Illustrated C# 2010 - ISBN 978-1-4302-3282-7 Initial comments

The author of Illustrated C# 2010, takes the approach of illustrating concepts with diagrams rather than lengthy explanations. From the chapters I have already read, the author succeeds.

This is certainly a book worthy of further study.

Apress "Pro DLR in .NET 4' - ISBN 978-1-430203066-3 - Conclusion

Having finished Pro DLR in .Net 4, I have concluded that this is a book that needs to be read through several times and the examples worked through.  Since the Dynamic Language Runtime is as much a radical change as the the original Common Language Runtime, this is hardly surprising.

Ultimatly the DLR will enable more niche programming languages, hence I recommend this book to Dot Net teams for when they have a requirement that justifies the effort.

Apress Deal of the Day - 22/Feb/2010 - Entity Framework 4.0 Recipes: A Problem-Solution Approach
Todays $10 deal from Apress at http://www.apress.com/info/... is "Entity Framework 4.0 Recipes: A Problem-Solution Approach" Whilst I am still wary of using the Entity framework and I would caution against its use for updates in financial systems, unless you use a technique such as you can find on pages 509-512 of this book. This book is very impressive as I found the answer to this in about 2 minutes from the time I downloaded the e-book. Entity Framework 4.0 Recipes: A Problem-Solution Approach ......

Resharper - another useful feature - dealing with embedded classes

This weekend I was style-copping some code I had downloaded. One of the files contained two classes. Within one file there were two classes; the first class was named the same as the file.  I found the second class header and ReSharper gave me an option to split out the second class to its own file.

ReSharper has many such useful features to aid in fixing code.

Is IE9 a modern browser?
At http://people.mozilla.com/~... there is a very provocative article entitled "Is IE9 a modern browser?". There is a rebuttal by Tim Sneath at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/tim... that is well worth a look. Certainly IE9 is already superior to its predecessors. My comment on the matter is that those that consider IE9 to be non-standards compliant, should submit tests to the W3C to demonstrate the non-compliance. Upon acceptance by the W3C, all the competing ......

Apress "Introducing Visual C# 2010" - ISBN 978-1-4302-3171-4 - Conclusion
After having spent several weeks reading this book (1230 pages before the index!), I can thoroughly recommend this book as a practical introduction to Visual C# 2010 both to people learning C# and to experianced C# users. It introduces C# through practical examples then gives a good introduction to the Dot Net framework. After dealing with Data Access, it gives a brief introduction to variousUI technologies. The final section deals with advanced topics including a thoroughly practical intruction ......

Apress "Introducing Visual C# 2010" - ISBN 978-1-4302-3171-4 - Further comments

Having read through the ".Net Class Library" and onto the section on LINQ I continue to be favourbly impressed by this book.

One important point about this book, you can just dip into sections rather than just read from start to finish.

I was impressed by the write up on the various collections. After reading the chapters on LINQ, I am looking forward to getting Adam Freeman's book on LINQ.

Apress "Pro DLR in .NET 4' - ISBN 978-1-430203066-3 - Initial comments
The dynamic language runtime (DLR) is a radical development of Dot Net. In some ways it is like the Laser was 40 years, a solution looking for a problem. At the moment the DLR supports languages such as Iron Ruby and Iron Python, together with dynamic extensions for C# and VB.NET. Where DLR will also score is the ability to write your own Dot Net language for specialist areas. So how does this book fare in introducing the DLR? It is a book that will require careful study and perhaps reading several ......

Why support IE6?
The question has been raised as to why support IE6? I can give you two reasons, why your client will require IE6 to be supported: While IE6 continues to have above a certain of browsers in use The web application is for a controlled environment that has not been upgraded from IE6 to a later version I personally only use any current or previous version of IE to: To access the Windows Update site As required to test IE compatibility of applications that I write I agree that that the CSS fixes required ......

A tale of UAC on a Windows 7 Development Machine
This week I faced an interesting problem on a Windows 7 Development PC. I have run MakeLog (http://commondata.codeplex... sucessfully on my PC but my colleague could not run it sucessfully. Both of us are local administrators, so what I could do on my PC, he should have been able to do. The cure was to turn UAC completely off and re-boot. Once re-booted, the installation ran without incident. While I would never suggest turning off UAC normally, on development PCs, it is a liability ......
