Speaking at St. Louis .Net User Group Monday

I will be speaking at the St. Louis .Net User Group About Silverlight on Monday, October 27th at 6 pm.  Like the Kansas City .Net User Group they start at 5:30, but it looks like they go until 7:30.  It looks like the group holds office at Three city Place Suite 1100 in Creve Coeur, Missouri.  Here is my bio and abstract:

The Dazzling World of Silverlight using XAML and Expression Blend
Silverlight is the shiny new tool that both Developers and Designers can use in harmony. In Expression Studio Designers can create Silverlight layouts without affecting the code behind files. In Visual Studio 2008 Developers can access the layout files that designers created and add code events. In this session we will discuss the tools involved to develop Silverlight Applications. We will dive into some XAML Code and Expression Blend tutorials that will leaving you with a taste to create more rich applications for the web.

Becky Isserman has been a SharePoint Developer, since 2005 when she went through the Portal University with Levi, Ray, and Shoup in Springfield, IL. She is an Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) and a Microsoft Certified Application Developer (MCAD). She has been a web designer/developer since she was fifteen hand coding HTML 3.0 websites in NotePad. She enjoys working with SharePoint 2007, because she can perform the roles of administrator, developer, designer, and architect. She has presented at five code camps, two conferences, and three user groups in 2008. She currently lives in Olathe, Kansas for B&R Solutions. She lives with her two cats, Gambit and Rogue, plus her boyfriend, Johnny. If you would like to contact her you can e-mail her at rebecca.isserman@gmail.com or fill out the contact form at her blog http://www.mosslover.com.

If anyone in St. Louis wants to get together and play some Rockband or meet up I think I'm going to try and work from my friend Leah's house through Thursday.  However, if anyone wants to hang out for dinner she has claimed me for most dinners, especially Wednesday which is her 25th birthday.

IPhone Siddur Application Weirdness

So I finally went out got the IPhone and love it so much.  I ended up not killing At&t and getting it an entire day early without getting charged.  I downloaded  a ton of different applications for music and tweeting and such.  There some things I don't quite like, but will deal with as time progresses and get used to the quirks:

For example, I must have really big fingers and continuously hit the wrong buttons.  It drives me insane, but it is still far superior to text messaging on my horrible old Razr VXXX.  It still beats the Razr battery life by ten fold.  I ran music for two days and various apps and it took me quite a while to kill the battery.  So moving on with the other things that really irritate me ever so slightly.  Nothing else really...Honestly, there are some sticking issues, but it only happens occasionally.

It is so weird to go from two devices to one whole new device with shiny colors and features.  I feel like I have upgraded from the Dark Ages.  I am the use things forever type, so I ran that Razr into the ground.  I haven't run my old brick of an IPod into the ground yet.  It's old school 3rd or 4th gen click wheel without any color.  Seeing the album covers is so bizarre.  It's like being in a whole new world.  Being able to scroll through the album covers like on Itunes is amazing.  I haven't tried the video out yet, but I am itching to check out some video podcasts.  I was so envious of Johnny (my boyfriend) for the past year with his Touch.  He would show me all these awesome videos and I couldn't do that on my old IPod.  Overall I give it an A rating.

Now getting to the weirdness factor...I was looking for a good Jewish Application for the holidays and kept stumbling upon this Siddur Application.  Eventually, I googled HebCal for the IPhone and find this guy RustyBrick or Barry Schwartz's Blog.  I'm wondering how do I remember this guy's name he seems so familiar.  Then I remember about this: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=yisha&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=.  This guy was the first ever to propose to someone via Search Engine.  Even more of a coincidence he proposed to one of my elementary school classmates, Yisha Tversky.  I always thought life was full of coincidences and the world was very small.  It feels very small.  How often do you run into this kind of stuff?  Well you guys all know i'm a Twitter Nut, so I had to look him up and follow him on Twitter.  I have also sent in a pending request to be a Facebook friend.  His blog is going on my Omea Reader list.  I might also purchase his program too, because it looks so cool.  Who wouldn't want to own the Aleinu in an application?  Anyway, that is all the insanity I will give you guys for today.  I hope you all are having a nice weekend.  It's pretty here in Kansas and tomorrow I get my wireless instruments for Rockband 2.

Btw, I have decided to give away my second copy of Rockband 2 at the KC Day of Dot Net.  If I am feeling really nice I might throw in my old instruments if whoever wins does not have them.

Upcoming Events and Insightful Post of the Week

I am sorry for the lack of blog love.  I am going to try very hard to post something awesome once a week.  I have a couple birthdays upcoming, including my friend Leah's and my boyfriend Johnny's.  I also have a Silverlight Presentation at the St. Louis .Net User Group on October 27th, then the Kansas City Office Geeks will be meeting on November 6th with a presentation on SharePoint Updates by JD Wade.  In between I believe I am going to try and give a how to write a custom wildcard search in SharePoint talk at the Raleigh Code Camp.  Then there is the Day of Dot Net planning fun times (thank you Lee and Clint for getting this together).  That takes us to about Chanukah time and my 5th anniversary with my boyfriend.  It's a pretty busy time and I need to write 2.5 more book chapters.  One of which I have outlined and need to crack down and write in the next few days (really hard writing stuff high level as a dev).  I told you guys I was going to post something insightful once a week, so here here is a SharePoint Tip:

So today I was working with a web part debugging it.  I see this error message that tells me I cannot access "Microsoft.SharePoint.Security.SharePointPermission".  It turns out this is a Code Access Security Error and if you see this message you need to go into your web .config file and set the trust level to "Full".

On a side note, Saturday in the afternoon/morning Becky finally gets here IPhone.  Aside from doing other random things she will be downloading tons of applications and buying pretty cases and other accessories.  Anyway have a nice night guys...

Day of Dot Net Needs the SharePoint Lovens

So finally Kansas City gets a Code Camp and we get an entire SharePoint Track (so I hope) on Saturday, December 6th.  I am hoping that we can get together at least 5 sessions.  So far Todd Kitta (the MOSS Gone Wild Guy) has offered up his services and he will be bringing his family (including the new baby I hope).  So what I ask from you guys is that if you want to speak and you are local or not even local drop me an e-mail.  Kansas City needs love too.  We have Barbecue, the Nelson Atkins Art Museum, John Alexander (the coolest guy around), and oodles of Midwestern hospitality.  So what are you guys waiting for?  Seriously...Contact Form...Now...

Tulsa Techfest 2008

This was my second official conference and first time that I did two presentations.  I had a blast playing Rockband and meeting a lot of Oklahomans, Texans, Arkansans, and other assorted peoples.  If anyone is curious my slide decks are available at http://www.codeplex.com/mosslover.  If you have any questions or comments I'm here to answer them.  I am not sure yet how Silverlight version 2.0 will affect the SharePoint and Silverlight Presentation.  I will try to play around with the new version in the upcoming weeks and blog about what happens when you use the new shiny things.

So my take on this second conference I was kind of drunk on the whole microphone/huge projector for my second presentation.  It was like some insane power trip that you don't normally get to have.  I wasn't expecting to present in such a huge auditorium like that.  Caleb Jenkins is my hero, because that dude saved my presentation.  I was freaking out, because I could not find the power attachment for my Western Digital Hard Drive.  He went out and found Tim Rayburn had the correct attachment and my demos worked perfect.  Ironically, it was my AJAX and SharePoint Presentation that was the worst of the two.  I think that I am going to retire the AJAX Presentation, because I think 8-10 goes at it is enough.  I added some AJAX Control Toolkit information for SharePoint and still it lasted about 40 minutes of the 1 1/2 hours.  I am definitely glad I went to this conference.  I will be attending next year if time permits.  It looks like the next time around Yom Kippur will fall in September and not October.  Look towards the middle of next year for some announcements based on Dallas Techfest.  I promised that I would help Tim Rayburn get some of us SharePoint people out to Dallas.

Silverlight RC0 and Blueprints

So I followed to the core Phil Wickland's Hello World! Silverlight and SharePoint blog postings here:
http://philwicklund.com/default.aspx.  I figured downloading all the templates for RC0 would work perfectly fine.  No it did not I had to uninstall and remove all the dll files from my GAC.  When I used the Silverlight 2 Beta 2 templates and information everything worked perfectly fine.  So for right now do not use RC0, instead use 2 Beta 2.
After I had that issue I went through the blueprints for SharePoint and guess what.  I still have issues.  I tried opening up the Visual Studio 08 files and compiling them.  The second project would not attach, so I could not get them to compile.  I tried doing some fixes with no luck.  Luckily today there is a guy at Techfest that knows some of the product team.  He said if I have any more issues I can e-mail him.  Has anyone out there made these work?  If so, did you need to do anything special?
I'm hitting bed I barely churned this out.  I think I spoke to some people on messenger barely remember what I said.  Night everyone.

Disaster Recovery Book and Stuff...

Thanks everyone for the encouragement...I have about three more chapters and John has about one more to write for the book (yeah I'm the slacker).  At the end of the weekend early next week I'm hoping to make that two chapters and then the week after than only one...It's coming along pretty nicely.  If anyone is interested in pre-ordering here is the link: http://www.amazon.com/SharePoint-2007-Disaster-Recovery-Guide/dp/1584505990/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1223191459&sr=8-1.  I know that a few people had commented or e-mailed me and I never responded.

I am all over the place coming up with new things to do.  I am going to be getting involved with Tech Masters in KC and ramping up on recruiting more people for the Office Geeks.  I still want to do the comic and start a student initiative at a few universities in the area so that we can get more college kids involved in user groups.  If anyone has talked to me I kind of want to get kids involved by doing some form of ride share program.  I also want to speak at a couple universities to spread the word about user groups.  I know when I was in college nobody told me about all the great community stuff.  I didn't find out until sometime early on in 2007.  Look at all the positive things that happened in my life:

  • I quit World of Warcraft
  • Got an awesome job working with the product that I love
  • I'm writing a book
  • I became a user group leader
  • I started playing Rockband (.Net User Group Installfest was the first time I played)
  • I met a lot of good people (Lee Brandt, Scott Spradlin, Paul Galvin, Rob Foster, Jeff Julian, John Alexander, Doug Butscher, Michael Lotter...)
  • I spoke at a conference
  • I spoke at a couple code camps
  • I got to visit a couple cool places, including Maine, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Washington D.C.

I guess the only thing that sucks about this year I realized last week.  To go to the code camps and conferences I had some help, but I paid for some stuff out of pocket.  That meant that I had no time to visit St. Louis once a month, so I went every three months or so.  I kind of lost a lot of time with my friends.  I kept in touch somewhat on the phone and im, but it's just not the same as I saw last week when I went to St. Louis.  I miss Leah the most.  We were both kind of the outcasts from high school.  I guess what I learned the most this past year is that you need to find the group of people where you fit in.  I feel like I fit in within the SharePoint Community and it's kind of nice.  I don't regret anything I did this past year.  I will probably do even more later on this year and in the upcoming year.  I am going to try to at least speak once a month in 2009.  I want to try and speak at two conferences and maybe 10 code camps or user groups.  After the book is finished I am going to start working on my comic, the college student user group stuff, and then maybe help out with some ISPA stuff.

As for speaking engagements I am attending Tulsa Techfest next week (two cans of food a day or $2 and you get to see me speak twice, plus Michael Lotter and the SharePoint Cowboy, Eric Shupps).  I am trying to get into the Tampa Code Camp and Raleigh Code Camps in November and December.  I am going to try to hit up the Jacksonville Office Geeks in February and maybe the Best Practices Conference (if I get in that means I'm down one conference and need to find another).  If anyone has a good idea for a speaking engagement let me know.  I like to hit code camps in areas that I love or areas that I have never been.  One of my best friends really wants me in Salt Lake City next year and another one wants me to go to Portland.  I have never been to either state.  Anyway, I know the really cool code samples have been light lately.  I should have something in the next few weeks in store with my Silverlight and AJAX Demos.  If not I'll try and play around with some stuff for fun.  I get a little antsy if I don't touch code for too long.  I'll catch you all later.

Listen to the SharePoint Pod Show

I need to give a shout out to the SharePoint Pod Show, because it is another resource you guys could utilize aside from blogs.  It is an entire podcast dedicated to SharePoint.  Here is the URL: http://www.sharepointpodshow.com.  So far they have an interview with Eric Shupps, one with Robert Bogue, and an old interview with Patrick Tisseghem.  They cover such topics as governance, design for performance, and enterprise search.  I think that Rob Foster has a really good speaking presence and for anyone discouraged by sound quality rumors they just upgraded there equipment.  So seriously why not download the seven podcasts?
