For those of you using Gmail and the integrated Gmail chat client you could be affected by this bug if access to the Google talk server is blocked by a firewall or another method. The past 2 weeks I noticed that Gmail is using 100% of one of my processors when I am at the office. Access to the Google talk servers is blocked at our firewall so my Gmail integrated chat client is disabled when in Gmail, at least that is what Gmail tells me. See the attached picture on the right. However, when the integrated ...

One of the sessions I did in St. Louis Day of .NET is about Intermediate WPF. It seems to be one that people seem to have liked, so I’m making the materials available here first for those that may be interested in playing around with it. The overview description was made before the material is done, and I was not able to show 3D graphics within the sample; my apologies. In any case, there’s really no text out there that defines what is Intermediate WPF; so I just created one . The session goes through ...
ClickOnce is a fascinating technology which you get right out of your Visual Studio IDE. For those unfamiliar with ClickOnce, it’s basically a deployment technology which allows developers to publish their windows-based application to a webserver or network share. Any updates to the application can easily be deployed to the client. You can read more here. I’ve been using the technology with almost all my project deployment. This time around I had to change my strategy a bit. Basically our network ...
Wednesday the 2nd, well spent most of the day at Work Scours, taking tests to see if I qualify for grant to take classes for a CCNA. I passed but, boy was my mind tired. Found an interesting news article on Inside Tech, called Stalk Your Way to a New Job. “Interested in a company and need to find a person to contact? Google away. Trying to suss out the guy who’s interviewing you next week? Facebook him!” I used it to find a person I knew at company, I used to work at and found his Email. Also found ...
It is a known fact that IE attempts to sniff out the mime type of files as they are downloaded. That is, IE checks the extension of the file, the content type, etc to try to determine if there is an application on the client PC that has been configured as the default for that type of file. So, when downloading a file with a .txt extension, it would offer to open the file with Notepad, or Excel if the file had a .csv extension. This is fine most of the time. But, occasionally, developers may want ...

Yes I know it's been a while since I blogged about my *favorite* development tool... but that's only because I haven't had to touch it! That smooth series of events was shattered yesterday with me experiencing the Thrill of Victory and Agony of Defeat in multiple cycles... and as you can guess it involved Crystal Reports. So here's the deal... I'm working inside what a fellow developer called a 'Draconian' environment. .NET 2.0 is the 'standard' although I installed 3.5 SP1 on this box (and either ...
Well, I crashed and burned tonight. I knew the information, but I had one small problem, that kept my demo from working. I added the SchemaNameConvention to the Data project for handling database schemas, and added it to the Fluent NHibernate conventions list. I SHOULD NOT, however, have changed the code for getting the Id of the domain objects. What this does, is it looks at the object and determines, by domain signature attributes, which property mappings need to be mapped as an Id not a property. ...
When you create a new Silverlight project, VStudio asks you to add web site project to host that Silverlight application, that’s great and a time saver: Visual Studio creates for you a new web project that contains the SL XAP application inside a folder called ClientBin, each time you make changes in your SL project and compile that XAP on the web project will get updated. So far so good… but what happens when you want to add more Silverlight projects and linked them to the current existing web project? ...
At Google, we like to reflect the ever-changing world of our users through the logo designs on our homepage. These ‘doodles’ celebrate scientists, artists, local events or special dates and are designed by our original doodler, 31-year-old, Dennis Hwang. We’re now giving you a chance to design a doodle for us, through our doodle competition, Doodle 4 Google. If you are currently a student in any school in India (between the 1st and 10th standards), then this is your chance to have your doodle be ...
As many of us are aware, hosted exchange providers are popping up everywhere...and with good reason as there are tremendous benefits to this model. There are two models of hosted exchange. The first one has been in existence for a long time and is also referred to as managed exchange server. Essentially this is a dedicated Exchange server or server farm that serves only one organization. Many large entities have been using this model for ages through providers like Ceryx (winner of Microsoft’s 2008 ...
I didn’t leave work until 8PM this evening. I was wrestling with a JavaScript/JQuery problem and it became a personal battle to bend this application to my will. (Maybe in some future post I’ll talk about how horrible that is.) So I didn’t get it before I left, but I came home and started hitting it here on a test project. There seems like there are probably some scripting conflicts in our project (we have the JQuery stuff and prototype in there), so it didn’t take be but about a half-hour at home ...

I have switched from Google to Bing and am liking what I see. If you are still hesitant to make the switch try out this site where you can see the results from both with every search you do. www.bing-vs-google.com/
I have to admit I use "Google" as a verb. However, using "Bing" as a verb ... hmmm... not so sure on that yet.
I recently needed to create a web service to provide coastal tidal predictions, i.e., the low tide and high tide times for a given day at a given location. The Web Service I decided to forego a traditional “web service” and provide a calendar feed (using iCalendar data format) instead. This approach allows devices such as an iPod Touch (or iPhone), as well as most internet-aware calendar programs, to grab and display the data on a calendar – perfectly appropriate for this kind of information. Internet-based ...
It is interesting to hear about a new competitors in the space of lightweight operating system for browsing internet. By the hype created by the media, most of the people in the world already heard about Google Crome OS. But many people don’t know about the other competitors in the same space. Many people might not know about the Microsoft project called “Gazelle”. Like Chrome OS, which is built on top of Linux, Gazelle isn’t really a new operating system. Rather it is a layer that extends the browser’s ...
Simplified (Inaccurate) Background About OpenID Some websites allow you instead of registering and logging-in (meaning re-entering the same information you entered before in so many other sites), to enter what is called Open ID URL, which is a URL given by a another website that you already logged in and has your information (called OpenID provider). Once you enter the URL and continue, you get redirected to the OpenID provider confirmation page whether you want to be able to login to the new website ...
The ease at which anyone can build a personal brand is one of the most profound implications of web-based social networking. Thanks to the advent of ubiquitous (and free) social networking applications, everyone in the world is limited only by their imagination on how to go about building their own personal brand. Keep in mind that your goal in building an online personal brand is to enable people to quickly determine your credibility, and what they can expect to consume from you when they come across ...

I finally installed the Apple iPod Touch 3.0 software update and, to my surprise, my iPod has been greatly improved. I chose the word surprise because Apple has disappointed me (and the rest of the world) twice in the past, and I made the assumption they would disappoint again. You see, the iPod Touch is a nice little computer, disguised as a music player, with WiFi built-in. You would certainly expect it to be able to: Sync music with no wires Download audio and video podcasts from the internet ...
Some time ago I wrote a post No Copy Constructor support in .Net framework. and was adviced by Tim Hibbard to use reflection like this. I've created Copy method to copy Fields(not only properties, and found that the private fields of any base class are not copied. The article Where are my fields? « Andrew Smith explains that it's required to iterate base classes. But when looking in the Google for the solution,I've found the suggestion for serializable objects: MemberInfo [] sm = FormatterServices ...

This is very disappointing after all the hype!! Really all Google have done is put a new face on a simple Linux Distro.
It’s only purpose is to run Chrome..and not any other apps.
Now I know the clever thinkers believe this is the way to go – just the home market is not ready yet!!!!
Hi all , I recently was working with a client that implemented a telerik navigation control as a quicklaunch. They decided to split up all the sub-sites into their own site collection. They wanted to place quotas on subs sites, and if you don't know, you can only set quotas on site collections and not sub sites. This switch or splitting of sites posed some interesting problems. 1) Telerik Control now needed to be added to each sub site for navigation. The control specifics were added to a master ...

I wanted to write a blog post to document how I do some day-to-day things. It helps me to keep track of my work habits, refine them and perhaps help some others who are looking for some solutions. My current rig is a Apple MacBook Pro 13” unibody. It has the 250Gb drive with 4Gb memory. I am running the latest version of OS X Leopard. I am really enjoying the 13” form factor. It is a little smaller and lighter than the previous 15” unibody which, to me, just felt heavy. I also don't notice the lost ...
Today the news about Google coming out with its own operating system "Chrome" is all over the Internet and I was wondering can they make an in-road into the OS field which is basically been dominated by Microsoft for decades. And the answer to that is possibly yes, if not as a full fledge OS for desktops and servers but for portable devices. There are 2 things that I hate most about windows OS first it takes forever to boot the OS, since I had SP1 installed on my Vista it takes more than 5 minutes ...
Scripting Perfmon We have a test team in India that I would like to run some load and performance testing. They have access to the required test server and load tools but limited experience using tools such as perfmon. In this particular case I didn't have access to the test server to enable me to manually configure the logging, and I know ...

Bing is a new search engine from Microsoft that has been released exactly one month ago. During this month it has created a lot of buzz. Bing is advertised by Microsoft to be a “Decision Engine” and it seems like there is a general feel, or at least enquiry, about bing constituting serious competition to Google search. After reading Scott Hanselman’s recent blog post comparing Lenovo’s ThinkPad W700 with the W500, I decided to give bing a little try. Google VS. Bing I decided to use google-vs-bing.com ...
At ConvergeSC 2009, an attendee asked me to describe how to prevent crawlers from trolling your ADO.NET Data Service. I explained as best as I could, but I felt like a blog post might make it more clear. To a bot, your data service looks like any other site on the web. Sure, it’s reading either Atom, POX, JSON, or some other bizarre format you’ve concocted, but it’s still data coming down through http and discoverable via links. There are ways to prevent a bot from crawling, but information available ...

I was working with one of the web application localization. I was searching with couple of translator's available with the web. The most popular of them are 1. Google Translation Service 2. Bing Translator Service I tried using the Google API for the web and it was pretty good. Then in recent times I came across Bing translator and tools link in them gave me the way to implement the Bing API. Bing is making a revolution in the search engines and so I liked to use that here. Both Mobile Safari (in iPhone OS 3.0) and Google Android now both support getting the location of the current user. How cool is that. Finally mobile web-pages can be location aware. It's been one week since I've started really focusing on what I've been eating and my lifestyle. My interest was piqued two weeks ago when the health center part of the company I work at mentioned a summer 'Healthy Lifestyle' program where you would follow a table of things to do every day for a month (with 3 calendars for 3 months) and get points for each item you do on the list each day, at the end the most points would win prizes. The items on this calendar range from getting 30 minutes of exercize ...

Very impatient, moderately lazy; I use the keyboard to do whatever I can whether I’m in Visual Studio, navigating the web, or just moving around the O/S. For example, if I need to launch word I’m just going to hit the Windows Key + R and then type WinWord. I use that technique for basically anything I know the application name for…notepad, calc, whatever. If the application name is “too much” for me to type I’ll create a real old-skool bat file and throw it into my C:/Windows/System32/ folder. A ...
Last night, I got around to investigating the new Web Slice functionality in IE8. I browsed to http://uk.msn.com/ and found various slices in the home page. I installed the 'News' slice and then clicked on the button in my Favourites Bar...to be greeted by a rude message saying that "Internet Explorer cannot display the web page". Bemused, I went binging and soon discovered that Google Gears and Web Slices don't play nicely together. Unfortunately, this wasn't the answer. I don't have Google Gears ...
So...there isn't really any denying that there is a lot to learn. New releases from MS, new tools from third-party provides, new libraries..whatever it may be. It's pretty unrealistic, at least with my current brain, to be able to learn all of that stuff while still having any kind of a life. Sure, I squeeze in a book on the subway, and my idea of goofing-off at work is going to DotNetKicks.com and checking out what's late and great in .NET today. That all said, I suspect it may be at least as important ...

As promised, what is my verdict after using BingUK for a week? To be perfectly honest it’s been distinctly unremarkable … and this is a good thing for Microsoft! BingUK is lacking the killer features that the US version has, the ‘get out’ for the UK version is that it’s still in Beta and will be for sometime. So perhaps BingUK is still more of a search engine than a decision engine at the moment. So how does it compare with Google? Well to be honest, it didn’t use Google much in the first place only ...
Last week, i.e. in a single week, Microsoft was on real tear: the company announced a release date for Windows 7, disclosed details of Zune HD and Zune’s integration into Xbox Live, discussed Project Natal and other coming improvements to Xbox, and launched its Bing “decision” engine. And all this week, at a special software design review (SDR) event, Microsoft is introducing major new business intelligence features coming in SQL Server 2008 R2, including its project Gemini product that helps rogue ...
I own a mac, I'm a fan of macs, but I'm not a mac-fanboy. I think they're bloody great machines, and that OSX is by far the best OS out there, but I appreciate they're not for everyone. Even osx has (cue dramatic pause) .. flaws. Copy a folder somewhere in OSX, and if the folder already exists on the destination it will prompt you to entirely replace that folder - WOT NO MERGE?! Anyway, apart from that minor niggle, OSX is awesome, especially for web development (in rails). So where am I going with ...
