MDX'ing up the Mountain

Wednesday, September 03, 2008 12:23 PM

I have recently been given the opportunity to take a look at cubing within one of Cognos' products (not sure which one yet).  To me it feels like riding a BMX up a mountain of new concepts concerning Business Intelligence (BI).  I know very little about cubes except general information I have heard from others.

  • Not for realtime reporting.
  • One cube = specific need
  • Modifying a cube is not simple.
  • Requirements must be set before you start modeling.

I am curious though if there are any reference information aside from product documentation that would be helpful to get started on cubing.  I read that there is a language for working with cubes called MDX (link) that MS created and others adopted in their products.  I am not sure how much Cognos uses it though.

Any BI people out there that could steer me in the right direction or at least away from the wrong ones?  I thought this site (link) had a good overview that helped.
