4 Years Ago this Weekend…

In January 0f 2009 something crazy and awesome happened for me, SharePoint Saturday was born. I was a 26 year old girl from Saint Louis Missouri who was living in Olathe, KS. About 5 month prior I went to the most pivotal event in my career and life in Washington DC, the Regional SharePoint Conference, where I met Michael Lotter, Paul Galvin, Tony Lanni, Bob Fox, and Rachel Appel. Several months later I was visiting Michael at a code camp in Raleigh North Carolina and he told me we’re going to have ......

After the Event: SharePoint Saturday NYC

So about a year ago Michael Lotter handed over the reigns to SharePoint Saturday New York City to Jason Gallicchio and myself. I had no real idea what this meant, because each city you run an event in is different. You have to learn the rules about that city. Kansas City I had to fight for speakers, sponsors, attendees, and volunteers. What I quickly learned about New York City is that I have a tiny amount of space and more people who would like to use it than I had the room for. If you look at the ......

New York I Love You/I Hate You...

New York City was always this fantasy far away that I couldn't touch. I'm not sure it's really New York, but a place that was outside of St. Louis. A place that was outside this whole midwestern bubble I lived in when I was a kid. All I had was school and baseball, because well everything else wasn't so great when I until after I turned 18. When I was 18 I had this really great summer and it felt like everything was changing. It was the beginning of my life. I had no idea what that summer meant, ......

National Give Camp Weekend - January 14-16, 2011

What is a Give Camp? I get asked this question constantly in the SharePoint Community. About 3 years ago there was an event called "We Are Microsoft" in Dallas, TX. A lady named, Toi Wright, gathered up a bunch of charities and gathered up a bunch of IT Professionals in the community. They met for an entire weekend devising better ways to help these charities with 3 days projects. None of these charities had in house IT staff or they were lacking. The time these projects would save would help out ......

One National Team One Event – SharePoint Saturday Kansas City

I wasn’t expect to run an event from 1,000 miles away, but some stuff happened you know like it does and I opted in. It was really weird, because people asked why are you living in NJ and running Kansas City? I did move, but it was like my baby and Karthik didn’t have the ability to do it this year. I found it really challenging, because I could not physically be in Kansas City. At first I was freaking out and Lee Brandt, Brian Laird, and Chris Geier offered to help. Somehow I couldn’t come the day ......

MOSSLover Lives On…

A while back, maybe 6 months, I got some bad news about 2010. Microsoft was removing Office from the MOSS equivalent of 2010, so basically my alias would be obsolete the second 2010 caught on in the community. I thought about it for some time. I had some discussions with friends in the community. I even noticed that the MOSSMan changed his twitter id. I started my blog around a WSS 3.0 project when I worked for LRS in there St. Louis Office in February/March 2007. So I think it’s fitting to keep ......

New York Area Community Stuff

I’ve been running around trying to find my place in the community not quite situated yet. This past Monday I attended a community social event where all the community leaders in the area got together and discussed upcoming plans for the year. It was a lot of fun and surprisingly interesting. I thought there would be a lot more people in attendance of this event. I always assumed this area had so many more people. That I would be this tiny itty bitty fish in a very large pond. It didn’t really feel ......

Three Weeks…

So I did it. I moved, I ran a SharePoint Saturday, and I attended a wedding. I can’t say everything went smoothly in the process, but I will say it all worked out for the best. I started out my stressful adventure a couple months ago with packing and changing everything over to the new address. Here is my account as best as I can describe it to you guys… I woke up on Friday, December 11th at about 6 am after sleeping on the floor with my boyfriend. The mover’s came at about 7 am to pack the pod. ......

SP2010 Knock Out Edition: What You Need to Know…

So I set out on a quest to install a SharePoint 2010 VM with Bob Davis, one of our 101 instructors for SharePoint Saturday Kansas City and a Co-Leader of the KC Office Geeks. We started around 5 pm and ended around 11 pm. Everything that could possible go wrong went wrong in triplicate. Here is a list of things you need to know: Turn on Virtualization in your bios: Bob did not have virtualization turned on in his bios, so the virtual machine I had stubbed out did not work. You need to make sure that ......

The Last UG Meeting…

I don’t think it’s fully hit me yet. This past Thursday was the last user group meeting of the year and the last meeting with me present as leader. Next week I am meeting with about 4 or 5 people to hand over the KC Office Geeks. Every so often I look back and reflect on where I have come in the past few years and how I got to this point in time. We have 177 people on the mailing list and an average from 15-20 people at each meeting. When Jeff handed off the group to me we were average 3 people per ......

Major Conference Cherry Popped…

So you are going to an event with 7,000 people that have similar interests to learn about a product that you have a vague idea about…I was excited prior to the event and nervous. I had a very bad week before the event. Every piece of technology that I brought with me to St. Louis broke. I had little sleep trying to get my code done and my technology to the point I started out with that Monday. Finally by Friday I was beat and hung out with my friends…On Saturday I went to Coders and everything after ......

What the SharePoint Community means to me…Maybe?

So I’ve blogged about this a lot. If you read my blog you know how I got started. Kansas City .Net User Group and walking up to the right person at the right time plus meeting the right people at the right events that just clicked as good people (Lee, Brian, Jeff, John, Tim, Michael). I guess looking back over the past 2 years (as of this month I believe?) in retrospect would be nice. I was pretty hardcore into World of Warcraft back then without many friends newly moved to Kansas City. Right now ......

Kansas City Office Geeks Meeting this Thursday

This month Howard Davy will be discussing SharePoint Designer Workflows. He was one of the volunteers for SharePoint Saturday Kansas City. He helped orchestrate the event with me and a ton of other people. As his day job he’s a SharePoint Trainer, so this should be a really good presentation. If you guys are in Kansas City and find SPD a little scary. I would show up just to see what it actually can do. We are meeting as usual this Thursday at 5:45 pm at Centriq (8700 Stateline, Leawood, KS 66206). ......

Becky…Who is Becky?

My name is Becky Isserman. Everyone in the Kansas City Community knew me as Becky before they even knew who MOSSLover was on the web. I didn’t even buy the domain until last year in April after the first event I attended, STL MOSS Camp. It’s really weird how much I’ve done and how far I’ve come since then. I swear I was ten times more nervous that first time. Who wouldn’t be with there dad in the room? When I was at DC I got up and I spoke and I fumbled ten times less. I can see the pay back for ......

Two Weeks…No Bed…

All right so I exaggerated slightly with the title, but I literally did not see my bed for two weeks. A couple weeks ago was Passover, so I flew to Florida to visit my grandmother. Nothing exciting really, but Passover and fixing bugs. Then my grandmother, her husband, and I flew to Philadelphia to see my cousins. We had a pretty full house. I stayed for about a week and drove into the New Jersey B&R Office. I also spoke at the Philadelphia Office Geeks about Silverlight 2.0 and SharePoint. It ......

Silverlight 3.0 and Extended Databinding with SharePoint Controls

I don't really have a break until after SharePoint Saturday D.C. Once the break occurs I am going to upgrade my VM with .Net 3.5 (finally get it to stick). Then I am going to write a WCF webservice that will pull data from profile services and search. Plus maybe some image library information for fun. I want to build a ton of controls using Silverlight as the front end and SharePoint as the back end. Check back here in about a month or so for some interesting experiments. I will probably post these ......

The Eagle has Landed…

I finally am home. I slept most of today, but I finally can say that my bed and I will be connecting. That’s right my king size pillow top will have a nice conversation for 7 hours tonight. A full 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep with Johnny at my side and Gambit laying right in the spot where I want to move my feet. So anyway to recap I started in Kansas City worked my way to Phoenix had a layover in Vegas flew red eye to Boston and got stuck in Newark before I ended up coming home. I saw Joel Oleson, ......

SP Tech Con So far...

So I've been in San Francisco for a few days to kind of write about some things I've done and seen. I wanted to kind of just write this out so I can process some of it while it's happening. I've met some really cool people so far one person, Barb, in particular seems pretty cool and really nice. Just the type of person you can sit with and kind of have a decent discussion. Really laid back incredibly smart and awesome. Not overly crazy. The other person I met who is insane, but I like is Neville ......

SharePoint Saturday

So it looks like the first SharePoint Saturday event will be this weekend. I have most of my demos and a few slides thrown together and ready. They have about 200 people signed up for the event. They had to cut off registration. I hope that we can get nearly as many people in Kansas City as they have in Virgnia Beach. I am getting so many session abstracts and will be cutting them off around January 16th at midnight. I have called so many different consulting firms in the area and heard the words ......

Why I Try and Help the Community...

So some of you have no idea who I am. I don't even know who I am sometimes. What self respecting 26 year old knows who they are. Anyway, I moved to Kansas City about a year and a half ago and I was depressed when I moved. I had just started to get involved with the St. Louis Jewish Community. I was going to go to start school again, but my job basically was we want to move you to Kansas City and we don't really have other options. I knew how it went. I was 24 years old. I had to move. My boyfriend ......

Kansas City Day of Dot Net - Some Thoughts...

As most of you know my blog posts are a little random and more towards free writing. I just think and write. So today the Kansas City Day of Dot Net took place at Centriq. I was freaking out a little bit, because I wanted it to succeed so bad. I was afraid that being our first event here in the past ten year that no one would show up. From what I understand Lee Brandt was thinking the same thing. This event was solely born from his idea that we needed to plan more events in Kansas City. He did a ......

That way the people in Kansas City interested in getting started with SharePoint get a little bit of an idea where to start. If you guys are interested in my Wildcard Search ......

Last Days and First Days

It's been a crazy ride over the past year and a half working at Terracon as the SharePoint Guru (that's what they started to call me because I fulfilled so many different roles). My last day was a little hectic yesterday, because I decided to stay and hang out with my friend Julie F. I like clothes shopping every so often and I heard there was this awesome JCPenney Outlet on 75th street. She had some insane ticket, so I figured if I wait until 5 p.m. everything would get straightened out. It turns ......

Kansas City Office Geeks in Da HOUSE!!!!!

What is an Office Geek? An Office Geek is someone - typically a developer or administrator - who works with or is interested in working with some aspect of the Microsoft Office System. The Office System encompasses both client applications (Word, Excel, etc) as well as server applications (primarily SharePoint, but also Forms Server, workflow, etc). This could mean that you work with SharePoint, use VSTO to write OBAs, define taxonomies, maintain corporate records, etc. I found this little blurb ......

Calling all people involved in a SharePoint User Group for Any Kind of Help

So I am somewhat involved in a user group that was started a couple months ago by Jeff Julian. This user group was created due to a lack of a SharePoint User Group that deals with more developmental and administrative aspects of SharePoint in the Kansas City Area. (Please stop posting comments about the user group that Daniel Webster hosts. I have no beef with him or his user group it is great for project leads and business analysts.
