TFS in Azure – The highlight of the keynote at PDC
So, while I didn’t get to attend PDC2010, I did get to watch it live at the Microsoft Offices in Johannesburg. It had all the usual things I was expecting, Windows Phone 7 Demo’s, Azure Demo’s and Balmer giving a great pounding impersonation. For me though, the highlight of the whole thing was mention of TFS being made available in the Azure Cloud, with a CTP due early next year. I have been eyeing TFS for a while now but decided against it because of the poor reviews I heard of it in a remote setup. ......

C# If Else Shortcut
Recently I participated in a local user group challenge which involved submitting a project that solved a problem with the fewest bytes. My end solution resulted in one long line of code that at first glance seemed like a series of symbols and letters. While I wouldn’t use such an approach in production code it was nice to go against everything I have been taught about naming and spacing. One optimization that we used was to simplify the if..then..else statement. In C# you could have the following ......

VB6 & MMMPack Workaround
So, I recently put up a post on using the MMMPack tool to help package old VB6 projects so that they work in Vista and Windows 7. I am a real fan of this tool because it saves me a ton of time.\ Recently though I needed to re-setup my machine to get the whole thing working properly and came across a few little gremlins that come with beta products. So I downloaded the latest MMMPack from their website and when using the tool on my project I got the following error. “Application has failed to start ......

TechEd South Africa
So it has been a great few days at TechEd South Africa. There were a few things that stood out. First of all, I couldn’t help but be inspired by Tim Huckaby’s presentations. While they were not technically deep, they gave me a sense of something to strive for. There were a few times during his presentation that I found myself saying in my mind - “Man, we can do that stuff, if only we had the budget”. Well, I guess that isn’t an excuse and so I feel like the bar has been raised from a UI point. Other ......

Modelling Disruption – Probably one of the best podcasts I have heard for a long time!
So, I listen to podcasts allot… it started with DNR and now I have number of tech podcasts that I listen to regularly. What I have found with most of them is that they follow the same thread and same topics which means it can get boring at times. So it is refreshing when you come across one that is totally different and useful and that expands your perspective. That’s what happened with the latest podcast of TechZing – show 76 titled Thomas Thurston / Modelling Disruption. What I liked about this ......

Still no DotNetRocks Mug – but GWB Shirt Rocks!
So it has been almost two years since I had my letter read out on Dot Net Rocks. Richard & Carl promised to send me a mug – it was the going to be the highlight of the quarter and bragging rights in the office… but… the mug never came… ;-( I tried emailing them to find out if they sent it, but no response. After my second email and a year of waiting I eventually came to grips with the fact that I would continue to be using my plain white mug… Then yesterday I got a note from the Post Office that ......
