While working on SQL Azure connectivity from Visual Studio 2010, I faced the above error. The full error text is as below:- “Server name cannot be determined. It must appear as the first segment of the server's dns name (servername.database.window... Some libraries do not send the server name, in which case the server name must be included as part of the user name (username@servername). In addition, if both formats are used, the server names must match. “ As the message suggested, I tried putting ...
Ok, I am playing with the Windows Azure Training Kit November 2009 release and the first sample I wanted to try was “Migrating web applications to Windows Azure”. I believe a whole bunch of people moving to Azure aren’t just going to create new web apps but rather try and move their existing web apps which is why, I thought this exercise is more important. After following the initial few steps, I came to the place where we manage state providers and one of the requirement is to the StorageClient ...

Technorati Tags: Silverlight Why Silverlight is the future This article was written by Rockford Lhotka several month ago. But, all the concepts are still relevant to day. This is just a great article. Silverlight, and the reason it almost instantly gains traction in any conversation with clients, is that it is independent of Windows. They like the idea that it works across Windows versions without worrying that Microsoft will fix some Windows thing and break their app. Silverlight gives the option ...
While at TechEd Europe in November 2009 I had a chance to catch up with David Robinson, Program Manager in the SQL Azure team and discuss... SQL Azure :-) We cover the "reboot", large databases, the new support for SQL Azure in SQL Server Management Studio, customer feedback and futures. V2 hints include: - bigger database - automatic partitioning - spatial data types You might also want to check out the slides of a SQL Azure session I recently delivered based on the session David gave at TechEd ...
Microsoft is announcing today a new organization within the Server & Tools Business (STB) that combines the Windows Azure group with the Windows Server & Solutions group. This new organization is called the Server & Cloud Division. This is an exciting time for Windows Azure with the recent launch of the Windows Azure platform at Microsoft’s Professional Developer Conference (PDC). The new organization presents a great opportunity for us to deliver more value to our customers and signifies ...

Microsoft makes an excellent digital music player (the Zune HD), a well-crafted networked storage and backup solution (Windows Home Server), a strong DVR/digital entertainment hub (Windows Media Center) and perhaps the industry leading gaming console (Xbox 360) which itself has a growing number of digital media capabilities. But can they all get along? That was my question almost a year ago, when I returned from the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show, which was riddled with a variety of incompatible, ...

We are working on a cloud based application for a long time existing customer. we came across a pretty interesting challenge. The problem was; the New cloud based application needed to be able to integrate with our existing legacy applications. in particular our call center application. We have no intentions of moving this application to the cloud, however we need to be able to have access to some of that data with our new Application. Couple of weeks ago At PDC, during the Keynote Andy Lapin of ...
Two areas I am looking at right now are SQL Azure and Entity Framework 4. PDC had plenty of content on both these areas. Just need to find the time to watch some of it! I was asked a little while back to pull together the best training resources for .NET development to feed into a MSDN UK site. I thought it would be useful to share here as well. By no means everything is listed but sometimes less is more :-). Enjoy: Top Tip: Watch out – these are sometimes big downloads. For instance I just downloaded a high def PDC2009 session at 600MB! I recommend you check out Free Download Manager – it is a great open source tool for working with large files. Offline Training ...
Tibi has delivered another round of intervenes with some of the presenters at PDC. Vittorio Bertocci, Sara Ford, Ted Malone, Brad Abrams, Ade Miller and Don Box shared their ideas on the latest and greatest technology, and also their visions of the future. Tibi also interviewed Jon Flanders and Paula Januszkievicz at TechEd in Berlin. The interviews are here. Update: It seems there is a permissions issue with Azure Storage Tables at the moment, so you get an error when you try to view videos. Hopefuly ...
For the first time in my career I have attended a major conference and it was well worth the wait. I had a handful of major objectives in attending of which all were met. Gain an understanding of Azure and how we can leverage it for our small and mid market customers. Gain more detailed insight into changes in SharePoint 2010 that will impact customizations and solutions that we provide our customers. Have some dialog with some of the MS data team members and others to understand MS’ vision for data ...
A big thanks to all those who attended http://edgeug.net/ last night to hear about SQL Azure and SQL Server 2008 R2. I really enjoyed it and once again “Merry Christmas”! A question I have for you is with all the focus on web or cloud-based applications (Silverlight, ASP.NET MVC, Azure, etc.) is there still a vibrant future out there for Windows Client desktop applications? Will Windows 7 do much to swing the focus back to desktop applications? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying desktop based application development is dead, it’s not by a long shot. With development tools like WPF and ClickOnce deployment desktop applications still rock. I’m just saying that it appears ...
Today was the first day of Microsoft's 2009 Professional Developer Conference, and it kicked off with a 2-hour keynote address led by Ray Ozzie. Ozzie enumerated various new features and launch dates for the Windows Azure Platform, including project "Dallas," a platform for open data feeds based on OData, an opened flavor of ADO.NET Data Services/Astoria. Ozzie also brought on customers and partners, including Automatic/WordPress, Kelley Blue Book, Seesmic and even US Federal CIO Vivek Kundra (via ...
Due to Visual WebGui cloud application platform, developers can now deploy their applications to Windows Azure with the click of a button with no re-writes or new programming skills needed. “(now we can) quickly achieve what, a year ago, would have taken more people, more money, and a lot more time. It’s going to open up applications of sorts we’ve never seen before.” The ease of using Visual WebGui was a key benefit. Noted Naylor, “There was no learning curve with Visual WebGui. To a Windows developer, ...
The first keynote of Microsoft’s PDC 2009 conference in Los Angeles has come and gone. Ray Ozzie kicked it off with some of the main messages that gave everyone insight into how Microsoft sees the direction of IT, programming, processes, and more. It was an interesting session that really focused on a few things, but most importantly it focused on Microsoft dedication to the Windows Azure platform and the big thing (to me), the idea that they are dedicated to making a seamless experience between ...
My thoughts and observations of this year’s Microsoft PDC conference in LA. Day 1: Just registered for the conference. They had many reps available to move attendees through the registration process. We arrived early, and had to stand in line for 15 minutes, while all the reps stared blankly back at us; “We don’t open until 7.” Wow.. Great Customer Service. Let me take this moment to comment on the Conference bag this year. ITS A CHEAP PIECE OF CRAP. Literally, it looks like a “reusable” grocery ...

The Windows Azure team announced availability of the November 2009 CTP of Windows Azure along with new Tooling for Visual studio and an improved Development Fabric as well as samples. The official announcement is given below, straight from the horses’ mouth. Today we released several new features for Windows Azure through the Windows Azure Tools and SDK. This release adds support for Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 and VWD Express 2010 Beta 2. What’s New · Service Model UI:A redesigned and significantly ...
Had created this blog long back but could not due to time constraints. Now that our first Windows Zure app is alive and kicking its time for some REST . The Azure November CTP was announced last weekend and I thought it to be an auspicious enough time to start posting. Until recently, Microsoft’s policy toward Its Professional Developers Conference (PDC), was that it should be held only once every two or three years, and should focus on Redmond’s technology “futures.” This meant that currently- or imminently-shipping products were not to merit much coverage; instead, emerging technologies that were at least 18 months away (or thereabouts) from shipping would get the spotlight. Last year, that was mostly true. We got a pre-beta release of Windows 7, saw glimpses ...
As I mentioned earlier this week, we now have a CTP release of a version of SSMS that is SQL Azure aware. I thought it might be useful to share my first few minutes with it. First up, I cleared out my SQL Azure account using the portal (dropped all my databases). And I made sure the firewall setting would allow me to connect: (for simplicity I just opened up everything. Don’t do that!) Then I downloaded (155MB) SSMS R2 Nov CTP (32bit or 64bit) and installed it: Which gave me a new menu group for ...
It is Friday 13th Nov 2009 - which means it is the last day of TechEd Europe in Berlin. Overall I have had a good week – high quality sessions, lots of time with customers and colleagues and a very smooth conference throughout. I spent the week doing a bunch of things. 9am Monday I was presenting on Entity Framework 4 after 4 hours of sleep and using a brand new VPC after my original failed to load following yet another blue screen from the host (the machine will be flattened next week – perhaps ...
I like it when Microsoft bridges its technologies out to other platforms. I like the PHP Driver for SQL Server and the samples in the PHP On Windows Training Kit so much that I did a whole session on them at VSLive! last month. The ADO.NET Data Services (Astoria) bridges for PHP and Java are very exciting to me. The Silverlight plug-in for Eclipse, the Azure SDK for Java, and the Windows 7 support for Eclipse are all good stuff. To add to these recent developments, Microsoft has announced its acquisition ...
I have had a bit of a “SQL Azure” day at TechEd Europe. I sat through David Robinsons excellent intro to SQL Azure development (smooth, on time, great Q&A), caught up with David afterwards to exchange stories on SQL Azure and find out what I will be missing at PDC next week and then grabbed the chance to capture a short 10minute podcast which I will publish up on Channel 9 next week. David did his demos using a new version of SQL Server Management Studio which works with SQL Azure and announced ...
Due to technical issues, (well, me not reading my hotmail account or any Azure blogs actually) I had a slight “outage” on CloudCasts. The USA-Northwest Azure data centres closed, taking my site with it. After a frantic couple of hours (midnight to 2 AM Swedish time) I’m back up and running in a shiny new data centre in USA-Southwest. The site is now running again at www.cloudcasts.net, but due to the change in the Azure app name, links to cloudtv.cloudapp.net are broken. At the moment I am seeing ...

As I am digging more into SQL Azure, it seems choices for auditing will become a little bit more restricted. Generally speaking there are four ways to audit SQL Server statements; these mechanisms are used by various software vendors to deliver auditing capabilities for compliance mandates and for security reviews. However as we will see, many of the products will stop from working for SQL Azure due to some limitations imposed by the database. At a high level, the four auditing mechanisms are: Server-side ...
I am currently sitting in a seminar on BI in the Cloud by John Welch at the PASS Summit 2009. SQL Server Azure looks promising for a variety of applications. Currently it only supports SQL Server relational database services but future plans to include the BI stack of SQL Server. I have yet to see how loading of data is handled and security is handled but it seems to have a lot of potential for small data sets (< 10 GB). Couple of points: Apparently data manipulation is slower than normal SQL ...
This is a follow up to my usergroup presentation I recently did for Gold Coast Usergroup recently. I have many emails, ok just 2 asking me to document my presentation so they can get started developing with windows Azure. before you get started you need to make sure your development machine is running, Vista or Windows Server 2008 or my favorite windows 7, you also need to have IIS 7.0 with WCF HTTP activation installed. Next you will need to have Visual Studio 2008 or Visual Web Developer Express. ...
If you have been using the SQL Azure Portal for creating SQL Databases and connecting to them from your SQL Server Management Studio, you would have realized the ability to query the Azure Cloud Databases from within the management studio. While this provides great opportunities in terms of relation capabilities and accessibility over the Cloud, there has been a recent upgrade to SQL Azure and in that process there has been a Firewall Support added to the SQL Azure Portal access. Specifically when ...

Also knows as “that’s where I left my shoe” (you will need to listen to understand that) This is a bonus edition of the podcast recorded on the 6th of October in London with Steve Marx, Technical Strategist working on Windows Azure. It starts slow, it needed a few edits (deletes!) as we battled with “what is still not public” but picks up to be a pretty useful look at the improvements we have made to Windows Azure over the last few months with a specific focus on storage. Topics covered include: ...

David and I hosted David Chappell and Steve Marx in London on the 6th of October in a packed day with early adopters of azure (ISVs and System Integrators) David interviewed David (!) and I interviewed Steve for our MSDN Podcast. Well not exactly free but definitely extremely welcome and a great benefit. The introductory offer includes a huge 750 hours of compute time – which rather nicely is how much you need to run a node 24x7 for the whole month. Another great reason to sign up for an MSDN subscription or to join BizSpark if you are a Software Startup. NB: SQL Services is SQL Azure. I guess the naming change slipped through the review process for the site ...
I am not the biggest fan of Mondays but today is different. Today is a good day. Today we announced the availability of Beta 2 of Visual Studio 2010 and revealed the official launch date: Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4 will launch on March 22nd 2010 We have also tinkered with the packaging/licensing (to make things easier for you). We announced new packaging, licensing and pricing of Visual Studio 2010 and MSDN. The best bit (IMHO) is: We include Go Live rights to allow you to evaluate in ...
I had a great time this weekend at the first St. Louis Coders 4 Charities weekend. Over 60 people showed up to create or revamp web sites, applications and networks for nine local charities: Our team ported three United Way web sites to DotNetNuke: http://www.211missouri.org/, http://www.211southwestilli... and http://www.100neediestcases... (Those are the “prevamp” sites – The revamp sites look about the same, but will be much easier for “normal people” to administer.) There was plenty ...
As a VB MVP and someone who really loves VB in general, this kind of news really makes me smile… Microsoft has heard your feedback that VB/C# content parity is a top priority for the VB community. Given that, this issue has become a top priority for the languages team. The Approach We’ve gone about a prioritized approach, in order to fill holes for the most important technologies and content types first. Here are some general guidelines we’ve used… Technologies are prioritized by the number of current ...
I started to look into SQL Azure, the database cloud computing initiative from Microsoft, and I was completely blown away. Microsoft is providing an interesting option that strikes an interesting balance between a plain-old RDBMS implementation and a scalable platform. By definition, relational databases have difficulty scaling due to the many features and constraints that make them popular. However, SQL Azure removes some of those features in order to provide a more scalable SQL Server, while keeping ...
I delivered a session on Windows Azure Storage and SQL Azure Database at the UK Azure user group on the 6th of October. A big thanks to everyone who attended – and for putting up with my last minute improvisation when we realised that 2/3rd of the audience were actually brand new to Windows Azure (and presumably therefore brand new to the user group) Links: www.azure.com Main site and where you register to get tokens. Remember you need separate tokens for Windows Azure and SQL Azure. Or… a more streamlined ...
In my opinion Internet Explorer, which is one of the worst product from Microsoft! (Sorry, no offense! its just my opinion and I guess most others feel the same who thinks browser should be more innovative in making us more productive) How much time it takes to load the about:blank page. why Ctrl+E doesn't go to search box? sick of useless extensions/accelerators, why cant i do paste and go in address bar? why can’t i drag a tab out of tab group? does it ever pass ACID3 test ? Its been quite long time I haven't wrote much due to lot of travelling and non-core area related work (non connected systems, SOA & BPM work). Now, I am back and the good news is I will be drinking, eating and breathing some of the buzzwords..(because of the solutions I am concentrating and architecture of current project I am in) So, Some Buzzwords I am really gonna look/work and more deep dive areas are mentioned below… 1) SOA – Service Oriented Architecture, The most controversial Architecture ...
