If you heard about Microsoft Oxite CMS, this is the new one, created as a different project to avoid previous developer comments.: From Press: Microsoft's open-source CMS platform is (re)born | All about Microsoft | ZDNet.com http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=4506 Project Homepage: http://orchard.codeplex.com Quote From Press: The guesses (by me and others) look like they were on target. The “Orchard Project,” which is getting its debut on November 11 at Tech Ed Europe is, indeed, the successor...
Microsoft has released a new Facebook SDK Version 3.0 (other than their old not-so-great one) and it looks to have not just updated APIs but also wide range of features supported in many application types. Quoting a related blog post from c|net “The web services report” blog: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13515_3-10393823-26.html Microsoft on Monday released a software development kit for Facebook that allows developers to create Facebook applications for Silverlight and Windows Presentation Foundation....
Some cool guys (all working in ITWorx I guess, one of the biggest Egyptian Software houses) have created a new website: http://www.sharepoint4arabs.com The website, as the name implies, is dedicated for ARABIC resources related to SharePoint. It originally contained the technical blogs of the site founders (Founders' Blogs) which are very useful for posts about SharePoint, then very recently they have also lunched Screencasts (Also in Arabic) that start from the very beginning until further advanced...
I try not to be too much of a reposter, but I got a little nostalgic on this one. I remember when the first version of this tome came out and I got a free copy when I visited Redmond for the Guided Design conference. You may not agree with everything you find in here, but it is definitely worth the read to see what Microsoft thinks architecture is. Microsoft has released a final version of its book “Microsoft Application Architecture Guide, 2nd Edition”. The book is described as: This guide is available online here in the MSDN Library and will be available in the Fall of 2009 as a Microsoft Press book, ISBN# 9780735627109, that you can purchase through local and online booksellers. The guide is intended to help developers and solution architects design and build effective, high quality applications using the Microsoft platform and the .NET...
Some of you who use Firefox (FF) might know about a Firefox plug-in called “IE Tab” which allows you to view a page/tab using the Internet Explorer (IE) rendering engine INSIDE Firefox (so, if some page displays better in IE, you don’t have to leave FF and go open an IE window). Now, Google is doing something similar, but the other way around! Google has recently released “Google Chrome Frame”, a plug-in for IE that allows you to view a page/tab using the Google Browser “Google Chrome” rendering...
Just a quick post to talk about the Smart DJ feature in the latest release (Version: 4.0.740.0) of the Zune software. There are several web sites that read from a database of music-listening user preferences, and display music maps based on an artist or song (music-map.com, for one). Zune has taken that one step further with their Smart DJ feature, which allows you to select an artist, album, or a song, and have the Smart DJ create a playlist based on similar songs, artists, genres, or whatever black...
I successfully installed the RTM version of Windows 7 last night. I got a copy of an .iso file for this due to my participation in the Windows 7 beta program. It was very nice of Microsoft to provide everyone that participated in the invited portion of the beta program to a free copy of Windows 7 Ultimate! Thanks Microsoft for that. I downloaded the 64-bit version of Windows 7 and burned that to a disc and booted up my machine to this disc. I have to say that it was just a little confusing at first...

Bing is a new search engine from Microsoft that has been released exactly one month ago. During this month it has created a lot of buzz. Bing is advertised by Microsoft to be a “Decision Engine” and it seems like there is a general feel, or at least enquiry, about bing constituting serious competition to Google search. After reading Scott Hanselman’s recent blog post comparing Lenovo’s ThinkPad W700 with the W500, I decided to give bing a little try. Google VS. Bing I decided to use google-vs-bing.com...
I was going to put this on twitter but it’s a bit longer to tweet. Last week I shared some videos on Google Reader and twitter from Microsoft’s MSDN Chopsticks video website. If you don’t know it, it’s a VERY nice videos website with much content on very interesting topics and very recent products as well as different experience levels of content. http://www.microsoft.com/belux/msdn/nl/chopsticks/ Today, some other friends on twitter noticed the Chopsticks site and were wondering why it doesn’t allow...
Thanks everybody who Participated in the event Microsoft Day @ Dhaka, held on 20 June 2009 at IDB Auditorium, Dhaka. It was an excellent gathering of 250+ professionals, specially developers in Bangladesh. Besides the knowledge sharing stuffs, the event was very successful to create a social gathering of technical professionals. I was really found it pretty nice that, I have meet at least 20+ guys there, whom I knew and meet virtually before. The good news for the community is, we will be organizing...
Microsoft Community in Bangladesh proudly presents Microsoft Day @ Dhaka. This is a special day dedicated to all Microsoft technology professionals and students in Bangladesh. We will be having the best Microsoft community technologists from Bangladesh - Microsoft Most Valuable Professionals (MVPs) delivering sessions at the event. This technology marathon is a great opportunity to learn from the best and network with each other. Both Microsoft developers and networking professionals would find the...
The LiveMeeting Q&A session with ScottGu was, as usual, very exciting. As promised, here are some of the highlights from his answers. Microsoft’s Development Process In terms of the development process at Microsoft, Scott said that more projects will be developed with openness, transparency, more frequent releases, relying on customers’ feedback and with OSI open source licenses as in the case of ASP.NET MVC. Silverlight In regards to Silverlight 3 release date, it might be around the July 10th....
So E3 has come upon us and is about to make its way out again. Anything that peaked your interests? I have to say by far I was happiest with what I can get for my XBox360 over anything coming out for the Wii (I’ve got no PS3). The games that I’m really looking forward that were shown off this year at E3 are Crackdown 2, Assassin’s Creed 2 and Forza Motorsports 3. I’ve spent many hours playing all three of those titles, and I’m happily awaiting their releases. AC2 and FM3 are both slated later this...
I will be attending a private LiveMeeting session tomorrow with Scott Guthrie, Corporate VP at Microsoft. Scott will probably discuss the new features in ASP.NET 4.0 and the future of ASP.NET Ajax. I am really excited and looking forward to this. ScottGu’s talks are always intriguing and interesting. I will try to blog about this session and what Scott discussed during the next few days. Meanwhile, do you have any interesting questions you want to ask him? No promises, but I will try my best to get...
Go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10434 ( Update: This is the only official provider made by Microsoft itself)This is the URL I originally posted (from which the below screenshots come): https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/12205 - Of course you are recommended to go to the official URL above. Check “Let me install this experimental add-on” and click “Add to FireFox” Now the add-in is there. In the search bar, click the little triangle at the left and choose Bing. In...
If you are not on Twitter, let me spread this by @bing: Ladies and Gentlemen, www.bing.com is live. :) (rollouts will continue however to partners and other mkts, more to come) ^betsy Bing, if you don’t know, is Microsoft’s new search engine, also known as “Decision Engine” since it has features that help answer what you are wondering about rather than just display links. For those wondering about Live Search. I think I read somewhere that both search engines will remain there for a while, then Live...

Microsoft recently opened up there beta of the MyPhone service to the general public. The service syncs your Mobile phone with the web and allows access to your Contacts Calendar tasks, pictures and more. I have just left it running, but you can add stuff to your phone through this interface as well. I see the bonus of this as a backup, which I kinda have with Plaxo.com already for my contacts and calendar, but having your pictures and video up there too is much easier than connecting your phone...
Windows 7 RC (Release Candidate) is out and the incredible thing is that Microsoft has provided this operating system (OS) for free to the entire world. They will only let you download the OS for a limited time – so if you are thinking of getting it – you should be getting your hands on a copy of it as quick as you can. Microsoft is offering both a 32bit or a 64bit version that you can download. This is NOT the final version of the OS though – that is something to be aware of. If you install this...
To Microsoft’s credit their Architecture resources are much improving. The excellent free Architecture Journal and the MSDN Architecture Centre have been going for sometime but I noticed recently that there is a new UK centric Architecture Portal written by the UK DPE Architect Team with the new free monthly Arc Magazine. The first editions of the Arc Magazine tackle the highly logical new buzz ‘Software + Services’ with links to the Microsoft Strategy Software + Services Home Page. I will talk about...

First off, thank you all so much who have attended the very special gathering of dotNETwork user group, Code Camp ‘09, that took place in the British University in Cairo (BUE) during last Thursday and Friday. This has been one of the biggest events I have been talking in, and that was a great honor. Must Say: SORRY! This post was supposed to be published Saturday or Sunday max. I have been busy making a critical decision and was not sure whether to announce it in this post or not. You can find the...
I have installed Windows 7 on “bare metal” on one of my machines. This was a laptop that I work with and it was a very easy install. First off, it was the quickest OS install that I have ever experienced. You can tell that Microsoft spent some significant time working on the performance and quality of the install and bravo to the team that worked on that feature! I also used the 64-bit version of the operating system. More and more people are turning to 64-bit and it is really starting to be the...
For the past ten months, I have been waiting and waiting sometimes patiently and sometimes not so patient for the DreamSpark program to be available to high school students. Back in February with a huge announcement by Bill Gates about the DreamSpark program, I have been waiting. So here's the program: The Microsoft DreamSpark student program www.DreamSpark.com makes available, at no charge, a broad range of development and design software for download. The program is now available to more than 35...

Good grief. Yet another XBOX has failed, this time it’s the new one from last year. The DVD drive stopped spinning up right after the NXE update. Microsoft is footing the bill again and thankfully we have 2 so nobody will have to stop using their Lancers. I made it in just under the 1 year maintenance agreement. But this is by far the least reliable product I have ever owned. It was this same time last year we had failure #3. Technorati Tags: microsoft,xbox...
This is in response to a post by John Viega entitled “Why Microsoft’s free AV won’t matter”. Yes, Microsoft failed with OneCare. But I don’t agree with John on why. (Keep in mind John works for a company that produces AV software, so he is biased, even if he is knowledgeable.) Let’s look at the three major different kinds of anti-virus users. Type A – Anti-What-Now? A large number of consumers don’t care about anti-virus. They might know what it is “sort of”, and they may want to know that their...
I took the certification exam for 70-528 - Web-based Client Development recently and passed it with a score of 785. Passing score is 700. There's a great line up of some Florida speakers coming to the MSDN Developers Conference next month at the Rosen Hotel across from the Convention Center. The line up includes well known Joe Healy and Russ Fustino speaking along with XNA, Silverlight expert Bill Reiss, my fellow co author of the DotNetNuke book, Stan Schultes, Academic Relations Manager for msft, Dan Waters. There are other Florida pro's like Bayer White , Christopher Bennage, and Joe Homnick that I hope I get to meet as well. Hope...
Update Presentation slides and sample are now available. Please click here to find them! Yeah, somehow dotNETwork decided to allow me to show all my psychopath about design and implementation in a session with a very weird long title, “Applying Domain Driven Design on ASP.NET MVC”. Yeah, two unrelated topics. In 2 hours frame, I should be introducing day to day development styles from a different perspective. I had a small talk about the process side of the world. This time we move towards the other...
No problem at all. Microsoft already has plans for a road show to bring the same content that was talked about at the Professional Developers Conference to your local city. They will be in Houston, Orlando, Atlanta, Chicago, Minneapolis, Washington DC, New York, Boston, Detroit, Dallas, and San Francisco in the next couple of months. It's great to see that Orlando, FL is on the list. There are three tracks to choose from. One on cloud services, client and presentation, and tools languages and framework....
Presentation by Anders Hejlsberg. It is 10 years later since they started C# C# 1.0 was about introducing the general concept of managed code. C# 2.0 was about finishing C# 1.0 but didn't have time to do. C# 3.0 is really about radical new thinking in the language - LINQ. They learned a lot about functional programming through this exercise. Today is about C# 4.0. Some of the trends that have shaped their thinking on C# 4.0. I occasionally receive letters sent out to the Industry Executives from the top dogs at Microsoft. I have found this email sent to the IronPython mailing list yesterday, and thought many of you would love someone to share it :). Hello IronPython Community, This is a special release of IronPython designed to work with the Visual Studio 2010 CTP. Having not ever been to the PDC before, only TechEd (x9), MEC (x2) and WWPC (x2), and I am curious to attend my first one. I have also never been to LA before so this should be a double mint of traveling pleasure. I hope I see some celebrities eating ice cream at a sidewalk cafe like in the magazines my wife always reads! :) Plus I love me some Mexican food and there has to be some good stuff in LA! I started up the TweetDeck filter for PDC and there is a lot of traffic and a good buzz going already....
And the official name is… Windows 7. You might be wondering how this is news, but really Windows 7 has been the codename up until Monday when Mike Nash announced that it would be the official name as well. The idea is that Windows 7 will continue on from where Vista left off, but to go back to version numbers instead of years and other off the wall randomness to highlight aspiration. Mike gives the rundown on why the name was decided on his blog, here: http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsvista/archive/2008/10/13/introducing-windows-7.aspx...

So we got a Microsoft Surface machine at Phenomblue a couple weeks back and the tech team freaked, as expected. Everyone from art direction to programmer to business development were all over the machine from the moment we received the thing from Fed Ex. After the quick and rather ravenous un-boxing, the attempt to follow terribly inaccurate documented setup procedures, and ultimately an undocumented trial and error period, we fired up this future box for a test drive. From the first attract application...
Well now you do! I found the Microsoft Student Experience site and on it was HP, Lenovo, and Toshiba products. The prices are discounted for students as well. In addition, you can find software, ZUNE, books, games, and storage devices. I have been pursuing when high school students will be getting the free software that Microsoft promised with the DreamSpark announcement back in February. I finally have been communicating with the team that is in charge of this and I've been told not to announce the release date but only to tell you that it will be soon. Real soon! The distribution will be different from what college students have been doing. The high school computer science teacher must register. The high school administrators/faculty...
Last February, Bill Gates announced a free software giveaway to college university students and high school students as well. Here is what was offered to them: Microsoft developer tools. Visual Studio is the Swiss Army knife of computer programming. These professional-grade products provide a security-enhanced and reliable environment, enabling students to program everything from a cell phone to a robot or to create their own Web page. Students will also be able to invent compelling new gaming content...
Kudos for Microsoft to open up a Research facility amongst the brains that walk around Cambridge, MA. Microsoft’s other research laboratories are located in Redmond, Wash., California’s Silicon Valley, China, India and England. So back in August, I blogged about this site because of my excitement for XNA and Academics. I was hoping to use whatever came on the site with my programming students. Everyone is waiting patiently for content and I know one person who isn't waiting so patiently..... What gives? Technorati Tags: Microsoft, XNA, Academics, Creators Club...
