Cracking that hard candy shell
Geeks in general have issues with people perceiving them poorly. I know 'cause I r one. There was a point in my career where I hit a wall that I could not see. I had (I thought) good ideas, but no one listened so I pushed harder to no avail. After my boss took me aside and coached me gradually, I realized after a year or more that I was the problem. I was so caught up in my own world that I forgot I was surrounded by smart, intuitive people that actually wanted to know me for me. I tried so hard ......

MSSQL Experts Duke it Out - Live
Hearing both of these guys (Paul Nielsen and Louis Davidson) together was awesome (another DevLink Nashville plug). They share common views, but also differ on a few things which was really nice to hear. Even the experts have their own ideas which leaves room for us common folk. No absolutes, lots of grey or gray depending on which side of the pond you find yourself (someone's commentary here). A few items that I knew were bad are cursors among others. I liked the bantering of normalization pros/cons ......

What happened to my pretty optimized code?
Here is a great tool that changed the way I thought about .NET development... wait for it... Lutz Roeder's Reflector (link). Which uh apparently is now owned by redgate software, makers of SQL Refactor (very nice tool). All right how many people 'know' their language well enough to debate the merits whether it is VB.NET or C#? Are you thinking the differences between the 2 are too great to start a gentlemens discussion? Or simply feel your blood boil? Either way, I am not concerned about pluses and ......

1/24 + 1/24 = 2 hours PL what?
I am really, really new to PL/SQL having spent time on DB2/400 and MSSQL most of my career. I needed to manipulate time in Oracle and tried to apply existing knowledge with mixed results. Craziness like having to select from table 'dual' instead of nixing the 'from' keyword like in T-SQL. Weird. This site has helped a lot due its simple examples to help build my confidence. So anyway on to the title of the post... (sorry for the alignment of the code, first time pasting from Toad) I am really curious ......

devLink '08
Wow, devLink this year was even better than last year. I thought it was odd having it in the Fall instead of the Spring but I liked it. I think a 2 day convention is perfect. Enough time to get your brain sloshy, but not so much that it leaks out. Brian H. Prince http://brianhprince.blogspo... was great retelling his career progression. He tricked us into agreeing to sign up for Twitter... which I have not completed yet. Could it maybe be called something a little more aggressive than 'tweeting'? ......
