When I heard this I thought I just had to pass it on...

We had a new client a few months ago that had bought a brand new Dell laptop. He paid top dollar for it but after using it for a day it kept randomly going into standby mode by itself. Initially Dell blamed our software and said it was causing the problem... well it turns out...

They did all sorts up updating the bios etc and then all of a sudden the machine stopped going into standby mode by itself. Everything worked fine for two months, then all of a sudden last week it started to go into standby mode again randomly... after the client phoned Dell and had numerous people try and check the machine and run tests on it and tell him it was a third party software issue and that everything was fine with the machine... he was insistent and eventually got put through to someone in their support department who immediately asked him if he wears a magnetic wrist band - turns out he does.

So what was happening was that dell has a magnetic sensor that detects when the laptop case is closed which puts it into standby mode automatically - it is situated on the left hand side of the laptop out of the way - but since the client is left handed as he would type the magnetic wrist band would pass over this sensor magically putting the laptop into standby mode - of course whenever anyone else used the laptop it worked fine - so when they ran stress tests for two days they got no faults - it just so happened that he had removed the wrist band for the last two months, but last week had put it back on...

hows that!

Is there a way to fix other than not wearing the magnetic bracelet?

Not that I am aware of - unless you can disable the standby mode altogether... I am sure this would be possible somewhere in your windows setup mode - but you should probably contact DELL tech support and explain to them the problem and then they could assist you with the specific machine.

Great spot.Had a collegue experiencing this and was driving her mad.
To stop this you can change setting in power options.
"When I close the lid on my portable computer" change to nothing

Thanks for this info (I was doing a search because my dell was doing the same thing). I removed my magnetic bracelet so let's see if that solves the problem. Thanks again.

OMG - this just explained my random situation! I have a wallet in my left front pocket with a magnetic clip! That's the culprit!

**** my life...
Words can not express my gratitude towards you. All this time I was thinking that I have magic hands that break every computer they touch. I was sure that it was absolutely my fault and that I did something wrong with my completely new pc. And it turns out it's just a wrist band. I never in my life felt so enlightened and relieved at the same time.
I rarely write comments but this time I just had to. I don't care that this was posted in November 2010.

This happened to me also and this article spelled it out. Except mine is not a bracelet that caused it, it was my money clip in my front pocket of my pants.

I have been working on several smaller Dell laptop models and it seemed as if hitting a key on left side of keyboard was putting it into sleep mode. This was it I have a wristband with a magnetic clasp!!! Brilliant!!! Thank you I'm not going crazy after all or at least not getting any worse!!!!!

I provide remote support and am not able to see the surrounding environment. I would not have thought of a magnetic bracelet. Thanks very much for your post of this issue. The user was wearing a magnetic bracelet, on his right wrist.

One of my users is experiencing the same problem. I just told her to remove her magnetic bracelet and we will check it after a couple of days, I'm pretty sure this was the incident but still we need to validate it.

Great post, i think my client has the same problem, but i already set the option in Windows to do nothing when the lid is closed but it still happens. When i look in the eventviewer of Windows i see that the laptop was going into sleep mode because the sleepmode-button was pressed or the lid was closed. Even more strange is when i work with the laptop for a few days it doesn't happen, laptop keeps running and does not go into sleepmode. I never wear magnetic wristbands but maybe my client does sometime. That should explain why it happens so randomly. I am sorry for my crappy English but seriously.thank you for sharing this information. I contacted Dell Pro support and asked if they heard more complaints about the spontanious sleepmode, they never heard of this issue and couldn't help me.

Thank you for this! Ran into the same issue (Dell, MS Word, mysterious sleep mode, etc) and luckily enough this thread was Google's first suggestion for the problem. I immediately called the client back to just to confirm whether he wears a magnetic wristband or not and guess what... he does! :D You basically saved me from hours of agonizing "issue" tracking. :)

I have another laptop but am experiencing the same problem. My mobile phone case has a magnetic flip that keeps it closed. Not yet 100% that this is causing the issue, but it may well be. Many thanks for the unbelievably useful post - I would have never figured it out on my own.

This happened to me as well. For almost a month my laptop (company's) is driving me crazy. Called for IT support almost everyday but the problem persist. Only today someone from Dell visited me and tell me that my magnetic wristband is causing the problem.

I use the Dell E5450 and only this model was affected by my wristband. The other laptop that I use (E5440) is not affected by my wristband (on my right hand)

Just discovered this article after lots of head scratching and updating all sorts of drivers and alas it was as simple as my magnetic band triggering sleep mode everytime my wrist went over the finger print sensor.

Just adding my thanks!!

Great solution to a very puzzling problem. Culprit was Apple iWatch magnetic wrist strap. Had me and Dell support puzzled for quite some time and we were about to ship laptop back to Dell. Thanks so much for your extremely helpful article, even years later!

Thank you, thank you, thank you this has been driving me insane for over a year. I have had three new laptops provided by my company and every time they have no issues when IT look at it at the office but it happens constantly for me.
I am so relieved and I can actually get on with work properly.
So happy right now!
Thank you again.

This helped us a great deal. We had Dell already replace a motherboard and the sensor of a brand new laptop when this exact issue returned. Then on another laptop the same thing happened. So we knew it was something user-related, but WHAT? Our user also had a magnetic wrist band causing this behaviour! Would be great for Dell to have this in the Knowledge Base for their helpdesk personell for whenever they get a "sudden standby" issue.

OK I had gone through Dell support and a bunch of other forums and finally found this...

I don't have a magnetic band but I DO have a fully automatic Longines watch and figure that prob has a magnetic in it...

Since taking the watch off it hasn't happened at all... I'll give it a couple more days but so far so good!
