BizTalk Server Cumulative Updates
Last week I saw a twitter post where it was shared that BizTalk Server 2010 CU 7 had been released. As usual attempts to search for the CU returned loads of hits for any number of old CUs and CUs for other versions of BizTalk. After a couple searches on Bing, switching to Google I found the following page which details all the CUs for BizTalk Server from 2006 through to 2013: https://support.microsoft.c... Now I've recorded this, hopefully I won't need to search again ......

BizTalk Server 2010 - Add New Item Schema Missing in Visual Studio
I recently encountered an issue when developing a BizTalk Server 2010 solution using Visual Studio 2010. When selecting to add a new item to a project, the schema item was missing in the Visual Studio dialog box: I fixed this issue by repairing the Visual Studio 2010 installation as follows:Open Control Panel and select Programs and FeaturesFind the listing for the edition of Visual Studio you are having a problem with and select it.Select to Uninstall/Change from the top of the program listing. In ......

BizTalk Server Performance Guidance: Hyper-Threading
This morning I was reading through some of my usual blogs and came across some very interesting and updated information relating to BizTalk performance and hyper-threading. The two source pages are: http://appfabriccat.com/201... http://msdn.microsoft.com/e... If you take a look at these pages, you can see that the recommendations on hyper-threading and the BizTalk platform ......

BizTalk Installation: Error 5009 Registration of BAM performance counters failed
I was recently installing BizTalk Server 2010 and encountered an error that I had not seen before: Error 5009 Registration of BAM performance counters failed After a small amount of investigation it turn out to be a known issue where the performance counter registry has been damaged. To fix this problem open a command prompt as administrator and run: lodctr /r This will rebuild the performance counter registry, after which you should be able to successfully install BizTalk Server ......

BizTalk Server Configuration - BizTalk Group Creation Failure
I was recently installing a new BizTalk Server 2010 mult-server implementation, where the SQL server installation resides on a separate server to the BizTalk server installation(s) and I ran into a problem when attempting to configure the first server in the BizTalk Group. I was able to succesfully set up the configuration, but when applying the configuration the tool was unable to create the BizTalk Group. The SSO set up completed successfully, and looking at the SQL server a number of BizTalk Databases ......

BizTalk 2009 Adapters - The Scheduled Task Adpater: Installation
The BizTalk Scheduled Task Adapter is an in process receive adapter that can be configured to execute a prescribed task on a daily, weekly or monthly schedule. "The adapter is configured entirely within Biztalk, all config is stored within the SSODB and can be exported and imported via binding files. The schedule capabilities are similar to those available with the Windows Scheduled Task Service." Although defined on codeplex as an adapter for BizTalk Server 2004 or BizTalk Server 2006, the Scheduled ......

BizTalk 2009 - The Community ODBC Adapter: Installation
I have previsouly detailed the installation of MySQL, the configuration of MySQL and the installation of the ODBC Data Connector for MySQL. The reason I needed to install and configure these servers was to provide a test environment for a BizTalk Server 2009 solution I am working on where BizTalk will be querying and populating a MySQL database. To do this I then needed to install and add the Community ODBC adapter from Two Connect: "The Community BizTalk Adapter for ODBC is based on the code that ......

BizTalk 2009 - Project Creation Failed
A couple of weeks ago I had some issue with my BizTalk Server 2009 development environment which resulted in a reinstall of Visual Studio 2008 and the Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1. Following this reinstall I began to have problems when trying to create BizTalk 2009 projects: Error Details: “Create BizTalk Project …. Project Creation Failed” It turns out that this is a known issue with BizTalk Server 2009 and Visual Studio 2008, whereby the installation of the Visual Studio Service Pack 1 can ......

BizTalk Server 2009 - SOA Patterns Chapter 1
As stated in my previous post I am currently reading Richard Seroter's book "SOA Patterns with BizTalk Server 2009". Having just finished Chapter 1, Building BizTalk Server 2009 Applications, I thought I would record some immediate thoughts on what I have read so far. This chapter works as an introduction to BizTalk Server, covering the basic architecture, schemas, maps, messaging and orchestrations. While this is not likely to offer much to an experienced BizTalk developer, it does work as a good ......

BizTalk 2009 - BizTalk Benchmark Wizard: Running a Test
The BizTalk Benchmark Wizard is a ultility that can be used to gain some validation of a BizTalk installation, giving a level of guidance on whether it is performing as might be expected. It should be used after BizTalk Server has been installed and before any solutions are deployed to the environment. This will ensure that you are getting consistent and clean results from the BizTalk Benchmark Wizard. The BizTalk Benchmark Wizard applies load to the BizTalk Server environment under a choice of specific ......

BizTalk 2009 - BizTalk Benchmark Wizard: Installation
As previously detailed, I have completed a single server installation of BizTalk Server 2009 standard on my development laptop; a MacBook Pro Core2Duo running at 2.16Ghz with 2Gb of RAM. Following this I also posted on my use of the BizTalk Server Best Practices Anaylser and how to configure the BizTalk SQL Server Jobs. All of which means that I should have some confidence that I have a decent working BizTalk Server 2009 environment, Next I thought that it would be a good idea to try and get some ......

BizTalk 2009 - SQL Server Job Configuration
Following the installation of Biztalk Server 2009 on my development laptop I used the BizTalk Server Best Practice Analyser which highlighted the fact that two of the SQL Server Agent jobs that BizTalk relies on were not running successfully. Upon investigation it turned out that these jobs needed to be configured before they would run successfully. To configure these jobs open SQL Server Management Studio, expand SQL Server Agent > Jobs and double click on the appropriate job. Select Steps and ......

BizTalk 2009 - BizTalk Server Best Practice Analyser
The BizTalk Server Best Practices Analyser allows you to carry out a configuration level verification of your BizTalk installation, evaluating the deployed configuration but not modifying or tuning anything that it finds. The Best Practices Analyser uses "reading and reporting" to gather data from different sources, such as: Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) classes SQL Server databases Registry entries When I first ran the analyser I got a number of errors, if you get any errors these should ......

BizTalk 2009 - Installing BizTalk Server 2009 on XP for Development
At my previous employer, when developing for BizTalk Server 2004 using Visual Studio 2003, we made use of separate development and deployment environments; developing in Visual Studio on our client PCs and then deploying to a seperate shared BizTalk 2004 Server from there. This server was part of a multi-server Standard BizTalk environment comprising of separate BizTalk Server 2004 and SQL Server 2000 servers. This environment was implemented a number of years ago by an outside consulting company, ......

BizTalk 2009 - Naming Guidelines
The following is effectively a repost of the BizTalk 2004 naming guidlines that I have previously detailed. I have posted these again for completeness under BizTalk 2009 and to allow an element of separation in case I find some reason to amend these for BizTalk 2009. These guidlines should be universal across any version of BizTalk you may wish to apply them to. General Rules All names should be named with a Pascal convention. Project Namespaces For message schemas: [CompanyName].XML.Schemas.[... ......

BizTalk 2009 - Architecture Decisions
In the first step towards implementing a BizTalk 2009 environment, from development through to live, I put forward a proposal that detailed the options available, as well as the costs and benefits associated with these options, to allow an informed discusion to take place with the business drivers and budget holders of the project. This ultimately lead to a decision being made to implement an initial BizTalk Server 2009 environment using the Standard Edition of the product. It is my hope that in ......

BizTalk Server 2009 - Architecture Options
I recently needed to put forward a proposal for a BizTalk 2009 implementation and as a part of this needed to describe some of the basic architecture options available for consideration. While I already had an idea of the type of environment that I would be looking to recommend, I felt that presenting a range of options while trying to explain some of the strengths and weaknesses of those options was a good place to start. These outline architecture options should be equally valid for any version ......

BizTalk Server 2009 - SOA Patterns Introduction
I have recently picked up a copy of Richard Seroter's book "SOA Patterns with BizTalk Server 2009", and thought that I would try and make some useful comments on each chapter as I read it. I am currently working in an environment where we have been implementing BizTalk Solutions as a part of an overall SOA strategy for a number of years, and I am hoping that this book will help me to gain a new perspective on the use of BizTalk in this type of architecture, and hopefully expand my understanding of ......

BizTalk 2004 Standard Edition - with Second CPU
We were recently looking at ways to improve the performance of one of our BizTalk Servers, a server which is only using BizTalk Server 2004 Standard Edition. In our scenario, the server was often maxing out the single CPU it had, under peak load this resulted in time outs on the front end system that was calling our BizTalk web services. There did appear to be any design or tuning changes that would make a hude difference to this busy system, so we started looking into licensing costs and the idea ......

BizTalk 2004 Naming Guidelines
The following BizTalk naming guidlines are heavily based on those proposed by Scott Colestock over at Trace Of Thought. As you can see from the link, Scott wrote his naming conventions for BizTalk Server 2006, whereas I am still using BizTalk Serevr 2004. In reality these guidlines are pretty much universal across any version of BizTalk you may wish to apply them to. Although the general principles for these guidlines are the same as Scott's, I have made some changes based on personal preference ......
