After many months of deliberating I have finally gotten around to starting this blog! The reason for doing this is the large number of half finished articles lying around on my hard disk, unpublished and unloved. These articles have been of huge benefit to me, and have been written in an attempt to consolidate my own thinking, in order to help me structure my thoughts and ideas as I have tried to digest new ideas and understand abstract theories. It is my hope that by tidying up these articles and ...
An ex-colleague of mine used to call his SQL script generator "Super-Scriptmatic 2000". It impressed our then boss little, but was fun to say and use. We called every batch job and script "something 2000" from that day on. I'm tempted to call this one Menu-Matic 2000, except it's waaaay past 2000. Oh well. The problem: I'm developing a bunch of stuff in MVC. There's no PM to generate mounds of requirements and there's no Ux Architect to create wireframe. During development, things change. Specifically, ...

Please find how we call JavaScript Object Notation in cloud applications. As we all know how client script is useful in web applications in terms of performance. Same we can use JQuery in Asp.net using Cloud computing which will asynchronously pull any messages out of the table(cloud storage) and display them in the browser by invoking a method on a controller that returns JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) in a well-known shape. Syntax : Suppose we want to write a JQuery function which return some ...
Converting Existing ASP.NET application in to Windows Azure Method 1: 1. Add a Windows Azure Cloud Service to the existing solution 2. After banging my head for days on a “A potentially dangerous Request.Form value was detected" issue when post (ajax-ing) a form in ASP.NET MVC 2 on .NET 4.0 framework using jQuery and CKEditor, I found that when you use the following: Code Snippet $.ajax({ url: '/TheArea/Root/Add', type: 'POST', data: $("#form0Add").serialize(), dataType: 'json', //contentType: 'application/json; charset=utf-8', beforeSend: function () { pageNotify("NotifyMsgConten... MIX is happening and there is a lot of excitement around the various releases such as the Windows Phone 7 Developer Preview, IE9 Platform Preview and few other announcements that have been made. Clearly, the Windows Phone 7 Developer Preview has generated the maximum interest and opened a plethora of opportunities for .NET Developers. It also takes the mobile development to a new generation and doesn’t force developers to learn different programming language. Along with this, few other releases have ...
MIX day 1’s keynote was all about Windows Phone 7 (WP7). MIX day 2’s was a reminder that Microsoft has much more going on than a new mobile platform. Steven Sinofsky, Scott Guthrie, Doug Purdy and others showed us lots of other good things coming from Microsoft, mostly in the developer stack, that we certainly shouldn’t overlook. These included the forthcoming IE9, its new JavaScript compiling engine and support for HTML 5 that takes full advantage of the local PC resources, including the Graphics ...

I rolled over to the Mandalay for breakfast. There I met a couple guys that were really excited about the new Windows 7 Phone. They, as I, are also hopeful that the phone really gets a big push and some penetration into the market. Not because we don’t like any other of the phones, but because this phone is so much better in many ways. From a developer's perspective creating applications in Windows 7 Mobile will be vastly superior in ease, capabilities, and other aspects. The architectural, existing ...
This post is specific to India Its been a month since I wrote my last post. Much of work has been happening around planning for Tech Ed India, the upcoming Virtual TechDays this week as well as our Developer content at the Great Indian Developer Summit 2010. Its going to be one exciting period starting this week and I am glad I would be able to meet a lot of folks who have written to me personally that they would like to catch up at Tech Ed India. For now, I had a chance to meet the Microsoft India ...
If you’re like me, you might see the open source Eclipse IDE as a copy or, more generously, a port of the Microsoft’s Visual Studio for the non-.NET world. It’s not that Microsoft invented the IDE (I would credit Borland with that), but they really took the idea and ran with it for the first version of Visual Studio .NET in 2002. The question is whether someone outside of Microsoft could take the modern IDE yet another major step forward in both principle and productivity. I think that has actually ...

In the previous post I mentioned about manipulating SharePoint PeoplePicker control using JavaScript, in this post I will show how to validate the InputFormTextBox contol using custom JavaScript function. Here is the nice post by Becky Isserman on why not to use RequiredFieldValdator or InputFormRequiredFieldValid... with InputFormTextbox. function ValidateComments() { //retrieve the text from rich text editor. var text = RTE_GetRichEditTextOnly("&l... rteComments.ClientID %>"); if (text != ...
Shiju Varghese posted an article on his(her) blog and said that the RTM of the ASP.NET MVC 2 had been released and available to download. You can get the installation packeage and the release note here. And based on the release note there’s no breaking changes from RC2 to RTM. Let’s play with the new ASP.NET MVC and look forward the Visual Studio 2010 RTM ...
I was developing custom ASP.NET page for a SharePoint project, and the page uses SharePoint PeoplePicker control. I needed to manipulate the control on the client side based on the user inputs. PeoplePicker Picker is a complex control and the difficult bit is that it contains many controls on the page (use the page source viewer to see the HTML tags generated). So getting into the right bit is tricky and also the default JavaScript functions like, control.disabled; control.focus(); will not work ...
In my previous example I have demonstrated how to create a simple form that would allow users to insert data to the database using L2S. In this example I’m going to demonstrate how to fetch and filter data from database and fill the fields in the form using L2S. This example is basically a continuation of my previous example here. So I would suggest you to take a look at my previous example first before you proceed reading this example. STEP 1: Setting up the GUI To get started, add a new WebForm ...
Few months ago, I’ve created a simple demo about “Creating a Simple Registration Form using the ADO.NET way”. In this article, I'm going to demonstrate how to create a simple form that would allows users to insert data to the database using L2S. As an overview, LINQ to SQL is a technology that allow you to query sql server. LINQ to SQL is an O/RM (object relational mapping) implementation that ships in the .NET Framework "Orcas" release, and which allows you to model a relational database using .NET ...

When I get some time (and hell starts to look a little chilly) I would love to do a more detailed review. But I wanted to get something “out there” as I really like this book and reviews of it seem a little thin on the ground. In brief: Is it a good book? Yes Would I recommend this book to a .NET developer who was new to Ruby? Yes (This is me by the way) Would I recommend this book to a Ruby developer who was new to .NET ? Yes Would I recommend this book to a developer who sometimes does Ruby and ...

Sometimes we got this error message when we try to validate our asp.net website on w3c. To solve this error you need to write the PreRender event. Here is the complete event:

Protected Sub Page_PreRender(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.PreRender
        imgBtnGo.Style.Remove(HtmlTextWriterStyle.BorderWidth)
        imgBtnGo.Attributes.Remove("border")
End Sub

One of the biggest questions I routinely get asked is how scalable Commerce Server is. Of course the text book answer is the product has been around for 10 years, powers some of the largest e-Commerce websites in the world, so it scales horizontally extremely well. One argument however though is what if you can't predict the growth of demand required of your Commerce Platform, or need the ability to scale up during busy seasons such as Christmas for a retail environment but are hesitant on maintaining ...

Just a quick tip for working with the gridview in ASP.Net. If your data column contains HTML text, you've probably seen something like this in your gridview after pulling the data: <font color="red">First Item</font><br/>... color="green">Second Item</font><br/>... color="blue">Third Item</font> To have the relevant column render in HTML, just go to your gridview property pages, find the column you need rendered in HTML, and click 'convert this ...

1) Turn off Tracing unless until required Tracing is one of the wonderful features which enable us to track the application's trace and the sequences. However, again it is useful only for developers and you can set this to "false" unless you require to monitor the trace logging. How it affects performance: Enabling tracing adds performance overhead and might expose private information, so it should be enabled only while an application is being actively analyzed. Solution: When not needed, tracing ...
On Friday night, I took my life in my own hands and helped out out our local school PTA quiz night. Of course being a techie, what could I possibly add to an event like this. The answer of course is a scoreboard… Using a projector a laptop I perched myself at the front of a school hall in front of all the parents to either face a techie success or dismal humiliation in front of my peers. The scoreboard itself was an ASP.NET AJAX application that periodically and smoothly refreshed itself drawing ...
Why Use Client-side Javascript Templates? When building rich internet applications you often need to construct html on the client. I am going to demonstrate how to construct DOM elements using the jqote jQuery plugin (2.0.0). The naive approach to client-side html generation is to embed html inside javascript like: var text = 'Some text'; $('body').append($('<div id="content>' + text + '</div>"')); This approach fails as the complexity of the html increases. It is also a clear separation ...
While I’m playing with Windows Azure I found it’s a little bit hard to find the information about it since it’s new to us. When I was investigated the new CloudDrive feature I almost could not get anything about it except its SDK. Today I found a very good series of posts on ASP.NET community by Jeff Windmer. For now there are the frist 3 posts of his series but I believe he will continue and finish it. Please have a look on his blog: http://weblogs.asp.net/jeff... ...

When Windows Azure was first released in 2008 the only programming languages you could use were .NET languages such as Visual Basic and C# and the applications you built had to run in Partial Trust (Similar to ASP.NET Medium Trust). In the interim we have made a number of changes including allowing applications to run in full trust, native code is now supported (no longer had to be managed code such as C#) and we support FastCGI applications. Which means: Windows Azure supports the Internet Information ...
Normally when I have develop a service layer for my silverlight app I have it all in the same web project (easy, no clientaccesspolicy headaches), … but in some cases I have my service layer in a separate solution, in theory it’s quite easy to setup a client access policy, but… when you try it it fails because that xml policy file is not in the root of the cassini web server :-(. What to do.. change your settings, good old trick that can be applied even to VS 2005 :-) http://weblogs.asp.net/scot... ...
The .NET community, unlike the Java and python community do not provide Data Mining solutions outside the framework of their RDBMS MS SQL Server. In my quest to integrate Data mining into an existing ASP.NET enterprise solution running on MySQL, i was faced with quite the task! In attempting to review existing solutions, i followed the following criteria: Open-source and free (not necessarily the same thing!) GUI for interactive data mining and exploration Concise, accessible and well documented ...

Problem The MicrosoftMvcJQueryValidatio... script file, which integrates with the jQuery Validation Plugin, does NOT populate validation errors inside the Validation Summary control. Technorati Tags: ASP.NET,General I often see questions at forums(http://forums.asp.net) asking stuffs like: Where to begin? Where Do I start? How to Get Started?
