Recently I had problems creating a web reference for a web reference written in J***. VS2010 simply would not create the web reference. All it gave was a message about non-conformance with the W3C XML standard.

I managed to reference the web service in Soap UI (a free download from http://sourceforge.net/projects/soapui/files/ or http://www.soapui.org/)

SoapUI has a facility to check web services for conformance with the WS-I standard - I ran the WS-I and found the service did not conform to the standard. (SOAP UI make running the WS-I web service standards quite easy)

Within Soap UI, I could see the XSD of the web service. I then tried to recreate it manually within VS2010 and the source of the error became apparent.

I emailed the supplier with the details, the problem was promptly fixed by them and I was then able to create the necessary web service reference.
