Microsoft has recently announced that they are starting some projects on to create free translaters from Office Open XML to OpenDocument and vice versa.  This is quite a change as most people will realize.  The article linked above has a lot more details on what this change means.
Microsoft is collaborating with France-based IT solution provider Clever Age and several independent software vendors, including Aztecsoft in India and Dialogika in Germany.
The first ODF translator is available on SourceForge here.
