Geeks With Blogs

News
About Me:
I am a Female SharePoint Developer (a platinum unicorn). I have been working with SharePoint since I attended the Portal University in 2005. I hold a BA in Computer Science from the University of Missouri - Kansas City. I love playing Rockband, organizing user group meetings, working with code, attending events as a speaker or organizer, and having bizarre conversations about geek things with cool people. If you have any comments or questions fill out the contact form and I will try my best to help.

devLink…Inexpensive Conference Worth your Dollar…
Are you a developer? There are so many dev conferences out there, but I found out about this one a few months ago. I am speaking on SharePoint and Silverlight at devLink in Nashville. The conference lasts about 3 days from August 13th to the 15th in Nashville, TN (as Rob Foster says NashVegas). I am looking at the speakers from the .Net Community (and SharePoint) and some notable mentions would be Claudio Lassala, Jessica Moss, Steve Andrews, Clint Edmonson, Rob Foster, Eric Shupps, Jeremy Sublett, ......

Why Change Control Systems are Good...
I did something stupid against all my beliefs and should have never done it. I tried to deploy something on Friday. It was the dumbest mistake. First off I had no idea what type of master pages were in the environment. I assumed there was only one master page in the entire environment and I used the most disgustingly wrong program for a developer, SharePoint Designer. I pasted in this fix for AJAX Update Panels with FireFox (<script type='text/javascript'>_... = document.forms[0].action; ......

SSWUG.org Online Conference
I am really late in posting about this event with all the craziness. I am participating in an online conference hosted by the SQL Server World User Group. It is strictly an online conference. I will be speaking about Introduction to Feature Design, Visually Designing Webparts, and Dazzling SharePoint with Silverlight. Chris Regan, one of the managing partners at B&R, will be speaking at the same event. For further details (dates, other topics, etc...) you can click on this link: http://www.vconferenceonlin... ......

Coders 4 Charity:Why do I want to give my time?
Last year I had a great experience giving my time to charities for three days in Kansas City. If you have been reading my blog for a while you know that I attended last year's event. You know that my team created a WSS Site for the Boy Scouts in Blue Springs, Missouri. This year I am challenging you to come and try to beat us, because yes all of us will be back. We will be teaming up for the event again. We could use some competition. The other big thing I wanted to blog about is we are trying to ......

Kansas City Day of Dot Net - Some Thoughts...
As most of you know my blog posts are a little random and more towards free writing. I just think and write. So today the Kansas City Day of Dot Net took place at Centriq. I was freaking out a little bit, because I wanted it to succeed so bad. I was afraid that being our first event here in the past ten year that no one would show up. From what I understand Lee Brandt was thinking the same thing. This event was solely born from his idea that we needed to plan more events in Kansas City. He did a ......

Day of Dot Net Needs the SharePoint Lovens
So finally Kansas City gets a Code Camp and we get an entire SharePoint Track (so I hope) on Saturday, December 6th. I am hoping that we can get together at least 5 sessions. So far Todd Kitta (the MOSS Gone Wild Guy) has offered up his services and he will be bringing his family (including the new baby I hope). So what I ask from you guys is that if you want to speak and you are local or not even local drop me an e-mail. Kansas City needs love too. We have Barbecue, the Nelson Atkins Art Museum, ......

Vista and VPC 2007: Bug or No Bug?
I was using VPC 2007 on Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit for the first time last week. I was creating some user documentation for my new job. I noticed that even with sharing turned on for my C Drive I could not save any files from the VPC to my C Drive. I heard there was really no Vista and VPC 2007 support, so I decided to start experimenting as per usual (don't try this at home I have broken more VPC's than anyone within the SharePoint Community I bet). So I found this Public area on the C Drive ......

KC .Net User Group Meeting Tonight
One of my fellow Coders 4 Charity Groupmates, Lee Brandt, will be speaking about Test Driven Development using C# tonight. If you are in town you must come. If you are not in town and you want to come. Well hop on a flight? Anyway, here is the official information *commenses brainwashing tactics*: Topic: TDD Using C# Test-Driven development is a methodology that can help developers write solid, well-designed code. Very few developers practice it because very few understand how it works and how to ......

How to Upgrade from SQL Express to SQL Enterprise Edition
I was using a VPC today, so that I could restore our content database and keep a copy of our SharePoint instance for development. I noticed that SQL Express only allows about 3-4 gb of data in a database. That wouldn't work out considering our Content DB is 21.9 GB. So I need to find a way to upgrade the SQL Server instace to SQL Enterprise Edition. I did some research and some tweaking and figured it out. If you open up a command prompt window and type in this information: start /wait C:\setup.exe ......

How I Got an Ajax Progress Bar to Work in SharePoint
So I did not really use multithreading...I went with Ajax instead and I used a button click event. We decided that we wanted to ask the users if they are sure they want to create the site before actually creating the site. It was so much easier in Ajax as you will see in the steps below: First off you want to download and install the ASP .Net 2.0 Ajax Extensions 1.0 from here: http://asp.net/ajax/downloa... Next you are going to need to change the web .config a little bit on your IIS Entry for the ......

Progress Bar Made Easy in .Net 3.5
I have no idea how to incorporate this into a web part or get a web user control to function, because this is based off of .Net 3.0 and VSEWSS 1.1 is based off of .Net 2.0. Here is how you would include a progress bar in an ASP .Net 3.5 Application or Web User Control: <%@ Control Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="TestingAjax.ascx.cs" Inherits="TestingAjax" %> <asp:ScriptManager ID="ScriptManager1" runat="server"> </asp:ScriptManager> <asp:UpdatePanel ID="UpdatePanel1" ......

The Lazy Web Parts
I was doing some documentation today on this site that is part of a collection of customized sites. It has JavaScript (yuck) and web parts galore. I get to this site that deals with Affiliated Items for this particular site and I notice that there are 5 web parts. I am wondering why do you need 5 web parts when you take in a query string and provide a list of items. What you really only need is a Query String Web Part connected to another Web Part or a Web Part that reads the Query String. For some ......

Hopping on Five Hundred Feet from Behind the Silverlight Train
I know I'm a little slow in doing so, but today I finally sat down and went through all the Silverlight 2.0 Beta 1.0 Templates. I was incredibly impressed with some of it and sorely disappointed with other parts. Everyone has said it is really easy to use this technology and I agree. I have a little PhotoShop experience from my web design days. I have dabbled in some animated gifs, Flash Creations, PDF Creations, Corel Draw, Paint .Net, and who knows what else. I opened up the VS 2008 Template and ......

Kansas City .Net User Group Meeting
Tonight is the Kansas City .Net User Group Meeting at Centriq Foss in Leawood, Kansas. The meeting should start around 6:00 pm. The topic is MVC in ASP .Net and Doug Butscher, Jeff Julian, and John Alexander should be speaking tonight. So if you can attend I would highly recommend it. WPF, WCF, and WF and SharePoint Cert Classes/Books/Reference Materials
I am looking around on the net for some classes for WPF, WCF, and WF plus any type of certification classes for the Microsoft Office SharePoint Server Tests. I want to try and pass at least one certification exam for MOSS by the middle of the year. I would also like to learn more information and start writing my own work flows. I know barely anything about WPF, except that it looks really nice. I bet that I could make some really snazzy webparts implementing this technology. I'm not the most awesome ......
