Apress Books - 3 - Pro ASP.NET 4 CMS (ISBN 987-1-4302-2712-0) - Initial comments
Whilst this book is about the building of a CMS system, the subtitle of "Advanced Techniques for C# Developers using the .Net 4 Framework" is better. Since the book is based upon a successful C# 2010 solution, it is book of Precept and Example rather than just Precept. Chapter 1 provides examples on how the new features of Visual Studio 2010 provide a real business benefit. Show it to budget holders that are holding out on upgrading to VS2010 - it will encourage them to agree to the upgrade. I am ......

Apress Books - 2 - Pro ASP.NET 4 in VB 2010 (ISBN 978-1-4302-2511-9) - Initial comment
I have started reading Pro ASP.NET 4 in VB 2010 (ISBN 978-1-4302-2511-9). While I will be returning to this book later, I would like to point out one particular topic "Accessing the HTTP Context in Another Class". The particular context is that of accessing Trace. HttpContext.Current.Trace.W... Whilst this would seem a trivial piece of code, it saves passing the context, when calling a function as the function can get access to HttpContext.Current.Request... HttpContext.Current.Request... ......

Use the correct file for configuration files that may be used on web sites

Normally on web sites, all the configuration information is held in a web.config file or a sub-file thereof. If you have code requiring say a connection string, that need to be usable not just in a web site, but also in a windows service or other non-web context, then you need a bespoke config file. However be sure to give a config file type, to avoid it being downloaded from the site.

So for your FRED class library, give it a file name like fred.config and not fred.XML.

Working with Word 2010 and getting it to save earlier word version documents
Word 2010 is an excellent word processor, except for one quirk - you cannot save a previous version of Word. The solution it would seem requires changing the registry [back it up first] and changes values at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\... The change seems boil down to changing node data value from 2 to 0 for the required version. For more information see http://support.microsoft.co... http://www.microsoft.com/do... ......

Apress Books - 1 - Final Comments on Design Driven Testing (ISBN 978-1-4302),

This is a book that all J*** developers should read from cover to cover. I look forward to C# and VB.NET versions. There is a tendency in software development to go to extremes. This book helps to correct that tendency. I reccomend it also to all system architects.

Apress Books - 1 - Design Driven Testing (sunny/rainy day)
Whilst reading through Design Driven Testing (ISBN 978-1-4302, I came across a very telling statement concerning the expansion of use cases. This was in the context of sunny days (default course through the application) and rainy days (the paths travelled when things go wrong). The quote I want to share with you is this: "If the rainy days scenarios are not explored in sufficient depth before coding begins, all sorts of nasty surprises can leap up during coding, often resulting in a need to rethink ......

Running old versions of Internet Explorer on 64-bit Windows 7 and another useful utility
Recently I needed to run old versions of Internet Explorer - specifically IE 6 and IE 7. (Without getting into the "wars", shall we just say that the older versions of IE can give unexpected results with certain mark-up, so you have got to run tests with them) The host PC of course needs to run the latest version of IE as it is more secure. Microsoft recommend that you run old versions of IE via Virtual PC. The instructions to install VM components are at http://www.microsoft.com/wi... ......

Another excellent utility - 7-ZIP

I recently had to mount an ISO image on a 64-bit Windows 7 PC. My ususal utility would no longer work as the driver is 32-bit. The answer I eventually found out is to use 7-zip from http://www.7-zip.org/

Not only is this an excellent compression program but it will also open an ISO file.

Control-F5, F5 and IIS Log numbers
Recently while I was upgrading a client web site, I started up a holding page web site on the same URL and displayed the holding page in my browser. At the end of the upgrade, I stopped the holding page web site and restarted the main site. I then refresh the tab in my browser but only saw the holding page, until I did a control-F5. So remember if in doubt on what you should see in your browser window, do a Control-F5 to force the browser to re-load. Changes to stylesheets sonetimes need a control-F5 ......
