Are you doing your part to get rid of IE6?
Microsoft certainly are! They have a web site devoted to this at http://www.theie6countdown.... In this first three months of this year, IE6 usage worldwide has decreased from 12.0& to 11.4% Finland and Norway are already below 1% Denmark and Sweden are at 1.0% and 1.1%. Are you doing your part to encourage people to upgrade their IE version? At http://www.theie6countdown.... there are instructions on what you can include in your web site to encourage people to upgrade ......

Stripping password from a connection string.
When debugging it is useful to display the connection string but what you do not want is to disclose the password. So I wrote a function StripConnectionPassword to strip the connection string of any password. The function takes a string like: Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Passwor... Security Info=True;User ID=DINGBAT;Initial Catalog=tempdb;Data Source=DALET and returns: Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Passwor... Security Info=True;User ID=DINGBAT;Initial Catalog=tempdb;Data Source=DALET The function ......

this.Request.UserHostAddress returned :::1 instead of 127.0.0.1
One of the niggling points of getting ready for IP6 is that on some Windows 7 installations (but not all) the local loopback address gets returned as :::1 instead of 127.0.0.1. The :::1 is a valid IP6 address and can be returned even if still using IP4 addressing. The fix for it involves editing the hosts file. On a Windows 7 box this is located in two places but the one to edit is the one in C:\Windows\System32\drivers... To edit this file you need to run Notepad as an administrator. The easiest ......

Apress Pro WCF 4 - ISBN 978-1-4302-3368-8 A postscript

I have started reviewing another book on WCF and was unable to get the sample code from that book to work. Within a few minutes I had expanded the sample to allow me a function to debug the problem. That I had the code working so quickly is a tribute to the good examples in WCF on Dot Net 4 (http://www.apress.com/9781430233688)

Happy 20th Birthday Visual Basic!
I am astounded - Visual Basic is 20 years old! I have been using it since VB3 but am now bi-lingual C# and VB.NET. I am very pleased regarding the news that the next version of VB.NET will be written in VB.NET. This will put alongside languages such as Assembler, C, C++ and C# where the compiler can compile itself. Read about it at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/vbt... ......

Process kills developer passion
At http://radar.oreilly.com/20... there is an excellent discussion on whether Software Development has become too process orientated. Whilst not as ground-breaking as Fred Brooks "Mythical Man-Month", the article is thought proking and provoked a lot of useful discussion. For example: I have to agree that process in excess is stifling. "Make things as simple as possible, but not simpler" is the solution to most of our programming problems. What works best, depends ......

Style Cop Rule SA1627 (DocumentationTextMustNotBeEmpty) and Remarks Tag - Your opinion please!
At http://stylecop.codeplex.co... there is a discussion about Style Cop run SA1627 and whether blank Remarks tags should be allowed as the latest version of Style Cop (4.5.14.0) detects them. If empty remarks XML documentation tags are wrong, then they should be deleted however I have suggested that they should not be objected to. My reasoning is that empty tags make it very easy to document comments that otherwise might be lost. So what is your opinion in this ......

Style Cop 4.5.14.0 has been released and has the means to set the Resharper defaults to be Style Cop compliant. This is a an excellent step forward (or would would have been for me it the promised upgrade button had been visible). As Style Cop 4.5.14.0 is still an RC, this issue will no doubt be resolved. Style Cop is a very good tool which I urge every C# developer to install and use.
