In a previous posting, I discussed replacing the stock MVC serializer used for the JsonResult exposed when you use the controller method Json(..) instead of View. This was all find and dandy. But how – you may wonder – can I call actions that contain complex parameters? Do I need a special binder? Should I write my own? The answer is mostly "no". As Phil Hack blogged, the ASP.NET MVC framework already contains value providers that take care of that for you. All you need to do is ensure that your ...

Few days ago I wrote a simple demo about “Using ProudMonkey Controls with ASP.NET AJAX Update Panel”. One small problem is that if for some reasons you will place the MessageBox control outside UpdatePanel then you’ll notice that the MessageBox will not display properly in the page. So if you were setting your html mark-up like this: <%@ Register Assembly="AjaxControlToolkit" Namespace="AjaxControlToolkit" TagPrefix="asp" %> <%@ Register Assembly="ProudMonkey.Commo... Namespace="ProudMonkey.Comm... ...
ASP.NET Enterpise Manager is a web based database management system designed specifically for the management of Microsoft SQL databases through a web browser, without the need for any desktop database management systems such as Microsoft’s SQL Server Management Studio. Luego de varios días sin hacer post, hoy nuevamente retomo para mostrar un pequeño ejemplo de un tema que últimamente ha sido muy tocado en los foros de asp.net de MSDN. Using the MessageBox, ConfirmBox and FrameBox controls within Update Panel control is very easy. The typical way to check for whether anything has changed in the view when you’re navigating away from a page is to bind a method to the change event of each input and to set a flag if this has happened. This flag is then checked when leaving the page and a notification is shown to the user if the flag is raised. This is all good but it does not take into account things like changing the order of inputs and changing values back to their original values. Also, creating dynamic elements makes this ...
Hello all, before I start this article, I want to wish Happy New Year 2012 for you, hope this year will bring more success and happiness for all of us. In this article, I will show you how to create web.config file for ASP.NET application. The .NET Framework relies on .config files to define configuration options. The .config files are text-based XML files. Multiple .config files can, and typically do, exist on a single system. And FYI, I use HostForLife.eu as my hosting provider.System-wide configuration ...
What is the Streetlight Store? The Streetlight Store is a .Net library which uses the Entity Framework and a Microsoft SQL Server database to perform the "back-end" operations required for a typical e-commerce application. While the Streetlight Store is intended to be used for e-commerce, it is "front-end agnostic" meaning that you could just as easily create a point-of-sale user interface. Why is there a Streetlight Store? Why develop another e-commerce solution when there are so many already available? ...
At http://weblogs.asp.net/scot... Scott Guthrie discusses the reason for one (or both) of these updates. This is linked to a possible denial of service attack vector that has recently been publicly disclosed. (This attack vector is not exclusive to ASP.NET, so expect similar updates for Apache/PHP and so on).If you have responsibility for any ASP.NET application you should apply the patch, retest your application, get client ...

This demo is a continuation of my previous article about "ASP.NET MVC 3: Creating a Simple Sign-Up Form" which I wrote few months ago. Basically in this post I'm going to demonstrate how to create a simple LogOn form in which users can supply their username and password. And how to authenticate and validate users in ASP.NET MVC 3. I will not elaborate more in details about the model, view and controllers function so before you go any further, I'd suggest you to check my previous article first about ...

First of all I am so happy to know that many developers around the world uses my controls (~ it's really a big surprise to me. =} ). Thank you all and hope you'll continue to provide feedback or feature suggestions so that I can work on it on my free time. I've seen a lot of developers asking me via email, forums, blog comments, and private messages requesting how to use those controls in ASP.NET 4.0 with the latest release of AjaxControlToolkit. As you may know the previous dll of ProudMonkey controls ...
Here is one way to access a control in a GridView right after a user clicks a button to change from view to edit mode. This example shows a TextBox that gets populated with today's date. First off in order to get your asp.net site up and running (without membership) all you have to do is copy your aspx files to the root of the htdocs folder that they supply for you. This in itself is an application directory and because of this you can run ASP.NET pages. For your information, I host my site with HostForLife.euSecond, you can use membership by going to their admin pages, creating a database, exporting your data and schema from your current membership database, and then running a script ...
I’ve heard people mention, a few times, how they would like for Microsoft to provide a blank template for ASP.NET MVC. The request seems strange because this is something that anyone can do themselves. This isn’t just creating an MVC project and deleting all the items, which I would agree is tedious. Rather, you can create a custom template of any type for reuse and sharing. This blog post shows how to create a custom project template, using the need for a blank MVC template as the use case. Creating ...
When Rob Conery left Microsoft I gave a blog retrospective on possible reasons behind his exit. Today I’m happy to reload the cannon and aim it square at the latest Microsoftie to hand in his blue badge – Phil Haack. Phil has been a huge part of why Microsoft MVC is a success, and his contributions have changed the way web development is done on the Microsoft platform. So why leave, and why leave to Github? Couldn’t he have just switched to the TFS team if he liked code repositories so much? Well, ...

I was recently made aware of a couple of people having issues with WCF services (or ASP.NET applications) when using the MVVM Light project template for Silverlight. There is a blog post and a StackOverflow question, so what exactly is happening there?

This was a very interesting event, I had never spoken in an event with so many developers in one place. It was cool! I had two talks, one on HTML5 and IE9 where I demonstrated the HTML5 and CSS3 coverage in IE9 and performance improvements, the second on ASP.NET MVC Best Practices where I talked about a fraction of things that you need to be aware of and possibly use when you are developing an MVC application. The HTML5 and IE9 talk was more of a showcase and focused on new features that will continue ...
Overcoming the Asp.Net FileUpload limitations. In asp.net 2.0 and up, Microsoft introduced the FileUpload control. As you’ll see in the code below, usage is simple. Park it on the form in design mode, and use the FileUpload.SaveAs(URI) method to save it in a URI of your choice. Add a button, name it Upload (btnUpload) and that’s it. Now write the code as I have and try it. <% @ Page Language ="C#" AutoEventWireup ="true" CodeBehind ="Default.aspx.cs" Inherits ="FileUpload._Default" %> <! ...
2011 has been an amazing year in which I ended up working on an exciting number of projects. SharePoint has continued to be the hottest requested technology that I deal with. At the same time Windows Phone 7 has put Microsoft back in the mobile market and I will be finishing off the year additionally writing for this platform. At the same time the old standards of WinForms and ASP.NET have not left our market space. Ultimately, the IT market is still on fire and I am looking forward to great things ...
I have had a total of 2 years, 3 months, 2 hours of Windows Azure developer experience and it humiliates me to suicidal extents to confess that I am hardly conversant with the platform’s native Diagnostics technicalities. “I am Tinu Thomas and I am a diagnostic-ignorant Azure Developer.” Oh my god…how could he?? Now that we have that past us <sheepish grin>, I would also like to bask in the afterglow of redemption. Thanks to a much-needed job transition phase, I was able to find enough time ...

Using a simulated dialog window is a nice way to handle inline data editing. The jQuery UI has a UI widget for a dialog window that makes it easy to get up and running with it in your application. With the release of ASP.NET MVC 3, Microsoft included the jQuery UI scripts and files in the MVC 3 project templates for Visual Studio. With the release of the MVC 3 Tools Update, Microsoft implemented the inclusion of those with NuGet as packages. That means we can get up and running using the latest version ...
I've recently refactored the way Routes are declared in an ASP.NET MVC application I'm working on, and I wanted to share part of the system I came up with; a really easy way to declare and keep track of ASP.NET MVC Routes, which then allows you to find the name of the Route which has been selected for the current request. Traditional MVC Route Declaration Traditionally, ASP.NET MVC Routes are added to the application's RouteCollection using overloads of the RouteCollection.MapRoute() method; for ...
I was poking around today and found this great article on caching: http://www.cloudcomputingde... Caching is a great way to boost application performance and keep down overhead on a database or file system. Its also great when you have say 3 web roles as shown in this articles Figure 2 that can share the same cache. If one of the roles goes offline then the cache is still there and can be used. You can change out your asp.net caching to use this pretty ...

At http://weblogs.asp.net/scot... Scott Guthrie talks about data binding is ASP.NET 4.5.There is a key statement "Because our GetProducts() method is returning an IQueryable<Product>, users can easily page and sort through the data within our GridView. Only the 10 rows that are visible on any given page are returned from the database."Consider paging through a large dataset, this is going to give ...

The software industry lives within an interesting paradox. IT in the enterprise moves slowly and cautiously, upgrading only when safe and necessary. IT interests intentionally live in the past. On the other hand, developers, and Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) not only want to use the latest and greatest technologies, but this constituency prides itself on gauging tech’s future, and basing its present-day strategy upon it. Normally, we as an industry manage this paradox with a shrug of the shoulder ...

Sometimes your ASP.NET application needs to hook up some code before even the Application is started. Assemblies supports a custom attribute called PreApplicationStartMethod which can be applied to any assembly that should be loaded to your ASP.NET application, and the ASP.NET engine will call the method you specify within it before actually running any of code defined in the application. Lets discuss how to use it using Steps : 1. Add an assembly to an application and add this custom attribute to ...

I'm working on a 5+ year old ASP.NET project that has 74+ projects and we've been adding new Silverlight applications to run in the ASP.NET page islands. My machine at work isn't the most powerful, so I find myself waiting a lot for the whole thing to build. I'm using Visual Studio 2010, so that takes up a lot of resources as well. This causes me to get distracted and I start looking at the news... I need to combat that more :-). I can't get a new machine, that's up to someone else, so I've found ...

When The Center for Organ Recovery & Education (CORE) decided they needed a web application to allow easy access to the expenses management system they initially went to ASP.NET web forms combined with CSS. The outcome, however, was not satisfying enough as it appeared bland and lacked in richness. So in order to enrich the UI and give the web application some glitz, Visual WebGui was selected. Visual WebGui provided the needed richness and the familiar Windows look and feel also made the transition ...

I created a new ASP.NET MVC3 site for sports fans.  It's just a beginning, but I really loved using MVC as opposed to Web Forms.  I just found the html to be much cleaner and simpler.  Plus the pages just seem faster without all the extra view state that most developers forget to turn off when they aren't using it.
