MvcScaffolding is a tremendous productivity improvement for MVC developers. Earlier this year, Steve Sanderson posted the definitive 7-part series on MvcScaffolding which is a must-read for anyone serious about doing scaffolding. The best part about the scaffolding infrastructure is that MvcScaffolding is actually built on top of another package called T4Scaffolding. T4Scaffolding can be used as the basis for *any* scaffolding – not just MVC projects. To that end, we can enjoy the same power of MvcScaffolding ...
I wanted to take this time to introduce myself. My name is Roger O'Dell Jr. My development training is in .NET, but my current job requires me to work with Java and Android. I have been doing mobile development now for almost a year. And what a year it has been. I had the opportunity to go to a Microsoft Conference in Overland Park, KS last year. While I was there, I was one of the lucky few who was introduced to Windows Phone 7. Coming from an ASP.NET background, I found the new Windows Phone to ...

A new release of Microsoft All-In-One Code Framework is available on July 13th. We expect that its 17 new code samples would reduce developers’ efforts in solving the following typical programming tasks. Download address: http://1code.codeplex.com/r... Alternatively, you can download the code samples using Sample Browser or Sample Browser Visual Studio extension. They give you the flexibility to search samples, download samples on demand, manage the downloaded samples in a centralized ...
I just wanted to add a log4net library to log all the sql commands generated by NHibernate, but there was one problem. After I downloaded this library using NuGet, I could add a code from this assembly to configure the library, intellisense worked as usual, but when I wanted to compile the project, I ended with error The name 'log4net' does not exists in the current context This was new experience to me, because I have never had that strange situation. In every other solution that I created, this ...
Today we are glad to announce HERMES, an Open Source Infrastructure for publish subscribe messaging model based on MongoDB and RESTful Services. This is 8th release of an open source project from TellagoDevLabs on Codeplex. Hermes is months of hard work by us, including Silvio Massari, Jose Romaniello and Gustavo Machado. Hermes is not BizTalk Server. BizTalk Server has pub-sub mechanism in its infrastructure but in very traditional way and it hasn’t provided a foundation that can be seamlessly used ...
Continuing my short but sweet posts regarding issues I've encountered and corrected during development...... If you are working with the Telerik MVC suite of controls within your ASP.NET MVC application you may encounter a JavaScript error similar to "Object doesn't support this property or method". The problem? Telerik controls make use of jQuery and by default will add a script registrar to your view which then automatically includes the core jQuery JavaScript files. Like many developers you may ...
Hi there, Recently we had a requirement to integrate a RESTful Service with BizTalk Server. Well no biggie. You can use WCF – Custom Adapter and use webHTTP binding and add a webHttp Endpoint behavior. Wala. Easy to say, little bit tricky to do. That all is fine, but what if you want to have a polling receive location which needs to go and do an HTTP GET to a RESTful Service. Aahh!! That’s even more trickier. Bunch of you reading this post would have already thought about some or other way of doing ...
I'm looking for a way to providing users (administrators) of a web application to automatically (meaning it's opt-in to update, but the installation should be automatic when started) update said web application when new versions are released. The reason why I want an automatic approach is that I want the users to be able to update the web application while it's running remotely, without having to gain physical access to the machine (including RDP). I could of course write my own code for this, but ...
Inicamos… La gente ...
I found out last night that I have been awarded with the Microsoft MVP Award for my contribution to the Silverlight community. It is a honor, a privilege and one of the biggest moments in my professional life. I cannot tell you how excited that I am to be acknowledged by Microsoft for doing something that I love. According to Microsoft, this award is given by Microsoft to outstanding members of Microsoft's technical communities based on contributions made during the previous 12 months to offline ...

Initial troubleshooting As always, one of the first things to check is the event viewer to see if an event was generated detailing the error. Additionally check the %windir%\debug for the adamsetup.log and adamuninstall.log (this last one is only created during the uninstall process). These two logs will tell you where the setup is failing and what should be checked. It also pays to know that setup errors are written to the registry. If you cannot find the following key there was no failure as the ...
I hope you haven’t come here looking for an answer!!! Because I want one too!!! I have recently been playing with JQM…and initially loved it….but…. I mean, jQuery mobile is fantastic...whats been done here I think is awesome. I'm enjoying working with it. I have a fixed footer toolbar...3 buttons, Home, New, Settings. Home - I wanted to be non-ajax, so I ...

Goal: Defining Knockout-style input controls can be tedious and also may be something that you may find obtrusive, mixing your HTML with data bind syntax as well as binding your aspx, ascx files to Knockout. The goal is to make specifying Knockout specific HTML tags easy, seamless really, as well as being able to remove references to Knockout easily. Environment considerations: ASP.Net MVC2 or later Knockoutjs.js How to: public static class HtmlExtensions { public static string DataBoundCheckBox(this ...
I’ve read Combining Client Scripts into a Composite Script and wanted to use it. In one of our prod server we recently ran into issue when we went and update the web.config and try to browse the service. We started seeing the service was not responding and getting the following warning in the application log. Our service is WCF service, BizTalk orchestration exposed as service. We have other prod server where we never ran into this issue, so what’s different with this server. After going thru lot of forum and came up on some Microsoft service pack and hot fix which related to ...
Query Templates, Data Link, and Globalization I am sure you must have read Scott Guthrie’s blog post about jQuery support and officially supporting jQuery's templating, data linking and globalization, if not here it is: jQuery Templating Since we are an open source shop and use jQuery and jQuery plugins extensively to say the least, decided to look into the templating a bit and see what data linking is all about. For those not familiar with those terms here is the summary, plenty of material out ...
Quick tip: you can’t include a backslash in the name of the SharePoint 2010 Content Type. In fact, there are several illegal characters: \ / : * ? " # % < > { } | ~ & , two consecutive periods (..), or special characters such as a tab. What, you didn’t know that after entering one of these characters in the name? Is it because you saw this screen: Oh, that’s right….you need to turn off custom errors in the layouts folder…See this blog post for details and you’ll also need to turn off for ...
A month or so ago I was working on a feature for a project that required a level of anonymity on the Sharepoint site in order to function. At the same time I was also working on another feature that required access to the Sharepoint search.asmx web service. I found out, the hard way, that the Sharepoint Web Services do not operate in an expected way while the IIS site is under anonymous access. Even though these web services expect requests with certain permissions (in theory) they never attempt ...

The Membership API came in .NET 2.0 and was a huge enhancement in building web applications with users, managing roles, permissions etc., The Membership API by default uses SQL Express and until Visual Studio 2008, it was available only through the ASP.NET Configuration manager screen (Website – ASP.NET Configuration) or (Project – ASP.NET Configuration) and for every application, one has to manually visit this place to start using the Security and other settings. Upon doing that the default SQL ...
I’m starting to see a whole bunch of tweets and blog posts on how Silverlight/WPF is dead, or how the XAML team has been disbanded at Microsoft, or how someone predicted Silverlight would die, blah blah blah. They all have a similar ring to it though: “Told ya so!” “They were stupid ideas anyway!” “Serves Microsoft right, boy are they dumb!” Let me tell you something, all those that are gleefully raving about Silverlight/WPF’s demise are nothing more than death trolls. Let’s assume that everything ...
One of the things that is keeping us busy is the Web Camps we are delivering across 5 cities. If you are a reader of this blog, and also attended one of these web camps, there is a good chance that you have seen me since I was there in all the places, so far. The topics that we cover include Visual Studio 2010 SP1, SQL CE, ASP.NET MVC & HTML5. Whenever I talk about SQL CE, the immediate response is that, people are wow that Microsoft has shipped a FREE compact edition database, which is an embedded ...
Sometimes you need to access a control within a GridView, but it isn’t quite as straight forward as just using FindControl to grab the control like you can in a FormView. Since the GridView builds multiple rows the key is to specify the row. In this example there is a GridView with a control for a player’s errors. If the errors is greater than 9 the GridView should display the control (lblErrors) in red so it stands out. Here is the GridView: <asp:GridView ID="gvFielding" runat="server" DataSourceID="sqlFielding" ...
Along with HTML5 Boilerplate's rock solid commitment to cross-browser consistency, H5BP brings you delicious documentation, a site optimizing build script, and a custom boilerplate builder. In addition to this, we now support lighttpd, Google App Engine, and NodeJS with optimized server configurations (along with Apache, Nginx, and IIS) and we've reduced the overall size of the published boilerplate by 50%. You can read more of HTML5Boilerplate at the project website. A nice way to get started with ...
The approach takes advantage of the SP 2010 OOB Session Token handler and FBA claims provider implementation that during a period of token lifetime, if there is activity during the period of time that can be defined as "EW" in the image in the section "Background" below, that the SPSecurityTokenManager will, with the FBA provider, reissue a Session Token with new SessionToken ValidTo and ValidFrom times without forcing a re-challenge for user credentials (username and password). MVC 3 is becoming hugely popular thanks to Razor and the Helpers that make building web applications much easier. One of the common requirements in web development, both with web forms as well as MVC based development, is the cascading dropdownlist. Now, for Web Forms, we can use a variety of options viz. server side programming, jQuery or using the AJAX Control Toolkit’s cascading dropdownlist control for accomplishing this. I saw a few samples on the internet that used the erstwhile Microsoft AJAX ...
Our database has a few lookup tables that uses similar approach to implemented by .Net Framework for localized resources: At run time, ASP.NET uses the resource file that is the best match for the setting of the CurrentUICulture property. If there is no match for the current UI culture, ASP.NET uses resource fallback. It starts by searching for resources for a specific culture. If those are not available, it searches for the resources for a neutral culture. If these are not found, ASP.NET loads the ...

The Silverlight Navigation Framework offers great value when looking to map longer XAML page URLs to much shorter, friendlier and memorable ones. This feature is similar in nature to the ASP.NET MVC Routing engine. For instance, the following is a quick sample on how to leverage the Navigation Framework. For this to work, I had to: 1-Add reference to System.Windows.Controls.Nav... in my Silverlight project 2-Add the following declaration in my App.xaml page: xmlns:nav="clr-namespace:Sy... ...

A couple of years ago, I used 'something' to encrypt the connectionstring on a production server. But I never wrote anything down about it. And in the other projects I did later, I never had deploy to the production server. Yesterday, I had to use it again but I couldn't find it. Why? Because I never wrote about it. This blogpost is copy of Chirag Darji post about the encryption of the connectionstring in web.config. All credits to him! The most sensitive information stored in web.config file can ...
In the next generation of SQL Server, codename “Denali”, there is a new feature named Data-tier Application Framework v2.0 Feature Pack CTP to enhance the data import and export with SQL Server, and currently it had been available in SQL Azure Labs. LDAP is not Active Directory, though Active Directory is LDAP. As someone who drinks the Microsoft Kool-Aid, I found myself using LDAP for something other than Active Directory and I thought I should share what I have found. The problem domain was to connect a new MVC application to an existing Sun One LDAP Store. First off, authenticating an MVC application using forms mode authentication and the Membership providers is straight forward. Start with the ASP.NET MVC 2 Web Application Template that ...
This error drives me nuts frequently when editing a .ASPX page. Its really weird. And of course I have this code at the top of the page: <%-- The following line works around an ASP.NET compiler warning --%> <%: ""%> Today I figured out that sometimes I think VS just gets confused. For instance, this line might work just fine: <%= SomeVar %> Then again it might generate that error above. IIS Express is a new web server that replaces the old Visual Studio web server (aka Cassini). IIS Express provides a number of benefits which you can read about here and they key aspect is that it is IIS. However, that’s not to say that there aren’t any gotchas. One of the things that I ran into recently was that I was getting a 404 when trying to use the PUT and DELETE verbs (which are commonly used in RESTful services). The reason this is happening is because these verbs are not enabled in the ...
