It is now possible to move your SQL Azure server from one subscription to another. Last week, the Windows Azure team added this new feature to the Windows Azure Management Portal. Permissions for moving a server between subscriptions simply require that you are an account administrator, Co-administrator, or service administrator in both the source and target subscriptions. Moving a SQL Azure server is simple; log in to the Windows Azure Management Portal and select the Database option in the Navigation ......

Some Background The AdventureWorks database has been around for over a decade; a staple amongst sample databases. The first version of the AdventureWorks database appeared in time for SQL Server 2000. Microsoft has been good at keeping the AdventureWorks sample database up to date as new versions of SQL Server are released. Case-in-point: SQL Server 2012 is at RC0 and yet you can already find a version of AdventureWorks for it (albeit, it really isn’t that different from the SQL Server 2008 R2 version). ......

One of the things I really wanted to do lately was to get SQL Azure, OData, and Windows Phone 7 working together; in essence, expose SQL Azure data using the OData protocol and consume that data on a Windows Mobile Phone 7 device. This blog will explain how to do just that. This example is also in our SQL Azure book in a bit more detail, but with the push for WP7 I thought I'd give a sneak-peak here. You will first need to download and install a couple of things, the first of which is the OData client ......

You asked for it, you got it! To help meet the needs of existing and future SQL Azure customers, Microsoft has announced that they are lowering the price of SQL Azure, and as well introducing a 100MB database option! The new pricing structure will result in cost savings from 48% to 75% of SQL Azure databases for databases larger than 1GB. Additionally, the new 100MB database option has been added to enable new customers to start using SQL Azure at half the cost of the previous price, yet still provide ......

I have seen a number of questions lately regarding how SQL Azure handles throttling and how to determine why the throttling occurred. Sometimes those questions are followed by another question asking how to handle throttling conditions in their applications. Troubleshooting SQL Azure Throttling GREAT NEWS! There actually is a way to find out if you are throttled and why, and the results of the throttling. The key is to look at the error message coming back to you. You’ll typically see an error message ......

Blue Syntax is pleased, and very excited, to announce the general availability of Enzo Backup for SQL Azure. It took a monumental effort to put this product together. The hardest part was designing the backup and restore routines in a way that would not constently trigger the throttling safegaurds in SQL Azure. In addition to the typical retry logic, adaptive loading algorithms that know how to "slow down" the data read/load based on specific error conditions was also incorporated, while keeping ......

Brent Ozar and Tim Ford announced today they have two SQL Cruises planned for 2011. If you don't know what a SQL Cruise is, you are missing out. Hop on over to their SQL Cruise site for information, but I'll briefly tell you that Brent and Tim have found themselves a niche. Brent and Tim simply reserved some space on a cruise ship, and for a low price for the cruise and a VERY low price for quality training, you are enjoying quality time with fellow SQL folks as well as relaxing as you travel to ......

The past month or so has been quite busy. Herve and I finshed the SQL Azure book, then spent a couple of weeks preparing for a 3 day deep-dive Azure training class in Dusseldorf, Germany. I must say, the hotel and conference rooms were SWEET! The training went well (not as many attendees as we would have liked, but it was fun nonetheless). We spent 4 days there then bolted to Paris, France for two days to see some of Herve's friends and do some site seeing. We returned home a week ago. However, no ......

After I posted my last blog post, Ralph Squillace responded with a link that everyone that is doing OData/WP7 development should be aware of. 2 days before I posted my Data/WP7 post, Microsoft's Mike Flasco posted this regarding the changes that are coming in the RTM version of the Windows Phone 7 library. The current WP7 phone platform is missing some core types, types that data service client LINQ provider requires to function properly. The CTP that is currently available (and which my example ......

In a previous post I discussed how to build an SSIS package to automate the backing up (COPY) of a SQL Azure database. I assumed that once the SSIS package was built that people would know how to deploy the package and create a schedule for it to run automatically. I have had several people let me know that just building the SSIS package was not enough, that the additional information of deploying the package and creating a job for it is needed. The first step is to compile and build your SSIS project ......

Being a SQL Server guy, and a huge fan of SQL Saturday, I want to post about the Orlando SQL Saturday on October 16th at the Seminole State College. 9 tracks with 6 sessions each, lots of great topics from great speakers such as Devin Knight, Louis Davidson, Rodney Landrum, Jorge Segarra, Andy Warren, West Dumey, and Adam Jorgensen. And yes, I will also be speaking. The cost for this event is $10 to cover lunch. If you are in the Orlando area, please come and support this great event. If there are ......

Just received confirmation that I am speaking at the Azure Boot Camp in Pittsburgh in January. The actual dates are the 12th and 13th of January at the Microsoft Offices in Pittsburgh. This event is sponsored by Microsoft and ComponentOne. While I am looking forward to speaking and presenting at this Pittsburgh ABC, it is in January. I am trying very hard to convince them to move it to my neck of the woods (Florida) as the weather will be much nicer, but I don't think that will happen. I don't think ......

On October 24th, Microsoft released Service Update 4 for SQL Azure. The major component of this release was the live release of Database Copy functionality, which allows you to make a real-time "backup", or shapshot of your database into a different database. Backup functionality has been at the top of feature requests for SQL Azure for a long time, so this feature is certainly welcome. However, this great feature has some limitations. For example, there is no built-in way to automate a backup. For ......

The last few months have been extremely busy. Herve and I have been heads down working furiously on the SQL Azure book. There is a light at the end of the tunnel finally, we are wrapping up the remaining couple of chapters this week. Along with that, we put on a SQL Saturday event, and continue to run two local SQL Server User Group in the area. However, as if we weren't busy enough, we have run and presented at several Azure Boot Camps around the area, and I have been asked to be the presenter at ......

One of the hotest technology topics of the day is Azure. Being a SQL guy, I am all over this technology, especially SQL Azure. So much so that Herve Roggero and I are currently writing a book for APress on SQL Azure. This book will be out in September and will include deep and thorough coverage of SQL Azure, best practices, and how-to's. We are excited about this book and the technology. However, we'd like to hear from you. As we go around evangelizing SQL Azure at user groups, code camps, and SQL ......
