4 Years Ago this Weekend…

In January 0f 2009 something crazy and awesome happened for me, SharePoint Saturday was born. I was a 26 year old girl from Saint Louis Missouri who was living in Olathe, KS. About 5 month prior I went to the most pivotal event in my career and life in Washington DC, the Regional SharePoint Conference, where I met Michael Lotter, Paul Galvin, Tony Lanni, Bob Fox, and Rachel Appel. Several months later I was visiting Michael at a code camp in Raleigh North Carolina and he told me we’re going to have ......

HTML 5: Predictions for the Future of Silverlight in SharePoint

I’m not sure I have ever thrown this down in writing. I probably have said this 800 or 900 times, but I think that HTML 5 in SharePoint 2010 sucks. The support is terrible in the two most prevalent web browsers at the enterprise level – Internet Explorer and Firefox. If you can’t even get the video tag to work in IE 9 or the latest version of Firefox then that’s a huge fail for the product with HTML 5. What I think needs to be done in the product to improve HTML 5 support so that we can move towards ......

Silverlight, My Love, Please Don’t Go Away

Occasionally I write a rant or two and this one has been boiling for ages. First off you need to read Mike Watson’s Blog Post on Silverlight Ambiguity in Office 365: http://jmikewatson.wordpres... So now let’s get started. First off this post has been boiling since I have heard the question in one of my sessions last year “What do you think will happen to Silverlight now that HTML 5 exists?”. I brushed it aside. I ignored it when ......

South Florida Code Camp and Other Events

My grandmother wanted me to make her a video when she heard I got MVP in SharePoint Server of one of my sessions. I decided I haven’t visited in two years, so maybe I can do an in person session. I googled around and found South Florida Code Camp, which will be Saturday, February 12th. I will be doing a session at 9:50 in the morning on Silverlight just for my grandmother and whoever shows up. Here is the link for more information: http://www.fladotnet.com/co... National Give Camp Weekend - January 14-16, 2011

What is a Give Camp? I get asked this question constantly in the SharePoint Community. About 3 years ago there was an event called "We Are Microsoft" in Dallas, TX. A lady named, Toi Wright, gathered up a bunch of charities and gathered up a bunch of IT Professionals in the community. They met for an entire weekend devising better ways to help these charities with 3 days projects. None of these charities had in house IT staff or they were lacking. The time these projects would save would help out ......

2011 The Year of Awesomesauce

So I was talking to one of my friends, Cathy Dew, and I’m wondering how to start out this post. What kind of title should I put? Somehow we’re just randomly throwing things out and this title pops into my head the one you see above. I woke up today to the buzz of a text message. I spent New Years laying around until 3 am watching Warehouse 13 Episodes and drinking champagne. It was one of the best New Year’s I spent with my boyfriend and my cat. I figured I would sleep in until Noon, but ended up ......

Come One Come All To Best Practices Conference

Why is it important you attend the Best Practices Practices Conference? I can’t vouch for everyone, but I think my sessions will be great (and all the other speaker’s sessions as well). One of them is something I’ve been working on in concept for at least 6 months. This session is called Building A Rich Media Application in Silverlight. The second I saw the tools for webcam and video integration I thought how can we incorporate this into SharePoint? How cool would it be if you could record a netcast ......

Best Practices Conference, Women in SharePoint, and Live Blogging

I’ve been quiet lately for many reasons, such as SharePoint Saturday New York and heavy amounts of travel due to funerals and family events and life. So I think a lot of you have been wondering what is this Women in SharePoint thing? How does it fit into the community? Well, there are five of us, Kathryn Birstein, Cathy Dew, Lori Gowin, Karuana Gitamu, and myself. A year ago from this past June I wrote a blog post how I felt being a woman in SharePoint. It feels great to live in this era, because ......

Houston We have a Problem with Silverlight Client OM…

So I was playing around with NavigationNodeCollection, which is basically like SPNavigationNodeCollection just to make sure it worked without a hitch…Here is a little sample snippet of what should work: Unfortunately, you get a nice little javascript error that does not allow you to access the child nodes. I tried a foreach() loop that gets a NavigationNode for each parent then loops through the NavigationNode.Children that did not work either. I threw in two ExecuteQueryAsync statements thinking ......

New York Area Community Stuff

I’ve been running around trying to find my place in the community not quite situated yet. This past Monday I attended a community social event where all the community leaders in the area got together and discussed upcoming plans for the year. It was a lot of fun and surprisingly interesting. I thought there would be a lot more people in attendance of this event. I always assumed this area had so many more people. That I would be this tiny itty bitty fish in a very large pond. It didn’t really feel ......

If Music Be the Food of Love, then Play On…

No this is not SharePoint or Silverlight related at all. Tomorrow is 09/09/09 and the Beatles, one of my favorite bands of all time aside from Green Day and Three Dog Night, are releasing there albums in digital format entirely remastered plus as a bonus Harmonix is releasing a special version of Rockband. I can probably throw away $60 for the game, but not so much the money for the remastered tracks. Growing up my dad was born in the 50’s, so his music was primary the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the ......

devLink…Inexpensive Conference Worth your Dollar…

Are you a developer? There are so many dev conferences out there, but I found out about this one a few months ago. I am speaking on SharePoint and Silverlight at devLink in Nashville. The conference lasts about 3 days from August 13th to the 15th in Nashville, TN (as Rob Foster says NashVegas). I am looking at the speakers from the .Net Community (and SharePoint) and some notable mentions would be Claudio Lassala, Jessica Moss, Steve Andrews, Clint Edmonson, Rob Foster, Eric Shupps, Jeremy Sublett, ......

Two Weeks…No Bed…

All right so I exaggerated slightly with the title, but I literally did not see my bed for two weeks. A couple weeks ago was Passover, so I flew to Florida to visit my grandmother. Nothing exciting really, but Passover and fixing bugs. Then my grandmother, her husband, and I flew to Philadelphia to see my cousins. We had a pretty full house. I stayed for about a week and drove into the New Jersey B&R Office. I also spoke at the Philadelphia Office Geeks about Silverlight 2.0 and SharePoint. It ......

Silverlight 3.0 and Extended Databinding with SharePoint Controls

I don't really have a break until after SharePoint Saturday D.C. Once the break occurs I am going to upgrade my VM with .Net 3.5 (finally get it to stick). Then I am going to write a WCF webservice that will pull data from profile services and search. Plus maybe some image library information for fun. I want to build a ton of controls using Silverlight as the front end and SharePoint as the back end. Check back here in about a month or so for some interesting experiments. I will probably post these ......

Coders 4 Charity:Why do I want to give my time?

Last year I had a great experience giving my time to charities for three days in Kansas City. If you have been reading my blog for a while you know that I attended last year's event. You know that my team created a WSS Site for the Boy Scouts in Blue Springs, Missouri. This year I am challenging you to come and try to beat us, because yes all of us will be back. We will be teaming up for the event again. We could use some competition. The other big thing I wanted to blog about is we are trying to ......

SharePoint Saturday Kansas City - My Day of Endurance

For anyone new I met yesterday I probably don't remember your name I am really sorry. You see yesterday I was pushing myself to the limit in a couple of weeks and my body was not all too happy. When I got home I watched an episode of House with my boyfriend and called it a night sometime around 11 pm. I never go to bed before midnight and I was exhausted and passed right out until 12 pm the next day. Today I am going to be taking it easy, so I can start coding again on Monday. Silverlight and SharePoint: Getting Started

So people are always asking me how do I get Silverlight to work in SharePoint? Then Paul Galvin and some other people told me why not post the steps. So here is what you want to do: Get Visual Studio 2008 and download SP1 from http://www.microsoft.com/do... Silverlight RC0 and Blueprints

So I followed to the core Phil Wickland's Hello World! Silverlight and SharePoint blog postings here: http://philwicklund.com/def... Tulsa School of Dev Rocked!!!

I had an incredible time in Tulsa. Things were a bit rocky at first, because Google gave me some bad directions for Friday night, so I turned around about 4 times just to get the 11th street exist from highway 64. I was a little disappointed with the Doubletree Inn, so I'm sticking with Hampton Inn from now on. $20 for a burger and Ore Ida fries that I could make on my grill at home is insane. Some of the people were really nice at the hotel, but some were just flat out rude. When it was time to ......

First off it rocked...Special thanks to Lee Brandt, Blake Thiess, Joe Loux, Timothy Wright, and John Alexander. These guys were my teammates and what I would consider some of my new friends. They are some of the best band-mates a girl could ask for in Rockband also. So here is a little bit of my experience in general: I was looking forward to this event for a month. I was incredibly excited, because I love helping a good cause and felt like I had not done enough to give back to the community. I love ......

I know I'm a little slow in doing so, but today I finally sat down and went through all the Silverlight 2.0 Beta 1.0 Templates. I was incredibly impressed with some of it and sorely disappointed with other parts. Everyone has said it is really easy to use this technology and I agree. I have a little PhotoShop experience from my web design days. I have dabbled in some animated gifs, Flash Creations, PDF Creations, Corel Draw, Paint .Net, and who knows what else. I opened up the VS 2008 Template and ......
