Windows Vista is scheduled to release in 7 different versions not including server or tablet editions. Wow! This is going to get confusing. So let's see if I can help: Windows Vista Starter Edition, Codename: Goverment mandated, stripped down, nothing to see here edition. Windows Vista Home Basic Edition, Codename: It came with my PC edition. Windows Vista Home Premium Edition, Codename: Media Center just wasn't cool enough edition. Windows Vista Professional Edition, Codename: It came with my MSDN ...
I posted this before for TechEd 2004, but I just wanted to remind everyone as they get ready to fly to LA on Sunday or Monday what they should remember to bring. Here is what I am bringing!: WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING TO PDC 2005: A BIG suitcase. You will be getting a ton of giveaways from PDC. There hasn't been one PDC where I didn't come up with a minimum of five new books. You will also be getting free software, t-shirts, papers, mementos, etc. You will need the space to bring this stuff home so be ...
I recently received Windows “Longhorn” Vista Beta 1 in the mail from my MSDN subscription and decided to install it on one of the extra computers that I have at my house. I have installed “Longhorn” in the past, but I was quite interested to see what has changed in the install process this time around. The install process has changed quite a bit from the last time I installed it. It is a very graphical install process instead of the blue screen DOS style install process that ...

Here is a good msdn video regarding IIS 7.0.  If you have not read or seen anything about IIS 7.0 this may be useful to you.

Microsofts MSDN blogs used to have a terrible feed URL that Bloglines didnt understand, and RssBandit would often run into problems with, but I just noticed that they have really cleaned up their blogging effort. Cudos!MSDN Blogs: http://blogs.msdn.com/rss: http://blogs.msdn.com/MainF... Blogs:http://blogs.technet.... Netherlands has also started blogging: http://blogs.microsoft.nl/rss: http://blogs.microsoft.nl/M... ...

Check out the channel9 video: http://channel9.msdn.com/sh... Of note, check out the cool timeline app thats basically a “proof of concept“ app, but it looks cooler than anything I've ever seen (including those useless but visually stunning 3D GUIs in movies!) This is exciting... WinFS has hit its first Beta, releasing bits to MSDN subscribers. This is something I've personally been waiting/planning for a bit, whereas most of the projects I've been involved with, ...
I'd like to a few minutes to rant here about something for a moment. I read something in the MSDN newsgroups a few days ago that kind of set me off. It was a fairly simple and innocent question. Someone asked if they should turn an existing class library into a web service. What's the harm in asking such a question? In fact, its often asked so what's the big deal, right? Its the fact that this type of question is asked so often which is the problem. My issue is that ever since .Net came out, Microsoft ...
I am amazed how much I like MSDN Blogs (MSDN blogs). The enthusiasm is contagious! Beats the hell out of slashdot!
Treeview is one of the important controls being used in applications to improve the usability experience for users for displaying Hierarchial Data. ASP.NET 1.x versions did not ship with a built-in treeview control as a part of the Web Controls. However Microsoft did release a set of UI Controls including the Treeview, Tabstrip Control etc., collectively called as Microsoft IE Webcontrols. Though Microsoft doesnt support these controls currently (as mentioned in their MSDN Documentation), those controls ...

A good article on operator overloading in Visual Basic.  I (stupidly) never realized that you could overload CType.  Of course that’s necessary in retrospect, because it is the main casting device for VB.  Anyway, the article is here, or in your latest issue of MSDN Magazine.

Last I heard, there were something like 50% of the VB developers out there that were still using VB6 and writing and maintaingn VB6 code. Based on the feedback and uproar of the developer community over the discontinuation of the VB6 support by Microsoft, there are still TONS of folks out there in VB6 land (present company included). Face it there are thousands of companies out there with lots of time and money invested in millions of lines of VB6 code. Can they upgrade it all over night and move ...

I just posted a somewhat lengthy article on my MSDN blog covering Avalon and 3D graphics. I got a little bored yesterday and this is what happens. In a nutshell, I created a mesh exporter for MilkShape that will output the mesh in XAML format that you can then load using Avalon.

Performance is a key factor in deciding the architecture of a system. With distributed applications performance becomes even more key as data is passed between the different layers. Microsoft has seemingly completing technologies in this space so it is very much a mystery on which will be the best technology for a given scenario. A new article on MSDN called Performance of ASP.NET Web Services, Enterprise Services, and .NET Remoting by Ingo Rammer of Thinktecture and Richard Turner of Microsoft examines ...
The new “XBOX Live Experience” that they have been letting us peek at looks like it has a lot of cool new features. In addition to the wireless controllers, the headset cord port is also built into the wireless controller, which is cool... I wonder if anybody's considered BlueTooth for that? Then you could get rid of the headset altogether? I know of at least 3 friends that have a BlueTooth headset for their phone... It would be cool to also be able to use it for Xbox Live... Hell yeah! ...
Regular Expression is a language independent feature supported by many languages, notably PERL, Java, JavaScript, C# etc. The support for Regular Expression is extensive under PERL and thus there is a term coined PCRE (Perl Compatible Regular Expression). .NET has followed the similar pattern writing syntax. The Base Class Library includes a namespace (System.Text.RegularExpress... where a set of classes have been exposed to utilize the power of regular expressions. Summarizing the widely used ...
It seems that all is not well out there in VS2005 Beta 2 land. Clint Stotesbery has called for a vote on the MSDN Product Feedback Center for a Beta 3. In his problem statement he has written “There are still way too many bugs and performance issues. Too many issues get resolved as Postponed. A lot of changes are happenning in the CTPs. I'm guessing not many people are using the CTPs compared to beta 2. Most developers don't have time to play around with a CTP that doesn't have a Go Live license. ...
I have been consistently getting this error message while updating an Access Database from one of my Web Applications at home. Let me give a little background... I developed a Home Accounting Application in .NET a year and half back and have been maintaining my accounts efficiently ever since. Recently, I bought a Desktop with Windows XP professional and deployed the Accounting Software on the new machine. Things were working perfectly fine after a lot of initial hiccups with Norton Antivirus, Zonealarm ...
I'm trying out Mercury Interactive's QuickTest Pro. The recording feature, of course, doesn't do exactly what I'm expecting, so I go to the “expert view” to see the code behind. My first thought is about the IDE. It uses VBScript. The VBScript IDE is not user friendly. It would be prefferable to use Visual Studio with a Mercury extension. Second.... Mercury is not providing any help on their web site. You have to register, and it's for paying customers only. I'm using an evaluation version! ...
So it turns out... the DVD of Vista Beta 1 that I burned earlier was no good. Plain and simple. I burned a second one and this time Virtual PC recognized it right away. That's the good news. The bad news is... now I'm getting the exact same error I was getting with the 64 bit version, which you can see here. I downloaded this: Windows Longhorn Professional Edition Beta 1 (English) from MSDN Downloads. Should I have downloaded this: Windows Longhorn Professional Edition Beta 1 - checked/debug (English) ...

As usual, Dino Esposito does an impeccable job in comparing DataSets and Collections.  You should check out this article.

Cutting Edge: DataSets vs. Collections -- MSDN Magazine, August 2005

We scored anIndigo Roadshow in South Florida, yea! And another in Tampa the week after. So... what is Indigo? Will learn a lot more next week but my take is a big step for Microsoft that represents a maturing of the technology to write distributed applications. You will be able to write distributed applications where pieces talk to each other without knowing much detail of the underlying channel. Details of the channels may change over time or depending on the need or availability. Write once.. communicate ...

Downloaded the SQL Server 2005 June CTP from MSDN over the weekend to install with VS.NET 2005 Beta 2 on a clean XP Pro o/s. As it the June CTP downloaded I installed VS.NET 2005 beta 2 which I already had ready. My mistake. You must install SQL Server 2005 June CTP first as the setup will refuse to run if it detects VS.NET 2005 Beta 2. A lot of uninstalling (about 10 items in add/remove programs) and it's working fine. Now I can find out if VS.NET 2005 and subversion (an open source, source code ...

This may be old news to avid MSDN viewers but I just noticed that there are several *free* training courses for Visual Studio 2005 including Team System.

PEACE!!

This is a great tip from Jason Mauss’ blog if you spend a lot of time downloading from MSDN subscriptions services.
Windows Vista™ Beta 1 is Available to MSDN Subscribers. Only 9 hours to go and I will have my copy downloaded. Also in Vista news here are the links to the Developer Center site and the IT Pro site ...
Ok, honestly… who doesn’t have at least one post by now about Windows Vista Beta 1? First off if you haven’t heard by now the August 3rd date given for MSDN access to the Vista Beta 1 bits wasn’t quite accurate. If by August 3rd they meant July 27th then they were spot on. Really I don’t care. I’m just glad I have the bits today. The rumors and press releases were so back and forth on the whole “date” issue that it doesn’t really surprise me that ...
Thanks to Scoble! A number of us were here in Atlanta for an INETA board meeting and I happened to notice a geek dinner being hosted by Robert Scoble (http://radio.weblogs.com/0... in the Atlanta area. Five of us from the INETA board, Chris Pels, Morgan Baker, Chris Wallace (of Denver), Brian Tinkler and I rented a car and drove to 5 Seasons Brewing. I did not count but there were something like 25 or 30 people piled into the smoking section / bar. The good news is there ...
Well, I’ve been waiting for them to make this available ever since TechEd. They were giving copies away during the lunch session of the DotNetRocks show and since I left during the show I didn’t receive my copy. Since then I’ve been waiting for them to post it to MSDN downloads… like they promised. Well, as of July 15th they have fulfilled that promise. You can download a fully functional copy of VSTS Beta 2 fully configured and ready to test. Honestly I love this idea and ...

[Crosspost from Managed World]

I just came across this article earlier this evening. It is an article about improving Managed DirectX performance. It is written by Tom Miller and is published in the latest MSDN magazine. Enjoy!

My company just let all of their MSDN Universal subscriptions expire and the intern that found us great pricing last time is no longer with the company.  I know a couple years ago we got them for just over $1000 each, but the prices I'm finding now are closer to $2000 each.

So, where do you go to get your MSDN Universal subscriptions?

I was scrolling through MSDN Subscriber downloads, and it looks like the folks in Redmond have another gift for us? I didn't want to copy the whole page, but it looks like last night, a new CTP went up. Will start the download this afternoon, and we'll see. Check it out for yourself! I couldn't post a URL with the way they work the downloads area, all the pages are shown through https://msdn.one.microsoft.... and there's no way (that I can see) to link to the actual download ...

Microsoft Previews Next Release of Customer Relationship Management Solution at Worldwide Partner Conference Microsoft CRM 3.0 to provide a complete CRM suite with the familiar look and feel of Microsoft Office and Microsoft Outlook. All I wanted was to take a numeric string, and increment it. The string happened to be 2 digits long. All I wanted to do was something along the lines of var.ToString().PadLeft(2). So off to google I went, and I finally found my answer, but not in any MSDN documentation. The MSDN docs refer to format strings as if I use them EVERY single day. I don't. I deal with them about once every 3 months, (but this time ... I'm writing it down) I eventually found this method stringVar = intVar.ToString().PadLeft( ...

Just recently I got my notebook's harddisk fried. I don't know what happened to it. Just suddenly stopped working. I had already applied for an extended warranty on my notebook so I got it replaced all for free. HP returned my notebook with an all new bios and cleaned the screen for me, which I always find a pain. It feels so new to me now. I am in love again. Had been downloading software for past two days now. I have the MSDN download subscription, so starting from Windows XP to Visual Studio.NET ...

Last evening, I was trying to write an application which could detect IR Devices from my machine and give its details. I was using VS2005 Beta 2 Winforms. I added System.Net.IrDA.dll from “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\SmartDevices\SDK\CompactF... path. The program is simple, just create an instance of IrDAClient and look for devices using IrDA.DiscoverDevices(int max) which gives an array of IrDADeviceInfo. But to my surprise, when ...
The first day of DevTeach 2005 was dedicated to UG Leaders, the year behind us and the year ahead of us. We got some great news from Julie Lerman of INETA; now we have 5 Canadian liaisons. All 27 .NET user groups in Canada will now have a much better ability to leverage INETA NORAM programs. Overall, I am very happy with the feedback they provided MSDN about the four user groups we did, the user group competition, certification workshops, Canadian speakers bureau and other programs we have in place ...
My spouse is well-trained. Every time I attend an MSDN Event, the first thing she asks is if they handed out a free t-shirt. I had to tell her that there were no shirts this time. She was disappointed. She was again bummed when I told her the Microsoft pen was black ink. She is a blue ink fiend, and a connoisseur of pens. She got excited, though, that I had picked up two of the Microsoft notepads. She loves to use them for shopping lists. Naturally, she is tough to please. Today, Russ Fustino gave ...
I have been working with BizTalk Server since BizTalk 2000 and decided that it was about time that I started sharing my experiences with the product. I just published a whitepaper on MSDN with a lot of input from the product team. http://msdn.microsoft.com/l... Enjoy ...
Well, now that I'm back from Tech Ed, it's time to look back through my notes and start writing down my thoughts on what I did and what I saw. I'm starting that right now, but I wanted to get some things out there first. While the technical content at Tech Ed is awesome, I'm debating if the content was better than the people you get to meet and interact with. I'm not sure. I think I've made a few contacts that could potentially be life long relationships. That's more important than the technology ...
Has anyone else out there grown disenchanted with the current state of the blogoshpere? I took 10 of what I consider some of the most popular blogs out there such as Don Box, Scott Hanselman, Joel Spolsky, Ingo Rammer, Martin Fowler, etc and read each of their 10 most recent posts. Only 12 pertained to something I was interested in and /or currently working on. I think that about 50% of the posts pertain to something that I may be working on 12 or 18 months from now and the 40% is just a repost of ...

There's a new benchmark article on MSDN about xml performance in .NET2.0

Seems like some magician came by and fixed the xml-engine to run about three times faster :-) (awesome)

It's great to see the Microsoft XML-team making such effort to tune the XMLspeed.
