Today "they" passed the kool-aid
Today was one of those days that I dread. We had an all hands company meeting at the place where I work. Now, typically I think these things are a TOTAL waste of time and today was no exception. The company I work for is in a rough business right now. Needless to say the economy hasn't been friendly to us here lately. But does that stop the corporate big-wigs from passing the kool-aid around? OF COURSE NOT. It was an hour long session of Everything's great, we're still making money, just not as much ......

A Funny Story From My Dad
My Dad is in the old school sense a Geek. He is a true Renaissance Man. He can bake an apple pie that would turn your Granny green with envy AND he can make wood furniture that would make the cabinetmakers of old proud. Not only is he comfortable with that he's comfy taking a multi-meter to task when troubleshooting an electrical problem on his boat. So here goes in Dad's own words: When a radio doesn't work at all, no lights, total silence, what sort of idiot to you have to be to think that turning ......

I've been tagged!
I've been tagged (see here for details) So here are a few things I couldn't live without in no particular order: 1. My Husband and My Son: Yes I know--All Together Everyone (AWWWWW). But seriously, they are the reason I get up in the morning and trudge off to work and they are the reason I rush home every day. My husband for his quirky sense of humor and unusual perspective on the world. My son for being that little piece of immortality I leave for the future. 2. My Zen Vision: M MP3 player: I couldn't ......

The Web Embargo is Over!
My self-imposed ban of all things internet/web/online games, etc is over. At approximately 10 PM last night, I completed reading Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows. I swore off all things Net related at Midnight Friday b/c I didn't want some spoiler-monger to ruin my enjoyment of the last of this quite excellent series. AND NO--I'm not posting spoilers on this blog. Do not post spoilers as a response to my blog entry. In fact, for the time being I am disabling comments for this post. I don't ......

Why does QTP lose its mind?
If you've been following my blog, you know that we use Mercury QuickTestPro here for our automated testing solution and I have fallen victim to one of QTP's quirks today. For some reason I have yet to figure out QTP occasionally loses it's mind. How can a software package lose its mind you may wonder? Well I'd like to know the answer to that question too. Here are the symptoms of QTP losing its mind: Objects that QTP once knew appear to be forgotten. Its as if QTP suffers from Alzheimer's or something. ......

I went down to the Crossroads--Fell down upon my knees
Every once in a while, I am fortunate enough to find poetry in reality. Its a rare occurence but it does happen. And when it does, you just have to share it. The most recent version of this occurred while I was visiting my parents in Wilmington, NC. The developers down there just built a brand new shopping center. Its called Mayfaire Town Centre and its basically an outdoor mall. My parents and I went there to go to one of their favorite lunch spots The Artisan Cafe. While we were eating lunch, my ......

Int() vs CInt()
My recent automation components have required quite a bit of calculations compared to the automation scripts I've built up to this point. (ie Any at all really) And I've noticed a difference in behavior between the VBscript functions Int() and CInt(). So far I have been able to use Int() with no issues. All it does is take a positive number and truncate the decimal. This is necessary since the calculations the applications I am working with are doing just that, truncating the decimal. Weird huh? ......

Transformers--This movie is definitely more than meets the eye.
In my continuing aspiration to be the best Geek I can be, my family and I went to see Transformers tonight. First off--let me say that when it comes to Transformers I'm all thumbs. I am terrible at transforming the toys from disguise form to robot form. And I was never that big of a fan of them in their hey day of the 80's. At that time, I was more into matchbox cars and the like. However, my husband is a HUGE fan of Transformers; has been since he was a kid. As I sit here in our office, if I look ......

Alas, No More Low Hanging Fruit
In the course of my growth as an automation engineer, I have come to the end of the "salad days." In my own self estimate, I am a wee infant when it comes to automation. Up until last week, I had been standing on the shoulders of giants, gifted beyond my own experience, and essentially wiring up the components they had already built. The luxury of already built and stable components came to a screeching halt last week. In the words of Boss Man, "the low hanging fruit is exhausted." Now I have moved ......
