I updated my Eris to Android’s 2.1 OS last night and everything went pretty well. I had wanted to update the phone mainly for two reasons. The first was to have the Navigation feature of the Google Maps application and to make YouTube work again. YouTube used to work on the phone and then stopped a few weeks ago. But before I started I looked around various forums and blogs to see what doom and gloom folks were talking about the update. Based on what I read and some common sense I used the following ...
Yesterday, Microsoft held its flagship launch event for Office 2010 in Manhattan. Today, the Redmond software company is holding a local launch event for Visual Studio (VS) 2010, in Brooklyn. How come information workers get the 212 treatment and developers are relegated to 718? Well, here’s the thing: the Brooklyn Marriott is actually a great place for an event, but you need some intimate knowledge of New York City to know that. NBC’s Studio 8H, where the Office launch was held yesterday (and from ...

Someone asked me to compare Silverlight / HTML development. I realized that the question can be answered in many ways: Below is the high level comparison between a HTML /JavaScript client and Silverlight client and why silverlight was chosen over HTML / JavaScript client (based on type of users and major functionalities provided): 1. For end users Browser compatibility Silverlight is a plug-in and requires installation first. However, it does provides consistent look and feel across all browsers. ...
The week of April 26th was a huge one in the world of mobile and tablet devices, There were so many individual developments, announcements and solidifications of strategy, it’s almost impossible to believe they occurred in the same month, let alone the same week. Things started with Apple and Gizmodo having a Law and Order moment over the latter’s procurement of what appears to be the former’s 4th gen iPhone prototype. We found out on the 26th that Gizmodo blogger Jason Chen’s apartment was raided ...
In this NHibernate tutorial, I'll be digging into the ID tag and Generator classes. I had originally planned on finishing up a series on relationships (parent/child, etc.) but felt this would be an interesting topic for folks, and I also wanted to start integrating some of the current NHibernate reference. Since this article also includes some reference sections (and since I have not had a chance to check for every possible parameter value), I used the current reference as a baseline, and would welcome ...
During one of my last semesters in college we were required to take a class call Computer Graphics which tried (quite unsuccessfully) to teach us a combination of mathematics, OpenGL, and 3D rendering techniques. The class itself was horrible, but one little gem of an idea came out of it. See, the final project in the class was to team up and create some kind of demo or game using techniques we learned in class. My friend Paul and I teamed up and developed a top down shooter that, given the stringent ...

So, tonight I took some time to mash up some graphics for my game menu screen. My artistic talent sucks...but here goes nothing...voila, my menu screen!! The Menu Screen The screen above is displaying 4 sprites, even though it looks like maybe 7... I guess one of the first things for me to test in the future is ... is it more memory efficient (and better frame rate) to draw one big background image OR tp paint the screen black, and place each sprite in set locations? To display the 4 sprites above, ...
Recently, on a software development forum, a person who shall remain nameless posted the following Hi, Is there good material available on the net/elsewhere for the following topics? 1. Transitioning an Organisation to Scrum 2. Scrum Team Dynamics Thanks Name Withheld to protect the guilty Of course one of the first answers the nameless one got was a link to LetMeGoogleThatForYou http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Transi... Yay! Today I'm going to get into some code! My mind has been on this all day! I find it amusing how I practice, daily, to be "in the moment" or "present" and the excitement and anticipation of this project seems to snatch it away from me frequently. WELL!!! (Shakes Excitedly) Let's do this =)! Let's code! For these next few days it is my intention to better understand image rendering using XNA; after said prototypes are complete I should (fingers crossed) be able to dive into my game code using the ...
So yesterday I didn't cut any code for my game but I was able to do a tiny bit of research on the XNA Game Development Technology and the communities out there and do you know what? I feel I'm a bit closer to my goal. The bad news is today I didn't cut code either. However, not all is lost because I wanted to get my ideas on paper and today I just did that. Today, I began to jot down notes about the game and how I felt the visual elements would interact with each other. Unlike my workplace, my personal ...

I am really missing the tools in wordpress, that seem to be absent from GeeksWithBlogs [GWB].

The biggest two are being able to store drafts and being able to set a publish date.

I have done a little research on google I have not been able to find anyone saying that they have used Wordpress as a client for GWB, let alone a how-to.

Anyone got any clues or suggestions?

Just as a disclaimer, the views and opinions expressed in this post are solely my own and I’m not getting paid or compensated for anything. Ok, so I’m one of the crazy few who went out and bought a Droid the week it was released a few months back. The Motorola Droid was a MAJOR upgrade in phone capabilities for me as my previous phone had no GPS, no web access, limited apps, etc. I now use my Droid for so much of my life from work to personal to community based events. Since I’ve been using my Droid ...

I have recently started writing another book. The topic of this book is ASP.NET MVC. This book differs from my previous book in that rather than working towards building one project from end to end – this book will demonstrate specific topics from end to end. It is a recipe book (hence the cookbook name) and will be part of the Packt Publishing cookbook series. An example recipe in this book might be how to consume JSON, creating a master /details page, jquery modal popups, custom ActionResults, ...
This past Monday, April 12th, Visual Studio 2010 was launched. And on that same day, Microsoft also launched a new line of mobile phone handsets, called Kin. The two product launches are actually connected, but only by what they do not have in common, and what they commonly lack. On the former point: VS 2010 had released to manufacturing a couple weeks prior to its launch. The Kin phones, meanwhile are not yet available. We don’t even know what they will cost. (And I think cost will be a major factor ...
This is the second in a series of tutorials I am working on to help developers quickly get up to speed with NHibernate. In this tutorial, I'll be focusing on an implementation of a repository pattern. As always, comments, suggestions, and any technical bits I may have missed are always appreciated! You can view the entire article via this Google Docs link: http://docs.google.com/Doc?... Enjoy! -Bob ...
Today I came across a wierd issue in a Visual Studio 2008 Code Coverage Analysis. Consider the following method: private IController GetController<T>(ICon... context) where T : IController, new() { IController controller = new T(); controller.ListeningContext = context; controller.Plugin = this; return controller; } This method is called in a unit test as follows (MenuController has an empty constructor): controller = plugin.GetController<Men... After calling this method ...
I am not an Apple fanboy, nor have I ever been. However, I have owned a Mac, an iPod, and an iPhone in my lifetime, and for more than a decade, I have defended Apple against the untruths that the haters so enjoy spewing. I encouraged my wife to buy a MacBook when she needed a new laptop two years ago, and I often recommend them to my friends and relatives. I have proudly and happily used my first generation iPhone for nearly three years. Now, for the first time in well over ten years, I find myself ...
When I first learned NHibernate, I could best describe the experience as less of a learning curve and more like a learning cliff. A large part of that was the availability of tutorials. In this first of a series of articles, I will be taking a crack at providing people new to NHibernate the information they need to quickly ramp up with NHibernate. For the first article, I've decided to address the gap of just giving folks enough code to get started. No UI, no fluff - just enough to connect to a database ...
Saturday morning, I got up, got dressed and took a 7-minute walk up to the Apple Store in New York’s Meatpacking District to pick up my reserved iPad. This precinct, which borders Greenwich Village (where I live and grew up) was, when I was a kid, a very industrial and smelly neighborhood during the day and a rough neighborhood at night. So imagine my sense of irony as I walked up Hudson Street towards 14th Street, to go wait in line with a bunch of hipsters to buy an iPad on launch day. Numerous ...
What if you could work on anything you wanted? Redgate is doing an experiment of sorts this week. Called Down Tools Week. The idea is that they stopped working on their regular projects for a week and strike out on something that catches their attention and drives their passion. Evidently in many cases, these projects have turned out to be new features in their existing products that individual were interested in, some were internal iniatives and some where evidently off the wall new ideas. Today ...
For those of you who missed the chat today, here is the raw transcript. By raw, I mean that I copied and pasted the discussion without any edits. Topic: nServiceBus is mature and powerful open source framework that enables to design robust, scalable, message-based, service-oriented architectures. Latest improvements in the configuration API enables developers to quickly get started and build a working simple system that uses messaging infrastructure. The goal of this session is to give a jump start with the framework, introduce basic concepts such as message handlers, Sagas, Pub/Sub, Generic Host and also create a working demo application ...
This past weekend I attended SharePoint Saturday Michigan (SPSMI) in Ann Arbor, Michigan. For those unfamiliar, SharePoint Saturday is a community driven event where various speakers gather to present at a FREE conference on all topics related to SharePoint. This made my third SharePoint Saturday attended and second I’ve spoken at. I believe today it was announced that about 210 people total attended the event. I was very happy with the turnout, especially the ratio of male to female attendees. Typically ...

After long time, once again started blogging. This time i planned to go with www.geekswithblogs.net.  Reason behind this decision is quality of the articles written in this site. Whenever i google for some solution, i will definitely get a link from this site. Please wish me to have nice time with blogging. All your comments on my future topics are more appreciable.

This is one of the scary problems that turns out to have a pretty easy solution. I tried to view one of my websites hosted by IIS on my primary workstation and the site wouldn’t render. I checked IIS Admin and the site was there, but I couldn’t access it on either port 443 or port 80. In reviewing the event log I found the following entry: The World Wide Web Publishing Service (WWW Service) did not register the URL prefix http://x.x.x.x:80/ for site 1. The site has been disabled. The data field contains ...
Preamble: In an attempt to keep an ageing mind alive I have decided to write an iPhone web app. The app will pull together a whole host of disciplines and should be a challenge. The App: Over the last month or so I have been playing around with Google maps and Instead (see InstaMapper.com) so decided the app must build on this learning. Looking to create an Uber-where’s Tigger! Framework: After an exhaustive research period I’m going with JQTouch. tPhone Simulator: MobiOne More to follow later…… ...
So I was working on an intro to development demo for the Central NJ .Net User Group and I found a few kinks. I opened up a form to custom in InfoPath and Quick Published it wouldn’t work. I imed my InfoPath guru friend, Lori Gowin, she said try to run a regular publish. The form was still not showing up in SharePoint. I could open it and it knew my changes, but it would just not render in a browser. So I decided to create a form from scratch without using the button customize form in the list. That ...
So Here I am talking with my Program lead, about technology, and how while my father is the VP of a major company, he still doesn't have a blackberry, or a smart phone. and I think it's funny. Most people would say it's a generational thing. That because he's older, he dosen't accept technology, and that's why. I have trouble swallowing that because this is the same man, who bought a satellite radio for his car, and made sure that the printer for the house was networked so that his and my mom's laptop ...
Right now they are ‘free’ but it is clear what the path forward is: 4.3 Advertising. The Service currently does not include advertising in the maps images. However, Google reserves the right to include advertising in the maps images provided to you through the Service, but will provide you with ninety (90) days notice prior to the commencement of advertising in the maps images. Such notice may be provided on relevant Google websites, including but not limited to the Google Geo Developers Blog and ...
Today at the Unversity of Washington, Steve Ballmer gave a speech on Microsoft’s cloud strategy. Significantly, Azure was only briefly mentioned and was not shown. Instead, Ballmer spoke about what he called the five “dimensions” of the cloud, and used that as the basis for an almost philosophical discussion. Ballmer opined on how the cloud should be distinguished from the Internet.as well as what the cloud will and should enable. Ballmer worked hard to portray the cloud not as a challenger to Windows ...
Last Wednesday, after many UPS delivery failures, I received P90X in the mail. P90X is a series of DVD's and a nutrition guide you use to shed pounds and gain muscle. Odds are you've seen the infomercial on TV at some point if you watch a little tube now and again. I started last Thursday and am still standing to tell this tale. At it's core, P90X is a 12 DVD set of exercise videos. Each video is comprised of a different workout routine that typically last around an hour (some up to 1 1/2 hours). ...
UPDATE (2011-01-28): ASP.NET MVC 3 I have a newer blog post that shows how to get Client Side Validation Summary without doing any of this. I will still be answering questions and supporting this for developers who are still using ASP.NET MVC 2. If you are on ASP.NET MVC 3, go here. Problem The MicrosoftMvcJQueryValidatio... script file, which integrates with the jQuery Validation Plugin, does NOT populate validation errors inside the Validation Summary control. I will show you how to populate validation ...
Technorati Tags: ASP.NET,General I often see questions at forums(http://forums.asp.net) asking stuffs like: Where to begin? Where Do I start? How to Get Started? So I decided to write this "boring" post to express my opinion and hopefully this can help beginners find their way to get started with ASP.NET. Based on my experience learning ASP.NET is just like learning how to play a guitar.. (oh really? why could I say that? ).(1) First you must have this what we call "interest" because if you don't, ...
I had an interesting scenario where a bunch of memory leaks were showing up. I googled around and found a bunch of issues. I'm sure if you are reading this, you have either just started the search or have been to every blog post about memory leaks. This might be a bit repetative but if you are in the first group that just started maybe this is a nice way to point you in the right direction. You are probably experiencing errors that start like this: "Potentially excessive number of SPRequest objects ...
Alex Sorokoletov writted a post explaining how to use Silverlight 4 with the release candidate version of VS 2010. I'll keep waiting for the release candidate of Silverlight 4. But for those who wants to try, there's the Alex's post translated to English: Silverlight 4 + VS 2010 RC (Translated with Google from Russian) ...
I'm here at PyCon 2010 in Atlanta. One of the pervasive themes (other than improving Python performance and testing which are very good pursuits IMO) is the recurring, omni-annoying "The Web is the New Operating System" concept that the .com busters (who failed us so miserably in the 90s) just love to espouse. The Web is a lot of things to a lot of people. If you asked 10 people what they thought "The Web" really means, you would probably get several very distinct answers, depending on their experiences ...
This is more of a short rant than anything. For the most part I like Bing. Once in a while I still find I get better results from Google. The main thing I find myself missing that I had with Google is the blog search feature. All to often I can filter out a lot of garbage just by using that option. So my request is “when will Bing implement blogsearch”? del.icio.us Tags: Bing,Google, blogsearch ...
All you tech addicts out there must be following the MWC 2010 keenly enough. But today (tonight for me in India) is a night I've been waiting eagerly. Kind of with the same teeny excitement with which we awaited the disappointing iPad. Tonights the night when my infidelities with WinMo may come to an end. I am sorry WinMo, yes I admit I was dating the iPhone OS, and Android lately. But you are to blame partly for it. Tonight I'll see if we could settle scores. Lets see what WinMo 7 err Windows Phone ...
These days, I’m doing a bit of end-to-end acceptance web testing using the Selenium framework. Selenium has a nice and handy add-on for the Firefox browser – the Selenium IDE. It automatically records your actions and produces the required C# code for you, as you click around in the browser window. But when I started the Selenium server and tried to run my first test (copied from the Selenium docs), it didn’t work (Sigh. It never works on the first try…) and I got a timeout and an exception. This ...
…or an excuse to write about my cool new phone. I got a new phone this past week. One which I think is really cool, but before I talk about it, I want stroll through the previous cell phones I’ve owned. Almost nine years ago, my wife and I bought a pair of cell phones. These were our first phones, and the excuse to get them was that my wife was pregnant with our first child at the time. We thought it might be useful to have cell phones so she could get a hold of me if or when something was up. The ...

A short while ago I became a REAL game developer with the release of an XBLIG I helped create called “Kissy Poo”. Overall this game has been a huge success. It has far exceeded my original expectations of sales and was just a really fun project to work on. (In case you were wondering I was expecting to sell around 500 copies and we’re right now hanging around 1200 copies sold!). Now though, I want to take some time to reflect a bit and share what went well and what I would have done differently. ...
I am both a Google docs and Windows SkyDrive user, one thing however that I am always thought would help, especially with SkyDrive, as its essentially a backup tool for me is being able to access through Windows explorer (or FTP would suffice!). Well I have found a little app that does just that!! It’s from Gladinet and the catch line is “Delivering cloud services to your desktop and operating system”, it does connect to other things like Azure blob store and Amazon. You can download a free version ...
Note: This article is a continuation of the series on IJoinedFilter: IJoinedFilter AutoMapFilter meet IJoinedFilter In-lining mapping and injection aspects – yuck! After implementing several aspects of controller actions as compos-able filters, it became apparent that controlling the order would be import. One of the latest additions is a filter to build up a view model property with data aspects. An example would be a select list for states on a person edit view. Normally, the states would be fetched ...
On January 7th 2010 I kicked off a survey on Cloud Computing and the Windows Azure Platform (Now closed). I promised to share the results which I will do over four posts. This is the third of those four. Part 1: Is Cloud relevant? Part 2: How well do you know the technologies of Microsoft, Amazon, Google and SalesForce? Part 3: What are your plans for using the Windows Azure Platform? Part 4: My analysis Which of these Windows Azure Platform technologies have you already evaluated or plan to evaluate ...
