I am a 26 year old female SharePoint Enthusiast. I work for B&R Business Solutions from my home in Olathe, KS. I have been working with SharePoint since I attended the Portal University in 2005. I hold a BA in Computer Science from the University of Missouri - Kansas City. I love playing Rockband, organizing user group meetings, working with MOSS, attending Code Camps as a speaker, and having bizarre conversations about geek things with cool people. The Wandering Escapades of the MOSSLover

I must be nuts, because in 6 days (we counted to verify) I was at 8 different airports with connections.  Here is a list of every airport I hit:
Kansas City
Dallas Fort Worth
Jacksonville
La Guardia
Philadelphia
Atlanta
Dallas Love Field
San Antonio
Here is a list of all the people that I can remember seeing:
AC
John Holliday
David Broussard
Tom Resing
Jason Quesada (totally random but a Booz Allen guy)
Bob Fox
Chris Regan
Tom Daly
Lee Brandt (yeah he picked me up at the airport but I count it)
Jay Medero
Josh Medero
Michael Lotter
Mark Miller
Susan Lennon (and her crew)
Arthur Brost
Dan Attis
Aron Cutlip
Inna Gordin
Steve Walker
Talbot Crowell
John Stover
Dennis Bottjer
Dux Raymond Sy
Errin O'Connor
Travis Lingenfelder
If I don't remember you I am very sorry.  I don't remember half of what happened in those 6 days, because they were jam packed...The icing on the cake was definitely watching Chris Regan and Joel Oleson singing at a Japanese Karaoke place in Manhattan.  There were good parts and sad parts when me and AC thought my hard drive died.  I had to get a screw driver open it up and AC helped me revive the on/off switch.  I don't think many people can say they saw Jacksonville's Skyline, the next day saw Manhattan's Skyline, then a couple days later ended up seeing the Alamo...That was incredible.  I will never ever do this again in my lifetime, unless somehow we change it all with different European Country Names and there is partying, beaches, and casual drinking involved.  Two user group meets sandwiching in between an even is never fun.  As I usually say there are no regrets whatsoever.  Now back to chilling and relaxing, because I know there will be lots of debugging fun times tomorrow.

Silverlight Demos and Slides (most updated versions)

I finally had an entire day of sitting at home where I did not have to pack.  I put my slides and my demos on Sky Drive, including the Linq to XML information with the XML file databinding commented out and the webservice code (using WCF).  Here is the slide link: http://cid-8e2654c5f01e6069.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Presentations/Silverlight%20Development%20in%20Sharepoint.pptx.  Here are the demos: http://cid-8e2654c5f01e6069.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/CodeSamples/SilverlightDemos.zip.  I am not going to update my VM to .Net 3.5, because I have another couple of presentations.  Enjoy everyone!

SSWUG.org Online Conference

I am really late in posting about this event with all the craziness.  I am participating in an online conference hosted by the SQL Server World User Group.  It is strictly an online conference.  I will be speaking about Introduction to Feature Design, Visually Designing Webparts, and Dazzling SharePoint with Silverlight.  Chris Regan, one of the managing partners at B&R, will be speaking at the same event.  For further details (dates, other topics, etc...) you can click on this link: http://www.vconferenceonline.com/shows/spring09/sharepoint/.

Kansas City Office Geeks March Meeting Goodness (A KC SharePoint User Group)

Presenter: Dave Smith

Topic: Introduction to InfoPath Forms Services

Bio:
Dave has over 15 years in Information Technology.  Starting with a Lotus Notes Partner, Dave gained an understanding of the value of E-Forms and Collaborative tools.  Later, he developed Exchange Public Folder applications using Excel and Word as E-Forms.  Dave was chosen by Ingram's magazine to serve on its IT Outlook Forum two years in a row while running one of the largest Microsoft Partners in Kansas City.  While most of his career has been in Operations, Sales and Marketing Management Dave is a closet Geek and an InfoPath/SharePoint fanatic.

Sponsor: Advantage Tech

Registration Link: https://www.clicktoattend.com/invitation.aspx?code=135848

So far we have 30 people registered for the event.  I am thinking we will be raising the attendance bar with this event.  We have a really good topic for next month too.  Bob Davis is going to talk about Knowledge Management.  This year we are going to have mainly local speakers.  People keep rolling in and asking to speak at the user group, rather than going out and having to e-mail a ton of random people.  It is a really strong year for the Office Geeks.  I'm hoping we can pack the room this year.

The Bad Seed: Battling with Corrupt SharePoint Lists

I had a bug that I worked on for two days.  If anyone read my tweets for the past few days they would notice that I wanted to rip my hair out.  All my webpart form did was refresh the page.  It would not write to the SharePoint Logs or push an error with a Debug.Write Statement.  I have a lot of poofy curly hair and I wanted to pull it out of my head piece by piece.  Finally I decided to do some last resort debugging, by writing to one of the textboxes to see where the item failed.  I noticed that the CAML Query for one of the lists was failing for no good reason.  I re-created the list using the STP file off our dev box and renamed it.  Changed the code constant for the list name and bam! it worked perfectly fine...Something about the list was corrupt...A field or the actual list.  So moral of the story is error handling in that case is almost nothing.  The try/catch block was not even working.  It was almost as if there was no try/catch block.  Sometimes SharePoint can be nutty, hopefully someone else doesn't fall into this trap.  If you have a CAML Query in your click event and for some reason it is failing with no error check all the lists attached to your code.  Later guys.

Coders 4 Charity:Why do I want to give my time?

Last year I had a great experience giving my time to charities for three days in Kansas City.  If you have been reading my blog for a while you know that I attended last year's event.  You know that my team created a WSS Site for the Boy Scouts in Blue Springs, Missouri.  This year I am challenging you to come and try to beat us, because yes all of us will be back.  We will be teaming up for the event again.  We could use some competition.

The other big thing I wanted to blog about is we are trying to find charities.  If you know any charities that are too poor in the area to afford developer help to create websites.  Fill out the blog contact form and give me some information about the charity.  It has to be a project that we can create in three days and most likely a web project.  Also, if you want to sponsor the event I can send your information along.

The website for charities, developers, designer, and dbas to sign up at is http://coders4charities.org/.  It was definitely worth my time and experience.  I will continue to attend this event as long as I live in Kansas City.  I met a lot of good people too.  Lee Brandt, Tim Wright, Blake Theiss, and Joe Loux...I've hung out with Lee a lot this past year.  He is a really great friend.  Tim is really awesome too.  He's going to help me with my Silverlight Search Control.  Seriously would have never met them had I not attended the event.  Anyway, that's all I have for you tonight, so sign up:)

SharePoint Saturday Kansas City - My Day of Endurance

For anyone new I met yesterday I probably don't remember your name I am really sorry.  You see yesterday I was pushing myself to the limit in a couple of weeks and my body was not all too happy.  When I got home I watched an episode of House with my boyfriend and called it a night sometime around 11 pm.  I never go to bed before midnight and I was exhausted and passed right out until 12 pm the next day.  Today I am going to be taking it easy, so I can start coding again on Monday.  I will not be running any marathons or running around for a while, because officially I had a sinus infection and bronchitis.  The doctor told me it's going to take a while for me to fully recover from either.

So officially for me the event started on Friday night with the speaker/volunteer dinner.  We had about 20 people or so show up to the dinner and I got some of the print outs that night (thanks Chad).  Haitham showed me the name badges and they looked really good.  I'm going to wear mine to all SharePoint Saturday events from now on to show people that I am truly the "Head Geek" (no idea what that means:).  So Mark Slavin from Idera made his presentation and I saw a couple tools for backup and recovery and such.  Even a performance monitoring tool for SharePoint, but was more trying to pay attention to not coughing.  Afterwards there was a lot of coughing that happened.  Then when I get home there is an e-mail in my inbox from one of the speakers.  The guy doing the 101 sessions was completely sick.  So what I did was call Brian and then talk it over for a minute. I ended up calling another volunteer Bob and he did the sessions like a pro.  I hear he was excellent.  He gets a special thank you for doing it on such short notice.  That night I was working on creating a site collection, turning on search, and creating a SSP for my presentation VM.  That way Bob could have something to use for his sessions.  I saw a House episode that night and went to bed (I was behind two episodes).

The next day (day of the event), I actually woke up and and had an e-mail in our inbox for SharePoint Saturday KC from another speaker canceling.  Earlier this week Michael Lotter canceled, so I had shoved grab bag in his sessions.  At that point I e-mailed the speakers and people were like do your Silverlight session (in hindsight I need to improve just a bit).  So I put myself down, although I had been coughing like an insane person and I still sounded horribly wispy and nasal.  I got to the event site at 6:30 am and Leslie (Trainer at Centriq) opened the doors at 6:45 or so.  Mark from Idera and John Stover had arrived around this time and helped carry a ton of things (thanks guys).  John checked all the projectors too, so we knew that they worked.  It was great early on everyone took the tables and decorated them (sponsorwise).  All the speakers kind of trickled in at the times they needed to be there.  We only had a couple major hiccups that will be addressed at the next event:

  • The doors at Centriq locked at noon and no one had any idea how to fix that problem, so we had to put up a sign.
  • No soda came with the lunch (and it was supposed to), so we had to go out and buy some soda.
  • The rooms were too small (going to have to find a bigger venue next time, even though we really love Centriq.  We'll still use it for Office Geeks).
  • We need to have a microphone and a place to do a welcome, because there really wasn't a good spot to fit 135 people.

Overall we got really good reviews and we are going to meet Wednesday to talk about what was good and what was bad.  Then perhaps start throwing off ideas for the next event.  The volunteers, speakers, and sponsors all seemed pretty awesome.  To pull together 135 people and get a great response was a combination of everyone's combined efforts.  Everyone says I started the idea here, but I could never have pulled off an event without all these people:

  • Haitham Gosheh
  • Nidal Gosheh
  • Brian Laird
  • Joyce Laird
  • Lee Brandt
  • Jana Unruh
  • Scott Robinson
  • Michael Lotter
  • Susan Lennon
  • Chad Clarke
  • Howard Davy (dude I hope you're better)
  • Shawn McCubbin
  • Bob Davis (dude gets a platinum star for stepping up at the last minute)
  • Kevin Shaffer

As I said before also all the speakers and sponsors...Now I need many days to relax and process and fully recover from my sinubronchitis...I'll catch you all later.

Jacksonville Office Geeks The Last Stand

So Jacksonville Office Geeks is going to draw it's last breathe on Thursday, February, 19th at 6 pm.  I get to be the last person to present at the first SharePoint User Group to be dubbed Office Geeks.  My topic is another Silverlight and SharePoint Presentation, however by that time I will be unveiling my search control using webservices or WCF that I will start work on Sunday.  If you want to sign up to see my presentation here is the Click to Attend Link: https://www.clicktoattend.com/invitation.aspx?code=132889
Remember if you missed every other Jacksonville Office Geeks meeting it's a good time to attend, because well there won't be any more.  Would you really like to say that you never attended this awesome user group in it's life span?  I mean come on seriously you know you want to register.  I may or may not bring a special bonus prize too (no I'm not telling you what it is).  Doesn't the mystery make you want to come alone?  Click it...Click it...Click it...
Anyway, if you are there I'll see you there, otherwise I won't?
Catch you all later.  The road to recovery is paved with polar bears, coughing, and much nasal congestion....
