very little documentation on creating external services for Azure ...
Last day of WPC, so what should we start with? You guessed it – KEYNOTES! But Thursday was all about the regional keynotes, so all the Canadian partners packed into a room to hear from Canadian Microsoft executives. In Canada there are three different groups within Microsoft Canada – Small/Medium Business, Enterprise Business, and DPE. While in the past partners were slotted into one of the different groups, now moving forward we’re all just identified as playing in a certain area, not committed ...
We kick off Day 4 at, you guessed it, another keynote (maybe they should rename this to the Worldwide Partner Keynote Conference?). We kick off with the Canadian Tenors singing some song they wrote for the Vancouver Olympics, and then a parade of partners carrying their country’s flag enters. I feel like I’m at Folklarama back in Winnipeg. ;) So today we have some big names speaking. Kevin Turner, Microsoft’s COO and Sir Richard Branson are on the schedule. Kevin Turner If you have never seen Kevin ...
The keynote session for the morning was a mixture of things. It started with an all-female rock band singing Cold Play’s “Viva la Vida”, then had all partners-of-the-year winners parade on stage, and then we got into the specific messaging part. There were five separate keynotes this morning from different business units within Microsoft. First up was Cloud. Note that I didn’t say Azure, although that’s part of it. Azure is the public cloud, but Microsoft talked up the Private Cloud a lot at this ...
In the past few months, we at the West Palm Beach .Net User Group have been busy soliciting your feedback on topics you would like covered at our upcoming meetings. We have also been encouraging our members to step up and share on the projects they work on and the technologies they use. The result is the schedule below which we hope brings a good variety of today’s hottest topics. We look forward to seeing you at our meetings and to receiving your feedback as we continuously strive to improve the ...
Why .NET LinkedList does not support Concat and Split operations? Download SimpleLinkedList source code Concat O(1) or O(n) ? The .NET LinkedList is a circular doubly linked list, where each node holds a reference to its previous and next nodes. The last node’s next is the head node and the head node’s previous is the last one. Linked lists are attractive because of O(1) insertion and removal operations. Instead of shifting elements in array you just chain nodes in appropriate order and that’s it. ...
I just got back from Microsoft’s 15,000 attendee-strong Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC) in Los Angeles, and I have to say, the company and its partners are pumped. How can this be, given the number of people who have written Microsoft’s eulogy of late? If Amazon owns the cloud, if Apple owns the consumer, if Google owns search, if Cisco owns unified communications, if EMC/VMWare owns virtualization, if Oracle and SAP own ERP and if Oracle/Siebel and Salesforce.com own CRM, how can Microsoft be ...
If you upgraded your system to Windows 64 bit one and try to run 32 bit web application registry key entries are not going to be located at the same place. Apparently, 64 bit based version of Windows has a new registry branch for 32 bit programs. It is located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software registry folder named ‘Wow6432Node’. New program installations are monitored by system and registry entry are placed in proper folders based on is 32 or 64 bit program. For more info: http://support.microsoft.co... ...
Yesterday I started a discussion about adding a new command to nuget.exe. It ended in creating an extension to the command line that behaves in the same way without having to dive into the nuget code base or add more complexity to it. I haven’t seen any blog posts or documentation surrounding this new concept (new in nuget 1.4) of extending the command line except for Matt Hamilton’s posts on using NuGet for plug-ins and NuGet with MEF (which are not quite this concept). Here is my experience. I ...
At http://www.mindscapehq.com/... there is a new free Visual Studio 2010 add-on. "You may have noticed that this new-fangled Web thing is getting quite a bit of traction at the moment. And these days you can’t get away with static Web pages built with table-based layouts and presentational markup. It’s all script this and stylesheet that and jQuery the other. Why, even those time-hallowed animated GIFs of little men digging ...
MvcScaffolding is a tremendous productivity improvement for MVC developers. Earlier this year, Steve Sanderson posted the definitive 7-part series on MvcScaffolding which is a must-read for anyone serious about doing scaffolding. The best part about the scaffolding infrastructure is that MvcScaffolding is actually built on top of another package called T4Scaffolding. T4Scaffolding can be used as the basis for *any* scaffolding – not just MVC projects. To that end, we can enjoy the same power of MvcScaffolding ...
I wanted to take this time to introduce myself. My name is Roger O'Dell Jr. My development training is in .NET, but my current job requires me to work with Java and Android. I have been doing mobile development now for almost a year. And what a year it has been. I had the opportunity to go to a Microsoft Conference in Overland Park, KS last year. While I was there, I was one of the lucky few who was introduced to Windows Phone 7. Coming from an ASP.NET background, I found the new Windows Phone to ...

Thanks to everyone who attended my presentation last night at TriNUG. The code samples as PowerPoint can be downloaded here.

I’ve been looking through the temp directories on my production machines and had realized some overlooked design points in a number of programs; namely the deletion of certain temp files. One situation that particularly caught my attention was some email attachments that should have been deleted. Even though the code was actively calling File.Delete() on some email attachments, they were not being deleted. An error log showed the program was throwing an exception when attempting to delete the files. ...
Instead of making a list here of what requirements or needs for hardware hosts exist, I’ll make it plain and simple: CPU, memory and network links. Those are the most important things in a virtualization host and is all well documented in build guides across the internet. What I would to talk about is the following: Whitebox vs. Branded servers! Throughout the years I’ve been pretty much brainwashed (no kidding) that in a professional, production environment you only use “real” server hardware. And ...
