ReadyNas Mistake
You get these days when you just wonder what on earth you were thinking – I had one recently. I have been looking for a fanless power supply and after scouring the net eventually came across a local site that was advertising a ReadyNas Fanless PSU. Without bothering to look at the specs properly I ordered it – it was quite pricey, and then got an email from the supplier saying that they were out of stock in the country and I could either wait for another one to come in or get a full refund. I insisted ......

C# Anonymous Types
Another nifty little feature in C# is anonymous types. Anonymous types allow a “short cut” in creating an object with a set of properties. They seem to be used mainly in LINQ, however we will make up a scenario here. Assume you have a situation where you want to group a whole bunch of information, but you don’t want to go to the effort of defining a class or a structure. You can get around this by declaring an anonymous type. Lets have a look at some code… var person = new { Name = "Mark", Surname ......

C# Extension Methods
This evening I thought I would look into something that I have been meaning to look into for a while, but just haven’t given the time of day. Initially I wanted to brush up on some LINQ, but after going over the definition of LINQ, I stumbled across extension methods… I have heard of them quite a bit – but never really bothered to see what they are… So the official MSDN explanation says the following… “Extension methods enable you to "add" methods to existing types without creating a new derived ......

Dell Laptop magically going into standby mode
When I heard this I thought I just had to pass it on... We had a new client a few months ago that had bought a brand new Dell laptop. He paid top dollar for it but after using it for a day it kept randomly going into standby mode by itself. Initially Dell blamed our software and said it was causing the problem... well it turns out... They did all sorts up updating the bios etc and then all of a sudden the machine stopped going into standby mode by itself. Everything worked fine for two months, then ......

Exams are over, time to really start learning
So my UNISA exams are over for the year – and I can finally dedicate some time to professional learning. Since my last development blog post I have had the opportunity to be exposed to some great technologies that I would like to learn more about, so here’s the plan… Continue my exploration of F# and finish reading Expert F# Learn Blend, partly because I feel it is a great tool that exposes some of the real power of XAML Do a few blog posts on my .Net Based RF Reader Explore some more design principles ......
