I now have the new version of firefox installed and it does use less memory (about 50% less according to Task Manager!)
Accordign to a post at http://www.macstories.net/n... Firefox 7 has been released. This may be be just a Mac version for now. I look forward to the Windows as it promises to require about 50% less memory

I remember when Windows Framework Extensions (WinFX) came out there was ill-informed remarks that Microsoft had killed off the Dot Net Framework. The truth was that Microsoft had extended the framework. A similar problem seems to be arising with Windows RT and Windows 8 - the truth is that Microsoft is again extending the Dot Net Framework. The Cobol (and to a lesser extent C#) programs were easy to understand whereas other languages such as J*** were not. There was even a highly obfuscated one in JavaScript!
