C# soon to dethrone C++ as the third most popular language in the world

Every now and then I go to Tiobe to see their ratings on the popularity of programming languages. Usually there is nothing exciting out there, just a few small moves of languages so I was interested to see in December Tiobe had a headline of C++ about to be dethroned by C#

Looking at the stats, sure enough, according to Tiobe C# is on the verge of taking the number 3 spot.

It will be interesting to see what happens when Windows 8 hits the market with what seemed to be a revival of C++ during Microsoft’s Build Conference earlier this year.

Also, with .Net coming prepackaged with Windows 8 and being available on the Windows Phone via Silverlight it should lead to an interesting battle to see who is able to hold the spot next year.

I do not agree with Tiobe at all in this - there entire basis is some (unpublished) search engine queries. There are a number of things jump out at me that are very clearly wrong are:

ObjectiveC vs C# - they are within 2% of each other! There is zero way that there is as much ObjectiveC as C#.

The do not split VB into VB (v6 and less) & VB.NET (v7 and above) which are two very different languages really.

JavaScript is flat since 2001! You just have to look at the explosion of JS work in recent years to see that is completely wrong.

Go had the highest raise in 2009! WTF no one even uses it.

Nope, this chart & data is wrong from the results published and until they publish the formula for peer review I doubt my view will change.

Have to agree with you Robert, I can't believe anyone really believes Tiobe means anything.

Fair comment....

I was also surprised to see that JavaScript was so far down the list, especially if you think that it is found nearly everywhere and there has been a real "promotion" of it.

Does anyone know of any other indexes that provide similar information. It would be interesting to compare results and then get an aggregated list.

The Tiobe index rankings as snapshots can be a bit weird, but it's useful to look at the trends. I suspect the reason C++ is shrinking WRT C# is that C++ programmers are splitting off in two directions. Those who need complex ecosystem support are moving in the direction of managed and VM languages and further from the bits. Those who need performance are dropping back to C and closer to the bits. This makes some sense. However, as an early adopter of C++ (Lo! these many years ago.), I certainly like the fact that Microsoft is giving a bit of a boost to the C++ language.

Nah, I don't think the day drivers, low-level operations & performance is better than C++ maybe... Actually, C++/Native code is back with WinRT & Windows 8... Why? Simple... Power & Managed code ain't as wonderful as once many people thought.

My two cents for the day

@Angel - I have heard the C++ in Visual Studio today isn't the same beast that I dealt with when I was doing C++ at uni... I really hope so...

Cause managed code sure beat the pants off the pain of the old C++
