arghh ... that is what I said when one of my senior ask me to work on system.reflection and the moment when I google this query I start crying becuase there is not much help available on internet. so I got disappointed but blieve me reflection is not that difficult really. Please check the new artcile of asp.net 2.0 category for more information about System.Reflection check the followig link http://geekswithblogs.net/a... cheers. ...
I've posted an article that shows how to create an Google Earth KML file by writing to the response stream. The code is for this page: http://timhibbard.com/demo/... That page creates a KML file that show Memorial Stadium in Google Earth. The code also shows how to use query strings to create a KML file for any location like this page: http://www.timhibbard.com/d... Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Read the article ...
AJAXThough it’s simply a combination of relatively mature technologies, AJAX, or Asynchronous JavaScript and XML, is emerging as a popular industry solution that allows developers to combine existing web technologies to create highly interactive and responsive web interfaces. AJAX as a technology has been around for quite some time, it is the name that is new. Microsoft’s Outlook Web Access is a good example of the technology in use, before it had a name. The name AJAX was coined by Adaptive ...
On recommendation from Jeff, I'm trying out NewsGator. After 12 hours of use, this is what I think: Love the mobile app. The interface is pretty and smart. It marks my items read on the server side, so I don't read posts twice. It also allows me to "clip" a feed, so that I can look at it later from the computer. The app is a bit buggy though and often just exits. The NewsGator Online is ok. Nothing special except that I can see how many people subscribe to a particular feed. It's a little slow, but ...
So I just realized that keeping a simple password on my AIM account, which I rarely use, is a bad thing, since someone put a new icon on my profile...8 tries at 3 personal questions later, password was secure. While I was there, on AIM Today, I decided to check out what is going on with the company that I have despised for years. I click on email and logged in, didn't know I even had an email account with my screen name. I started pocking around - “great built-in AJAX calendar there” ...
In August, the Google Reader Blog posted a list of the most commonly used extensions in feeds. Here is my list of the top 10 most useful extensions for syndication: 10. iTunes This one really shouldn't even be on this list, but I include it because it did make a big splash when it was released. It also generated a lot of frustration and anger amoung podcast producers. The iTunes namespace extension was created to allow podcast feed producers to integrate their feeds with Apple's iTunes music player. ...
Geo-Names has released a utility that will scan an RSS feed for geographical content and spit out a GeoRSS feed. So you can grab the RSS feed for this blog and convert it to GeoRSS. Since Where's Tim understands GeoRSS, you can view the geographical data of my feed in relation to my current location here. You can also use the same utility to spit out KML and view the data in Google Earth ...
I have had trouble in the past when installing the Exchange System Manager (ESM) on my laptop so I can modify email information about a user in Active Directory Users and Computers (ADUC). I get conflicts with Outlook (some shared or overwritten DLLs I imagine) or in the case of Outlook 2007 Beta 2, outright consistent crashes. I found this article by Jim McBee on how to copy just the needed DLLs from an Exchange server to the workstation in question. The page isn't available on his site for some ...
A friend of mine pointed me to this today and I got a kick out of it. Having a bad day behind the keyboard? Watch this and realize it could be worse. :-) EDIT: It looks like Google Video killed this one. You can see it on YouTube here. Weird Al- White and Nerdy ...
Since I originally posted this in July, I've gotten absolutely nowhere with Microsoft. I have, however, had a couple hundred google searches for things like “IE7 beta process.start error“. Since then my bug was closed, someone else reopened it, and I've found another similar bug where the IE7 beta and RC take over shell execute and deny programs from being launched. Luckily for me, our workaround was to simply not use the shell (ShellExecute=false) but that definitely isn't an option ...
A colleague asked me what blogs I read, and I thought it would be interesting to blog about that ;-) My main activities in programming in the moment are .NET, especially ASP.NET, and WPF. ASP.NET also includes a lot of JavaScript programming, which was always one of my favourite subjects anyway. About JavaScript, I don't read blogs, but I can recommend the newsgroup comp.lang.javascript. I learned most of my JavaScript there over the years, and though the tone is sometimes passionate over what may ...
Over the last few weeks I’ve been on leave enjoying a much deserved rest if I do say so myself. This year the wife and I decided to not get on a plane and head for foreign climbs purely because neither of us fancied facing the new airport security restrictions and the weather here has been amazingly good so why not have a holiday at home in the UK? I ask you, where is the fun in not being able to take 100 weight of books, booze, food and that cool gadget you’ve just brought from Dixon ...
I run an old DotNetNuke 2.11 website that uses the NTForums module from Active Modules, Inc. NTForums is actually outdated and the current product has be rebranded as Active Forums. Active Forums supports DNN 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 4.0, and 4.3. The only reason I haven't installed the upgrade yet is that I keep having trouble with the DNN upgrade itself (not the module upgrade). Last night I had some trouble with a sql injection (fun times!). Luckily, the injected script was basically harmless, just annoying. ...
Another example of creating a mashup with RSSBus with just a little bit of code: FeedMapper. Lots of services let you plot individual items on maps. Some even let you plot multiple items on maps. But I don't know of any that let you plot any feed (with georss data, that is) on a map. Taking advantage of feeds with georss data in them, FeedMapper will plot events contained within the feed on a Virtual Earth, Google Earth, or Yahoo map (Yahoo mapping only works in Firefox). Update: Where's Tim lets ...

I was looking for a nice diagram I could print showing the ASP.NET Page Life Cycle and I found on Google a diagram drawn by Léon Andrianarivony:

My ASP.NET application calls web services( including Google Web API) and it is a requirement to access it through Proxy Server that requires Authentication. It works correctly with Microsoft ISA server (see my post Set defaultProxy configuration Element for Proxy Server) . But it didn't work with Squid proxy server Authentication. When I specified useDefaultCredentials=true, the WebException returned : “HTTP status 417: Unknown“.After some investigation I found that 417 is actually Expectation failed ...
A couple of days ago I was asked if there was any way by which I could overload a method to "return" more than one type. If I was in a class room, or I was teaching a programming class (I've done that for some part of my life :)) my instant answer would have been "No." And then I would have proceeded to explain why the whole idea was not valid in the Object Orientation world. However, this question was not coming from a high school student. In all probabilities it was coming based on a practical ...
Yesterday, I noticed a blog post on Google strategy. The main point is something like “What the hell is Google gonna do with us?”. Well, I couldn't agree more! I've been a little bit worried about some certain Google products, and (most importantly) developer tools. The privacy concerns weren't my top fear (I use Gmail as my primary and only personal email for years now). The “throw the shit out at the face of Microsoft” strategy of course doesn't quite suit me, and most of ...
In a recent post, I commented how it would be awesome if there was an API for the United States Congress. I spoke to Lisa Coligan, National Director at Project Vote Smart, and asked her if they had any plans for an open API. Somewhat surprisingly, her answer was yes! Lisa says that vote-smart.org does "not currently have API but we're planning to in the future. We won't have it in time for 2006 elections but we hope to have it up and in place well before the 2008 elections." Now that would be really ...

This is something I have to google everytime, so it's about time to have a link for it:

ASP .NET videos

Hope the link doesn't change. If it does though, this one might work.

I was a bit saddened by the announcement last week that Pluto was no longer considered a planet. It's something I had heard about for a while and knew would probably happen, but still I'll miss the little guy. I never user a mnemonic to remember the names of the planets but zefrank suggests a new one... Um, yeah. Not so safe for the kids... Maybe we should have a contest for a new, elementary school friendly, one. The only mnemonic I ever really used was BB Roy Went to Great Britain Via west Germany. ...
There's a plugin for Windows Live Writer that lets you embed YouTube and Google videos in your blog posts. Courtesy of WindowsWriterPlugins version 1.0 is available for download at the aforementioned link. The file is a DLL so you will need to manually put it into your Windows Live Writer/Plugins folder. 1) Download the video plugin by visiting WindowsWriterPlugins: 2) Find your Windows Live Writer install location: 3) Extract the downloaded EmbedVideo.dll into the Plugins folder: 4) Restart Windows ...
It's interesting to note, that since I've started this blog more than a year ago,it's my first personal post. I've noticed, that my photo albums on Webshots are not picked up by the Google Images. So I will provide links here and (hopefully) Google indexer will add them.(some comments are in Russian) http://community.webshots.c... http://community.webshots.c... http://community.webshots.c... http://picasaweb.google.com... ...
I made some comments about how Feed Crier should understand syndication extensions. In that post, Adam Kalsey (doesn't he kinda look like a younger version of John Travolta in that photo on his blog?) was kind enough to comment: > Maybe Adam Kalsey will make Feed Crier understand>some of the common syndication extensionsPerhaps, but I'm not convinced of their value to Feed Crier. Right now I'm just >trying to make it the best way to get instant update notifications. As I watch how it's used, ...
How good is your search engine? Considering switching from Google to Live? First take the "lose the address bar challenge." Here is my challenge to all of you, which I plan on starting myself, right now! Stop using the address bar in your browser toolbars and only get where you need to go using your existing links and search engine. Why? This is the best way to test out the search engine that is right for you. How many times do you get stopped and have to resort back to the URL? As many of us on ...
Even after teaching for more than 25 years, I'm still looking for ways to engage my students in their learning. Google has a new service where you can search for videos online. There are several videos they I can use with my students that will be helpful to their learning. I started to look at the videos for programming and there are some interesting videos from a developer at Smalltalk talking about OOP to a video put together at a high school programming competition that was interesting as well. ...
In my job, I work with many emerging and recently emerged software technologies from many vendors. It is often difficult to resolve issues with these products as there isn't a large body of knowledge available. What I've been found incresingly over the last year or so is that most of the documentation and certainly support is coming through blog entries. I can appreciate that Q&A and out of the ordinary things that don't make traditional support documentation is perhaps best communicated through ...
Charlie Wood has been working on synching his Google calendar data with his SalesForce.com account. This is an interesting project. Despite its early age, I thought this a good test for RSSBus. I decided to start with moving Google Calendar events to my SalesForce.com account. First, RSSBus already has a set of GoogleOps, including a googleCalendarSearch operation that lets me get the details of calendar events in my Google account. The next step: adding events to SalesForce.com. The currently shipping ...
I've seen several people (Michael Arrington, Jeff Barr's links, Postbubble) talking about Feed Crier, a new service that lets you receive alerts in your IM client for when your favorite RSS feeds (craigslist, news, blogs) are updated. I'm surprised by this, because this is not some new mind blowing technology. But ok. I think this service is fine and dandy. Do I see someone using it to be alerted to Sam Ruby's latest Atom comments? Nope. No offense, Sam - I wouldn't use this to subscribe to alerts ...
Sprint SMS sucked this past weekend, but as PCSIntel reports, there is a good reason. Sprint has been working on a new system that will allow you to view sent and received SMS as well as compose messages directly from your My PCS web page. It would be really cool if they syndicated my messages in RSS so I could plug them into my Google Desktop and search against them ...

DG left a comment on this post asking how to use Response.Redirect with a KML file.

It's simple. Just add a MIME type on your web server for Google Earth like this:

application/earthviewer .kml

Lately when I was searching something on Google I came accross something very surprising, i.e. I was getting different results from the same search engine in different browsers, I have both Firefox (FF) and Internet Explorer (IE) and I generally keep an instance of both open.. For example if I search for my name on FF and IE, I get results in different order and even the total number of results also differ.. As it can be seen in the below picture that in FF my weblog is coming at the top :) but in ...
Google Analytics is now free, you can track stats for multiple sites (profiles) from a single Google Analytics account, the sites you wish to log traffic on does not have to be on the same domain as the one you registered your account with.To log traffic couldn't be simpler, you are given a snippet of javascript to add to the web page that you want to collect statistics from.See a screenshot below for one of the traffic stats page for my GWB blog. For quick access to your site's stats you can use ...
Scoble is pointing to Rod Edwards' BlockRocker. It sounds interesting. Scoble didn't give it much of a detailed description, but it looks like BlockRocker lets you point to a Google map and then helps you geocode Flickr photos, blog posts, delicious bookmarks, and YouTube videos. I would look more, but I keep getting errors in Firefox. I'll check back later with IE7. On the subject of geotagging, with a couple dozen lines of RSSBus script I've created a little web app that will pin-point geocoded ...
Months ago I received an account for Google Analytics and I forgot about it. Two days ago someone reminded me indirectly that I still had an account so yesterday I decided to give it a try. If you want to Google Analytics empower your site you need to embed a javascript block (called the conversion code) into all the pages you want stats on. In CS instead of modifying all the master pages there is an easier way and propably the correct way to inject the conversion code into all the ASPX pages: First ...
Adrian Holovaty is at it again. You probably know him from one of the first Google Maps mashup, ChicagoCrime.org. This time the former LJWorld developer has created a database of political ads. The database is seachable by year, state, even type of music. Once again, Adrian has taken information and organized it in a way that makes it easily consumable ...
My friend Holly says that my blog is boring lately. So here's a little Google Maps/Flight sim mashup that I saw somewhere today. This is entertaining for at least 45 seconds, but not much more than that. Sorry I guess thats the best I can do. Of course you could just do the same thing in Google Maps or Google Earth or MSN Virtual Earth - just without the little plane and the potential explosions. Here's a funny Flickr post from somebody in the Raleigh Flickr Group. Apparently there are more goat-eating ...
Our data layer project has the usual hundreds of generated files. Several months ago that was no issue, but over the last month or so things began to get slower and slower. My first attempt to get back to reasonable performance was to break the data project out of my main solution. For the last few weeks even the separate project was hard to work with. I turned off Ankh, the Subversion add-in for Visual Studio. That seemed to help a bit. I even tried turning off Norton when loading the project but ...
While configuring BizTalk 2004 on one Virtual machine (on windows 2003), and SQL Server is located remotely on another VM, I came across this kind of exception, which doesn’t give you much of information, except that the transaction has already been implicitly or explicitly committed or aborted, search on google doesn’t either give you any information, hence I have listed it over here, Error: c:\depot4000\jupiter\source... FAILED hr = c0c025b3 [7:30:26 ...

Kirk Allen Evans' Blog : Why Can't I Find a List of Zip Codes, Cities, and States?. Kirk, who’s part of the team that I just joined @ Microsoft (that’s another story…) has a post on Zip Code lookup and interaction. There’s a number of comments on how to get the data and a few good pointers: USPS as an API http://www.usps.com/webtool... Zip code DB http://sourceforge.net/proj... Yahoo Geo Coding API http://developer.yahoo.com/... The ...
Just recently, Microsoft opened up a new community development Web site named CodePlex to start and share development projects with others. It includes projects such as IronPython, which is the implementation of the Python programming language on .Net and the “Atlas“ Control Toolkit, which is a collection of web-client components built upon the ASP.NET “Atlas” Framework. Now Google is offering a site of their own named Google Code. I briefly looked through the CSharp section ...
I’ve been reading a LOT lately, mostly during my commute. I’ve been a MP3 Audio Book guy for the past few months but nothing beats reading. So, lately I’ve been accompanied by my 1.5 year old Tungsten E reading on my way home and to office. The T/E has shown some battery drain issues last week. I had nothing to do this Saturday, (practically half of my family is out holidaying) so, I decided to waste some time trying to investigate what I can do about the battery drain issue the ...
Brady Davis, who has his own real time gps tracker here, is now syndicating his position on Where's Tim.The addition of Brady now makes the view all more interesting...well, if you're a GPS Google geek like me :)He also has an RSS feed, Google Earth KML file and even a mobile Where's Tim.I also need to thank Joey and Luci for their help this morning ...
If you’ve tried moving an eBook you bought on Amazon that was protected with DRM to your palm device and have been successful skip this post. However, if you’ve tried your hands at if and failed (becuase you were as confused as me) read on. Trying to the use the Acrobat Reader for Palm OS (that works for all of my other PDFs) kept throwing the following error - "This document has not been encrypted using stand security handler and therefore could not be opened" A Few minutes on Google ...
Notes on importing and exporting events between Outlook 2003 SP2 Calendar and Google Calendar. Exporting: You can export from Outlook to CSV. You can export from Google to iCal, XML, or HTML formats. Importing: You can import to Outlook from iCal format, but there are issues here:- If you use file->Import, no problem.- If you double-click the file, open it from IE, or drop the file onto Outlook, only the first item in the calendar will be imported. You can import to Google from CSV or iCal format. ...
I used a wizard today to create a dataset (.xsd) and when I ran my web application I had hundreds of warnings in my newly generated dataset telling me my code was not CLS-compliant. I checked out what CLS-compliant means and apparently this warning is new in VS 2005 and is used to check to see if your application is following CLS (Common Language Specifications). In other words the CLS are a set of rules used to check if the code in one language can be used in another language. I checked Google for ...
Today I pieced together some random thoughts on web 2.0. Here they are, sloppily weaved together. Calcanis "gets it". His blog post about paying digg diggers was digged, flickr'd, del.icio.us'd, and even TechCrunch'd (hey, even bad publicity is still good publicity). Before its all over with, this will probably be IT Conversation'd (or should I say GigaVoxed? Conversation Networked? I'm not sure which it is these days) by Doug Kaye and PodTech'd by Robert Scoble (or John Furrier) too. Bloggers, vloggers, ...

I just noticed that in Gmail, if you receive an email that contains something like:

"meet here at 5:00."

or

"Coffee tonight!"

Google will add a sidebar link to add such events to your Google Calendar.  This will be pretty handy.

I hadn't seen this one before – Google Labs Web Accelerator. So they’re a proxy now as well … How does Google Web Accelerator work? Google Web Accelerator uses various strategies to make your web pages load faster, including: Sending your page requests through Google machines dedicated to handling Google Web Accelerator traffic. Storing copies of frequently looked at pages to make them quickly accessible. Downloading only the updates if a web page has changed slightly since you ...
