On the off chance anyone hit www.ILoveVB.NET tonight around 11:30CST, you may have seen some Google Ads showing up... for about 5 minutes I guess. They're currently turned off again. Honestly I haven't decided if I like them or not (regardless of whether they generate any money.) I'm really not thrilled with how they look on the site and I'm even less thrilled with the "relevant" content they are showing. (The "Free VB Code" stuff was fine, the "Get A Date" stuff was not.) I'm pretty sure some/all ...
My opinion so far about every Google initiative is that they do it better than most and almost always accompanied with a sizeable business strategy to backup the product. Latest in their offerings is their version of wikipedia: Knol is different because it credits and pays the authors and by the same token makes them accountable too thereby offering at least a bit more realiability than free-form authoring ~Smile~. I am very interested in seeing how the accountability comes into play. Accuracy of ...

After iPhone, few other names have been making frequent rounds of the internet recently. Since I am an early adopter of iPhone and majorly interested in gPhone and any other variants I thought I might as well jump in and clarify some terms and/or miconceptions at play here. iPhone as you may already be aware is an actual phone running a stripped down version of the famous Mac OS X. The iPhone has gone through many firmware upgrade ever since its introduction a while ago. In North America, Apple has ...
I finally picked up my new AT&T Tilt today - the store I went to at first was all out and so I drove across town to another store where I finally got it....the lady at the first store had tried to sell me on the new BlackJack II but I had my heart set on the Tilt. Had a bit of fun on the drive home with the GPS and Google Maps - can't wait to start building some location aware apps for Windows Mobile 6 :) ...
One of the things I have been thinking about is the caliber of the people I would work with. I think there are several types I would like to work with (or probably already do and like it!). As I mentioned at the start of this series, this is my definition of my perfect work environment. This almost definitely is not what you would see as the perfect environment and that is okay. I invite you to come up with your own ideas and put them together. Technical PM - While I have had the type of PM I really ...
From BBC Technology News: Search engine Ask has launched a feature that it hopes will prove a selling point for consumers concerned about their online privacy. AskEraser allows users to immediately delete search queries stored on Ask's servers, in contrast to rivals such as Google which stores data for 18 months. How personal data is used is becoming more of an issue as people live more of their lives via search engines. Some are concerned about possible deals between search engines and ad firms. I was checking my Google Reader as usual, seeing which items I haven't noticed due to amount of great posts there (see my shared items), which I found this one week old post by David Hayden on CodeBetter blogs. The post talks about Enterprise Library work in-progress to reach EntLib 4.0, with some good news (that I knew would come soon or later :) ). A new "Dependency Injection" Application Block (DIAB) ! To not waste your time, after setting the post into the shared items, I thought the talk is ...
I have been setting up some performance tests using LoadGen today and was having a couple of problems where the message sent by LoadGen wasnt working properly and it was a bit of a pain trying to workout the cause of the problem. After 10 minutes I thought hang on ive got BizUnit tests which do exactly what I want except that I just want to run them a lot of times. This made me think back to something Ewan Fairweather said back at TechEd Barcelona about potentially integrating LoadGen and BizUnit. ...
Just started using Feedburner for my site rss, along with the integration support from GWB. It works fine! From now my Feedburner RSS URL is: http://feeds.feedburner.com... Also GWB provided support for Twitter, which I have also started using. I think Twitter is going to another nice Web 2.0 feature. Nice stuff! Also, I said good bye to Google Ad Sense, as I have seen it's not providing enough profit (0.23 USD in 30 days!) for thousands of page loads. I wonder how Google do billion dollar ...
Amazing things happen when the Internet dies. The dependency that I've developed on the Internet has turned out to be a monster of an addiction. I'm confident that I share this addiction with many, many others. The day after Thanksgiving my household lost Internet because the bill hadn't been paid. Comcast is asking for $600+ before it will be turned back on and so therefore, we've been slow to turn it back on. This of course includes our cable TV, telephone, and Internet which is why it's high. ...

I just took a 60 mile trip and was checking My Location on the Google Maps for Mobile. To my surprise, it was pretty accurate during the whole trip. The map would place me on the highway or within a 50 yards of the highway along the route. Another interesting detail, I didn't have to request the location all the time, the position would adjust as the car was moving - very much like the it does on the GPS. That brought an interesting thought - Now Google has not only the locations where their devices ...
Today, Google made a new Google Maps for Mobile available on their site. The new beta version includes a My Location functionality that places your location on the map based on the information received from the cell phone towers. I've installed the app on my Blackberry Curve. The My Location function is great, even though it is not as good as a GPS. While in my office, Google Maps placed my location within around 100m of my real location. That was great. The neat trick is that positioning works even ...
I've just caught up the latest installment in the " 'To Process' or 'Not To Process' " debate that has become a blogger slanging match between James McGovern, Robert McIlree and James Robertson played out in the comments sections and blog posts. To summarise the debate has moved on from whether EA is just a set of processes or whether it's a practice. My pitch was that it's actually both and applied appropriately. So a debate about direction and ethos. So a pointless opportunity for procrastination? ...
Reading articles, news and blogs in their native language should be more understand and productive rather than reading it in English. Translation of pages is already done by Google but with no precise grammar manipulation and checking. Mr. Zeeshan Ahmed, who left their job and started building his own raft two years ago, has come up with brilliant product PakTranslations.com. This is a free text and free website translation service mean that I can simply provide a link from my site make my site more ...
Ever wanted to synchronize your outlook with your Google Calendar? The solution is here. I have developed an Outlook add-in that wil synchronize the scheduler of it with Google Calendar and backward. I've probably been watching too many Star Wars movies lately, but I think I've come up with a new word. Googlechlorians. I know, you're wondering... what on earth am I talking about? Well, you know how people refer to their blogs having "google juice" when they get good search rank results? I think the word they are looking for is "googlechlorians" It's a measure of the living google force in all of us (or at least in our blogs.) usage: His blog had the highest googlechlorians count I had ever seen. ...
The Tampa Bay chapter of the International Association of Software Architects (IASA) is dedicated to building a community of professionals interested in topics related to software architecture. Scott Guthrie gave a great keynote this morning. As is turns out VS 2008 is almost complete and we are not getting a copy here at the conference. We will get one mailed to us however after they release it. Which means we will not really be one of the first to get it. :( Visual Studio 2008 - Of course this is going to be able to be used immediately by us due to the fact that you can target .NET Framework 2.0. That means we can just install and continue developing the same applications with AJAX integration ...
It's deer season here in Minneapolis. Tonight though, it seemed more like Silver Minivan season. We (the whole damn fam) were driving over to my buddy Mike's house for a cookout, and had gotten slightly lost. (Don't ask, just blame Google Maps) So we're heading down county road 47 and this deer charges across the road, narrowly missing a van in the opposite lane, and slamming head on into the side of our van. Needless to say, we were all WTF was that?!?! We pulled over immediately to check things ...
I've been recently looking for a service that could be used as a medium of communication within a community. I do not want to type that I was looking for a community server as it is name of a product but I was. I needed it for Cracow .NET User Group that I am member of. I considered: Windows Sharepoint Services Community Server Google Groups Each of them has different set of features and can be applied to different requirements. All of them fullfil my requirements. I finally chose google groups because ...
Thank you Microsoft, for once again bypassing my Windows update policies. I can now go explain to my managers why 500 workstations and 12 servers have ended up with Microsoft Desktop Search, without anyones explicit approval. To illustrate how totally stupid this is, check out these screenshots out of our WSUS box: As you can see above, our current update policy only allows Security updates, Critical Updates and Security Roleup Packs to be automaticly installed ("Approve for Installation") on select ...
Quote from the official InfoWorld press release: Microsoft will purchase a $240 million minority stake in Facebook as well as become its exclusive third-party ad platform Facebook will sell a $240 million minority stake to Microsoft, which as part of the deal will also expand the advertising services it provides to the social networking phenom, the companies said Wednesday in a statement. Now, after the very futile example which accompanied the introduction to JavaScript Object Notation in my last post (by the way, I forgot to mention that this is what the fancy acronym stands for, but I'm sure you already knew that), let's go straight to the fun part, and see how we can leverage the flexibility of JSON (and ASP.NET AJAX, of course) to achieve some less trivial result. When developing a web application, we often need to aggregate data from different sources. You might argue this is ...
The folks at Snap have released a new Snap Shot, called the MapShot. Once activated, it display a map of an address, a point of intersection or a location specified using latitude and longitude. This is the first release and only works with Google Maps, but all of the standard controls offered by Google Maps work so you can zoom, drag, or change views. Snap has also added the ability to perform quick local searches for hotels, gas stations and restaurants near the center point of the map. The easiest ...
I've found that not too many of my coleagues know that almost every google application has its own API. E.g. the google calendar has API that is available in .NET. I am interested in the calendar automation so I hope I will find some time to use the Google Calendar APIs and Tools. Anyway all that is available for developers in google applications is avialable here: http://code.google.com/ Just check it. Maybe you will find something interesting for you ...
At the end of September, Microsoft launched a major upgrade to Live Search that makes it faster and easier to use. Some of the areas that have been improved are: Relevance: The size of the Live Search index has quadrupled, which means more correct results for searches. Enhanced ranking algorithms, auto-spell correction and better stop word handling help return the best results. Speed: Pages load much faster than before. Streamlined look and feel: The end-to-end experience has been improved. For example, ...
I saw a post on Digg today about changing the Ready message on the screen of your HP Printers. So I took a look at it and modified it so that it will read the XML output of the Google weather service. Just change the IP address to that of your HP Printer and then set it up as a scheduled task. Then change the Google URL to your location. http://www.google.com/ig/ap... 03051 &hl=en If you ever want to know how cold it is outside, take a look at your printer. #!/usr/bin/perl # $Id: hpsetdisp.pl ...
I didn't hear anything about this until a buddy mentioned a rumor that Oracle might be purchasing Business Objects...turns out the company was already sold, but the purchaser was SAP!

Hello Live Search Maps.... ehhh... Virtual Earth goodbye Google Maps! I was hanging out with Peter Laudati tonight and he showed me the next rev of what I call Virtual Earth. Hmm... It's complicated. Lets go flash. Somewhere in June 2006, I released Orkut Messenger, a messenger for the popular social networking site, Orkut - owned and operated by Google. I'm so glad to receive your nice and happy happy (and a few spam) messages and suggestions either dropped at my mail box or as comment on the post. Orkut Messenger was as an answer to OrkutCute and some thing called ScrapBoy. Well, it worked so great until Google revamped the Orkut portal causing all the scraps to bounce ...
Well, here we have Google India's latest hot shot (or the only), a Hindi typewriter. Kidding, its not pretty much a hardware typewriter but a web application that transcripts all your English typed Hindi mnemonics into Hindi fonts. Truly, this is a magnificent stuff for an Indian having no Hindi (worst a German laid) keyboards but like to express the stuff in India's national language. Google along with this provides an automatic interaction with your blog (if and only if: Blogspot) that will help ...
Silverlight Cream #100 -- This all started on May 16th after MIX07 with so much Silverlight flying around, I found it hard to keep track of everyone, and thought I'd blog fun new things I found. From the email I received, it seemed like people liked the idea, so I continued. Then on August 19th, SilverlightCream.com made it's debut. Now I have a way to allow SL developers that I wouldn't normally be aware of send me links to their work. All I can say is Keep up the Good Work Everyone!! Ronan Geraghty ...
SITUATION: I needed to find out how many people hit and stayed on an internal company site per day on average. So, I looked through the many MANY IIS log analyzers available on the nets to help me with the task. SOLUTION: While I was looking for a decent one I found the LogParser tool by Microsoft, which caught my eye because it's free. I ended up using a 30-day eval copy of something else, but I kept monkeying with LogParser because it survived the 30 days. INFO: http://www.logparser.com/ - The ...
Introduction The following article will provide recently found issues discovered when planning a system seperation using Merge Replication using Microsoft SQL 2000 Database Server. The resolutions offered in this article have been tested and are known ...
I had recently added a Google search box to my blog to allow easier searches on both Google and the Geekswithblogs site itself. However, it seems to have caused a problem today that was preventing people from leaving comments on any of my posts. After much trial and error, I was able to track the problem down to this search box and have removed it from my blog. For those that tried to leave comments today, apologies to all and hopefully you will try again now that everything seems to be working again ...
Today I exposed my first WCF service in the 'old fashioned' Web Service way. The WCF service behaves exactly as ordinary Web Service hosted in IIS. It wasn't as easy as I thought. The app.config of the WCF is complicated a bit and I couldn't find appropriate sample. Hmmm, in such case I say: I just don't know what to type in google to find the exact answer. I finally found it here: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/... The article describes how to create WCF service that can be ...
I met the guys behind Simian Escape tonight. Sorta. I'm not sure I actually met them, since the guy I "attempted" to speak to was dismissive and rude, but hey whatever... A supposedly list of true Google interview questions. Jeez, they make my head hurt. My favorite: 9. Every man in a village of 100 married couples has cheated on his wife. Every wife in the village instantly knows when a man other than her husband has cheated, but does not know when her own husband has. The village has a law that does not allow for adultery. Any wife who can prove that her husband is unfaithful must kill him that very day. The women of the village would never disobey this law. One ...
