WHAT THE &^*^&*(^ IS AN MTP DEVICE!!!

I own a Creative Zen Vision: M.  And I love it.  OR...should I say I did love it until yesterday.

For some reason, which I have yet to determine, when I link my Zen to my PC, my machine tries to reinstall the drivers including an "MTP device".

AND FOR SOME #$#%$%^$ REASON--Its giving me an error I have yet to find a solution to.  When the install attempt is complete, Windows responds with:

"There was a problem installing this hardware:
    Creative Zen Vision: M

An error occurred during the installation of this device.
A service installation section in this INF is invalid."

Now I have been ALL over the net trying to find a solution to this problem. I've removed the infs and replaced them with known to work versions and tried to reinstall. I have uninstalled ALL of my creative software...I've done a "get this thing to work" dance outside in the moonlight.

I am at a total loss.  The only suggestion that I found that I haven't done yet is "format c:, reinstall windows, etc"

I REALLY don't want to have to go through that pain but..its starting to look like I am going to have to.  BOOOOO

<sigh>  Here's to two days of getting my machine back on its feet again so I can sync music to my player.  <GRRRRRR>

If anyone out there in Geekdom, has a solution that doesn't require a format of my hard drive.  Please post a response here.

<at her wits end>

I'm not sure this helps, but MTP is MS' Media Transfer Protocol. It sounds like you need Media Player 10 or higher installed. Here's a Wikipedia article on it:

Good Luck!

I am currently away from the offending PC on a short VK but when I get back I will update my Win Media Player installation. Off the top of my head, I believe I already have Win Media 10 but I will double check.

<dreading the prospect of a reinstall>

In order to fix my issue, I had to uninstall Creative's software package. Update my Win media player installation to Version 11 and then reinstall Creative's package. That fixed my issue. At least for now...

Well o Well. My 6 month old Zen M 30Gb has been working just fine. Now it aint recognised by either my laptop or desktop!! Came across this thread by doing a search. Seems a few other are having a similar problem. I have filled in the report at creatives website so lets see what they say.

sry, should have said I have tried the suggestions above and have the latest versions of WMP on both my PC (vista) and laptop (XP).
I have had a response from Creative that seemed to help.
A shorted version of their reply explained Go to Recovery Mode ==> http://uk.europe.creative.com/support/kb/article.asp?l=3&sid=4794
After following these step and the PC rebooted the sync manger recognised the Zen (great!!) and after a scan I needed to sync 5000 ish files. After about 5-8% through the process the sync manager stopped responding and the old problem was back.
Again I have responded to Creative, so I guess its watch this space

yeah, I created this post because I couldn't find a solution on my own. And low and behold, the issue appears fairly common. As far as movies go, I don't use mine for video. I know you can but I'd rather cram my 30 GB full with music instead.

I had the same problem. Then, Yesterday I read this thread but no suggestion fixed my problem. So I searched in google and I found a thread where someone wrote, the WM Format SDK 11 could fix it. I downloaded it and after I restarted, my ZVM worked fine with my computer!
So I fixed the problem by downloading WMP11 + Windows Media Format SDK 11. [http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsmedia/bb190309.aspx]

If that doesnt help: An other guy wrote, a file called "fixup.zip" would fix the problem. You can find that thread here: http://forums.techarena.in/showpost.php?p=2814982&postcount=3 (I dindt test it)

Maybe I helped someone... julegerv

@Deborah:

After you converted Videos to avi [xvid or divx and mp3, less than 25fps], you can put them on your ZVM by copying them with the explorer (NOT the Creative Explorer) into the Video-Folder. If you dont know how to convert your vids:
- SUPER (C): *** FOR WIDESCREEN MOVIES ***
OUTPUT CONTAINER: avi
OUTPUT VIDEO CODEC: divx
OUTPUT AUDIO CODEC: mp3
MEncoder
VIDEO SCALE SIZE: 320:176 or 640:352 (TV)
ASPECT: 16:9
FRAME/SEC: 23.976 (must be less than 25)
BITRATE: less than 1000 (I use in the 900s but can go less for smaller output file size)
SAMPLING FREQ: 44100
CHANNELS: 2
BITRATE: 128 (can use less than this for smaller output file size)

*** FOR FULL SCREEN MOVIES ***
OUTPUT CONTAINER: avi
OUTPUT VIDEO CODEC: divx
OUTPUT AUDIO CODEC: mp3
MEncoder
VIDEO SCALE SIZE: 320:240 or 640:480 (TV)
ASPECT: 4:3
FRAME/SEC: 23.976 (must be less than 25)
BITRATE: less than 1000 (I use in the 900s but can go less for smaller output file size)
SAMPLING FREQ: 44100
CHANNELS: 2
BITRATE: 128 (can use less than this for smaller output file size)

- DVDFab Platinum or higher: DVD to Mobile - with the settings "generic.avi.xvid.mp3"

I tried both versions and they work fine.

PS: sorry if my english is not so well.. I'm in 8th grade [germany]...

bye julegerv

Guten Tag Julegarv. Glad to know my blog has gone international. I have gotten more feedback from this post than ANY other in my blog. Amazing that Creative hasn't posted something to solve this...
Glad I can help the Netizens solve annoying problems with Windows.

Cell phone? Is it a cell phone that is a cell phone/mp3 player combo? Typically an MTP device is something that windows is wanting to treat as a Media Transfer Protocol device.

Have you tried upgrading to the latest Windows Media Player?

Julegerv saved the day for me, with the WM Format SDK 11 installation.

I've just got a little baby 1gb Zen with the MTP problem.
I'd updated the media player to version 11, and fiddled with the legitlib.dll file with no joy, I never got around to trying the legitlib patch.
But the WM Format SDK 11 thing worked first time, although it did look like it'd frozen at one point during installation. Took about 4-5 min, I went and put the kettle on.

Tea was good, laptops better :¬)

ALt.

I have a Zen Vision M 30 g and I'm getting the mtp device window too. I have media player 11 and reinstalled creative software. no luck though. windows will still not recognise it. Creative said Since i'm outside the warranty period i would have to pay them for help so I will never buy a creative product again. Guess i'll have to trash it. I love my zune though and my ipod..

Hi, I have spent the whole weekend trying to install the Creative Zen 4GB player without success. I have searched the whole web for any particula solution but nothing but wasted time. I am trying to download wmformatsdk.exe
Recently, I just updated to service pack 2 due that was one of the requirements to update the player, at least that is what the software says. Besides I just uninstalled windows media player and reinstalled back but upgraded to wmp 11. I hope to make it work. otherwise I will be around here looking for answers, thanks for reading this and I hope you can help me out with this, thanks folks.

Well folks I'm just a non techo elderly gentleman who has this problem also.I find much of the terminology of the fixes suggested to be incomprehensible. I do use Windows Media Player and some Creative software but don't have any idea how to update it. Can somebody advise???

you should be able to update your windows media player software by downloading it from the microsoft website.

My suggestion would be to uninstall Windows Media Player via the Add/Remove programs control panel. Then, uninstall all your creative ZEN related software via the Add/Remove programs control panel.

Download the latest win media player version from the Microsoft website (searching for Windows media player via Google will point you there)

Then install your creative software tools for the Zen.

Hopefully this will fix your issue and hopefully this explanation is a little more "non-technical" for you. If this doesn't work, I'd get on the phone with Creative's Tech Support team.

Good luck Phil!

Can I join in the fun?
'My computer' shows that I have 4 of these MTP 'disks' in my PC.
Should I get rid od, say 3 of 'em? Will it hurt?
I don't play a lot of music but when i do Mero seems to have taken it all over for me.
Suggestions please.

You're welcome Ashley! You know its amazing but this ONE post gets more traffic than anything else on my blog. Go figure. I'm just glad I could help since clearly everyone is having trouble with this and Creative doesn't seem to want to offer a readily available solution. =)
